How does the viewcontroller class draw that cool "back" button?

When you use a view controller, as you get deeper, you see the "back" button on the screen. I don't use a top level view controller, but when I get to my second level down, i want to add a view controller, with the "back" enabled. I figured it might be easier just to create a toolbar of my own and put in a button just like there. Is there a predefined system button that has "back" inside it? anybody know where this kind of tapered button shape is really stored on the system? or how to get this shape programmatically? Weird that apple doesn't have a programmatic interface exposed for this button type, which they are using.

Ah, but when I am doing this manually, and since I don't have a previous view controller, I want to fake up this button because it has a nice shape; where is this button coming from? it is clearly built in but not in the list of "standard" buttons which is a very short list I might add. This icon is a PNG resource undoubtedly in some framework or somewhere, and where is it, or how can I get this button to come up programmatically it is not a simple oval.

  • How does the String class achieve this.

How come we can do the following with the String class:
// The class is initialized using the equals sign!
String s = "Hello, World"";I am currently checking the string class but can not find what makes the above possible. could anyone help me?

ok sorry for not being so clear :)
When having a String class, we can initialize it by doing the following:
String myString = "Hello World"; Whis as JosAH explained it is handeled by the compiler. However my common sense tells me that the String class is nothing but a normal class (not like int, long, etc). So if it a normal class, then in that class there is a way to understand what = "somthing" means, and update it's state accordingly.
I would like to do the same think with my class. example:
Person MyPerson = "John, Smith";The above is a stupid example, however it gathers my point. The String class sess what is inside the quates and updates it state (with the help of the compiler). Can the Person class do the same? how?

  • How does the jvm handle drawing images outside an applet window?

I have a question about an applet I want to optimize.
Essentially the applet allows the user to scroll through a large map while viewing only a small portion of the map through the applet window.
The map has a large array of circles with coordinates on the map that are drawn in their appropriate place in the applet window when the user scrolls the map.
As it stands, the paint method loops through every circle in the array to draw them, but most of them are not visible in the window and end up getting drawn in a negative coordinate or a very large coordinate.
My question is are these circles that are not seen in the applet window but are still calling drawCircle in the paint method putting a strain on the computer's graphics card?
Would it be better if I looped through all circles and only called the drawCircle method on circles whose coordinates would be visible? Or would the extra step of checking each circle's coordinates before drawing be not worth as efficient?
    Any help would be appreciated.

If the amount of stuff being rendered outside of the clip rectangle is small then it's usually not worth it to attempt to figure out what's being clipped and not draw it. If the clip rectangle represents only a small portion of the entire canvas that can be drawn, however, it's usually worthwhile to put in some logic to only draw what is necessary.
Take JTextArea, for example. It could be displaying a text document thousands of lines long. Instead of rendering every line of text on every repaint operation, it contains the following logic:
    1. Get the current clip bounds (i.e. what part of the text area is "dirty" and must be repainted).
    2. Figure out what lines are displayed in the clip bounds. Some lines may be only partially visible (a line "halfway" scrolled down), but they need to be repainted too. If word wrap is disabled this is a very quick and cheap operation, but if word wrap is enabled, it's a little more complex.
    3. Only repaint those lines.
This way, in the best-case scenario JTextArea only repaints a single line (the line the user is typing in). Worst case, it repaints the number of lines that can fit on the screen. But it never repaints too much.
Anyway, I guess my advice would be: If it's cheap and easy to determine if something is out of the clip bounds, do it. If it's difficult to determine, do it only if you have a noticeable performance issue in your rendering code.

  • How does the Class javax.security.auth.Subject work?

    Hi,
i don't understand how does the class Subject work.
First i will describe how do i understand u can use the class Subject
This is the way you can create a Subject(i think):
    1. create a LoginContext, where u can tell over its parameter which
    Module to use
    2. a LoginModule will be used
    3. now the LoginModule create a Subject
if this steps right--> ok, else--> please write how it really works
    Now the questions:
    1. Where do the LoginModule get the username and stuff like this from
    to fill the Subjects? Principals?
    2. Where will be the Subject save, at server or at client side?
when save on server: how to reference a Subject is belong to the
    right Client?
when save on client: how to ensure the client do not modify it?
    3. In the documentation of JavaTM 2 Platform Std. Ed. v1.4.1, there is
no advice, that the class have any FIELDS, but then where the
    principals are saved?
    4. The Class Subject do not have any methodes to modify the principals,
so how to modify it if necessary?
i think this is enough for the beginnig :)

