How do I fix an improper migration; and hardware or migration issue?

I have been having screen freezes since I migrated my user account (incorrectly, I now discover) from my G5 to my brand-new, week-old precious ...er 13" Macbook Pro (2.66 processor). Doesn't matter what program I'm in and hardboot is the only way to regain any response (wince) -- the cursor just disappears, no trackpad or keyboard control. (no externals attached, no wireless either once.)
I ran the hardware test from the Applications disk: the short test reports no problems. The extended test froze after 8 minutes but it was on battery; I re-ran the extended test with it plugged in and it froze again on the first pass after 29 minutes. Had to hard-boot it both times; cancel/stop test button would not respond. I figured two freezes was an answer.
First assumption is I have a hardware issue and I need to take it back to the store.
However. When I migrated my user files, I did so without taking advantage of this forum's extensive discussions and with my head in the..er.. clouds about PowerPC to Intel issues. (I've seen several links and tips to the proper way of doing things, now, thanks. And sigh)
But I haven't seen precisely how one is supposed to fix doing it wrong. (Feel free to point me to such a place, my search-fu is not strong today.)
What I did wrong:
A. I just brought everything over using migration assistant; settings, software, everything. PowerPC-only software--heck, I might have even brought my old classic stuff in its folder. My third-party firewall and virus protection program (Intego Netbarrier) was apparently also PowerPC only, but it installed and appeared to be running.
B. I just had to play with my new toy before I migrated, so I did the apparently horrible mistake of creating a FancyNewUser account before migration.
C. When I migrated, I created a new account (UpdatedUser) for my old G5 account, settings, and information. I have not done anything to try to merge those two accounts and don't see the point; sometimes it's useful to have a separate admin account. (The migration itself, btw, was fantastically smooth.) But of course the applications are available to both accounts.
D. Oh, I did not repair permissions on the G5 before I migrated, either. *heavy sigh*
Minor note. I never upgraded the firmware on the G5 (it was having the 'sleep' issue) I just never put it to sleep. And it seems to me the laptop is freezing when I try to wake it from sleep. At any rate, the laptop was not freezing prior to the migration.
So.
1. Is there a way I (a middle-of-the-road user, not really comfy with terminal or command lines although I've used 'em) can determine if this is a hardware or an OS/software conflict issue?
2. Clearly I need to fix the migration. What's the best way to go about it? Should I
a) delete the UpdatedUser account entirely and start over? If so, am I right in thinking that I can:
aa. create a ThirdAccount on my laptop
ab. move the data I want to keep, like my photos and music and word processing files? (I think it was Kerry's tip: out of UpdatedUser's folders>a shared file>ThirdAccount's desktop>ThirdAccount's correct folders)
ac. delete the UpdatedUser account and
ad. perform fresh installs on any software I want on the laptop? (making sure, of course, that it will run on the laptop).
Uh... this skips the step of uninstalling the programs I shouldn't have migrated. I assume I can't run an uninstaller that might have come with these programs, since that, too, would have been compiled for the PowerPC. So what's the best way of getting rid of them?
(It occurs to me I could move the data to the FancyNewUser account without creating a third, but I actually like the idea of having a completely clean new account).
b) Turn the laptop over to the store, ask them to wipe it and reinstall everything so I can start from scratch?
c) some other option?
New machine
Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB Memory
320GB hard drive
NVIDIA graphics
I'm aware I'm asking a boatload of questions here. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Let's say you just start over and do an Erase & Install and then migrate using this guide:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350
This way you're not dragging over a lot of PPC junk.
I would reinstall all third party apps from their disks.

InDesign CS5 is not opening after deactivation/activation. How can I fix this? Illustrator and Photoshop open and are working fine. Please help!

First of all, thank you for replying so promptly to my posts this morning!
I can't remember how I got the software on his computer, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't through migration assistant.
I was looking into doing an uninstall of InDesign and a fresh install. However, I initially downloaded the CS5 suite digitally and I can't find out how I am able to perform a fresh install of InDesign. Do you know where I find this info or gain access to download just InDesign again? I can't seem to find anything in my Adobe account that shows where I might do another download.

  • How can I fix my shaky transitions and picture movements??? PLEASE HELP!

A very bizarre thing has happened to my project. I made a documentary so my project consists mainly of still images that either zoom in or zoom out and between every picture there is a cross dissolve transition. What's weird is that once I exported it to quicktime, the transitions got shaky (in other words, instead of smoothly dissolving from one picture to the next, the pictures would shake slightly). Also, on some pictures I have the picture start out still then zoom in then become still again. When I do this the screen almost jumps when it starts to zoom in.
What's even MORE bizarre is that once i burned this project (using iDVD) and watched it on my television, the quality was horrible whenever the pictures were moving (the pictures would shake up and down very fast). But once they stopped moving, the quality got better. What's weird about this is that the transitions don't shake and the pictures don't jump on the burned version.
Basically what I want to know is how I can fix this. I don't want to go through all my pictures and take out all the movement because 1) that would take me a year and 2) the movie looks better with the movement (if only it worked).
Please help!! I have a showing of this documentary in a week!!

