How do I return an input stream from a text file

Suppose there's a class with methods..
one of the methods is something like..
public int value() and has a return statement at the end obviously for returning an int value..
Another method reads a text file and creates an input stream..
Scanner data  = new Scanner(new File(input.next()));
I want to return the data when I do a call to this method, but I'm not sure what the method heading would look like..

I've replicated the same code below; and put the number of the line where the error is.
+cannot find symbol variable read     [line 21]+
+cannot find symbol variable read     [line 23]+
+cannot find symbol variable read     [line 29]+
+cannot find symbol variable read     [line 31]+
+cannot find symbol variable inputStream     [line 44]+
+calculate() in textInput cannot be applied to (java.util.Scanner)     [line 57]+
the reason I have the _______ for the createInputStream() method is because I'm not really sure what the heading type should be to return the input stream.

    I know if we use UTL_FILE.get_line we can read the whole line...but i need to read the tab separated value separately.....If it's a text file then UTL_FILE will only allow you to read it a line at a time. It is then up to you to split that string up (search for split string on this forum for methods) into it's individual components.
    If the text file contains a standard structure on each line, i.e. it is a fixed delimited structure, then you could use external tables to read the data instead.

  • How can I read a specific character from a text file?

    Hi All!
    I would like to read a specific character from a text file, e.g. the 2012th character in a text file with 7034 characters.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks
    Johannes

    just use the skip(long) method of the input stream that reads the text file and skip over the desired number of bytes

  • How to remove noisy data points read from a text file

    Reading data measurements taken in from a txt file.  How do I get rid of noise aside from going into the text file and deciding point by point what to delete.

    Well going in point by point and deleting is certainly one way of going about it. Of course that would defeat the entire purpose of having this great programming enviroment that is capable of doing that kind of thing for us.
    Is your text file small enough to upload? Obviously you know what the criteria are for judging whether or not a data point is acceptable so it should be simple enough to program. Give us a bit more information and I can assure you there will be a race between LabVIEW experts to see who can post the cleanest, simplest, and fastest piece of code that will do what you need. My wager is on altenbach, but there are a few others here that are almost as impressive.

  • How can i read all the lines from a text file in specific places and use the data ?

    string[] lines = File.ReadAllLines(@"c:\wmiclasses\wmiclasses1.txt");
    for (int i = 0; i < lines.Length; i++)
    if (lines[i].StartsWith("ComboBox"))
    And this is how the text file content look like:
    ComboBox Name cmbxOption
    Classes Win32_1394Controller
    Classes Win32_1394ControllerDevice
    ComboBox Name cmbxStorage
    Classes Win32_LogicalFileSecuritySetting
    Classes Win32_TapeDrive
    What i need to do is some things:
    1. Each time the line start with ComboBox then to get only the ComboBox name from the line for example cmbxOption.
       Since i have already this ComboBoxes in my form1 designer i need to identify where the cmbxOption start and end and when the next ComboBox start cmbxStorage.
    2. To get all the lines of the current ComboBox for example this lines belong to cmbxOption:
    Classes Win32_1394Controller
    Classes Win32_1394ControllerDevice
    3. To create from each line a Key and Value for example from the line:
    Classes Win32_1394Controller
    Then the key will be Win32_1394Controller and the value will be only 1394Controller
    Then the second line key Win32_1394ControllerDevice and value only 1394ControllerDevice
    4. To add to the correct belonging ComboBox only the value 1394Controller.
    5. To make that when i select in the ComboBox for example in cmbxOption the item 1394Controller it will act like i selected Win32_1394Controller.
    For example in this event:
    private void cmbxOption_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e)
    InsertInfo(cmbxOption.SelectedItem.ToString(), ref lstDisplayHardware, chkHardware.Checked);
    In need that the SelectedItem will be Win32_1394Controller but the user will see in the cmbxOption only 1394Controller without the Win32_
    This is the start of the method InsertInfo
    private void InsertInfo(string Key, ref ListView lst, bool DontInsertNull)
    That's why i need that the Key will be Win32_1394Controller but i want that the user will see in the ComboBox only 1394Controller without the Win32_

  • How can I create a Document object from a text file (myFile.txt)

    Hi everybody:
    Thank you for reading this message.
    I am trying to find a method to convert a text file ( I have it in a File object) to a Document object.
    I read the Java API but it is strange, I do not know if I have to create an AbstractDocument, it is really strange for me.
    Any comment is welcome,
    Regards,
    JB

    Document is an interface, and AbstractDocument is abstract, so you
    can't create either of those directly. Assuming you are dealing with a
    a plain text file, you could do something like
    // Not catching any exceptions that get thrown
    File file = /* file you already have */
    String eol = System.getProperty( "line.separator" );
    int eolLen = eol.length();
    FileReader reader = new FileReader( file );
    BufferedReader buffer = new BufferedReader( reader );
    PlainDocument doc = new PlainDocument();
    for ( String line = buffer.readLine() ; line != null ; line = buffer.readLine() ) {
        int len = doc.getLength();
        if ( len > 0 ) {
            doc.insertString( len, eol, null );
            len += eolLen;
        doc.insertString( len, line, null );
    }and now you have a document.

