How do I identify a runaway process in the finder?
My wife is complaining that her MBP (2.5 GHz C2D, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD & 500 GB HD, MacOS 10.6.8) is running hot all the time. On checking with activity monitor I see that the finder is using 80-130% CPU most of the time. This does not seem to happen if I log into another account onthe MBP.
I sampled the processes under high load - can anyone make sense of this?:
Sampling process 142 for 3 seconds with 1 millisecond of run time between samples
Sampling completed, processing symbols...
Analysis of sampling Finder (pid 142) every 1 millisecond

Using the CPU tab of Activity Monitor, why don't you just see if some process or application is responsible for using an excessive amount of CPU?
EDIT: Oh I see, you already know it's the Finder? Have you simply tried restarting? If that doesn't help, then move this file in your home folder>Library>Preferences to the Trash (but don't empty it yet.)
com.apple.finder.plist
Then relaunch the Finder by entering this command in Terminal in Utilities and hit return.
killall Finder
After doing this, you will need to restore your Finder settings. If this doesn't work, then just use File>Put Back from the Trash.

How can I identify and delete duplicates on the latest version of itunes?
How can I identify and delete duplicates on the lastest version of iTunes?
The show duplicates/show exact duplicates features have been left out of iTunes 11. Rumor suggests they will be restored in the next build. In the meantime I have written two Windows scripts to make playlists of Duplicates and Exact Duplicates, either from a selection of tracks or the entire library. Note that, as with the iTunes feature, this list makes no distinction between "originals" and "dupes", you have to decide which is which.
There is also my DeDuper script for automatically removing duplicate copies but keeping one remaining copy of each set. This can preserve ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. which are lost in a manual clean up. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background on deduping and the script.
If you want to manually remove duplicate tracks use shift-delete to remove selected tracks from the library as well as the playlist. Keep one of each repeated group of files and don't send the others to the recycle bin unless you are sure that there are multiple files on the disc as opposed to multiple entries to the same file. Same advice to backup applies.

How do I remove an old file from the Finder Favorites list?
Good Afternoon.
I have a shiney new MBPro with 10.7.1.
On my old machine running Snow Leopard, I had two .xls files I used often that I had dragged to the left side into the favorites. The truth is, I hadn't used them in months, but hadn't bothered to remove them. Then about ten days ago, the Bad Thing happened, and I had to replace my laptop rather suddenly. The nice folks at the Apple store transferred all the data and I was off an running in just a few hours.
Now, I thought to myself, I should remove those two files since I don't use them any more. But how?
If I click on them nothing happens. If I right-click on them, nothing happens. I can't drag them out because they don't drag and they aren't listed on the list of favorites that can be toggled on and off in preferences.
I checked. The files did still exist but deleting them didn't remove their names from the favorites list.
Any suggestions as to how to remove these two .xls files from the Finder's Favorites list?
Thanks. A picture is below.The msot amazing person ,just posted an answer to my other question which worked here too.
Three cheers for Kappy!
Just hold down the CMD key and drag them off. How simple is that?? They didn't klnow this at the Genius bar when I asked this morning. I am amazed.
I wish I knew how to send Kappy cookies.
Thank you Kappy. -
HT204266 How do I retrieve a lost iphone with the Find My Iphone app?
How do I retrieve a lost iphone with the Find My Iphone app?
I got my iphone stolen right out of my bag and I am assuming there is no way of retrieving the phone back unless I have the Find My Iphone app? I am hoping someone could prove me wrong or give me another solution to getting it back. I have a lot of photos, videos and memories in that phone and I would do anything to get it back. Please help!"I got my iphone stolen right out of my bag and I am assuming there is no way of retrieving the phone back unless I have the Find My Iphone app?"
It is not an app. It is a feature of icloud and iphone. Did you set it up on the iphone itself BEFORE it was stolen? If not, then you cannot track it at all.
Change your passwords and report it to the police. -
How to delete when file in use by the finder?
I have two files in my trash which won't delete. I get the error that they are being used by another program. Holding down option, using secure empty trash, using the terminal method of deleting the trash.. none of them work.
So I did the terminal command: lsof /path-to-file and found out it was being used by Finder. I don't think I can exactly quit the Finder process in Activity Monitor.. so how can I get these files out of my trash?Thanks. Unfortunately, when I quit finder and try to delete the files in the trash by the following command:
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
It tells me "Directory not empty". Argghh..
I feel like I've tried everything. Can someone give me some other suggestions? Thanks -
How do U get icloud to appear in the finder
in Mountain Lion you can save text edit files to the icloud. How do I get iCloud to appear in the sidebar in Finder. On icloud only iwork is displayed for files. I usedropbox and it looks just like any other folder in Finder. Does iCloud behave the same?
Thanks. It began to dawn on me that this was the case as I try to poke around for ways to do this. I will continue to use Dropbox which works fantastically. Just wonder why Apple would come up with such a limited option.

