How do I get to "software update" on my iPhone 4? I need the latest version of iOS so I can get iCloud to transfer data to a new phone .

I need to download iCloud on my iPhone4. I currently cannot because I need to upgrade iOS. How do I do this? I cannot find "software upgrade" in my phone.

That is only a feature of iOS 5 or later...

When I clicked 'check for update' it just says that 2.2.1 is the current version
It will - until you purchase iOS 3.
Follow the link that stedman provided, and on that page, instead of choosing the link to iOS4, choose Purchase the iOS 3.1 Software Update directly from the iTunes Store. When you choose it, iTunes will open to the store and page for buying (purchasing) the update. It doesn't cost much (a few dollars although I cannot recall precisely) and it is the only way to update from you current iOS version. Once you do that, a further update to iOS 4.2.1 is free. That particular update may occur straight away, I don't know.
By the way, iOS 4.2.1 is as high as the 2nd generation Touch can go, but don't let that put you off. I have one and although I cannot install the BBC iPlayer (because it requires iOS 5) there are many Apps that work perfectly well with iOS 4.2.1.

I've just read the another discussion (to which you contributed), in which Illaass suggests that you may have a 1st generation Touch. If that is so, then your iPod will only be able to update to iOS 3.1.3. This will still need to be purchased, but be aware that many Apps require iOS 4 or higher, so your options would be more limited. So follow the link Illaass provided to confirm which model you have.

  • How do I get iCloud to back up to my new phone?

I need to get the iCloud backup that's on my old phone to my new one

To restore the iCloud backup of your old phone, go to Settings>General>Reset on your new phone, tap Erase All Content and Settings, go through the setup screens and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup and follow the prompts, choosing the backup of your old phone to restore to.
Be sure you phone is connected to wifi and your charger as it is restoring the backup.  After restoring your settings it will restart and begin restoring your camera roll and download your apps and other purchased media.

  • How do you update to the latest version of iOS?

I am trying to download a new ringtone and it says I need to update to the latest version of iOS before I can download a song.  How do I do that?

First, update iTunes on your computer to the latest version. Then connect your iPhone to the same computer. On the Summary page for the iPhone that opens in iTunes, click on Check For Update (or install the update, if iTunes already says you have an upgrade.

You can also download it as a free iBook.

I have no idea what may have caused your MacBook to stop working, but from your description it kind of sounds like it may have started before you ran Software Update and installed the new Apps. Just the general slow feeling and bugginess is what tips me off. You said that you weren't sure if you had closed all open windows, that doesn't matter if the computer restarts itself. It automatically closes all other open applications when restarting.
As to your data being retrievable, if when you take it in they do a fresh install of the OS, then no, it will not be unless you want to pay several thousand dollars to a software retrieval company.
I am glad to hear that you have taken into the Apple Store to get it fixed, and that you have all of your purchased music backed up to your iPod. You should be able to just transfer it all back to iTunes once you get your computer back should it be necessary.
As a side note, the proper place for this topic would probably in the MacBook forums, not iTunes since there is no evidence that iTunes started the issue.

how to get access to my iCloud back up when setting up a new iPhone 5s which needs the newest version of iOS7 first?

Set up the new phone as a new iPhone (without using your backup), then update it to the latest iOS (7.1.2).  Then go to Settings>General>Reset, tap Erase All Content and Settings, go through the setup screens again and when given the option, choose Restore from iCloud Backup and follow the prompts.  This process is explained in more detail here: iCloud: Restore your iOS device from iCloud.

where do i update my snow leppard to the latest version of it so i can upgrade it and do i have to get lion next or can i skip that and get mountain lion?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.

  • HT1338 how could iI upgrade my OS from Mac OS 10.5.8 to the Latest version Mountain Lion

how could iI upgrade my OS from Mac OS 10.5.8 to the Latest version Mountain Lion

    Hello,
You need to get 10.6 & update to 10.6.8 first to be able to buy it from the App Store & download it.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It's been pulled from the online store, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard, but quick, call before it's gone!
    Call Apple 1-800-MY-APPLE
You have to get 10.6.8 first to go even higher to 10.7 or 10.8
