How Powerful of a machine do I need?

I am a beginner software developer. I am looking to buy a used powerMac off eBay. How powerful of a machine do I need to run Leopard and XCode Developer Tools? I also might run iWeb, and maybe iMovie and iDVD.
NOTE:
I said a powerMac, but I may also go with a used eMac, or if I can find one, a very inexpensive Mac Mini.
Also, once I buy the powerMac, will it be expensive (more than $75) to upgrade the processor? Can I use a G5 processor in a G4 mac? One last question, can I use any DDR Ram and any IDE HD in it?

Are these the right questions to be asking? Should one look farther ahead? My wife's G3 iBook ran 10.4.0 very rapidly. It's now crawling along on 10.4.11. You'll need to upgrade 10.5, or even boot from different releases on DVDs. What you really want is a machine with the minimal requirements for 10.6. Nevertheless:-
These computers Apple claims are minimally suitable are six or seven years old: the minimal specs for 10.5 specifies 867 MHz, and the default Nvidia GeForce MX video card (I'm told) will run Tiger more like a snail.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25232
which came from
http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/
and MacTracker.
Though your resolution isn't quoted for it, your number of columns are divisible by 8. Consequently, SwitchResX may allow you to create a custom, workable resolution for at least the Nvidia GeForce 6200 AGP card, which I believe is optimized for Apple's 2D & 3D software.
http://www.switchres.info/html/SRX/FAQ.html
At one point, around 2001 or 2002, the Apple keyboard with a power switch on it was replaced by USB keyboard & mouse. USB & Firewire 400 Mbps became 800 Mbps. The old Apple video port was replaced by VGA and DMI. More importantly, memory modules could be of mixed size, hard disks could be of mixed speed, and hard disks could be doubled in speed with striped RAID.
Later, the unacceptable Airport card was replaced by acceptable Airport Extreme. Bluetooth was added. If you don't want to upgrade these latter items by PCI card, check the specs. (Some PCI WiFi cards with antennae come with Bluetooth.)
You can upgrade memory, hard disks, and optical drive cheaply; but the others could nickel-and-dime you to death, if you really need them immediately. In my case, they can wait. (Mine has four USB 2.0 sockets on a PCI card.)
Processors are expensive, so you may want a computer that will just work, won't burn up, and is flexible enough to be slowly upgraded. MacOSX can compile very slowly, I sure, for the kernel uses messages rather than semaphores, so race conditions (crashes from being weighted down) don't occur. You may want a Power Mac with the above features. Here's a minimal machine on eBay (which has an L3 cache, I think), being sold very cheaply by a very reliable dealer:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-PowerMac-Quicksilver-G4-867mhz-60-512-CDRW-Zip_W0QQite mZ300218642150QQihZ020QQcategoryZ111418QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
It's faster than my 800MHz. Mine had the video card replaced by the popular Nvidia GeForce 6200 (for the 5200 seemed buggy, I believe) for $50, less on eBay.
http://www.amazon.com/Nvidia-Geforce-Profile-Support-support/dp/tech-data/B000H0 0JO0/ref=deasmtd/105-0812408-5623635
Mine came with 256 MB video memory which it shares with the CPU's real memory, I believe. This, on my machine, has 2 of the 3 slots filled with 256 Mb modules; and a $20 eBay 512 module would bring it to at least 1 Gb. Mac OSX 1.5 relies heavily on virtual memory; if RAID will support virtual memory, I can buy a duplicate of my 60 GB disk for $20 and create an array that appears to rotate at 14 400 rpm. Disk space isn't a great problem, for mine came with a new, $40 Pioneer DL super- multi- optical disc writer.
Optical discs are where my data, such as iMovies & iPhotos, lie. (Ah, little pun there.) Also large applications, such as large or related applications are principally stored on LightScribe optical discs:
Free optical disc of Unix security applications
http://s-t-d.org/index.html
Free MacOSX applications run from optical media
http://www.freesmug.org/portableapps/
CinePaint for MacOSX
http://www.cinepaint.org/
If you're not writing a new operating system or office suite, and can afford the time for your frequent compiles, and need dual monitors (for testing your application on one, programming it and compiling it on another), an initially inexpensive Quicksilver has at least two fans and may have the features that will allow you to improve it with time.
My only suggestion is to research everything carefully. I hope some who have tried 10.5 on a minimal machine will respond.
Best of luck.

My time machine says it need more room to complete back up, how do i make more room?

