How do I download podcasts automatically?

For some reason my podcasts don't download automatically, although I have set them to download automatically.  Do I have to have the Podcast app open on top or can it be running in the back?

Hello haackeg,
It sounds like your Podcasts app is downloading episodes automatically and you would like to stop that. This function is called Auto Download and is a setting you can turn off in the Podcasts app itself:
Use Auto Download
With Auto Download, you can automatically download new podcast episodes in the background as they become available:
After you subscribe to a podcast, navigate to My Podcasts.
Tap the podcast to bring up the podcast details.
Tap Settings > Auto-Downloads.

  • My iTunes is not downloading podcasts automatically.

Only one of my podcasts is not updating and I can't figure out why. It is Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram daily podcast. I have to manually search the iTunes store to download it but it doesn't give a brief synopsis like all the others. I have already sent an email to Living on the Edge to see if there is any reason from their end. Does anyone have a solution for this?

In the latest version of iTunes (v12), you might see an exclamation point near the podcast. This might mean that iTunes has decided you have not listened to the podcast recently and has stopped downloading podcasts automatically. The way around this is to view the podcasts in the "Podcasts" mode, not the episode list mode. (See right hand of iTunes for how to list podcasts, above the list).
Once viewed in Podcast mode, you will see the exclamation point again and you can see the problem.
This feature is terrible for several reasons.
    1) It's wrong. I have been listening to the podcast on my shuffle. Are shuffles no longer supported?
    2) You have no clue what the exclamation point means in list mode. No tool tip, etc.
    3) It should bring a pop-up stating the issue when you try to refresh said podcast automatically. If I am trying to refresh a podcast, I want to download it. Shouldn't the program tell me at that point that it is not downloading podcasts?
This is user interface "fail" of major proportions. The iTunes team needs a refresh!

  • How do i download podcast on my PC? Its asking me to type in the podcast name ending in xml but where do i find the rest ???

How do I download podcast onto my pc? I already do have iTunes. It ask me to type in podcast name ending in xml then click on install but where is the rest of the name?? where do I find this? Might be something simple I just seem to miss. Help!!! lol

The easiest way to subscribe to a podcast is locate it in a directory. There will normally be a link with the URL of the feed. This is like any other link but your podcatcher, iTunes in this case, knows how to read the text file stored there to access the individual episodes and download or stream them for you. If you know the name of the podcast, and it is registered with iTunes you can go into the podcasts section of your iTunes library, click iTunes Store, then use the search box at the top right. If you have the full URL for the podcast you can use File > Subscribe to Podcast..., or you can use a link on the providers web site.
Using the iTunes directory is usually the easiest way.
Click on the link for the podcast (4) to open the next screen,
and either subscribe (5) or download individual episodes without subscribing (6).

  • How can I download podcasts from new PC to my iPhone 4s?

The phone had been using an iMac iTunes. I've now gone to a PC. (Forced to a PC because FCPX won't support my new video camera.) On new itunes, I registered new computer, backed up iphone, synced iphone (I think) and downloaded purchased music to new computer. But ... I can't get podcasts. I can't transfer old itunes library because it's on a large external hard drive that is not FAT 31. I am willing to lose stuff on present iPhone (only one purchased app) and I can restore music, but how do I get the iphone and new computer together so I can download podcasts, new music, new apps, etc?

If you have synced with iTunes on your new computer, all iTunes content on your iPhone would have been erased first with a warning message provided beforehand indicating this would occur.
Do you have Sync Podcasts selected under the Podcasts tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and are there any podcasts available in your iTunes library on your new PC?

  • How do I download podcasts?

Hello. I would appreciate someone explaining to me how to download podcasts to my IPod. I am interested in the past sessions of Oprah's "A New Earth." I just subscribed and got the most recent podcast; however, I can't figure out how to download onto the IPod the prior ones. Sorry to be so techno-challenged. Thanks. MeMe

  • How do I download Podcasts in order of oldest date first?

I like to listen to Podcasts from the oldest episode to the most recent, but in spite of organising the itunes library 'oldest to newest' in the release date section, Podcasts still show the most recent episode first once synched with the iPod. As Podcasts automatically play the list from top to bottom you have to manually put every episode on. Any ideas?

Several of us Podcast fans would like to do this, but for some reason Apple doesn't appear to understand this. If playing them in release order (oldest to newest) automatically is possible (without playlists, see below), I've yet to see a post telling me how. But there is a solution - of sorts, that is to play one episode at a time without the next one starting ...
As Podcasts automatically play the list from top to bottom you have to manually put every episode on. Any ideas?
Yes, on the iPod Classic if you have *shuffle songs/albums* set to on, believe it or not, Podcasts will play one at a time then stop! You can then play episode two (for instance) and it will stop afterwards and not play episode one that you have already heard. Also, you can then play episodes out of sequence without the next one starting when you don't want it to.
SO, if Shuffle is off, when you play a Podcast (which has more than episode) the display will show (playing) 1 of X and will play all episodes until it reaches the end. But, if you go to the Settings menu and select *Shuffle Songs/Albums* , then play the same Podcast episode, the display will (should) say 1 of 1. When that episode finishes, the iPod will stop.
You can also select shuffle by pressing the select button while a song is playing and turning shuffle on here. However, note that if the iPod is not playing anything and you choose Shuffle Songs from the Main Menu and then a Podcast, the iPod will play Podcasts as 1 of X!
I've just discovered this after many months of frustration and using my old 30Gb video which only ever plays Podcasts as 1 of 1!
Another option I have seen suggested, which you may prefer or use as well as mine, is to put episodes into a playlist in the order you want to hear them. To be honest, I don''t know if this works - I've never tried it because "play 1 of 1" is my preferred method as I usually don't have enough time to listen to another Podcast.

