How can i remove my phone number from imessage and just use email address ?

Hi all
I've searched all the forums and still can't find an answer for what i need (what i think i need!)
I have an iphone without a data plan so whenever anybody who is registered with imessage sends me a message i will not
receive it until i am back on wifi.
What i want to achieve is to be able to receive sms messages from imessage users when i am not on wifi and then imessages when i am back on wifi.
My assumption is that if i can unlink my mobile number from iMessage and only have it associated with my email address that this should work, but i cannot seem to remove my phone number from imessage, in the settings > iMessage > send and receive it will allow me to un-tick the associated email addresses but my phone number is greyed out and will not allow me to untick.
On my home Mac i can go into messages app and deselect the phone number but not on the iphone.
One solution says to deregister my phone on https://supportprofile.apple.com/ which i have tried (i can't see how that would work anyhow as there is no phone number in that registration)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Without a data plan and no internet access with your carrier's cellular network, an iMessage addressed to your email address can be received only when your iPhone is connected to an available wi-fi network no different when an iMessage is addressed to your cell phone number.
You cannot deselect or remove your cell phone number below you can be reached by iMessage at with iMessage on an activated iPhone. The iPhone's phone number is activated along with your Apple ID.

You choose whether to see text messages in Notification Center or not. If you elect to see them, they will display the phone number (unless they are from a contact in your contacts list).
You can choose not to see them at Settings > Notification Center > Messages.

This happens when you are using the same Apple ID for iMessage. To fix this you have two choices:
On all but one of the phones go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with a different ID. Note: you can still share the same ID for purchasing in Settings>iTunes & App Stores; or
On all of the phones go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and uncheck the email address(es) shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at". Also uncheck anyone else's phone number, if present.

HI,
In the Finder > Go Menu > Go to Folder
Enter ~/Library/Preferences in the dialogue box that appears (you can Copy and Paste the bold text).
In the Preferences folder find the com.apple.iMessage.bag.plist and drag it to the Trash
Restart Messages.
It will list nothing in the iMessages account and you will have to Add the Apple ID.
Once you have the new iPhone set it up for the Apple ID and the Mac version will then get a pop up asking for your to Accept which will then add the iPhone Number to the Settings.

I Need to do this because my postpaid line has recently been disconnected and after updating to IOS8, I couldn't activate iMessage anymore. I know that everytime we active iMessage and Facetime the carrier sends an international text to Apple for activation; so I'd like to temporarily delete my mobile number (since it won't activate yet) and only send / receive via email - so I can still use iMessage.
I Couldn't tick on the number because its greyed out.

I need help to resolve a problem that a have in my iphone (iphone 5 with IOS 6.1).
I have the iMessage and Facetime associate to my ID apple email. However a would like to associade to my phone number but I dont have da number listed in iMessage.
I've tried to enter the phone number manually on the email field in iMessage but it gives a error.
Can anyone help me?

I have this issue too. To elaborate when I go in to facetime/imessage settings and go to the section "YOU CAN BE REACHED BY FACETIME AT" it only provides email addresses. My mobile number is there but its grayed out and cant be selected. People have told me when they try to facetime me now they get a message saying I'm unavailable for facetime. I'm assuming these are people still on ios 6 that are still able to call my number which evidently doesnt work anymore??
Same applies to imessage. Texts are sent from my email address now. I dont want this! I might want to text someone and not have them know my email address. I hope this is a bug or something. Anyone know?

I found the answer. You can do this by:
For iMessage-
Settings>Message>Send & Receive>Log into your Apple account
For FaceTime-
Settings>FaceTime>Log into your Apple account
Once in, you can select the phone number you want to use. After completing this task, you can then go to Settings on your iPad and select iMessage and FaceTime. Preform the same steps as above and the phone number will be changed.

You can disassociate your phone number with your iMessages/Apple ID by turning off iMessages. Go to Settings -> iMessages -> Turn off iMessages. Wait a couple of hour to fully have your number unregistered with iMessages.