  • Reading in an array from a text file

    I'm trying to use a text file to load in some configuratin
    data (using actionscript 3) I have it working ok for simple stuff
    like gamename=Chess&gamescore=100 , etc... but some of the data
    needs to be in an array. Can someone please point me in the right
    direction to how I can read in an array from a text file?
    Thanks!

    the easiest way is to create a string with the (soon-to-be)
    array elements separated by a delimiter (like a double comma). read
    in your string, then use the split() method of strings to split
    your string into an array.

  • How to get file input stream from the client machine by JSF Fileupload API?

    Dear Friends,
    How to get the file input stream from the client machine by JSF HtmlFileupload or fileupload API. At present, if i execute the file upload code in the client machine, it is able to get the local path of the file and looking for the file in server machine. So i am getting FileNotFoundException.
    E.g., If a file is located at client machine at following location means "C:\Test\Test.txt",
    uploadClass.getFileuploadComponent().getFilename().toString() returns "C:\Test\Test.txt". But it is looking for that file in server and throwing FileNotFoundException.
    Please post your replies soon.
    Thanks,
    JP

    Depends on which version of JSF you're using. If JSF 1.2, I wouldn't even bother trying to hack this into JSF itself unless you can use something like Seam 2 or richfaces.
    http://docs.jboss.org/richfaces/latest_3_3_X/en/devguide/html/rich_fileUpload.html
    http://docs.jboss.org/seam/2.2.1.CR3/reference/en-US/html/controls.html#d0e29259 (look for s:fileUpload)
    But if I were you, a simple non-jsf form with a servlet works best for taking file uploads.
    As for JSF 2.0, there are other ways of getting it done.

    I have tried looking for a way to change how this specific method accesses the internet (e.g: a Proxy parameter with URLConnection) but there doesn't seem to be any.
    Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Ah, that worked fine. I had thought of using that earlier but I was under the impression that the input stream would be HTML rather than an actual image. Not sure why.. Anyway, thanks very much for your help!
    Here is the new code with your suggested revisions and a URLConnection to get the input stream:

    import java.net.*;
    public class ImageSave
        public static void main(String args[])

                 // Use the InputStream flavor of ImageIO.read() instead.

  • How to input data into an arraylist from a text file?

    I am trying to take data from a text file and put that data into an arraylist. First here is the text file:

    3
    3065.1The text between the [ ] is the output from my arraylists. I have three arraylists. The first [ ] belongs to arraylist A, the second to arraylist B, and the third to arraylist C. The format of the arraylists is this:

  • How can I remove a Input device from my Mac?

    Hello, I would like to know how I can remove a input device from the Sound area in System Preferences. I installed Wiretap Anywhere a sound input program for my Mac and did not realize It was not supported for Moutain Lion. I put the application in the trash and then emptied the trash can. Now whenever I try to start GarageBand or a program like that it crashes my computer. In the Input tab of Sound (System Preferences) It is listed as Wiretap: System Audio.
    I would like to remove this from the Input tab so I can use my Mac reguarly. Any Ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Justin

    Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
    Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
    Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
    You may have to log out or reboot in order to complete an uninstallation.
    If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
    Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • Error while executing SSIS package - Error: 4014, Severity:20, State: 11. A fatal error occurred while reading the input stream from the network. The session will be terminated (input error: 109, output error: 0)

    Hi,
    We are getting the following error when running our SSIS packages on Microsoft SQL Server 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1:
    Error: 4014, Severity:20, State: 11.   A fatal error occurred while reading the input stream from the network. The session will be terminated (input error: 109, output error: 0)
    SQL Server Data Tools and SQL Server Database Engine reside on the same server.
    We tried the following:
    Disabling TCP Chimney Offload
    Installed Windows Server 2008 SP1
    Splitting our SSIS code into multiple steps so it is not all one large continuous operation
    The error occurs during a BulkDataLoad task.
    Other options we are investigating with the engineering team (out-sourced, so delayed responses):
    Firewall configurations (everything is local, so this should not make a difference)
    Disabling the anti-virus scanner
    Are there other things we can try?
    Any insight is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi HenryKwan,
    Based on the current information, the issue can be caused by many reasons. Please refer to the following tips:
    Install the latest hotfix based on your SQL Server version. Ps: there is no SQL Server 2012 R2 version.
    Change the MaxConcurrentExecutables property from -1 to another one based on the MAXDOP. For example, 8.
    Set "RetainSameConnection" Property to FALSE on the all the connection managers.
    Reference:

    If the issue is still existed, as Jakub suggested, please provide us more information about this issue.

  • How do you return back one record from a NamingEnumeration

    how do you return back one record from a For Loop issue
    Posted: Jan 4, 2007 9:13 AM Reply
    I have the following piece of code and i want to be able to just return one item...
    that is return e.next(); but this line doesnt work for below what is wrong
    if (attrs == null) {
    System.out.println("No attributes");
    } else {
    /* Print each attribute */
    for (NamingEnumeration ae = attrs.getAll();
    ae.hasMore();) {
    Attribute attr = (Attribute)ae.next();
    System.out.println("attribute: " + attr);
    /* print each value */
    for (NamingEnumeration e = attr.getAll();
    e.hasMore();){
    System.out.println("value:- " + e.next()));
    return e.next();
    }

    At the end of the loop, the NamingEnumeration has no more elements. You need to call getAll() again.
    By the way, please use code tags (above the posting box). You've been here long enough to know that (judging by your registration date).
