How is importance of PL/SQL today?

Hi,
I want to begin a commercial training that teaches me how to program an Oracle database in PL/SQL.
This training lasts 12 months, and before I start it, I want to know what is the importance of PL/SQL today?
Is PL/SQL still a modern programming language that is up do date and generally used?
Or are ther other alternatives on the market that play a bigger role today? I think here about Java and other progamming languages.
And besides, are there other technologies I should learn, if I am going to become a database programmer?
My experience today is installing and administering databases since 10 years, and I want now to become a PL/SQL programmer.
Can someone tell me how are job opportunities on the market?

It all depends.
First of all, PL/SQL is not going to disappear ever, simply because more and more functionality of Oracle relies on PL/SQL. Take the expdp command: Basically this is a commandline interface to the datapump API.
There are more facilities in the database like that.
If you work in an Oracle centric shop, which only uses Oracle products, you are going to use PL/SQL. PL/SQL is a compiled language which runs in the database, it will always have more features. and run faster than Java.
Now, there is the plethora of database-neutral application vendors out there. In this situation Oracle only functions as a 'datastore', so basically those applications do not use any Oracle feature at all, and are written in Java.
Even worse: everything is cached in the application server, and declarative integrity is not enforced in the database.
That software usually doesn't use PL/SQL at all.
Invariably there are major performance problems, and all over the globe there are frustrated Oracle administrators because they can't address the performance problems, as vendor refuses to cooperate.
In my country, The Netherlands, there seem to be few Oracle centric shops, and everyone is running database-neutral apps, or I don't know the Oracle centric shops.
In these situations knowledge of Java can come in handy, and likely you won't use PL/SQL.

Are you sure you want to use XML with tables for this? No doubt importing XML into tables is useful for some specialized tasks, such as importing formatting information inside the XML itself, but for most of the familiar tasks that XML excels at, tables are neither necessary nor useful.
In my (limited) experience, if the XML elements are well-differentiated, by which I mean different types of data have their own distinctive tags, then the special powers of XML can be exploited more fully using the more familiar tagged text, nested tags etc. in ordinary text frames using paragraph breaks, tab characters, etc. to achieve a suitably "tabular" finished appearance.
If you must import XML into tables, I recommend Adobe's own PDF "Adobe InDesign CS3 and XML: A Technical Reference" availabe here:

It sounds very daunting -- the words "technical reference" make me shudder -- but actually it's very readable and not very technical at all. Some nice pics and everything!

Hi,
Have you tried : Tools - Database Unload.
There are several types of objects which you can choose - package and package bodies.
I usually put them into a single file. I haven't tried to do so into multiple files.
If you need to get them into different files, use the Unload feature from the Connection - Package - right click and choose Unload. But you need to do this one by one for each package.
Btw, it is not Import. The correct term for what you want is to Export, here in SQL Dev refers to Unload.
Import is used when you want to put something from outside source into the Database.

Install the XDK 10g. Add <XDK>/lib/xsu12.jar to the CLASSPATH variable. Also add <XDK>/lib/xmlparserv2.jar and <XDK>/lib/xdb.jar to Classpath. For establishing a JDBC connection with Oracle database, JDBC drivers are required; add <Oracle10g>/jdbc/lib/ojdbc14.jar to Classpath. Also add <Oracle10g>/LIB/servlet.jar and <Oracle10g>/jdbc/lib/classes12dms.jar to CLASSPATH. <XDK> is the directory in which XDK 10g Production is installed. <Oracle10g> is the directory in which Oracle Database 10g is installed.

How to import data from CSV file with columns separated by semicolon?

