How do I install Linux Mint 17 from USB on Flex 10?

Hello everybody,
I want to install Linux Mint 17 on my Lenovo Flex 10 device.
I tried to make two different bootable installation USB sticks using the Rufus software but when I try to boot from them, the boot menu show only Windows. It seems that Flex 10 doesn't like my USB sticks. One is former Mandriva USB, the other is ADATA S102/8GB USB 3.0. Should I try another USB stick?
I've read several threads relating to this; someone suceeded, more people didn't get any answer.
One suspicious thing is that Rufus says that I need an EFI ISO image when I choose the UEFI MBR or UEFI GPT partition scheme. Isn't the Mint ISO an EFI ISO image? So the only option that remains is "BIOS or UEFI" scheme. I think that should work but it doesn't. They say that Mint 16 already supports UEFI. So Mint 17 should too.
Other thing is that there might be an issue with 32/64bit UEFI. How do I switch between 32 and 64 bit UEFI?
Am I missing something? What am I doing wrong?

Go to Solution.

So I'm going to answer my question myself. * Edit: An ironic note to Lenovo removed. They don't deserve it. *
For everybody who wants to boot or install Linux to Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 10:
Flex 10 has a 64-bit processor but a 32-bit EFI (UEFI) firmware!
Therefore I guess most of us have 32-bit Windows pre-installed for it.
Because Microsoft is so poor that they cannot provide us with a 64-bit system with a 32-bit bootloader. Oops, they cannot provide Lenovo with that combination.
And Lenovo, you guys prepared me a hell solving the riddle why only my Flex 10 doen't boot Linux, neither 32-bit distros nor the 64-bit ones.
* Edit: Not removing this one. Yes, you prepared me a hell but it was also a big fun solving the riddle. *
Because the 32-bit distros don't count with UEFI at all (they suppose older firmware, so called BIOS) and the 64-bit ones don't count with a 32-bit UEFI.
So I had to download a bootloader one guy precompiled for others to boot the USB with the installation ISO image for Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit. Here is the bootloader file:
https://github.com/jfwells/linux-asus-t100ta/blob/master/boot/bootia32.efi
The next post was very helpful to me. There I discovered that I have to download or compile a 32-bit UEFI bootloader:
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Flex-10-the-installation-of-Linux/td-p/1516596/page/2
And here I finally followed the instructions how to boot to the USB stick and it helped me a lot in the overall process and progress:
http://www.jfwhome.com/2014/03/07/perfect-ubuntu-or-other-linux-on-the-asus-transformer-book-t100/
There you will see that you have to follow these steps:
Shrink your C drive in Windows and create a new partition to be deleted and re-used by Linux (Windows doesn't like surprises).
Turn off the Windows Fast Boot option (or Windows could damage your Linux partitions).
Compile or download (see above) a bootloader for the USB stick.
Boot the stick, make sure the live image runs.
Run the installation from the live system and install your Linux to the space you created previously (by deleting the new partition and creating root, home and swap partitions there).
Boot to the newly installed system using the USB stick (you still aren!t able to boot to Linux from disk).
You can skip the step of compiling WiFi drivers. On Flex 10, they work perfectly out of the box.
Following the instructions on the last linked page, compile Grub for 32-bit EFI and install it onto your disk. Here I suggest a slight change against the instructions. Don't name the compiled Grub "grubx64.efi" but leave the name "grubia32.efi". I don't know why but after leaving this name, my Flex started to boot Ubuntu from disk.
Edit: You don't have to compile Grub. In your newly installed system, issue the three following commands (this will install the Grub version for 32-bit UEFI, remove the 64-bit UEFI version, and clean up possible mess caused by removing it):
sudo apt-get install grub-efi-ia32
sudo apt-get remove grub-efi-amd64
sudo grub-install
Don't forget to change Grub settings in /etc/default/grub. Also do not forget to run the command "sudo upgrade-grub".
You can skip the step with compiling new kernel with Flex. Hardware support seems already pretty good (except of touchpad).
The touchpad interprets a single tap with a finger as a right click. You can disable tapping and get used to the buttons as a temporary solution. It doesn't swap the buttons if you set so. If you are left-handed as me, you can force the swap of the buttons by issuing xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1" from a terminal or from a script that you can run automatically on startup.
I followed exactly the same steps with Linux Mint with a full success.
On the start, I thought that Linux installation on Flex 10 was impossible.
As you can see, it is possible. And if you want, you will succeed and reach that goal.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • How run live/install linux from usb/sd?

