How do I format a new lacie external drive to work on a mac and pc?

i have a new lacie external drive. I want to partition it into 2 parts, one to use in Macs and the other in PCs.
How do I do this in Disk Utility?
thanks!

Click on the entire drive in the Disk Utility's sidebar, then on the Partition tab, and set it up. Format one partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the other as MS-DOS.

  • Formatting a lacie hard drive to work on a Mac and Pc

I'm trying to get a lacie hard drive to run with both a Mac and PC. I'm formatting the drive using FAT32 on the PC but it's limiting me to 32Gb partitions. I do have another Maxtor drive with a 111Gb Fat32 partition and the Mac allows me to read and write to it, so I know it's possible. Any ideas how to format the drive with just one large partition. Thanks

    Hi MC,
Connect the hard drive to your Mac and format it as MS-DOS. It will work with both Mac and Windows.

  • I can't get my new samsung hard drive to work with my mac and tv

I bought my first ever hard drive today. It is a Smasung M3 Portable 1.5 TB.
At first I plugged it in and it wouldn't let me drag anything from finder over to the hard drive. I did some research (googling) and followed the steps to change the format to 'Mac OS extended (Journaled)' which allowed me start dragging files across.
I then put a movie on the hard drive, waited for it to copy then plugged it into my TV (hoping to sit back and watch said movie). However the TV would not let me even open the hard drive.
I did some more "research" and read that if I changed the format to 'MS-DOS FAT' it would let me use the hard drive on Mac and PC. I tried that but still had the same trouble of the hard drive not working on the TV.
Basically, I want to use the hard drive as storage/ back up for my files BUT ALSO to put all of my movies on it and plug it into my TV.
    Can someone please help me.
PS- I am not very tech savvy. I won't be able to do anything too technical.
    Thanks you in advance (:

maybe this link will help http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/play-media-files-mac-formatted-external-hard-dr ive-hdtv/ unfortunately its for file up to 4 GB size, otherwise try to connect your mac directly to your Tv or I suggest contacting SAMSUNG about this issue, maybe the have assigned softwares for this formatting issues like in western digital for example.

  • How do you format a new LaCie 1TB HD to be recognized by FCPX?

Yesterday, I bought a new LaCie 1TB hard drive. I connected it to my 27" Mac computer, thus, the LaCie icon showed up
on my desktop and also (in Finder) under devices. Problem: I edit in FCPX, but I only find two (2) hard drives listed, neither
being the new LaCie!!?? I don't know what is wrong and Apple can't help me either!!! So, if anyone out there in the "community"
knows how to get Final Cut Pro X to recognize this new LaCie HD, I sure would appreciate a walk-through as "to how" - thanks.

Fist step is to find out whatthe format of the new drive is.
Select the drive in Finder and do a Get Info on it. What is reported as the format?

  • How can I format or erase an external drive connected to a wireless router

I am working with a mac mini running OS X 10.7.4. The mini is connected to the internet via a linksys router. I have an external drive connected to the router. The router is listed under the shared list in Sidebar. If I select the router in the sidebar the external drive is displayed as a folder. Is there a way to have this external drive treated as a drive and not a folder? I would like to be able to erase/format the drive from my mini. I know that I can connect the external drive to the mini and perform the erase but I would like to know if there is a way to do it through the router.
    thanks for the help

It is not usually possible to do this with router connected
hard drives.  Routers with this capability basically have
its own OS, usually some minimilistic form of Linux or
propriotary RTOS, that actually interface to the drives
and runs the file server.  This in itself prevents any
"outsider" from formating the attached drives.  Much in the
same way that you cannot use Disk Utility on one Mac
to format a network connected volume on another Mac.

  • How should I format an external hard drive to work with a Mac and a PC?

I need to transfer some video files from a PC to a Mac, and would like to know to best format the drive such that I can move files from the PC to the Mac.

MS-DOS/FAT32 if the drive doesn't need to contain files which are 4GB or larger. If it does, there's no solution which doesn't require third-party software; in this case, you may want to set up a network instead.