  • How do I download podcasts from my iPad to my computer?

    Hi there,
I have a large collection of podcasts saved on my iPad and I would like to move them from my podcasts section on my iPad to my computer (windows 7 PC). Is this possible, and if so, how would I go about doing this?
    Thanks

You can't do it directly from the iPad to iPod, you will either need to download it from the store on the iPod or sync it via your computer's iTunes

  • How to search downloaded podcasts in iTunes

In previous versions of Itunes it was possible to search the description  of a podcast with the search field in iTunes. When i search with the current  version of iTunes the search only return matches from the title of the  podcasts.
    Example:
Title: Bicycle podcast week 42 - Mountain bikes.
Description: In this weeks podcast we'll discuss mountain bikes, as well as how to repair a broken spoke.
In previous versions of iTunes, a search for "spoke" would return a  match for this podcast, while the current version would not find any  match. Is there a setting I've missed, or is the possibility to search  for key words in the podcast's description removed?

You have made sure you are in the Lists view as I am, haven't you?
I can't remember when the alternative views came in (I don't use 'em), but the search doesn't find words in the description if you are in any of those other views. Actually, that's not strictly true. If I use the My Podcasts view and search for debut, this is what I get:
    But...
that ringed 1 replaces lots of other ringed numbers.
So before the search, a number-in-a-circle shows the quantity of unplayed episodes. Once I search, those numbers now indicate results for that search. But everything else is still displayed (Rubbish - isn't it?) Notice that the episode displayed on the right (Pheppidations) has nothing to do with the search, nothing at all! (Yup, really rubbish!) And to find the other results of the search, I have to scroll down the complete list.
Searching in the List view, shows only the results and hides non-results
Searching in My Podcasts view continues to show every single Podcast and one has to search the list to find the results. I'm not impressed!
I wouldn't hold out much hope for you with iTunes 11.1.4.

  • How can I download podcasts on iPod Touch? (I have the RSS feed.)

I have the RSS feed of a podcast that I'd like to download (not just stream) and play on my iPod Touch 4G running iOS 6. I have the Podcasts App (purple icon) and the Music App (brownish-orange icon).
What must I do? When I tap the Podcasts App, It says "You can subscribe to podcasts in Top Charts or the Podcasts Store".  Is it possible to bypass Top Charts and the Podcasts Store and just load the RSS feed URL into some app? I don't think the podcast I want to add is found in either Top Charts or the Podcasts Store.

You are correct my response was supposed to be completely useless for this thread because it is my pet peeve when somebody says 'iTouch'  Please see the picture below to see that the OP did indeed use 'iTouch'.
If you look carefully at your first reply it says 'iPod Touch', looks like they changed it after I said something.

  • How to delete downloaded podcast and reset podcast to not downloaded??

    Hi all,
Hope this is a simple question/answer. I've got several podcasts with lots and lots of downloaded episodes which I am no longer interested in keeping on my Powerbook. I can click on the episode I want to delete and delete the file once I use the "Show in Finder" option. However, the file status within the episode listing suggests the file has already been downloaded.
Is there a way to reset the status of the deleted file(s) so it indicates it needs to be deleted? I tried Refresh podcast after deleting the file, but that didn't work.
    Thanks!!
    Robert

I went through the same scenario and the absolutely easiest way is to empty all the podcasts you want to remove and then just hit the "unsubscribe" button and then re-subscribe to it. It will re-list all the available podcasts you haven't downloaded.

  • Not downloading podcasts automatically with 11.1

Since I've updated to iTunes 11.1, the podcasts I subscribe to don't download.  To get them I have to go to the iTunes store and download them there.  This takes too long!  Please fix this!

I am having the same issue but I think I might have solved it.  It looks like the "subscribe" box was unchecked when I upgraded to 11.1.  So, I went into each podcast in my iTunes library that I subscribe to, clicked on Settings in the upper right hand corner.  Then made sure that the Subscibed box was checked and "Download:  Most recent" was the download option selected.  My podcast episodes right now have been updated manually so I can't confirm this will work.  I am keeping my fingers crossed.

  • How can I download Podcast app for iOS5?

My old iPod Touch that has iOS5.1.1 cannot install the latest Podcasts app (as well as loads of others like Gmail, YouTube etc). I found this after restoring the iPod and attempting to re-install the apps I want on it (which is just for listening to music at home; my iPhone5 is mobile with me). iTunes tells me I can't install these apps since the iOS is too old. How can I find the older versions of the Podcasts app for iOS5 that I had until restoring it? Many thanks in advance!

  • How Can I Download Podcasts When The Get Episode Button is Grayed Out?

I can purchase and download songs from the itunes store with no problem. When I attempt to download a podcast, however, I am unable to do so. The Get Episode button in the Price Column is grayed-out. This "gray-out" occurs with ALL podcasts, not just one or two podcasts. I uninstalled itunes and Quicktime from Windows and reinstalled it, but that hasn't solved the problem.
    Any ideas?

Go to... Edit > Preferences > Parental Control
Make sure you don't have "Disable Podcasts" selected.
If that doesn't work, I don't know what else to tell you.