    Delete the old backups..
There is a reason though for this to happen. Tell us what model Time Capsule you are using and what size disk it has .. how much free space is available and how much is now required. If you upgraded to Mavericks it probably needs to do a whole new  backup and simply doesn't have the space .. nor can it delete the old backup.
Please read Pondini FAQ for details of these issues.. deleting backups for example Q12

  • How to stop Time Machine from backing up Temp Files?

    Hi folks!
I am trying to find out how to stop Time Machine from constantly backing up 'useless' temporary files accumulated from web browsing? Although I don't change or add large files to my HD, Time Machine backs up hundreds of MBs every hour. Those file amounts make sense when I consider that I browse a lot to YouTube, SoundCloud, etc to watch videos or listen to music - I just don't want them to be backed up.
Under Time Machine Options I already excluded the following items from backups:
    ~/Library/Caches
    /Library/Caches
    ~/Downloads
But even though I did this weeks ago, Time Machine stills finds large files to be backed up every hour and my only guess is that I am still missing a location where either Safari or Firefox - the two web browsers I use - store temporary files.
    Can you help?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Are you sure you need that? There are no viruses that run on OSX. None. Zip. Zero.
If you're running Windoze on your Mac, that's the same as running it on a PC, so it needs all the same anti-everything stuff you'd use on a PC.
There is some "malware," such as Trojans, for Macs, though. But (unlike viruses that can get onto your system without your knowledge), you must approve their installation (via your Admin password) and/or operation (via the "This application was downloaded from the internet ..." prompt).
Appropriately enough, some of these Trojans are included in pirated versions of Apple software, such as iWork!
For the gory details, see Thomas Reed's [Mac Virus Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/macvirus].
    Thanks a lot again!
You're quite welcome, and thanks for posting back.

  • How to Convert OVM machines to VM Esx (.ova, .ovf) Format

    Hi,
Could you pls help me on following issues?
    1. How to Convert OVM machines to VM Esx (.OVA or .OVF) Format
    2. How to take backup or copy VM from Oracle VM for Converting other formats.
    3. Are we need to use the same version of Manager and Server? Manager Version= Server Version OR  Manager Version < Server Version OR Manager Version > Server version.
I am using manager 3.2.2 and server 3.2.1 Is it OK?
    Thank You,
    Regards,
    Prakash T

Questions: Could you pls help me on following issues?
    1. How to Convert OVM machines to VM Esx (.OVA or .OVF) Format
Answer: The only way I have done this is to import the the Oracle VM into VMware ESX with VMware P2V conversion. The one key thing you have to make sure of here is that if it is a Linux Virtual machine that you are moving to VMware you must start the Virtual Machine in a standard no Xen kernel before you do the P2V conversion as VMware will choke on the any Xen kernel.
Now if you want to go from VMware to OVM follow the instructions on this link: Re: Import VMWare VirtualMachine into OVM 3.2.2.520
    2. How to take backup or copy VM from Oracle VM for Converting other formats.
Answer: Read this white paper for Guidence on Oracle VM Backup's.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/ovm3-backup-recovery-1997244.pdf
    3. Are we need to use the same version of Manager and Server? Manager Version= Server Version OR  Manager Version < Server Version OR Manager Version > Server version. I am using manager 3.2.2 and server 3.2.1 Is it OK?
Answer: I would strongly recommend that you keep the Manager and Servers on the same version.
I know for doing upgrades the Manager should be upgraded first and then the servers can be upgraded.  See section 5.1 in the upgrade document.  http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35328_01/E35330/E35330.pdf
    Hope this helps. Russell

    Hello ,
I want to ask some question about ipads \
    How powerful is the iPad?
How useful is it for reading books, newspaper or magazines or for surfing the web?
Can you identify any shortcomings of the device?
    please help me

it's less powerful than your average computer. THink of it like a netbook but with a better processor.
It'll do fine for surfing (although if you browse a lot of flash based sites you will need to get a third party browser since safari doesn't accommodate it)
You may do OK on reading books, papers or magazines, especially if they have apps, but the ipad's screen is backlit, so it doesn't work well outdoors and you may need to fiddle with the brightness so that you don't get eye strain (it's just like doing too much reading from a computer screen)
I would say the biggest short comings are data transfer. Apple's preferred work flow is that everything is done via iTunes or the internet....well people dont' always have 100% reliable always on internet access so you can find yourself in a situation where you can't get things on/off the iPad.
By and large, it's a good device for day to day stuff, but is not a computer replacement.

