How do I restore the computer from a system image backup?

Hi, Please help me.
I am running Windows 8.1 Pro on a HP Compac DX 7500
After a misfortune installation of VirtualBox I decided to make a system restore to the restore point I created just before the installation. That did not work at all.
Windows 8.1 does not boot any longer.
I have the following options for booting:
* Normal boot                                              Result: Logging in Then welcome. Than black
Esc Boot menu                                            I can select different drives for booting
When selecting primary HD Same result as normal boot.
I could boot from CD or DVD and maybe from an USB.
F9 Diagnostic boot                                   When running it I get the error code. See 1) below
F10 Setup Entering BIOS
F11 Recovery                                          Same result as normal boot.
F12 Boot from LAN
I have located the Windows Image backup folders. Should I put the image folder on a DVD or an USB drive and boot from that or how should I do?
1) Boot path testing. Error code: BIOHD-4 Uninitialized / corrupt boot structure detected.
Regards

If you got it by download and are still using the same Apple_ID, it is still sitting on Apple's Mac App store for re-download whenever necessary, such as after you wipe your computer.

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.

If you are printing via a Windows shared printer and it is the Windows user account that you are being prompted for then you can save this in the Keychain, as shown below.

How do you prevent the computer from shutting down when in sleep mode and plugged in?

    Thanks tjk.
Those are great suggestions and got me looking in places I had not considered before. Unfortunately, the problem remains. The System Preferences did not have the shut down option activated and there are no parental controls active on the computer.
    Any other suggestions are welcome.

    Hi Diovizor,
Make sure that you do not use [http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Clear%20Recent%20History Clear Recent History] to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox.
Also please make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode.
You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: Use custome settings for history. Uncheck "Always use permanent Private Browsing mode"
    Hope that helps!

  • How do I restore a Windows 8.1 system image if I upgraded from Windows 8?

I have a new HP Envy TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC 15-j003cl.
It came with Windows 8 which I upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I created the HP Recovery USB flash drive.
From my reading I understand that the recovery USB flash drive is Windows 8 not 8.1.
    My question is:
Can I restore a Windows 8.1 System Image Backup I made on a USB hard drive using the Windows 8 recovery USB flash drive?
Or, to put it another way, what is the recommended procedure to back up an upgraded Windows 8.1 computer so, in the event of hard-drive failure, I don't have to start with Windows 8, upgraded to 8.1, re-install all my apps?
    Thanks
    Kirk

OK here's where I am now and a few followup questions,
    Started with Windows 8.
Upgraded from Windows Store to Windows 8.1
Installed lots of apps and got everything running the way I like.
I created a full system image of my upgraded 8.1 hard drive to an external USB hard drive.
I have successfully created a recovery boot USB flash.  (did not copy recovery partition) I can restart the computer from
it and navigate up to the point where it will restore my system image made after I upgraded to 8.1.  (I don't want to risk
trying it for fear it will mess up my computer)
Assume my hard drive failed and I have a new blank hard drive:
My question is at this point does it matter that this was originally a windows 8 (not 8.1) computer?
Will I be able to restore the image of 8.1?
Does it matter which version of Windows I created the recovery boot USB flash on?  ( I can't tell when it boots from the
recovery USB flash if it is running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
I wish there was a way to test this without risking losing all the work I have done to configure the computer??
    Thanks,
    Kirk

  • How can I restore the data from a single application in icloud?

Here is my situation. My iPad2 is constantly crashing. Whenever I use an app it runs for about 30 seconds and then the screen blinks black and I go back to my my home screen. At first I erased all the data and settings and tried to restore my backup from icloud. When I did this, it started crashing again right away. Then I erased all the data and reset it to run as a new ipad. In doing this, I redownloaded all my apps and everything is working fine. However, I have about a years worth of data in NoteShelf (note taking app) that is on icloud but that I cannot access. How can I just restore the data from that one app?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately you cannot selectively restore from a backup, it's either all or nothing.

  • How to clear just the computer name before getting image of the hard disk?

    Hi,
I have a Win 7 PC with some applications installed on it and I don't have the installation files of the applications. Now I want to create an image of the C drive, and use it on other PCs. So I need to just clear the computer name and shutdown
the PC and use an imaging software to make an image of the C drive, so when I deploy the image on a new computer, on the first startup screen it'll ask for JUST computer name.
I tried to use sysprep but it look like clearing more data  than I want (just PC name). Also the AIK solution look like I have to have the installation files of all the softwares that I want to have on my computer.
In one sentence: How to clear the computer name before getting image using a disk image tool (Acronis, Ghost,...)?

