How do I make middle click open a link in a new tab?

Previously, when I clicked a link using the wheel click on my mouse, it opened the link in a new tab. I recently updated firefox, and now if I middle click (wheel click) on a link in Firefox, nothing happens. I just want this feature back. I tried looking in my mouse settings but could not find a relevant setting there. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I should add: I have also lost the ability to middle click on a tab to close it.

This is consistent and started with the beta.

I upgraded to v3.6.22 today and have lost the ability to ctrl-click a link to open the link in a new tab; how do I get this back?

Strangely enough, putting my laptop into Hibernate mode solved the problem. It didn't even take a reboot.

  • When I click a link, it changes to the new page instead of opening the link in a new tab.

I've gone to the options section several times and the right settings are in place but it still doesn't open in a new tab. I've never had this problem before. Should I change back to 3.6 or 4 beta? This problem occurs on the newest update. I believe it's 4.0.1 or something like that...I just loaded it yesterday. How can I fix this? Thank you.

It's normal for links to open in the same tab as you browse if you left-click. You can Ctrl+click or middle click to open a link in a new tab. Are either of those broken?
Some sites let you use a regular left click to open a link in a new tab (example: Google search settings), and some add-ons may change link behavior. Can you check whether one of your add-ons has been disabled?

Also, if you use the Ask toolbar, try disabling it and see whether that makes any difference.

  • How to Open External Links in a New Tab

I want links in web pages to open in the current tab so I have browser.link.open_newwindow=1. But how do I make links from extenal applications open in a new tab?

Try setting the following to 3, not really sure if preference was actually removed or just won't accept 2, the intent was that the two variables be the same (I think)
browser.link.open_external -- Where to open links sent to the browser from an external application
    * 2 (default in SeaMonkey): Opens external links in a new window
    * 3 (default in Firefox): Opens external links in a new tab in the most recent window
    * 1 (or anything else): Opens external links in current window
Note: In Firefox 2 and above, via “Tools → Options → Tabs → New pages should be opened in:” (same as browser.link. open_newwindow)
    Pref removed from Firefox 3.5

I had the same problem. If you're running Greasemonkey, you need to update it. There's a conflict between Greasemonkey 0.9.10 and Tab Mix Plus on Firefox 6.0.2. Until the add-ons site approves Greasemonkey 0.9.11, you'll have to install it manually.

  • "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" option has no effect on command+clicking on links.

Whether this option is ticked or un-ticked, command+clicking a link will open the link in a new tab and immediately switch to it.
Is it possible to change this behavior so that command+clicking on a link will open the link in a new tab in the background?

Did you try to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting?
Does holding down the Shift key in addition (i.e. Command + Shift and a left-click) has any effect?

  • Command + right click won't open a link in a new tab.

A while after I'd updated FireFox (not immediately after the update, it took a few days) pressing command and clicking a link wouldn't open the link in a new tab anymore. Other tab-related shortcuts do work, just not this one. It doesn't matter which site I'm on or whether the site uses flash etc.

I have also just had this problem and un-installing the Ask toolbar has done the trick straight away :D Thank you!

  • Why does rightclick+t on a link open the link in a new tab, yet rightclick+t on a bookmark on the toolbar grays it out?

This happens to be more of an issue using a trackpad. Then you rightclick on a link and then hit "t" it opens the link in a new tab. when you do the same command on on a bookmark on your bookmark toolbar, it grays the bookmark out. none of the settings have been changed on it. the way to fix it, i discovered is to right click on the bookmark and hit "p" no idea why, but this solved it. I can't find any of these command online, partly i don't know how to correctly search the rightclick command, but partly, it would only probably list the commands that actually show up as stuff to click with your mouse.
I would also like to know why for two different locations that both open a link in a new tab, why the mapped shortcuts are different. for a link, it is rightclick+t, for a bookmark it is rightclick+w. I mean, make it the same commands, it makes much more sense that way.

Because the "T" in "Open Link in New <u>T</u>ab" is underscored in the link context menu (right-click menu)
You are on Windows 7 and by default Microsoft hid that useful information by default in all of their menus.
See item #9 on my page [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/windows-7/win7.htm Windows 7 Home Premium]
<b>Restore missing underscored letters in menus</b> (turned off by default in Windows 7)
    <br>Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center (<b>WinKey+U</b>) → <i>Make the keyboard easier to use</i>
<br>&nbsp; [x] Turn on Toggle keys
<br>&nbsp; [x] Underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys
<br>&nbsp; [&nbsp; ] Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen.
<p>Toggle keys appears both under mouse and under keyboard in Ease of use / Accessibility options.
<br>Though I would like to activate the last option, preventing windows from being automatically arranged
would also deactivate my favorite Windows 7 added WinKey+&lt;arrowkey&gt; keyboard shortcuts to resize window to left/normal/right side, or to maximize/norm/minimize window.&nbsp; On a dual/extended monitors this would be left/norm/right on each monitor so left/right arrow actually have six positions passing between monitors.

Sometimes when I open a link in a new tab and then switch to the tab, the address bar clears and I'll have to re open the tab and hope that doesn't happen again. Sometimes this happens again and again. Most of the times if I just open the link in a new tab and don't switch to it, this won't happen. But as I switch too the tab, the text would disappear and the link wouldn't open.

  • "When I open a link in a new tab, switch.." Doesnt work correctly

I'm using Firefox 28.0 (Waterfox build)
    I've verified that:
    - browser.tabs.loadInBackground: False
    - browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground: True
