  • How do I get firefox to open a new window when i click on a link in a webpage ?

When I click on a link in a webpage in Firefox, generally it opens the new page in the window i am in (though some times it does not). How do I get it to open a new window (or tab) each time I click a link.
For example, on www.bbc.co.uk if I click on a link, the new page opens in the same window, if I then click another link in the new window, again, it opens in the same window. To get back to the original window, I have to use the back button twice. Surely there is a setting so that all 3 windows can be open on separate tabs or separate windows.
I have been to the tabs window in options, but doesn't seem to make a difference.

Open link/bookmark in new tab in same window:
*Middle-click (press the mouse scroll wheel) the link
    *Ctrl+left click the link
*right-click the link, choose "Open Link in New Tab"
    Open link/bookmark in new window:
    * Shift+Enter on the link
    * Shift+left click on the link

  • I can't get Firefox to open a new tab each time I click on a link or favorite. It keeps loading onto the current tab.

I went to Tools>Options>Tabs and entered a check mark next to the first entry, "Open New Windows in a New Tab Instead" but it still does not open a new tab each time I click on a link or one of my favorites. It used to way back in earlier versions of Firefox but hasn't for the past few iterations...am I doing something wrong or do I need to activate something else within Firefox?

That option only controls pages that would open in a new window based on the code on the website page you are visiting.
Firefox's default is to open a link or a Bookmark in the currently selected tab.
You have some options to have links and/or Bookmarks open in a new tab:
*middle-click the link or Bookmark (middle-click = press the mouse scroll wheel)
    *CTRL+left-click the link or Bookmark
*right-click the link or Bookmark and choose "Open in New Tab"
*install one of the following and set the options to automatically open links or Bookmarks in a new tab:
    **'''''Tab Utilities Lite''''': https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-utilities-lite/
**'''''Tab Utilities''''' (a few more options than the "Lite" version): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-utilities/
**'''''Tab Mix Plus''''' (a heavyweight tab utility extension): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/

  • How do I stop Firefox from opening a new tab when I click a link or navigation button (such as "home") instead of redirecting using the currently open tab?

Any time I click on a link within a page, such as the "home" link in Facebook, or the various links on the Mozilla page that I needed to follow to get to this screen, Firefox opens a new tab instead of redirecting using the tab I'm on. Also, Firefox doesn't go to the new tab, it just opens it. So if I want to actually go to the page I've just clicked on, I have to then also find and click on the new tab that just opened.

    Hello,
In safe mode link still open in new tabs?
    *[http://mzl.la/MwuO4X Firefox in safe mode]
Go to '''about:config''' and search for:
*'''browser.tabs.loadInBackground''' change its value to '''false'''.
If in safe mode the links still open in new tabs try go to '''about:config''' and search for:
*'''browser.link.open_newwindow''' change its value to '''3'''.

  • Can't get Firefox to open a new tab as my homepage or a specific url. Alwatys get 'The address isn't valid'

When opening a new tab, I keep getting 'The Address isn't valid'. Went through all the fixes given in previous threads, changing the url in about:config, running Firefox in safe mode (problem still exists with plugins disabled) resetting Firefox, changed newtab settings to about:home etc, restarted, deleted cookies. Nothing seems to work. Some other program seems to be overriding the Firefox settings. May be a virus. I am using the latest McAfee software.
I once had an add-on that brought up thumbnails with a new tab but I removed that a while back.
On the right hand side search bar of firefox I can see that Bing is one of the dropdown search engine choices not that it should make a difference but I thougth they were sometimes a bit aggresive.
Anyhow, would love to know if there is a solution as it's making me suspicious of having an undetected visus or hijacking.

Thanks for your relpy but I've already tried these solutions and no joy. I tried them again there just to be sure but still no good.
In the mean time I installed a plug-in that does this for me. I used My Homepage 1.2 and it's done the business.
Still don't know what was causing the problem. (And it wasn't a typo, I checked and copied and pasted urls from other locations...)

  • How can I stop Firefox from opening a new Tab as Babylon Search?

So I recently downloaded Babylon (for an offer), and Babylon search started to open when I open a new Tab. I've uninstalled the Babylon program and the Search Add-On, but it still keeps on opening. is there any possible way that I can fix this? I want to open my new Tab as a blank page.

    Hello, i'll teach you how:
    # First, at the web address, go to about:config
    # When a warning shows up, just hit "I'll be careful, I promise!"
    # Then at the search bar, just type this - browser.newtab.url
    # Just right click on the result, and hit "Reset"
View the picture I've attached for reference.
    That's it!

  • How do i set firefox to open a new tab with a specified web page..?

Ive just installed firefox 5, and when i open a new tab, it open with a blank page. My previous version of firefox opened with my most visited pages as thumbnails. Can i revert to this setup, or can i set firefox 5 to open a new tab with a specified web page e.g google news...?

No this isnt the problem. I want it to open a new tab with Google Search page and not with the big showcase of all my other pages.

  • When entering a new website it overrides the previous site, how can i get it to open a new tab instead

I DON'T KNOW THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM, I JUST THOUGHT THAT IF THERE IS A WAY TO OPEN A NEW TAB EACH TIME YOU ENTER A NEW WEBSITE WITHOUT OVERRIDING THE PREVIOUS ONE. YOU WOULDN'T HAVE TO REMEMBER TO ENTER THE PLUS SIGN EACH TIME YOU WANT TO OPEN A NEW WEBSITE.

The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window to open the link.
That option allows to divert such links to a new tab instead of a new window.
For links that do not specify a target use a middle-click or hold down Ctrl and left-click the link or use the right-click context menu to open the link in a new tab or window.<br />
Left-click a JavaScript link to avoid getting a blank tab.

  • How do I get Preview to open a new tab in Firefox

Sorry I am not sure where else to post this as there is no Preview category in Discussions.
Used to be a time when I clicked on a pdf link on the internet it opened up a new tab for me to view the file. Now, however it just downloads the file.
Is there a way I can use Preview to see things on my web browser like back in the old days?
    thanks,
    g

There's several add-ons available for Firefox that give you the ability to view PDFs while in Firefox.
Here's a link for one of them: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636

  • Clicking a .gif file only allows save or save as. How do you get it to open in new tab?

Doesn't appear in Options > Applications and there doesn't seem to be a way to add the filetype.

That image works for me and opens in a tab if I click the link on that page with the current Aurora build.
That file is send as image/gif and Content-Disposition: inline; filename*=UTF-8''BBCode
    <br />
Firefox shows image.php in the title bar, but if I save the image then I see BBCode.gif for the name.
If you get the save file dialog then that might be caused by the image.php name that you see if you click the image to open it in a tab.<br />
Do you have any action for the php file type?

I can't even finish typing this because I had to scroll down to see the full page.

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by malware on your pc. please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and do a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
