How can I transfer bookmarks and passwords from a MAC G5 OS 10.3 (no Sync in Firefox) to a new iMAC with OS 10.7.2

I am upgrading from an older iMAC G-5 running OS X 10.3.9 with Firefox 2.0.0.20 which doesn't have a Sync program to a new iMAC running OS X 10.7.2 and Firefox 7.0.1. I would like to transfer my bppkmarks and password to the new computer.

For the bookmarks (and history) you need places.sqlite<br />
For the passwords you need key3.db and signons.sqlite

• How can I transfer music and iTunes from my mac to my iPhone?

I have a macbook air and need to transfer some of my music and itunes from my mac to my newly updates iphone4. Previously I used to drag what I wanted from my itunes to my phone but now it doesn't work. Any ideas?

First step, of course, is to plug your iPhone into your Macbooks Air. Then, you need to set up syncing how you want it in iTunes (on the MBA). If you want to be able to drag and drop music, select "manually manage music" on the Summary pane in iTunes.

How can I transfer text and format from a Word Doc to a new Pages Doc?

Select, and Copy in the Word doc and Paste in the Pages doc. It may not be perfect. Importing (Opening) the Word doc is probably better than using Copy/Paste for large amounts of content.

• How do I retrieve bookmarks and passwords from a Windows backup, after OS re-install?I have a full Windows backup of my machine, pre re-installl

I had to reinstall Vista 7 OS. I have a full Windows backup of my machine, prior to the re-installation. How do I retrieve the bookmarks and passwords from the backup? I understand they're stored in various files a ".default" folder in C:\users\username\appdata\roaming\mozilla\firefox\profiles. When I try restoring the folder, the files get skipped... When I try browsing for the individual files, I don't see them!

Many thanks for your responses... After a little scouting on the web, I have found THE solution... This is all due to the way Windows 7 Backup works, and will NOT let restore apps...
("File restore in Windows7 is not designed to restore back applications. This is because the application state is spread across potentially multiple folders, files & registry. Windows7 file backup is not aware of where all the state is spread to be able to restore the entire application accurately as such information is internal to the application. Restoring application partially might corrupt the application and render the application unusable. So we do not allow restoring applications from file backup.
In case files under C:\Program Files etc. are chosen for restoring, we block restoring files from backup to such locations as it might cause the applications to not function.)
What one has to do when restoring is to NOT attempt to restore to the original location, but to select the radio button which allows you to type a path where you want the files restored and type in the path of the original location!!! Then select copy and replace...A little quirky (and tedious), but it works!

• How can I transfer my iphoto library from a Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) harddrive to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) hard drive?

Community,
Every time I try to transfer my iphoto library from a Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) harddrive to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) hard drive, I receive the attached message: "You can't copy 'iPhoto Library' because it has the same name as another ideon on the destination volume, and that volume doesn't destinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames."
My theory is, if I am able to unpackage my iphoto library, I can transfer each folder one at a time so that I can trouble shoot any "duplicates." Will this work?
Let's say that works. How can I repackage the library so iphoto recognizes it?
Is there a better way?
Thank you,
Jonathan

Can we assume that I don't have any naming conflicts? Clearly there are or else I wouldn't get the error I'm getting.
The error doesn't mean you have name conflicts. It means that the Finder won't take the chance that you might have them.
You're suggesting that all I would need to do would be to use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer the files from the case-sensative harddrive to my Extended Journaled harddrive?
Yes. But I would just use the built-in rsync shell command. First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. Launch the Terminal application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press the space bar:
rsync -aE --delete
Now drag the iPhoto library you want to copy into the window. You should have something like this:
rsync -aE --delete /Users/you/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library
Drag the Pictures folder on the destination volume into the window. Now you have this (line will wrap on the page):
rsync -aE --delete /Users/you/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library /Volumes/something/Users/you/Pictures
Press return. The copying operation will start. When it finishes, you'll see a new dollar-sign ("$") prompt below what you entered. If there were no errors, you're done.

• How can I transfer music and movies from my iPod to my PC?

I recently lost all of my content on iTunes and have been looking for a way to transfer my content from my iPod over to my PC. I have no idea how I can do it, and my iPod is going screwy, so I need to transfer my content before my iPod finally breaks. Help?

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

• How can i transfer files and applications from an old windows 98SE OS?

Recently, i was surprised with a brand spanking new 15.4" 2.2 GHZ intel core 2 macbook pro. before this awesome new notebook, i was using a very old, arthritic windows 98SE OS and everything in my whole computing life is stored on that old win98SE antique! i would like to know how i can transfer all my music, movies, pictures and applications, including windows 98se itself so i can possibly run them using parallels or bootcamp (ie: my paintshop pro 7 & 9, animation shop, icewindale games, plus other windows based programs i already have.) i have a male to b male usb cable, if that might help me transfer, i do not know. i also have many many cd-r's, if is this the only way to transfer my files, i am going to be burning disks forever & ever! :P can anyone help me out and suggest a way i can have all my stuff on this awesome new macbook pro? Thanks so much! ^_^

Since its running 98se, i'd say it would have USB 1.1.. which is slow. so if you have a spare ethernet cable which i think is a lot faster than USB, you can set up a network via ethernet and send to the mac that way. If you turn all your sharing preferences on windows 98 (i forgot how to, because its such a long time since i used it) you can access every folder from your mac. But yeah there isnt a lot of ways to transfer quickly on something that old.

• How do I migrate bookmarks and passwords from Ubuntu to OS X.

My Ubuntu computer still boots but its hard disk may be dying. I want to migrate my profile settings from Ubuntu to OS X on my Mac. I copied my Ubuntu profile folder onto a thumb drive. Everything seemed to copy fine except for one symbolic link. I tried to copy the contents over the contents of the Apple Mac's profile folder, but it seems to have had no effect.

When you run Firefox on your Mac, a Firefox profile folder is created with default data and settings. You have to remove the contents of the new Firefox profile folder on your Mac (e.g., the bookmarkbackups folder, places.sqlite , cookies.sqlite, etc.) and then copy over the contents of your old Firefox profile folder to the Mac profile folder. You should do this selectively, just copying important files (like places.sqlite for bookmarks and browsing history). Recovering important data from an old profile lists important files and explains how to transfer the data to the new profile on your Mac. Backing up your information explains where the old profile data is stored and how to save a copy.
