How do I choose a default startup drive?

I have two startup drives on my Hard Drive. One is Snow Leopard and the other is Leopard. I need Leopard for some printing issues with Photoshop and Epson. How do I choose a default startup drive? Most of the time I want the Snow Leopard drive at startup but it seems to always start up on Leopard. I need to always hold down the option key at startup. Sometimes I forget.

System Preferences > Startup Dive > select the drive with 10.6.x I suspect you may need to do that for both systems. Click the lock to prevent further changes, then do an option-boot and ensure it'll let you start from the other.
Macs store a reference to the default startup drive set in System Preferences > Startup Drive in PRAM, so you don't have to set it individually for each drive or partition -- as long as the selected one is available at startup time, that is the one the Mac will start up from. (Otherwise, it will be the first available one found. If none capable of starting up the Mac are found instead the flashing slashed circle with the question mark in it won't go away, indicating the Mac is still waiting for you to make one available, for instance by powering up an attached external drive or inserting a bootable DVD.)
The option key startup method temporarily overrides this & allows you to choose another drive or partition, but just for that startup -- the next time you start up normally, it will revert to the selected one.
Also, the lock in System Preferences has nothing to do with making preference settings permanent or persistent. It is just a security feature to prevent unauthorized users from making changes from an already logged in user account. For instance, it makes no difference if the lock is closed or open at startup time, because that is before the OS is running or able to check preference file settings stored on disks. During the early stages of the boot process, code resident in firmware checks for depressed keys & buttons before loading the OS from the default source set in PRAM. This is how it decides if it should instead run the Startup Manager (evoked by the option key), first eject a CD or DVD (evoked by the eject key or primary mouse button), or start up from an alternate source like an installer DVD (evoked by the C key).

  • How do I install a new startup drive

My startup drive on my Mac Pro running Mac OS X 10.7.5 is full and I need to replace it with a 2T drive. How do I go about changing over the data and rebooting with the new drive?

Put the new drive into one of the empty bays.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Quit DU and boot from the Recovery HD:
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new disk drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • How do I create a new startup drive?

Once I get a larger drive installed to replace the 80 GB drive that came with my G5, what is the safest way to create the new startup drive?

    Gi-
The best way to get going on a new drive is, after formatting the drive with Disk Utility, download SuperDuper and clone the old drive to the new drive.
The free version is excellent, and totally reliable,
The paid version makes keeping backup clones easy.

  • I am trying to update my phone software and it says there is no enough space to update, how do i change the default selected drive on windows?

when trying to update my iPhone, i get a message that i have a full drive and i should delete some data, which i assume iTunes is using by default my C drive which is in fact full, how can I change the save directory to be able to save and change and update my iPhone? thank you

What does the message say exactly? Are you sure it's not telling you the phone has no more space?

  • How can I choose what default number my iPhone 4 chooses when I select a number with multiple contacts as a favorite?

Everytime I click on a contact to add to "My Favorites", it randomly selects the info that it will use as a default contact for that number, and recently it's only been choosing the e-mail for FaceTime (which not all of my contacts have) instead of the mobile number, which is what I would like to have it default to for each contact. Please Help!!!

    Go to Phone > Favorites.
Select the + button to add a Favorite.
Select the phone number for the chosen contact that you want to add as a Favorite. You can add the cell phone number and the home number or office number as separate Favorites for one contact.
And I just used the Add to Favorites option for a contact. When I selected Add to Favorites for a contact with more than one phone number entry, I'm provided a list of the phone numbers to choose from for the number to be added to Favorites.

  • How do I set the default startup sequence for iWork documents under mountain lion?

I am frustrated when starting Pages under Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8.2). Instead of opening with the documents that I was working on when I closed the app, it opens with a standard "open" dialog box. I am forced to navigate through my folders and files or "create a new document" and then go to previously opened files. I would like Pages to open in the same status it was when I last used it, or if no files were open, to then automatically "create a new document" using the "Blank" template. In other words, how do I open Pages directly without the intervening dialog boxes?

Open General preferences and uncheck these boxes:

  • How can I change the default  driver to OracleXADataSource in JDeveloper

    Hello,
How can I change the default oracle driver: oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver to oracle.jdbc.xa.client.OracleXADataSource in JDeveloper Studio Edition Version 11.1.1.0.2, Build JDEVADF_MAIN.BOXER_GENERIC_090328.0229.5205.
If I modify the file connections.xml from jdeveloper\system\system11.1.1.0.31.52.05\o.jdevimpl.rescat2\connections in the sense that I change the driver class, then in JDeveloper when I test my connection I have this problem: Test failed: oracle.jdbc.xa.client.OracleXADataSource cannot be cast to java.sql.Driver
Why do I need this XA version of the oracle driver? Well I tried, from a book to reproduce the model of an application: entities, stateless and stateful session beans, mdb, web services and a client to test one part of the model.
And because of the JMS server I need an XA driver.
I deployed to the integrated wls 10.3 and when I test my client, if I use the default driver for the connection the an error message appears tell me either to emulate two-phase commit or to use XA driver.
My application works very well, if I configured in the console of the integrated wls 10.3 a datasource with the same name as my ide/application connection that has for the Driver Class Name: oracle.jdbc.xa.client.OracleXADataSource in the Connection Pool tab.
    Thank you.