    Hi,
Sysprep will do this job. But when the system boot up, it will generate new computer name.
In general, you need boot to win pe after you run systprep. I think you can create a USB bootable device.
In win pe, you can use ImageX or DISM tool to capture the image.
I'm not fimilar with the tools you referred since they are not from Microsoft, so I cannot give any direction about it.

  • How can I restore events/tasks from a system backup using prefs.fs and local.sqlite?

I accidentally deleted a calendar holding all my thunderbird tasks. I was now able to restore the calendar from my backup. I restored the following files:
    * profile-folder/calendar-data/local.sqlite
    * profile-folder/prefs.js (here: I did a diff and added only the section of the deleted calendar)
Still no events and tasks are available from the deleted calendar.
The calendar is now available in the Calendar tab.

  • How can I get the photos from my old icloud backup on to my computer?

I got a replacement phone and now there are 2 iphone backups.  There's the old phone with the pictures on it I would like to put on to my windows 8 pc.  I can't figure out how to get them.  I can't restore them to my iphone because I already have another file in icloud for that.  How can I get the old file with my pictures on to my computer??

You can only access them by restoring the backup to your phone.  You can backup your phone (such as by backing it up to your computer using iTunes), restore the old backup, transfer the recovered photo to your computer (iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer), then restore the backup you made earlier to return your phone to its current state.

  • How do you start the computer from a previous date.

I overloaded my desktop and now the computer is frozen. It will turn on but none of the applictions work. I can pull up preferences. I would like to start my computer with a previous date when everything is working.  Please tell me how to do that. I know how to put it in safe boot.
    Thanks,

To return your computer to a previous date you have to have been doing backups with the Application called TimeMachine.  It is turned off, by default.   TimeMachine automatically backs-up your user files to another disk or to rounter with a backup disk.  When TimeMachine is enabled, you can return to any time or date in the past by running the TimeMachine application and doing a Restore on the date and time you choose.
If you didn't have TimeMachine running or a current backup....
FYI:  Microsoft's Windows has a feature to restore it's Registry to a previous date, but that is not backup of the user files.   It allows the system to replace the Registry database back to a point where it was not corrupted.
A similar fix for the Mac OS is to reboot the computer and hold down 4 keys to reset the PRAM (that is your system Preferences).  This is a very quick fix and it should be the first thing you try.   As the system is restarting, hold down the OPTION- COMMAND-P-R keys all that the same time.
Failing that, you can boot the system up in SAFE mode, which brings up the Mac OS without enabling any of the extensions.   It requires a wired USB keyboard and mouse - won't work with a wireless keyboard or mouse. Cycle power and hold down COMMAND-S keys on reboot.  This will allow you basic access to your system and you can reomove or delete any application that you suspect is causing a problem.
If none of your applications work on the Mac, you can boot up from the gray repair disk (or boot up Disk Warrior or Tech Tools).   All of them will clean up the file systems and that is usually all you need to fix things. Insert the disk. cycle the power button (hold it for 11 seconds) and hold Command Key+C (for CD) on your keyboard while it boots back up.
The most common cause for persistient hangs is too little memory (RAM) or the harddisk is full.   The RAM problem can be minimized by not running other big applications.   If the harddisk is over 80% full, you will see significant slowing.  At 90-95% full, the system can barely run.   Run Disk Utitliy from the APPLICATIONS / UTLILITIES Folder, as The Hatter suggested (above).  Disk Repair is the option.
Note: If any recovery works with a wireless keyboard and mouse, I am not aware of that new functionality.   Also, any USB keyboard and mouse will work, even if it's from a PC.

  • How do you restart the computer from the installationn disk

    Hello,
After the disk doctor utility told me to
2010-09-19 08:36:49 -0700: Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD”: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
    2010-09-19 08:36:49 -0700:
I can't find anywhere that explains how to do this. Can you help me?
    Pat

    Hi patocsj,
    Welcome to the forum.
Just to explain further, one cannot 'Repair' a volume that one started up from. You need to start from a different volume.
So, to expand further on Murat's advice do the following:
    1. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.) Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