  • Previously windows used external drive to be used in mac (and windows)

i´ve just bought a macbook and planned to use a couple of external drives i previously used on my pc with time machine and whatnot. only it seems they are write-protected in mac os, so they can´t be used as back-up drives. do i have to format them again using mac, or do it in windows, or is there a way around this? and can it be done so both mac and windows recognizes it as writable?
    thanks

They're probably formatted NTFS, which Mac OS X can read but not write. There are third-party NTFS drivers, one open-source and one commercial, but you can just reformat the drive as FAT32 (MS-DOS format in Disk Utility) and it will work just fine with both your Mac and Windows systems.
If the OPs intent is to use it with Time Machine, the external drive needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) via Disk Utility. I believe there is a Windows app that permits viewing of HFS+ drives. Since you have a 'couple' of external HDDs, it's probably best to use a dedicated HDD just for TM backups.

  • Lightroom Catalogue external drive to be accessed by Mac and PC

I have Mac 10.9.1 OS and Windows 7. I have Lightroom 5 Calatogue on external firewire drive currently running from the Mac. I want to open the catalogue from my Windows 7 Lightroom 5. I can open the catalogue, but cannot see the file structure in the left pane.
Should I reformat the drive to be compatible with both platforms (after backing up of course)? What format options should I select? Is this done on the Mac or PC? Am I likely to run into any problems?
For the last few years I ran the catalogue from the PC and Mac using a firewire external drive, but this has been replaced by a smaller physical drive which is better for my travels. I used Windows XP in those days and Snow Leopard.
    Thanks in advance. Gary Wornell

It is surprising to me that you were able to get this far. If the drive is formated in HFS+ then you would not be able to view the files on the drive from Windows.

Yes this is most likely the problem and the fix. Use Disk Utility on the Mac to confirm that the drive is currently formated with HFS+ which would be why it doesn't work in Windows.
When reformatting you should use FAT or exFAT, either one will work. You can format the drive from Windows or Mac as both OSes can do it.
If you want to avoid the headache of reformating you can do what johnbeardy said and purchase 3rd party software to add HFS+ support to Windows. Your options are Paragon or MacDrive. Normally I would be wary of this since file systems are something important that you don't want to use unreliable software for but Paragon and MacDrive both look reputable.
Am I likely to run into any problems?
I would be slightly concerned about sharing a Lightroom catalog between Windows and Mac. Hopefully Adobe does not do anything stupid to introduce incompabilities between the two platforms. Make sure to keep the version numbers of Lightroom close on the two machines.

  • Formatting a new Lacie External Hard Drive

I bought a 250GB Lacie Porsche external hard drive because I was satisfied with the smooth running 160GB drive I've been using for a couple of years. In the packaging was a note saying that the drive was configured to work with various Windows formats and OS9, and that OSX users should initialize the drive using Disk Utility.
I connected the drive, and erased it, but there was no option for choosing a Mac format for the drive. I tried to back up my iTunes music folder to it, but after 16GB the transfer stopped, and there was an error message saying that my destination drive was full.
Does anyone know how I can correctly initialize the HD so I can use it with my Macs? I'm running a G4 iBook and a first generation (lampstyle) G4 iMac.
    Thanks!
    J.

  • Why would Lacie external drive stop working?

My iMac has a Lacie used for TMachine but now it doesnt appear on desktop, Disk Utility and About This Area.  The external power unit and USB cable look good too.
Any idea of the cause (or guess)
    thx

If you get a SATA USB drive cable kit adapter, you can get the HDD out of the enclosure
& attach the wires (plugs) into the drive to see if you can recover files directly; these kits
usually have their own power supply if to be used with 3.5" HDDs; while there are kits
for 2.5" HDDs that presume port-power is adequate.
Most computer stores have something along this line; be sure to ask of their return policy just in case it doesn't work, or is the wrong kit.
Hopefully you can get the goods outta it.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Formatting an External Drive to work with Leopard AND a PC

    Hello,
I have 400 GBs of video footage on an external drive that only works with PCs.
I need to get this material onto my Mac running OSX Leopard.
I am guessing that my best option is to format a second external drive to work both with Leopord and Windows. Then transfer the footage onto the 2nd external drive via a PC.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Marc Griffin

What size is this HD? FYI, FAT32 has a 2TB limit on partition size & a 4GB limit on file size.
     Cheers, Tom

My guess the problem you are running into is the drive is formatted for a PC as NTFS. OS X can read files from NTFS however it cannot write to it. Check the formatting on the drive, if it's NTFS then it should be reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), you can use Disk Utility to do this.
If you still have a PC and want to share the EHD with the PC and Mac please read MacWorld's Share an external drive between a Mac and a PC article.