Open DIsk Utility and in the toolbar select Disk Image. The file selector will open and you'll have to do three things: 1) just as with any file, name it and point the file selector to where you want it to be saved, 2) near the bottom you'll see name - type iWork 2013 and 3) below that select the image size. Click on size, choose custom and type 1500 MB then click on the Create button.
Some time will pass and then you'll see an external disk pop up on your desktop and/or the Finder window sidebar. Drag the three programs into it and eject it like any other external disk. Now delete the programs from your applications window.
Where ever it was you pointed the file selector to you'll see the file you created. Double click on it and the disk image will mount again.

  • How to change default startup OS.

How do you change the default startup OS from WinXP to OSX and vice versa?

Alternative to using Startup Disk is to use OPTION booting. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Click on the icon for the desired startup disk, then click on the down arrow button beneath it. Unlike using Startup Disk this method is a temporary switch. The next time you restart the computer will startup from the original startup volume.

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How can I make the external hard drive my default to save everything on it?

    Hi everyone,
I have a new Macbook with retina but I had to buy the one with lower Flash Disk space and faster processor,
but when I realized that I could buy external hard drives I bought one, so I was wondering if I could change the default Flash Drive to the external one so apps and all my files, music and content save in this one instead of the one inside the mac
    thank you for your time

    what does SSD mean???
SSD is the internal flash memory.
Use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to "clone" (exact copy) the SSD to the external.
Then go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select the external HD as the startup disk.

  • How to use DB2 XA driver instead of default DB2 driver

    Hi,
I've been using the default DB2 driver (com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2Driver) for a datasource until now. I need to switch to using an XA approved driver to handle some two phase commits. It appears Oracle has an XA driver for DB2 (weblogic.jdbcx.db2.DB2DataSource) but whenever I use it I get the following error:
[BEA][DB2 JDBC Driver][DB2]PROGRAM NAME NULLID.DDJU360B 0X4A44424334444232 NOT FOUND IN PLAN null
What does this error mean? How can I switch to an XA DB2 driver?
    Thanks...

    DB2 running on AIX:
    select * from sysibm.sysversions;
    7010200     2001-04-11 17:01:21.478428     WBDID04
    8020000     2005-02-01 19:55:13.083939     SYSIBM
    8020800     2007-09-08 08:16:45.496058     WBDID04
WebLogic Server 10.3 running on Windows XP.
Using the XA driver works fine for WebLogic Server 8.1 and the existing DB2 database. So, I'm wondering what went wrong when I upgraded to 10.3.
The error happens on server startup when it's trying to test the connection:
    <25-May-2010 3:28:44 o'clock PM GMT-06:00> <Error> <JDBC> <BEA-001112> <Test "SELECT COUNT(*) FROM SYSIBM.SYSDUMMY1" set up for pool "csp" failed with exception: "java.sql.SQLException: [BEA][DB2 JDBC Driver][DB2]PROGRAM NAME NULLID.DDJC360B 0X4A44424334444232 NOT FOUND IN PLAN null".>
    Any ideas?

  • [How] Reformart Startup Drive

I am wanting to reformat my start up drive.
I assume after reformat, as I want it fresh and clear, the OS is not installed. I want to subsequently install the OS onto the drive.
I have downloaded the Mountain Lion OS from the App Store. I then made a bootable flash drive with it.
I am unsure what to do now. From what I read, but don't really trust, is that I need to insert the drive that I have made with the aid of the following instructions:
    http://www.cultofmac.com/180925/how-to-make-a-bootable-disk-or-usb-drive-of-os-x -mountain-lion/
Now that I have the disk. I read that I need to boot into recovery holding COMMAND+R during boot up.
After I am in I reformat the hard drive and somehow reinstall the OS.
Confused, tired and in need of some help if possible.
    Cheers,
    46

Ok so this is what you are saying:
    #1. Insert USB into mac
#2. Reboot mac and when restarting press and hold the "option" key.
#3. Select the USB as my Startup Disk.
However from there how do I reformatt my Macintosh HD drive? Is there an option or selection to choose disk utility from there? I thought you can only select your Mac Startup Disk from there no?
If you can, after selecting your startup disk, reformat via Disk Utility please do let me know.

  • How do I choose Preview as default over Adobe Reader?

Once you update one thing . . . can of worms.  How do I choose preview as default over Adobe Reader?
Here's why I want to change the default viewer, in case anyone has ideas: When I updated to Reader X (as required by some of our industry-specific programs) my Quickbooks Online financial program no longer prints in either Safari or Firefox.
I called QB and they said they only support Reader 9.3. Uninstalled Reader X, tried install 9.3. No go--isn't compatible with Mac OS 10.6.7. Gave QB my "thoughts" on their not being up to speed with Reader updates . . .
So, maybe changing to Preview as the default reader will work. Adobe 10 has overruled Preview.
How do I set the preference to go back to Preview?
    Any help appreciated, thanks.