Hi there, im trying to run in live mode a linux distro (e.g. Backtrack or Ubuntu) from usb key but im experiencing issuess...
i tried Uinetboot usb creator and even partitioning the removable drive in hfs and ext4 with rEfit installed in the first one and the linux image in the latter but i always see something like "no bootable disk"...
which is the best way to do it?

There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.
This is 5 page thread, so a little more 'meat' to it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3410900?start=60&tstart=0
And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a  mac-model device ID string that specifies yes.  An unnecessary hurdle.

  • Hi, I have a late 2008 iMac with a new hard drive. How do I install Mountain Lion from my bootable USB flash drive.

How do I install Mountain Lion to a new hard drive without having the recovery partition on it.
I have the USB flash drive with software on it but when I switch my Mac on all I have is a white screen & a flashing question mark.
    ATB,
    Steve.

Did you use LionDiskMaker or DiskMaker X?
Boot the machine with the option key down until you see your bootable USB stick.  Select the latter, and reboot.
When the installer boots up, you will first need to choose Utilities and Disk Utility. Select the target HD device name and then the partition tab. Select 1 partition, name it Macintosh HD. Format is Mac OS Extended, and option is GUID. Apply. Exit Disk Utility and return to the installer, which will now show your newly partitioned HD as available for install.
When OS X is installed and all updates applied, press shift+command+U and run disk utility again. Verify/repair permissions and verify the boot disk.

  • How do I install Lion onto a USB thumb drive or SD card

    Hi, folks..
I'm not asking about how to create a Lion installation thumb drive or SD card, or copy the recovery partition to a USB drive or SD card. I already have a backup Lion install thumb drive. What I am hoping to do is create a bootable Lion thumb drive or SD card on which I can also have Drive Genius and other utilities -- so I can boot from the thumb drive or SD card and work on my unmouted nternal hard drive.
Is it as simple as installing Lion onto the thumb drive or SD card, or is there more to it than that?
I've tried searching for this, but everything I've found has been about creating an install SD or thumb drive.
    Thanks in advance!

Okay, so I ran the Lion Install app and directed it to install onto my USB thumb drive. Everything looked like it was doing what I wanted, and since the screen showed that it would take about 17 minutes I stepped away for about a half-hour. When I came back my screen was off, and when I pressed a key the progress bar said it would take another 11 minutes. Huh? I went away again for another half-hour, and when I returned the progress bar hadn't moved -- still 11 minutes.
Okay, I was working on a USB drive, no big thing. No keypresses did anything, so I hit the power button on my Mcbook Pro, shut the sytem down, then started it back up. It booted to a screen to setup Lion. Hmmm.... I shut the system down (this time from the Apple menu), pulled the USB thumb drive, powered back up, and ended up at the same place.
I rebooted, this time holding the Alt key, and saw that my Macintosh HD had been renamed to something about install. Booting from that partition gave me no option but to complete a Lion installation.
Thankfully I have a Time Machine backup, and the recovery partition worked, so my system is back up (although some of my preferences seem to have changed, even though my backup was current -- another "huh?").
So, what did I do wrong?