    Hi
Let me try to answer. I am a bit confused too.
    Hi,
i don't understand how does the class Subject work.
First i will describe how do i understand u can use
    the class Subject
This is the way you can create a Subject(i think):
    1. create a LoginContext, where u can tell over its
    parameter which
    Module to use
    2. a LoginModule will be used
    3. now the LoginModule create a Subject
Correct.if this steps right--> ok, else--> please write how it
    really works
    Now the questions:
    1. Where do the LoginModule get the username and stuff
    like this from
    to fill the Subjects? Principals?
The Loginmodule does not need the user name. The username is
only relevant to your application not to JAAS. Consider a standaalone
application. Whoever starts the application, becomes the user.
After you start the application, and login (whatever way), your subject
is created. This subject pertains to the person who is executing the application, not the application specific userid/username. So the user id or name is not required. There is only one user, who is running the application. The JAAS architecture is more relevant for UNIX like
permission/grant structure, which determines who can execute what.
    >
    2. Where will be the Subject save, at server or at
    client side?
Again the Subject has nothing to do with your application specific userid. It will be there in the LoginContext. So in a sense a LoginContext is actually a user, not a Subject.
when save on server: how to reference a Subject is
    is belong to the
    right Client?
when save on client: how to ensure the client do
    do not modify it?
In a client server mode, usually the login is done twice. You have to find a way to communicate the subject to the server.3. In the documentation of JavaTM 2 Platform Std. Ed.
    v1.4.1, there is
no advice, that the class have any FIELDS, but then
    en where the
    principals are saved?
    4. The Class Subject do not have any methodes to
    modify the principals,
so how to modify it if necessary?
I think you can add Principals. That is definitely there.i think this is enough for the beginnig :)
    thanx,
    edo
Hope this helps. As of now I do not think JAAS provides a very good architecture for authorization.
    cheers

  • How does the backup file that I would like to use for restore now require a password

How does the backup file that I would like to use for restore now require a password, when I just Backed it up on 10/30/14

It requires a password to restore from it because at some point, you checked the box in iTunes to use encrypted backups, at which point you were prompted for, and set a password.
If you now can't remember what that was, then you can not restore from that backup.

  • How does the Java card simulator work? and other misc questions

First, I have a class inherited from Applet. Okay, I did that.
How do I convert this class to a CAP file? I mean I have a class file which is compiled by javac, do I use this file to convert into a CAP file? What is an AID? Do I make up this AID?
In this .scr file (APDU Script), I understand the first 4 bytes, it means to create an Applet, but what about the rest? I know there are some intermixes of lengths and AIDs, I just can't decipher this.
    // create wallet applet

And here comes the main question?
How does the simulator work? How do I generate the data that mimics what the card reader reads?

  • How does the SecurityManager authorize with JAAS?

    Hello,
I'm using java 1.3 and JAAS, trying to write my own Permission for authorization. How does the SecurityManager know to authorize a method for a Subject? Does the method that I want protected have to explicitly call checkPermission()?
The examples given are always for FilePermission. They show a program calling Subject.doAs() to perform an action as a particular Subject, and they imply that checkPermission() is called by the methods doing the file access.
    Thanks

    I think you
    a) create a specific permission class (such as a "canDoThisPermission(String targetMethod)" class)
    b) in your method check that the permission is granted by calling
    checkPermission(new CanDoThisPermission(<methname>))
be sure your new permission class is being loaded from a trusted location (...lib/ext/... for eg.)

  • How does the Lock interface lock objects without synchronization?

    Hello!
I am reading about the Lock interface (java.util.concurrent.locks.Lock). I have checked the source code of it but I cannot understand how the Lock interface can lock an object by using Lock.lock(). I cannot see any synchronizations in ReentrantLock or its dependency classes.
So how does the locking really works when using Lock interface?

So how does the locking really works when using Lock interface?Either it does use Java's language-level synchronization, or it uses native methods that use platform-specific native atomicity features. Or both. Those are the only possibilities.