How can I call a Page Process from the Select statement for Report Page
I'm able to call a javascript using the below:
img src="#IMAGE_PREFIX#add2.gif" border="0" alt="Icon 4" onClick="javascript:add_connect1('||CPORT.ID||')"
But Now,
I'd like to accomplish (2) New things:
1. instead of using,....... onClick="javascript:add_connect1,
I'd like to call a Page Process, onClick=
2. I'd like to be able to call two different processes onClick.
a. onClick="javascript:passBack('||ID||')"
b. onClick= <Please see my question #1 above>
Can someone please help me with the syntax for this,
If indeed it can even be done?
Thanks- GaryGreg.
It seems that my situation is the one you describe in you second paragraph, where you mention:
you could then add the ID column value as a parameter to the javascript functionBut,
I do not know how to reference the variable in my javascript nor how to use it in my on-demand process.
If you can hellp me past this last little bump, then I think I will be able to use these skills in Sooo many different areas of my design.
Here's what I've got so far:
A. In the select statement I identify the javascript as:
onClick="javascript:connect_port('<font color=blue>''||ID||''</font>')";
B. In my javascript I have this:
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
function connect_port(ID)
var get = new htmldb_Get(null,$x('pFlowId').value,'APPLICATION_PROCESS=CONNECT_PORT',0);
gReturn = get.get();
get = null;
</script>
C. In my on demand function I have this:
BEGIN
INSERT INTO CCONNECTIONS_B
BLDG_ID,CLST_ID,PORT_ID,STRAND_ID
) VALUES
:P2004_BLDG_ID,:P2004_CLST_ID,:P2004_PORT_ID,:P2004_STRAND_ID1
END;
You can see that I dont know how to use the value for 'ID' in either the javascript or the On-Process function.

How can i identify my iPad generation with the model number in the settings app
I can't see the back of my iPad because my case is stuck on it. Hence I would like to know is there a way to figure out your iPad generation by having the model number on your settings app. Mine is MD527AE/A
Thanks ! How did you figure that out so soon, I've been going crazy googling and trying to find it !
Thanks again -
How do I recover a device deleted from the Finder sidebar?
I connected a Garmin Edge 800 GPS unit to my MacBook Pro to backup its files. I made a file on the computer named "Garmin" to copy the files into. In the sidebar, in Finder, two devices showed, one named "Garmin" and the other "No Name" which is the mini SD card for the Garmin unit. I thought I'd try dragging "Garmin" into the folder but when I dragged and dropped it went up in the cloud of smoke icon. The actual Garmin unit works fine but when it's plugged in the only thing showing in the sidebar is "No Name". If I eject "No Name" and disconnect I get the message that "Garmin" wasn't ejected properly, so I know it's being detected, I just don't see it in the sidebar any more. It wouldn't matter to me except I need to open the Garmin unit so I can copy the files.
I looked in "Trash" but nothing named "Garmin" exists there. I also tried restarting the computer and the Garmin before reconnecting but the only device showing in the sidebar is the "No Name" mini card. So, how do I get the unit to show up in the sidebar again?
Thanks in advance,
DougI got the answer from Reddit - Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > Devices > External disks.

How do I 'see' Go Pro files in the 'Finder'.
When connecting my Hero 2 to the Mac, iPhoto found the clips and they're viewable in iphoto no problem. In order to convert the files to be edited in FC Express, I've used MPEG Streamclip. I've converted about 8 files so I now have the original clip and the Streamclip file. As I started to convert the 9th clip it came up saying there was insufficient room so it aborted.
I worked out that I must have 2 versions on the computer so for the files I hav ealready converted, I thought I would just delete the originals imported into iPhoto. When I used Finder - i can't 'see' these originals anywhere?thanks Al - these forums are great
I've also been reading about the back up process using TM - I now realise the TM drive is full as it's trying to back up onto a 500GB disk every day and the GOPro files total 370gb. I think I'm going to buy a second back up drive and save the originals before I delete anything from thois hidden location -
How to locate your ipod touch? Using the finder.
Okay my ipod touch was stolen today at school. And I saw the track your ipod thingy and that setting is on, but I never knew how to use the locator when you lose your ipod/stolen because I want to track this theft and I want to prosacute him or her! And if you solve this im calling the police on the person who stole it. It had my company's information but it does have maxed out security. I have a 15 digit password, and my browsers are blocked as well as photos.
So can you please respond!

How do I twirl open multiple folders in the Finder?
I have a main folder. Inside of the main folder are 55 folders. Inside of EACH of those 55 folders are two files: an audio file and a video file. I need to copy all of the audio files to another drive. What I want to do (in my main folder, in list view) is twirl open all 55 folders, select all 55 of the audio files, and copy them over to my other drive.
Is there a way to do this? Or am I just going to have to manually twirl open each of the 55 folders?
(I'm at work, where I'm using Mountain Lion on a Mac Pro. But I have Mavericks at home.)
(And, yes, I'm aware of the irony that it has taken longer to submit this question than it would have taken just to manually twirl open each folder, which is what I'm going to do after submitting this. But knowing the answer to this will be REALLY good to know for future reference! Thank you.)Select all the folders and then press the Command and right arrow keys.