Are your photos in .jpg format or .tif? I did get those "shaky" transitions but it seems to have been resolve (with me) when I converted them to .tif.

  • How can I fix consistent TCP timeout and make data flow simpler?

    Hi!
I'm acquiring data from a Scanivalve Digital Scanning Array through a TCP/IP connection. I'm having problems with the connection timing out regularly. It will run fine if you take data several times in a row, but if the VI sits for several minutes (while looking at previous data runs or adjusting test setup) the connection will timeout the next time you try to take data. The subVIs (reading the tcp connection, processing the data pakcet, etc) were provided by the manufacturer several years ago. The midlevel VI were written by another engineer, and I adapted them to run with the top level VI that I needed for this test. The data flow in the VIs are convoluted and while I can follow the ones t
hat I wrote, I'm not sure how to troubleshoot the others.
I posted a question on an unrelated problem and the responses mentioned that race conditions were going to be a problem b/c of all of the global variables.
Please be patient with my lack of knowledge in some areas. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks so much!

I'm not positive about the best solution in this situation, but there is lots of information available regarding error 56 when using TCP/IP communication.

  • How can I fix the error image and get the regular image to load?

Ever since the recent big update for Firefox I've been getting some sort of error for loading certain images.
Here: http://tinypic.com/r/103bf3l/8 I have put one of those sites that give that error
--The original image that is supposed to show is also available in that image
Certain sites give a different size of that error image, but it looks the most like an error triangle
I've already tried the troubleshoot of not loading images and none of the options worked
If someone has this problem or knows how to fix it, it would be a great help

    Solution found:
The addon "Stylish" with the theme "Google two themes" interfered with the image loading of the sites. Disabling the theme was the solution.

  • How i can fix "Wiki setting error" and "Running time error" ?

I've found this message when using server app on Mountain lion.
    and this error data.
Can i fixed this? Thanks guys!

It so happens that I saw an answer to a similar question today somewere else. I have not tested this myself:
"I have the final solution and fix but beware you may not like it that much.
Having had all of the above problems with more or less everything I finally pieced it all together from various threads. This will fix both the AEBS control and the central services problems.  Dont shout at me for being a bit basic and not coding etc. but it worked for me.  If I can avoid code I do as often as possible as am less likely to balls it up!
This method will loose some data but the main files and users do remain
    The Fix:
    1. Close Server.app
    2. Library/Server  make a copy of Server file under a diff name as software server files and a few others would appear to still be usable and you will have to re download it all again of you dont copy it back in ( I didn't and now have learned my lesson). then delete the whole of the Server file.
    3. Go to Keychain and search all Airport then delete associated keys permissions etc
    4. Delete Server.app and reinstall.
    5. Start new setup and it will migrate properly with no errors. This time a big green tick will appear!
    6. Replace the software update files into the new Library/Server folder if you want to or leave it untill the rest is done
7 Reconfigure any missing bits..... any enrolled devices will have vanished but probably if you have  saved the data from this in Library/Server prior to deletion you may be able to reinstate this but I didnt risk it
This is going to be a total pain if in a large organisation but once working the system is excellent with no swapping from one control set to the other.  As each service is switched on it auto configures the AEBS and no further errors and a joy to work with unless you really like to get into the nuts and bolts.
Hope this helps and good luck"

  • How It Was Fixed (Possible Software Bug Not Hardware): Getting the iMac Screen/Menus Garbled and/or Yellow Circle Before Getting Into Finder Issues?

Hi. Possible fix done to my late- 2009 iMac's screen/graphics issue that may work God willing, hopefully for most [In my case it sometimes had that yellow circle that appears before it goes to the Finder but mostly it was a messed up desktop and menus (unreadable mostly) after months, prayers and weeks of fixing it; recommended to be read entirely first coz' it's a bit complicated (like a lot of subplots). If uncomfortable to try coz' it involved a GPU stress test, contact your authorized Apple service center for their advice]. I had an iMac (late 2009) screen garbling a few hours ago (was weeks ago when it resurfaced until it got worse that it's at every boot on Mavericks):
†        I booted to Snow Leopard USB external (my back-up OS) drive then run the first    person shooter at redeclipse.net. I set everything to max, including the display, resolution and graphics setting with fullscreen and v-sync on. I then refreshed it which brought it back to normal (I then tested it's stability with GPUTest 0.7 with Furmark for 15 minutes). * if the display options have been set to max before, bring it back to the default then refresh and then max it again Possibly any games that's has the graphic settings (or more advanced) of Red Eclipse could work (other free ones are Xonotic and Open Arena which are based on Quake 1 or 3s engine I believe).
Optional but not recommended (have warrantied if that's still available or have it repaired at authorized service centers):
If that doesn't work, review articles and videos on how to open an Intel iMac and get an iPhone/iPad/another way to get to the 'net ready for research (I opened mine very carefully on the right side with a cutter with blade extended far prying it carefully then I inserted a flat end, sturdy plastic used for mixing epoxy then removed the cutter carefully to let the plastic mixing tool do the prying) to see if the cable connected to the logicboard which is on top of, is connected (mine was detached but I'm not sure if the adjusting and tilting of the screen overtime for 2 & 1/2 years, detached it) then do † above again.
It could to be a software problem, a possible Apple ATI driver bug that takes overtime to surface (2 1/2 years it resurfaced because this started in my case after upgrading to Lion when Apple coded things mostly from the ground up. Snow Leopard didn't have this problem).
Thank you for your time. Have a great upcoming sunday mass/great upcoming weekend. I hope this helps.
God bless, Rev. 21:4, Matt. 16:18