I have the old machine backed up onto an external firewire disk but can't hook that up to the new imac as I'm waiting for delivery of a firewire 400/800 adaptor - therefore starting the old machine up as a slave is also subject to the same delay.
I was hoping there might be some way to create a network between the 2 machines (and 2 different versions of the OS) to be able to transfer data across immediately but perhaps I'll just have to wait for my firewire adaptor to arrive.
I don't understand why you're buying a Firewire adaptor, since AFAIK both of your computers have Firewire already built in.
All you need is a firewire cable. Connect the Firewire socket on the old machine to the Firewire socket on your new iMac.
Then start the old machine in Target Mode (i.e. by holding down the T key on its keyboard, while it's starting up, until you see the three-legged T icon hopping around the screen of the old machine.)
At that point you will also see a new icon on the screen of your new iMac. This is the hard drive of your old machine.  By clicking on it you can navigate through it any way you like, just as you would normally.
Just drag across whatever you want from the old computer to the new one. This will leave everything on the old computer untouched.
    - or use Migration Assistant but in my experience, Migration Assistant isn't very reliable and fails to migrate large amounts of stuff.

  • How does the time machine work

how does the time machine work....I need to find an older version of a document...

    Hi mogburn,
Time Machine is part of the System software, not a feature of the word processing and page layout application, Pages, the topic in this community.
That said, Time Machine is pretty easy to get into.
In the Finder, open the folder containing the current version of the file.
Select the file, then click on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and choose Enter Time machine.
The folder window will move to the center of the screen, and two arrows will appear near the lower right corner of the window.
Click the one pointing back to go back in time, and the one pointing toward the front (of the computer) to return to the present. The display will stop at each saved version of the file along the way.
Need more details? Try asking in the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard community.

I recently had to get a new computer. It required me going from windows xp to 7 I am trying to put it one the new computer but I get following message  Windows installer could not be accessed could be in safe mode. How do I get around it? need it to charge my ipod on my computer.

I have used PCs for years, and still do at work.  But, last year my wife bought me a 15" MBP with the anti-glare screen (I was getting ready to buy for myself).  It took me all of 1 week to completely get used to the UI for OS-X, and now I really prefer it over the Win7 UI.  I have no experience with Win8.  Here are my thoughts:
    1) You can get a good computer using either a Win8 machine or a Mac.
    2) You will pay less for an equivalent PC.  But not as much less as some would have you believe.  You need to take into account the all aluminum body of the Mac (vs most PCs being plastic) and the size of the display.  And, don't forget that there is a lot of bundled SW on the Mac that you will actually find useful and would have to purchase for the PC.
    3) You can probably do everything you need on the PC platform with the right SW (you probably already know this since you are using one already).
That said, I think some things are easier on the Mac.  For example, GarageBand is a standard part of the Mac SW installation.  I got up and running recording directly from my bass into a track with a song imported from iTunes on another track in a snap.  I only had to purchase a Jam adapter ($99) for the bass so I could come in over USB instead of using the audio in port (which did work, by the way).  You can do the same on a PC, but you have to purchase the SW from somewhere.  And, it probably isn't cheap.
I use VMware Fusion to run those Win programs I already owned because it was much less expensive to buy Fusion than to replace them.
I would not return to a PC for my own use, given a choice.  But, I would be very careful about getting my wife a Mac without careful thought as she is not as tolerant of learning new things as I am.
    So, there you go.

  • Time Machine hard drive need to be reformatted?

I upgraded from Leopard about 6 hours ago and so far I haven't had any issues with Snow Leopard and it is noticeably faster and more stable. However, when I just plugged in my Time Machine backup drive I got a message saying the "disk was unreadable by this computer". That never happened until I installed Snow Leopard. Does my time machine backup HDD need to be reformatted to work with Snow Leopard??? Is there a chance that version 10.6.1 will fix this little issue soon?

If you're sure you've got all your data on your Mac now, and it's solid, you could erase your external drive and do a backup right off.
I also would search as I thought I saw someone with a simple fix for a similar issue here.

    Hi,
<i>How to know which master data objects need to activated from delivery version to active version in R/3 for a particular standard cube like 0SD_C03.</i>
I think, you are looking for master data sources(text, attributes, hier).Am i right?
If so, This cube has almost all SD master data characterstics. So you can activate all the all master data datasources of SD in r/3 (SD-IO).
Any way you requirement does not stop only by using this cube . You will activate all other cubes in SD also. So if you want to activate only needed master data datasources when you are activating a cube, the job becomes senseless. There is no problem(wrong) in activating all master data available under that application , even though you want to activate only one cube.
