How do I build a macbook air as a standby  machine ?

I have a 2010 13" dual core Macbook Air I want to build & maintain as a standby quick swap out machine in case my MBP crashes at the wrong time & is unrecoverable.
Assuming my external storage remains operable after the crash what do I need to consider in building the MBA as a standby machine to ensure a quick swap out with minimal data loss? I'm not looking to mirror the main machine's drive.
many thanks

you dont want to mirror the HD from the Pro on an external?
      Thats exactly what you DO need to do.
~~~~~~"in case my MBP crashes at the wrong time & is unrecoverable"
The working premise of any pro on any computer is to always always assume your notebook or desktop is going to crash and burn anytime all the time.
Why would your external storage NOT be operational after your machine crashes (if and when) ?
This is why its all about redundancy in multiples externally.  2 copies is 1, and 1 is none, and data ON the computer never counts in this scheme.
If you only have a single external backup or data archive, this is always a disaster in waiting, a single-point failure and tragedy-trap
As for your "fast recovery from a crash"
Nothing exists faster than a HD clone to boot from for ultra fast recovery from an internal HD or SSD crash.
There are only two kinds of hard drives, those that have failed, and those that will fail, regardless of quality of manufacture.
Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
Four words: "compartmentalized autonomous redundancy of data" or C.A.R.D. What this means regarding your data is
“centralize it, isolate it, and multiply it”.
This easy acronym to remember about how to approach your data is a great first approach to keep in mind.
Compartmentalized: separating out your data from your system files, centralizing all static and active files into a location or two to make backups, and archived data easier to update and locate. Centralizing your data collection is the primary hazard to overcome for what usually is the case of data that is scattered everywhere throughout your internal hard drive.
Autonomous: Isolation of data from changes, theft, decentralizing data to safes, fire boxes, offsite and online locations. Importantly ‘freezing’ data onto independent storage media for protection and from alterations, such as DVDs, hard drives, and online encrypted files, or .DMG created files of static data collections.
Redundancy: making copies of all autonomous isolated data such that data is decentralized not only in place and in media storage type (DVD, HD, online) for safety and protection as a failsafe, but each aspect of that failsafe has at the very least two redundant copies.
Data: all files made, saved, created, modified or working on. Important pictures, documents, videos, PDF, financial, personal. Any data large or small which you would not dare lose, which is private, important, hard or impossible to recreate, or most importantly, would take tremendous time to regenerate. Essentially anything important to you, your company, your loved ones (will, medical records, financial information, etc.), friends or otherwise.
    I have tried a few multople key combinations.  I would be very grateful if someone could post one that might ensure that any applications quit before re-starting.
    Try Force Quit.
    How do I use my MacBook Air to access AWS (Amazon web Service)?  The information provided to me by Apple Care seems to be about allowing outside access to my MacBook.
    Sorry, but does this relate to Apple Remote Desktop, Apple's software for managing networked Macs, in some way? If so, how are you using ARD in relation to Amazon's services?
    How do I transfer my MacBook Air to my wife so she can sync her iTunes account and other settings with her iPad Mini?
    You can change the account shortname to whatever you wish to use.
    As you can see from my example above. Once you click on the Create User button a new account will be created.
    She will need to get her own Apple ID setup so when she starts with iTunes she can open her own iTunes account unless you both want to share the use of the same Apple ID. This can create a bit of confusion if you have your own iPads or iPhones or iPods. As you have discovered it's pretty much one iDevice with one Apple ID.
    As for the iTunes library that becomes a more complicated issue.
    Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Mavericks. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click here, and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
    Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as Microsoft Office 2004.
    External screens are designed to work as extended displays for your computer's display. It means that menu bars and desktop icons won't appear, and you will only see windows if you drag them to the right part of the computer's display.
    To change this, you have to activate video mirroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019
    How do I connect my MacBook Air 2011 to a projector?
    It depends on the input connection for the projector, but since many are rduced resolution, VGA seems to be the prevalent common connection.
    It's just a matter of buying the adapter that adapts VGA to the Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt port on your Air. If it is a DVI or HDMI connection input on your projector, the online Apple Store carries that as well.
    This adapter and sufficient length VGA cable is all you need for VGA.
    Here's the DVI adapter.
    For some reason, I am unable to bring up the Moshi HDMI adapter on Apple's site.
    Hi,
    Be aware that scanning is no longer supported on OS x 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8 but only print functionality is available:
  • How do i connect my MacBook Air to a Printer on my Wireless Network
    How do i connect my MacBook Air to a Printer on my Wireless Network ? The printer is connected to a PC running Windows 7. That PC is connected to my Wireless Network. MacBook connects fine to Network, but can't find Printer.
    Hi Kappy,
    Thanks for your response. I followed your instructions (for Mac OS 10.6.7). It seemed to set up OK, but when I tried to print I kept getting the following Failure Message "Session Setup failed : NT_Status_Invalid_Parameter".
    When I get the "Advanced Window" should I enter anything into the "Location" field ? Maybe I am not entering the correct Workgroup, Server or Sharename ? Is there a way to make sure all of that is correct ? I went on to the computer that the printer is connected to and verified all of that, but am not sure I looked in the right places.
    When I print via my Home Network from another Windows 7 Computer to the same PC, it works fine. I just can't get it to Print from my MacBook Air.
    I thought of using the IP Address. How do I find the IP address of the Computer that is connected to the Printer ? Is it what they call the IPv4 Address, or the IPv4 Default Gateway ?
    Appreciate any help you can provide.
    How do I pair my macbook air with my iPad???
    What do you mean by "pair"? If you're asking about Bluetooth pairing, the only thing you could do if you paired them would be to share the iPad's internet connection. iOS doesn't have the BT profiles for file sharing or syncing.
    If you're asking about something different, please provide some details.
    Best of luck.