Does an external display also act in a similar manner as the internal one?
Some earlier Intel-based iMacs had graphic processor card issues; not sure what
the symptoms of the majority of them were, but some had odd patterns, others
went black, and some would range from OK to totally unusable. Among others.
So there is a chance the graphic processor may be going out; or just the circuitry
that controls the backlight. An inverter may be weak or other circuit to the display
    could be wearing out.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
If you have access to an Apple Store with Genius bar, they can perform some kinds
of diagnostic tests there even though the computer is out-of-warranty; that may be
of help to narrow down the cause of the symptoms you've noticed. They may not be
able to repair it, however, at an Apple Store; as it is rather old by today's standard.
An Apple Authorized Service Provider could do repairs and testing on older models
the Apple Store's Genius and other may not be set up to handle due to vintage.
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
    Visit an Apple Retail Store
There is a country locator page to help find either of the above in regions outside
of the US & Canada, not sure how the above links would work; and it appears my
bookmarks to the country locator page may not be accessible now to post here.
You may be able to get an idea about what kinds of parts support the display
function by name by looking into an iFixit.com repair guide for your iMac series.
Hopefully the parts supporting the display are the reason it is dimming down, as
a graphic processor failure likely would exhibit other behaviors than just dimming.
PS: I see you've added content to your thread after I'd started working on this
& the answer likely is a hardware repair; professional testing is worth the time
and you seem to have at least one other thread on the same topic....
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • ITunes and its support programs, iTunesHelper AppleMobleDeviceService.exe, are using up an excessive amount of system resource. What is causing this and how can I fix it?.exe and

iTunesHelper.exe and AppleMobiledeviceService.exe are doing some disturbing things:
-They are starting automatically on system startup,
-They are using excessive system resources (AppleMobileDeviceService.exe was using 50% of my CPU, and this without me plugging in a device or opening                              iTunes.),
-I cannot find them under the Programs Menu in Control Panel, meaning, I cannot uninstall them.
iTunes itself is using more system resources than I would expect. If these issues continue without a reasonable fix, I will have to consider iTunes to be malware and iTunesHelper.exe and AppleMobileDeviceService.exe to be trojans, and treat them as such.

Hey, nfcopier: ripping the executable and dynamic link library out by the roots is worth considering, thanks. It took me until tonight to find a thread similar to my own. For some reason Apple doesn't want to be known for its bloated, intractable software. W*T*F*, Apple? How hard is it conceive a pilot program which starts everything and shuts it off when it's not necessary? It's got to be do-able.

  • How can I fix auto-pairing once and for all?

My iPhone 3G will sometimes auto-pair (and sometimes not) with my Bluetooth handsfree speaker phone (Blueant S1).
I think it's a radio problem with the iPhone because it's an intermittant problem. To fix it, I have to dig down in settings, turn off Bluetooth, then turn it back on. It usually finds the Blueant device when I do that, but it defeats the convenience of having a hands free device if I have perform this reset each time.
I have also started from scratch, removing the device profile from my iPhone and adding it back. Nothing changed. It auto-pairs about half the time.
An improvement would be an app that simply resets the Bluetooth radio.
    Any other suggestions?

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

  • How do I fix my improper installation of Xcode 4.3?

I was forced to upgrade from Xcode 4.2 to 4.3 to allow development for iOS 5.1.  Unfortunately, I've botched the upgrade process I think.  I removed 4.2 by deleting the /Developer folder.  I see this recommended a lot of places but has I believe made matters worse for me.  I installed 4.3.1 and I can run Xcode and build my iphone app, but my system no longer knows where to find make or gcc etc.  I can see where they are in the /Applications/Xcode.app folders but I want the system to set this up correctly for me.  I don't know if it's done with symlinks or what.  I saw in in this forum a suggestion for deleting Xcode 4.3 via the launch pad.  I thought if I uninstall and reinstall it might set things right.  But trying to uninstall via the launch pad only deleted it from the launch pad and did not remove Xcode from the applications folder.  I can still run it from there.  While in the launch pad I noticed that the remains of my 4.2 installation is still in the launch pad.  Dashcode and other apps will still run (although I don't know where it's finding them) and of course Xcode from there crashes since it points at my old 4.2 installation that is deleted.  How to set things to right?  I don't know.

I can answer your first question. Run the xcode-select command from the Terminal to get the system to point to Xcode 4.3's new location. The following article has additional information:
    Updating to Xcode 4.3
