How do I determine if a non-LabVIEW windows program is installed on a computer?

I would like to know how to generate a true/false condition based on whether a program is installed on a target machine. I have a couple applications that need to self adjust with their functionality, based on which computer they are installed on, so I would only need to maintain one version of the code. The first step with the program would be to check program files, program files(x86), or the registry just to determine if the program is installed. The result will move to the next step, which is that if the program is not present, then is a specific GPIB device attached? I think i can determine that by trying to initialize the device, and reading an error cluster. What I am having trouble with is determining if a non-National Instruments related program is installed on the target computer. Any direction toward the solution is greatly appreciated.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

The software I am searching for is only installed by me, so it would be in the default location, but I like the registry idea better anyway. I have not worked with registry searches before with LabVIEW, so a couple of pointers on how to do it would be great. The whole goal is to have the program decide which computer it is installed on, so different levels of functionality can be achieved with a "One size fits all" approach.

  • How can I detect spyware or keylogger programs directly installed on my computer?

    Hello,
I have a serious problem. My ex had physical access to my MacBook Air and I believe he installed either spyware or a key logger program directly on my computer, as he had administrative access. It could be a program like WebWatcher or Spector Pro. There are a number of programs that allow someone to install this software by downloading it from the internet directly onto your computer.
Unfortunately, I'm a physician whose been involved in reaserch which has classified information on it. It never occurred to me that someone would do something like this, but I am very worried that he has installed something. I recently installed MacScan and Little Snitch to determine if anything was detected.
    MacScan Displayed the following:
Last Spware Scan Run on: Sat 4/26/14 01:15 am
Spyware Detected on Last Scan: 0
Total Spyware Detected in all Scans: 148
I'm unsure if what was detected by Mac Scan were simply cookies.
I also tried Linc Davis' suggestion and here are my results:

    CAN ANYONE HELP ME?
    Thank you so much.

I am adding information from Webwatcher's own site:
    Q. Is WebWatcher easy to use?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher is very easy to use and you can begin monitoring immediately without having to read a lengthy manual. Our web based interface is user-friendly and can be conveniently accessed from any computer in the world with an Internet connection.
    Q. How does WebWatcher compare to other monitoring software?
    A. It's the most powerful and intuitive tool on the market. As the only web-based program, WebWatcher ensures the security of your data while providing you with the flexibility to monitor any computer from anywhere in the world. While some products email data, email is NOT a secure means of transporting information. Anything sent by email is extremely vulnerable, and can be seen by dozens of people before it reaches its destination. WebWatcher, however, uses 128-bit encryption guaranteeing the safety and security of your information.
    Q. Is WebWatcher PC or Mac compatible?
    A. WebWatcher is PC compatible, as well as Mac OS X compatible.
    Q. Is WebWatcher truly invisible?
    A. Absolutely! WebWatcher is 100% invisible. It doesn't run as a service, it doesn't appear in the list of running processes and there are no visible files that can be seen. Not only does WebWatcher work invisibly, but it's also friendly with all known firewall software and hardware allowing you to gather the information you need without raising any red flags.
    Q. How will I know WebWatcher is working?
    A. Just login to your secure online account to see the recorded data. Or you can enter the hotkey sequence on the monitored computer to view the WebWatcher status panel.
    Q. If I buy WebWatcher now, how soon will I receive the software?
    A. Immediately. Within minutes you'll receive a confirmation email that contains the username and password needed to download WebWatcher.
    Q. How do I install WebWatcher?
    A. Within minutes of completing your purchase, you'll receive an email with a link to the Setup Wizard. Just follow the onscreen instructions. Once the Setup Wizard is complete you'll receive a link to download the software. Important: you can complete the Setup Wizard from any computer, but the SOFTWARE MUST BE INSTALLED ON THE COMPUTER YOU WISH TO MONITOR.
    Q. Do I install WebWatcher on my computer or on the computer I want to monitor?
    A. The Setup Wizard can be installed on any computer, but the actual monitoring software must be installed on the computer you wish to monitor. Since WebWatcher is web based, you won't have to download the software onto the computer you'll use for viewing the recorded information.
    Q. Can I use different computers to check what's been recorded?
    A. Yes. Once the software is installed on the computer you wish to monitor, you can view the data from any computer in the world with Internet access.
    Q. Do WebWatcher icons or messages appear on my computer or on the monitored computer?
    A. No. Since WebWatcher runs invisibly, no icons or messages will appear on your computer or on the monitored computer.
    Q. Will WebWatcher email the recorded information to me?
    A. No. Email isn't secure for transmitting information. Any program that emails your data puts your private information at serious risk. WebWatcher offers the only web based monitoring system of its kind. We use 128-bit encryption to ensure the highest level of data security.
    Q. How do I retrieve the information that WebWatcher has recorded?
    A. Just log into our secure web based interface from any computer in the world with a standard web browser. Visit our demo to see actual screenshots of the program.
    Q. Will WebWatcher work on a laptop?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher will record computer activities and upload the data to your account when the monitored computer is reconnected to the Internet.
    Q. Does WebWatcher record emails?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher records emails and you'll be able to see the subject of the email, who sent it, who received it, the time and date email is sent and received, the contents and any attachments. Our email recorder is compatible with all of the most popular email programs including web based email.
    Q. Does WebWatcher record IMs?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher records instant messages. Our software is compatible with all of the most popular instant message programs including AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger and Yahoo Messenger.
    Q. Does WebWatcher record websites visited?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher records websites visited. With just a click, you'll be able to visit the exact website visited and see what was viewed including searches performed.
    Q. Can WebWatcher block websites?
    A. Yes. WebWatcher can both block websites and record websites. When it encounters an Alert Word on a site, it can block that page or take a screenshot for later review. You can also block specific URL addresses.
    Q. Does WebWatcher have a keylogger?
    A. Yes. Our invisible key logger records every keystroke, even when a user is offline.
    Q. Do I need one license for every computer that I wish to monitor?
    A. Yes. An individual license is required for every computer that you wish to monitor. We offervolume discounts for multi-license purchases.