To add to sig's reply, "calibrating" does not calibrate Lithiu-Ion batteries, it calibrates the charge reporting circuitry.  If you look at the effect of deep discharging Lithium-Ion batteries in the data from the independent test group, Battery University, you will see that doing so shortens the life of the battery significantly. It looks like an optimum balance between use and life is at a discharge level of 50%.

  • How does the remote object connect to the correct host

i have had a small doubt on how the remote reference manages to find the correct host to call the subsequent methods after a sucessful lookup.
given a rebind or bind to the registry, the registry only stores the alias and the remote reference, now imagine a client calling a lookup on the registry would only get the remote reference, and not in which machine the remote object is found.
what i wanted to know is how does the client or atleast the remote reference returned by the registry correctly connects to the machine where the remote object is located. i dont think its stored in the stub bcos the stub is a complie time stuff.
i would be pleased to have a comprehensive answer for this.

The membership in the group communication framework is always accurate and upto date.Up to date to the moment when you check. Not up to date to the moment when you make the RMI call.
i could basically chk if this ip is available in the membership list.Complete waste of time. It doesn't matter what you check ahead of time, you are still trying to predict the future.
And you still have to deal with ConnectException etc from the actual remote method call. And the way you will deal with that in your situation is exactly the same as what you were going to do if your ahead-of-time check failed.
So just catch the exception(s) and deal with the problem there.

  • How does the Mac App Store work?!

Hey guys i recently posted this quesiton in a different area of the community but instead of being helped was just ridiculed for posting in the wrong place... +1 for helpfulness guys :/ lol Anyways... ive been told to ask in the development section.. I have a $9.99 app and it was sitting at 10th place in the top grossing apps a few weeks ago on the UK app store, now I noticed in the morning that it was ahead of an app which was 49.99 so i presumed that I must have sold at least 5 or 6 to be ahead of him (my idea of top grossing is quantity x price) but when itunesconnect released their reports in the afternoon it turned out that i'd only sold 1 copy.. so what im asking is basically how does the top grossing section work? and how regularly does it update? is it live? daily? etc
    Thanks in advance!

Your rank is better than the other app because you've made a sale while they've made none. When you make a sale, you jump in the charts, and after that you slowly go down if you don't make another sale. In other words, the bottom of the charts has many apps that didn't make any sale recently. I've also noticed that if you make some sales in other countries than the current chart, that'll very slightly improve your rank.

  • How does the Touch screen look in direct / indirect sunlight?

Was sitting on the LIRR heading home when I had this thought... after watching some guy playing with his PSP, as the sun was falling on his screen.... hhmmmm, I wondered how my Touch, which is now enroute from Anchorage, is going to handle the sunlight hitting it? Will I be able to watch my movies/tv shows without problem? How does the Touches screen look when sunlight hits it. I realize that sunlight hitting the screen is not an optimal viewing situation, but couldn't help but think how it would look. Those that are lucky to have one.... how does it handle sunlight?

readable, but not great. I had it out in bright Ozzie sunshine and I could use it, but I wouldn't watch a movie on it.

  • How does the iMac DC 1.83 compare...

How does the iMac DC 1.83 compare to the iMac G5 2.1?
    In real world speed.
In real world features. ie: video frame rate, etc...
Any REAL hardware problems pop up yet.
    Things like that.
I an most likely to get one soon, and would like to know.
    Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I hope that others reply also so we can see how this new computer is next to the two G5 versions it is replacing in a real world way.
I am happy that the DC 1.83 is no sloth when going toe to toe with the G5 version.
Did you port over your software from the older system, and run the programs to see how things ran, or freash install them all?
    Again, thanks

  • How does the original iPad mini perform on iOS 8?

I have been thinking about getting a new iPad from the iPad 2. I know the original iPad mini and the iPad 2 have similar specs, but the real upgrade I get from it is the wireless technology and the ability to use Handoff. Overall, how does the original iPad mini handle iOS 8? Should I go with that iPad or get the iPad mini 2? I wouldn't get the iPad mini 3 because I don't think Touch ID is necessary for what I want to do on an iPad.
Overall, I am wondering how iOS 8 performs on the original iPad mini so it can help me choose between the original or the iPad mini 2. Thanks in advance for your input!

Get the mini 2 when the prices come down. The mini 2 is baically a smaller iPad Air. The improvements over the mini are well worth the money.