I migrate database from MS SQL 2008 to ORACLE 11g
I export data to CSV file from MS SQL
then I try to import it to Oracle
several tables goes fine using Import data option in the SQL Developer
Standard CSV files with data separated by comma were imported.
chars, date (with format string), and integer data are imported via import wizard without problems
the problems were when I try to import table with noninteger numbers with modal part separated by comma not by dot
comma is the standard separator for columns in CSV file
so I must change the standard separator to semicolon
then the import wizard have problem to correct recognize the columns data because it use only standard CSV comma separator :-/
In SQL Developer 1.5.3 Tools -> Preferences -> Migration -> Data Move Options
I change "End of Column Delimiter" to ; but it doens't work
Is this possible to change the standard column separator for import data wizzard in SQL Developer 1.5.3?

You do not.
.dmp files are created from our Export and Data Pump database utilities and are proprietary files. You use the corresponding Import (or Data Pump) utility to import the data.

Hi did you already exported data from SQL SERVER? if not using SQL*LOADER you cannot export data. SQL*LOADER is only mean for importing data from flat files(usually text files) into ORACLE tables.
for importing data into oracle tables using sql*loader use below steps
1) create a sql*loader control file.
it looks like as follows
LOAD DATA
INFILE 'sample.dat'
BADFILE 'sample.bad'
DISCARDFILE 'sample.dsc'
APPEND
INTO TABLE emp
TRAILING NULLCOLS
or for sample script of control file search google.
2) at command prompt issue following
$ sqlldr test/test
enter control file=<give control file name which you create earlier>
debug any errors (if occured)

So after analysing this log file, i created
the appropriate drives and folders... as the
import statement doesn't see them.
E:\ORADATA G:\ORDATA etc...
And i started to [b]IMPORT ONE MORE TIME. with:

How to import your MS Active Directory users in an Oracle table

I first tried to get a Heterogenous Connection to my MS Active Directory to get information on my Active Directory users.
This doesn't work so I used an alternative solution:
How to import your MS Active Directory users in an Oracle table
- a Visual Basic script for export from Active Directory
- a table in my database
- a SQL*Loader Control-file
- a command-file to start the SQL*Loader
Now I can schedule the vsb-script and the command-file to get my information in an Oracle table. This works fine for me.

I have a table with about 50,000 records in my Oracle database and there is a date column which shows the date that each record get inserted to the table, for example 04-Aug-13.
Is there any way that I can find out what time each record has been inserted?
For example: 04-Aug-13 4:20:00 PM. (For my existing records not future ones)
First you need to clarify what you mean by 'the date that each record get inserted'. A row is not permanent and visible to other sessions until it has been COMMITTED and that commit may happen seconds, minutes, hours or even days AFTER a user actually creates the row and puts a date in your 'date column'.
Second - your date column, and ALL date columns, includes a time component. So just query your date column for the time.
The only way that time value will be incorrect is if you did something silly like TRUNC(myDate) when you inserted the value. That would use a time component of 00:00:00 and destroy the actual time.

file. the problem is how to import selected data from the corel file
into the oracle or any other database. Kindly guide me how to do this.

This can be automated... Most Windows applications support (or did support) DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange). In its basic form, you can send DDE commands to an application. E.g. load file using this filename, use the selection option on the menu, save the selection as a text file, etc.
In other words, you can interact with an application using DDE only - no keyboard or mouse input required.
DDE itself is fairly straightforward and not that difficult to code - the complexity is in the DDE payloads that need to be send to the application to make it behave the way you want it to. In the "old" days, this was documented in some fashion by applications. I cannot recall seeing any specific DDE commands and specs for common Window applications for many years now. Also, DDE was made part of the then new OLE2 spec and have since taken a backseat.
Not even sure if apps today still properly support it...
So instead of putting Corel data into Oracle, I would rather look at it the other way. After all, Oracle is the server - not Corel. Have a web front-end (written in APEX) that allows you to specify the participant's details and store this in Oracle.
Create an export filter in Oracle that dumps this into a XML (or similar) format understood by Corel. Having Corel open this file, convert it, and print it. Then look at how to automated these steps in Corel (using VB for Apps or something).