  • How can I determine at runtime the type and specs of the DAQ card a computer has installed?

I am creating a voltmeter with a record button for use in systems without LabView installed (stand alone exe's are used). My program allows users to select the scan rate on channels they have selected to view. I want to be able to determine the capabilities of the card (max sampling rate, # of channels avaliable, etc...) within LabView at runtime. Any help would be appriciated.
    Thanks...

Is there a similar type of function for NI-DAQmx? I'm trying to figure out how to programmatically query a card's number of AI channels, AO channels, CTRS's etc, without having to build up my own hard-coded table.

  • How do I determine which version of windows os is installed on the computer that my application is running on.

I need to determine which version of windows os in on the computer running my application to make some minor adjustments to a subvi.  Is there a programmatic way to determine this using Labview.

Or, use the Application property node Application>OS>Detailed Name.  Although I can't say anything about its output on other-than-Windows OSes.

  • How to Quickly Determine Whether or not Specific Hotfixes or Updates are Installed?

I have a handful of applications that require specific hotfixes or updates to be installed.  An excellent example of this is Internet Explorer 11 which has
9 prerequisites. (well only 6 are required, the remaining 3 prerequisites provide a better experience.)
Is there a reliable & fast way of checking for whether or not a specific hotfix and/or patch/update has been installed?
    I am aware of `wmic qfe` but
    According to
this, it will only "retrieve updates for Windows OS itself and its components (such as Windows Internet Explorer (IE) or Windows Server roles and features)"
Even if I'm checking for just 1 hotifx, it takes roughly 6 seconds to retrieve that information.  When we're checking for dozen or two hotfixid's that quickly adds up. `Measure-Command {wmic qfe where "hotfixid='kb982018'"}`  So
for IE11, we're looking at nearly 1 minute of waiting.  Nonsense.
Note: I'm not asking "is my system patched?" nor am I asking for a report of installed patches.  I could use WSUS, SCCM, MBSA and a multitude of other solutions for that.  I need something scriptable that will install a specific prerequisite
at runtime, so I'm looking for a batch/vbscript/powershell solution that'll be quick, like 1 second quick, not 5+ per KB.

Thanks.  I'm no expert.  I don't have a slew of characters before or after my name.  This isn't an I'm right/you're wrong situation.  I don't claim to know everything - just trying to mitigate the questions I know I'm going to be asked.
    Prior to posting, I saw
your post here (which is great I might add) which works, and it will work for determining whether or not a machine has a specific update/hotfix installed.  But it consistently took 6 seconds to retrieve a single result on our assets.  This
was on a Core i7 with 8GB and an SSD running Windows 8.1 Pro.  This doesn't bode well for our day-to-day systems which are Core 2 Duo's with 4GB and spindle disks.  Unless my math is wrong, if I'm checking for all 6 possible required IE11 prereqs
thats 36 seconds of wait time just for WMI queries.  I'm just shocked it takes so long which made me wonder whether or not there was a faster retrieval method.
Why would I think there's a faster method?  The closest example I can think of might be a software install.  Sure, I can query WMI, but that too takes a while.  But I could a
    `reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{product code}` or `reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Mozilla Firefox 29.0.1 (x86 en-US)`
then check errorlevel to determine if the product was installed, right?  Or take it a step further & check the `/v Version` to make sure it matches what I expect it to be, right?   We don't have fancy tools here like Altiris or SCCM
:(  Reg query just appears to be significantly faster than wmic/gwmi in that specific scenario.  That gave me hope there
might be a faster option for checking for installed updates & hotfixes.
    IE11
tries to install the proper prerequisites.  If that fails, they'll have to be done manually.
And it just so happens that the IE11 install
does fail in our environment when we don't install the manually.  Fortunately we're not ready to deploy IE11, so there's no rush to push IE11.  I was merely using IE11 as an example because by virtue of the articles existence, this
is a possible real-world scenario.  If I know that we can safely regression test the 6 patches for IE11, and just have it be an optional installation for the users that want or need it, then I can add the prerequisite logic to the script to help ensure
a successful installation.  Again, an IE11 deployment isn't the goal here.  IE11 is just the example.