  • Install windows 8 from USB on X1 Carbon

I am trying to install windows 8 from the 3 disks that came with the X1 Carbon. There is no DVD drive and we have no external disk drive, so I need to create a bootable USB for this. The laptop came with windows 7 on it.
It is easy to use DISKPART to ready the USB as a bootable device, but how to I take the data from the 3 DVDs and put it onto the USB so that it works? The first one only has drivers but the OS install is split onto two disks. I referred to a KB article but it was talking about autorun files that are not present on these DVDs.
The DVDs I have are labeled as (1) Applications and Drivers Recovery Disk, (2) OS Recovery Disk Windows 8 Pro [Disk 1 of 2], and (2) OS Recovery Disk Windows 8 Pro [Disk 2 of 2].
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
Sorry I don't have a solution for you.  I've tried to do what you're attempting without success.  Tried every trick I could think of. The best I could do was getting "disk" 1 to boot but it could never find the rest of the image from the other disks whether they were on separate USB drives or all on one.  It can easily be done with Microsoft install media, but not recovery media.
My efforts were with Win 7 Lenovo media.  It's possible that things have changed w/Win 8.
My only suggestion is to use an external DVD drive.

  • How do I install Elements 13 from the diskdrive on another computer?

I bought a hardcopy of Elements 13. I want to install it on a Windows 7-desktop pc.
However, this pc does not contain a diskdrive, therefore I want to install it from the diskdrive on my laptop.
Both computers are in my home-network. I do have administrator rights. @From the desktop I can see the contents on the disk. I can even start to run and it is possible in the startscreen to choose installing Elements 13.
Then, the resulting message is: "the specified file cannot be found"......
How do I install the software?

Your best bet is to download it and install it that way.  You can download the trial and use your serial number to activate it to full use (there is no difference between the trial and the full version other than the missing activation).

  • Installing Windows 7 from USB flash (Macbook Air mid 2012)

    Hello,
I read some famous instructions, but they are not for Macbook air mid 2012 as there are some missing options in their Bootcamp Assistant and this on macbook air 2012.
Btw, they suggested some rEFIt program which supports installing windows from usb which is made in 2010 but it has not been updated since then. I tried it but it doesn't work like it is described in instructions.
I have my USB and Windows 7 on it, but i don't know how to install it on the Macbook Air 2012.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Kind Regards,

    Hello,
Thank you for the explanation that helped me to understand Windows 7 installation process!
Unfortunately i need more additional information as Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide is very poor with information that i need.
To explain you better what i mean on, i will quote Boot Camp Guide parts with underlined sentences that have been confusing me. Some sentences that have been confusing me more than other ones will be additionally bolded. I will explain you why i don't understand it after every part.
    1. "Introduction"
"You can install Windows with an installation disc you provide or, on some Mac computers, with a USB flash drive that contains a Windows ISO images downloaded from Microsoft. Boot Camp Assistant helps you burn the image to the flash drive."
-But i already have my iso image on the USB flash drive. There is no need to be burned again?
    2."What you need"
"Boot Camp Assistant erases the flash drive, and copies to it the Windows 7 ISO image and software drivers that let Windows work with your Mac hardware."
-Erasing the flash drive? Does it mean that it will delete my WIndows 7 which is already on my flash drive?
-Copying Windows 7 ISO image and software drivers to my flash drive? Why? I already have Windows on my flash drive! Software drivers? How do i get them and where shall i place them?
    3."Prepare your mac for Windows"
"If you want to install Windows from a USB flash drive and you have a Windows 7 ISO image, select option to copy the image to a USB flash drive."
Why shall i select the option to copy Windows 7 ISO image?
1.I already have it on my flash drive.
    2. I don't have it on my Macbook so there is no place in a ssd where Boot Camp will find Windows 7 ISO image.
    Here is the overview:
Guide is telling me to select the option to copy image to a USB drive which will first erase my USB flash drive and then copy Windows 7 and it's software drivers to my USB flash.
-But only thing that i need is Windows support software and i don't know whether to download it to desktop, or to USB flash drive.
    Kind Regards,
