How do I adjust for bright white snow in back of shot?

I recently had to shoot a subject (teller working drive-up window at bank) and my only possible view was out the window in order to capture a customer pulling up. The trouble is that there was a massive snowbank in the background with full sun reflecting right at me. Is there a way that I can tone down that snow and brighten the foreground (teller and customer) in Color? And if so; HOW? Please be VERY specific as I am a newbie to Color. Thanks in advance!!

In a nutshell you have a contrast adjustment to make, and as outlined, trying to drop the overall gain, while pushing "up" the mids is generally what you will have to try to accomplish.
If you don't have a lot of experience with grading, then a complex task is not how you want to start learning the process. Try messing with the 3-way in FCP for starters, for sure. Far and away the biggest annoyance with using COLOR for most new users is simply negotiating the round trip -- then learning the application. Its not an Apple one-button application.
Once you get into using a grading app, the approach that most colorists would use would be to first sort out whether a "Primary" correction would be enough to de-emphasize the objectionable impression of the white background. "Gain" down, "Mids" up... see what effect it has. Perhaps adjusting the Primary In luminance curve will help -- if you have any experience with Photoshop, it has a bit of that approach.
A somewhat more advanced approach would be to use a secondary correction -- isolate the bright area from the rest of the picture with an HSL (luminance only) qualifier, feather out the edge area, and then apply corrections to the qualified "inside" and "outside" areas.
The manual does actually offer some very good advice as to how to go about this, and of course, there are several books available that have been written by colorists outlining these various strategies.

    Certain older Macs can't use later version Apple keyboards.
    Various aluminum models were compatible with later model
    G5 PowerMac and iMac, while the older could only use older
    model keyboards. Third party USB keyboards from a variety
    of makers other than Apple may work OK.
    Be sure the Mac OS X is updated to the last Combo and
    then see if there is any other software update is available.
    Not sure now (years have gone by) if there was a firmware
    update applicable to the older Macs so they could use later
    metal keyboards. I'd found several white USB polycarbonate
    Apple keyboards to work with most of the last PPC Macs;
    and bought spares as available, metal / newer didn't work
    with mine. Several white plastic ones can work w/ intelmac.
    There were keyboard model numbers (Apple) noted to work
    with aluminum PowerMac G5, while others that look other-
    wise identical (except number on keyboard) did not work...
    Too new, and they weren't supported. Worked w/Intel-Mac.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do you adjust the brightness on a Thunderbolt Display

    How do you adjust the brightness of a Thunderbolt Display attached to an iMac ?

    I had this peculiar ‘issue’ hooking up to my MacBook Retina when my Thunderbolt Display was delivered but Applecare  - thanks Andrew - got me there. It seems daft!
    The Thunderbolt Display Brightness slider IS there – you just have to know how to make it show up.
    At initial set-up of the Thunderbolt Display [or if the Brightness slider is ever not visible in the System Preferences> Thunderbolt Display window], so long as the Thunderbolt [external] Display and the Macbook Display are ‘mirrored’ I can control the Thunderbolt [external] Display via my MacBook Retina Brightness keys [F1 & F2] – or by the Brightness slider that THEN appears in my System Preferences>Thunderbolt Display window. Once set up the Thunderbolt Display System Preferences Window continues to show the Brightness slider but I occasionally lose it if my MacBook has been disconnected from the Thunderbolt Display for some time – and I then have to start over.
    So:-
    Apple menu >
    System Preferences>
    Displays>
    Click Arrangement [at the top]
    Click Mirror Displays [at the lower left]
    That then gives me-at-least a Brightness slider on the System Preferences> Thunderbolt Display window [as well as on the Built In Retina Display window] and I can then adjust them independently.
    Oddly, having set this up just once the Brightness slider then remains on my Thurnderbolt Display and I can control it [and my MacBook Retina Display independently]. Occasionally I lose it again and have to start over.
    Hope this works for others.

  • How can I adjust the brightness of my old Apple 24" LED Display?

    How can I adjust the brightness of my old Apple 24" LED Display?

    Jacob,
    Thank you for the quick response. I opened both the TIFF and the EPS in Illustrator. I used the Eyedropper tool to get the CMYK values of the color of the text part in the TIFF, then I went back to the EPS and selected the text and input the CMYK values in the color tab. I know it's not precise, but it's close enough. Could I have done this better?
    Yes, I have access to Photoshop but I haven't tried using it with vector files. I am really new to graphic design and I need all the help I can get. Thank you!

  • My display is dull, how do I adjust the brightness?

    I have an iMac, the screen has gone quite dark (as if in sleep mode)  I have to sit in a darkened room to see it properly. Have I hit the wrong key or key combination of keys? How do I adjust the brightness? Help

    If you are still on 10.4.11 (stongly doubt it) you probably have wired keyboard, the F3 key is for brightness. Also check System Preferences - Universal Access - Seeing and check there too.