  • How can I access a wider variety of fonts that I can install on my computer? (Designer)

I'm a junior Designer working for a Digital agency with 30+ developers.
The company does not have a font library but a type kit account. I have used Google fonts a few times but the selection there is quite scarce.
Type kit is great for web fonts however it does not allow you to download the font files and install them on to your computer and I want to be able to put them into the design and experiment with them before the designs are taken to the developers.
I have not found a solution for this that is not extremely costly or legal.
As I am the first and only designer in this company, there is no selection of fonts available apart from those that are already installed on the computers.
Does anyone have any suggestions that could help me with my problem please?
Thanks in advance, all feedback is greatly appreciated!

    Hi Lauren,
We have been rolling out a new feature which allows you to use fonts from Typekit on the desktop for word publishing, print design, and more.  You can learn more from this blog post:
    http://blog.typekit.com/2013/08/08/sign-up-for-early-access-to-desktop-font-sync/
The feature is currently still in early release, which means you would need to sign up for access, as explained in that blog post.  Font sync will be available to all users in the near future, though.
Once you have signed up and been granted access, however, you will be able to sync Typekit fonts to your desktop.  There's more information available on our website:
    http://help.typekit.com/customer/portal/topics/514077-syncing-fonts-to-the-desktop/article s
I hope that this helps; let me know if you have any other questions!  Best,

  • How come I have to spend $145. to get windows 7 to install a HP officejet pro 8500a printer.

I have tried for 2 days to install a printer.I bought one and took it back to the store. They exchanged it for a new one and I could not install it either. After severa hours With a Technician from H.P. I could not get it to print anything from the internet.I was told by H.P. that it was Vista operational system and I have to buy windows 7.This sounds like a lot of BS to me.Andy

You're right. That does sound odd. I have q 6500+ running on Vist w/no problem. Have you a) uninstalled any old HP printers from the pc? b) run install as Administrator? I have not looked, but does the setup disc say it has Vista drivers? If so there should be no reason it doesn't install properly. I looked the printer up and it says it should work under Vista.
Maybe you need to open up a tech support case and get in touch w/a case mgr. to help you. They often are more help than some of the tech support staff.  Good luck.

  • How can I get 3.6 back since 4.0 won't install on my computer?

I've submitted a previous related question, but I'll try again. After downloading 4.0, I tried to move the download file to my applications folder, got a message asking if I wanted to replace a version already there, and said yes. Poof--3.6 was gone. Then when I clicked on the download file and got the screen to move Firefox to applications folder, I got the message my system would not support it. I have since deleted the download file from my applications folder, as well as all evidence on my deskbox of the download attempts. Now I am without Firefox. I'd like to get 3.6 back, and/or find out why I can't install 4.0.

You can get Firefox 3.6.16 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

  • Determining which services are associated with which programs

In the Services Preferences, Services submenu, how does one determine which services are associated with which programs?

Danged if I know! I just took a guess and enabled the ones I wanted, then tried what came up to see which program launched to do it. Some are easy: "Copy to Tex-Edit Plus" will obviously use the program Tex-Edit Plus. But I have no idea which program owns "New Document Containing Selection" and since I want TextEdit to handle that sort of thing I unchecked it, and simply checked "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection" because that's obviously TextEdit. I left "New Window with Selection" checked, and then tried it, and TextWrangler launched. OK, I do sometimes use it, so I left it checked. But it would be nice if it declared itself in the Service list so you could tell what program is going to do which thing. However, that is not Apple's fault--it is the fault of the application, someone just didn't bother to write a proper line for the system to display that would tell the user what application it is. That is probably because in the "old" Services menu items were arranged in folders by application, so there was no special need to have the service itself declare to whom it belonged. Perhaps this situation will change as applications are updated for Snow Leopard.
I happen to know that the Services are declared to the system by the application, and the place this comes from is the Info.plist of the application, which is inside the application bundle. You can open this and check the plist: the service will be listed in the NSServices section in the NSMenuItem default field. Not something most people would ever want to do, you have to open the bundle then open the plist with Property List Editor.
Meantime, I think trial and error is the only way to tell where the service is coming from. I would be delighted if someone knows otherwise.

  • How do I move my photos out of Media Smart to another file on my computer, like My Pictures?

I uploaded my photos from my camera for the first time using HP Mediasmart, and now I cannot get them into my normal photo file called, My Pictures. I normally use a windows program to upload to my computer, but thought I would try something new. Now my photos are deleted from my camera, and I cannot get them into my normal photo collection! There is no way to drag or right click or anything! How does this work?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Thank you for your input. I guess I will stick with the manual method. In a way it actually gives me more control.
As far as editing, I bet you will go "argh" with me too, because I use a very simple, free online program called "Ribbet" which I just love!  It does not organize my photos, just offers editing tools. It also saves my edited photos for future edits or even changes to edits I've already done, which most free programs don't offer. It used to be called "Picnik" until google+ ate that up and thinned it out, then absorbed what was left of it into Picassa.
Always an adventure here on the computer!