  • Adjust for Brightness Corrections the Camera made

    I have some video clips where I am trying to make two types of corrections.
    I am using Warp Stabilize to correct for movement in the way I handled the camera during the filming process.  Warp Stabilize seems to do a fair job of fixing this, I can accept this for now.
    Then I am trying to repair/ adjust where the camera made some auto brightness corrections when the focus was made/moved to a darker object in the scene.  It causes intermittent bright and dark lighting in the clip.
    I realize both of these situations are my own fault, but I am still trying to learn how to adjust for them.
    I tried using the Effect /Color Correction / Brightness and Contrast tool because this seems logical, but the results are not  smooth.  I set a key-frame on both sides of the problem point on the clip so I can stop/ lock in the effect from making changes to an area  that is good/ acceptable.  Then I move to the center point between the two key-frames I am holding as correct and make a brightness adjustment (creating a new key-frame).  This sounds like it should compensate, but I end up with even more intermittent flashes of bright and dark.
    Can anyone tell me if this logic is correct and is this the correct tool I should be using to make this sort of adjustment to a clip   The adjustments are not  smooth as I would expect from key-frame.  And it appears the key-frames I set to hold what is correct are being auto adjusted.
    I think there should be a metering tool  that I could use to measure/meter Brightness (ie; 1-100) throughout the clip so when I see the brightness is  varying away form my desire meter reading I could make an adjustment at that point where brightness varies to bring it back to the metered level I want to hold
    Thanks for your help in advance

    I've never used the Brightness/ Contrast adjustment. Curves and Levels work much better. Beyond that - if the aperture change is immediate, then split the clip on the respective point and correct each segment separately. otherwise it seems you do not quite understand how AE keyframes work. You don't "encircle" a problem, you just animate the respective parameters. In your example the only keyframe that actually holds anything useful is the one in the middle, the other two hold neutral default values. It's inevitable that you get additional brightness jumps because you are telling AE to revert to those defaults on the third keyframe, but the exposure is still wrong. Simply makes no sense. The rule of thumb is always to use as few keys as possible, especially on something as tricky as color corrections.

  • How do i adjust the brightness on my screen? it's dim like when the power cord is out.

    After my wife had the laptop out of the house today, I plugged it back in and the screen brightness is very dim...like what it looks like when the power cord is not in...usually, when I plug the cord back in, the screen becomes brighter...that has stopped. Any ideas to fix?
    thanks.

    Hi,
    Here are some common ways to adjust the brightness.
    Open windows Control Panel, open Windows Mobility Centre and adjust the brightness here.
    On a lot of notebooks, tapping f3 will often increase the brightness ( with f2 reducing it ).
    Open windows Control Panel, open Power Options, click Change Plan Settings next to your selected power plan and you can adjust the brightness here.

  • [Solved]how generate a *.files for pkgfile whit a custom off-line repo

    I reated a repo whit repo-add (and options) but I noticed that I cannot get throw manpages a way to create a $repo.files for pkgfile
    my reppo is on my home for now, I learning how create one,thisis why I ask
    any 'hiden' or special combination of script for creating that file??
    another think is... abs download from the master svn branch right??

    $ repo-add --files foo.files.tar.gz pacman-4.1.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    ==> Adding package 'pacman-4.1.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz'
    -> Computing checksums...
    -> Creating 'desc' db entry...
    -> Creating 'depends' db entry...
    -> Creating 'files' db entry...
    ==> Creating updated database file 'foo.files.tar.gz'
    Second to last line:
    " -> Creating 'files' db entry...
    The "$repo.files" database is just a regular database with extra files in it. You can name it whatever you want. Pacman can use it the same way it uses the regular "$repo.db" file.
    The only reason that servers include both $repo.db and $repo.files is that $repo.files is larger. Most people do not need the file lists, so there is no need to download them. If you are running a local server, then you should just create one database with "repo-add --files", can create a symlink:
    $ repo-add --files foo.db.tar.gz
    $ ln -s foo.db files.db
    Otherwise, you have to run repo-add twice. Once to create $repo.db without the file lists, then once again to create $repo.files with the lists.
    My repo-add_and_sign script does this automatically. It can also batch-sign packages and databases.

  • How do I adjust the brightness/light around the EDGES ONLY?

    Hey everyone I just bought a JAG35PRO DOF adaptor for my Canon Vixia HF M30.  After using the adaptor the image I think lets less light in or something, and the edges are all darker.  Is there anyway to fix this in Adobe Premiere?  Thanks.

    You are getting a vignette from your adapter.
    You may be too far stopped down (aperture) or not far enough zoomed in on the adapter screen.
    It will be very tricky to fix on your existing shots because you need a reverse vignette or a mask.  Whatever..they need to blend.
    There are a number of ways of creating a Gradient mask
    This could be done in Photoshop as well but:
    In PPRO...Try creating a Title with a circular / eliptical "gradient" that generally  covers the area of the vignette.
    Place Title  above the clip in the timeline.  Opacity >Blend> maybe Screen (adjust opacity as well for control)  Try the Blend Modes  because lighten may  work as well.
    Its going to be a bit trial and error.

  • DeskJet 4480 - I cannot print label paper. How can I adjust for paper thickness?

    Using an HP DeskJet 4480, I cannot print on Avery label paper. It is too thick and the printer doesn't seem to want to pull the paper through. Is there a paper thickness adjustment somewhere on the printer?

    Hi,
    I don't think due to paper weight (thickness) but papers are too slippery to pull. You know what I mean.

    I was using OS Snow Leopard and on 8/1/13 I downloaded Mountain Lion.  Then I found out it was not compatible with my HP Printer (HP Photosmart C5580 all-in-one) so I called Apple support and the tech told me to erase the hard drive instead of going in the time machine.  Well I did that and then it took about three hours three days a week for about three weeks on the phone with an apple tech to get all my stuff back on my computer.  I have had trouble with my printer (won't do the scan anymore and wasn't printing on my DVDs.  Also the computer keeps freezing up when it is in the sleep mode, etc.
    When I tried to list my problem on this forum it lists your OS at the bottom and mine had Mountain Lion listed as what I was using so apparently it didn't erase it.  Want to know how to get Mountain Lion off and put my Snow Leopard on so things start working right.

    Go to the  menu/About This Mac - what OS version shows there?
    Do a backup, preferably 2 separate ones on 2 separate drives.
    Revert to a Previous OS X
    Revert to Snow Leopard
    If you do revert, I'd use Setup Assistant to restore your data. This process takes a while, so do it when you won't need the computer for several hours, based on my experience.
