How should I upgrade hard drive with bootcamp partition & Parallels too

I need to replace the hard drive in my 24" iMac (model 8,1 - early 2008). My major concern is how to deal with my Windows XP in Parallels using a Bootcamp partition. I have yet to find software that runs in OSX 7 (Lion) that will clone both the OSX partition and the Bootcamp NTFS partition. It would appear that the most practical approach would be to use bootcamp assistant to remove the NTSF bootcamp partition and then clone just the OSX partition to my new drive and then recreate the bootcamp and parallels installations and reinstall Windows XP from scratch. Seems rather inelegant, so I'm hoping someone has advice based on experience. I'm truly hoping there is a more elegant way and any suggestions are appreciated.

Kinda sticky, but there is a way. You'll need three separate tools for the job:
The External Hard Disk: Indispensable. Get one that's at least 2x bigger than your current internal drive. You'll need it as an interim storage point
Winclone: This free software will allow you to image the Boot Camp volume. Since the developers closed shop, it's off to MacUpdate for a copy. Run it and clone the data to the external drive
Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.3: Same as above, but for your OS X volume. This essentially puts a slick front-end on Disk Utility's cloning powers, but it really works well. Get it at http://www.bombich.com/
As for restoring the volumes:
Restore the Mac side first from Snow Leopard, using the created image from CCC. Let it take up the full of the new drive
Now, run Boot Camp Assistant to size up a new Windows volume. You should not need to reload Windows--that's where Winclone comes in.
Use Winclone to recover the XP side now, and if necessary, resize the volume.
If done correctly, you'll keep XP as you update to Lion on the Mac side--but you can't upgrade the drivers past 3.2.

On my MacBook i've got a Lion partition and a Bootcamp partition with the Windows 8 Consumer preview. Would it be possible to copy the partitions from my current drive to a bigger drive and extend each the partitions to make use of the extra space? I would rather not have to reinstall both Lion and Windows as I've got all the apps and settings i like on Lion and getting an OpenGL graphics driver to work (so i could play Minecraft) and installing VB6 was a huge hassle.

You can clone both the Mac and the Boot Camp Partitions separately to external drives then back clone to the new drive after installation. Be sure to clone the Mac Partition with Carbon Copy Cloner which can copy the lion recovery partition also. After having the clone of the Mac installed then set up anew Boot Camp partition but don't install any Windows OS. Clone the original Boot Camp partition with Winclone or Paragon HDM 12 themn back clone this to the newly creaed BootCamp partition.

On windows load the airport utility .. latest correct version as possible.. there is no windows 8 but win7 works after a fashion.
Make sure the TC is using SMB compatible names.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Type the name directly into windows explorer.
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
If no luck turn off all the firewalls.. internal windows plus security software plus whatever other gargyoles and other rubbish AV software you have running.
Ensure windows is able to at least ping the TC by IP address and name..
Use the utility in windows to set file sharing to guest account on with full read and write access.. and set workgroup to WORKGROUP.

Installing Lion clean on hard drive with multiple partitions

I have a spring 2008 24" iMac running Snow Leopard.
I am about to put a new 2TB hard drive in it and after I do that I want to do a clean install of Lion on it.
I do not want to upgrade my Snow Leopard install to Lion. I will keep it on my back up drive as a fallback incase of serious workflow incompatiblities with the new OS.
For my workflow I create and use multiple partitions (Mac OS, Windows and multiple HFS+ for data) on my hard drive and I have seen that Lion creates it's own hidden recovery partition as well for the recovery functionality.
My questions are:
1) Will I have issues running Lion on a partition on a hard drive with multiple partitions that have different file systems?
2) If I install Lion into one of these partitions will it create it's recovery partition within the space of the partition it is being installed into?
3) I will be creating a clean install by downloading Lion using the App Store and then burning an installer DVD using instructions I found elsewhere and then using that to do the install on the new drive. Is that the best route to take?
All my current data I will have on a backup external hard drive and after I complete the Lion install on the new larger drive I will manually reinstall all my software and move my data back from my backup drive to the new drive one partition at a time except of course for OS partition. I keep all my real user data outside of that partition anyway.

You will most likely run into the error message that "Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk" if you have multiple partitions set up, especially if they were not set up using Bootcamp and/or have serveral different file systems.
You can confirm that the Recovery Partition will not be installed by checking Disk Utility for your current partition map scheme.
This is most definitely not the end of the world as it is quite easy to create an external Recovery disk.
1) No, you shouldn't have issues running Lion, but Recovery HD will not be created.
2) No, and in your case it doesn't sound like it will be installed on your internal drive at all.
3) Yes. If you begin with an empty partition, then install Lion that would be considered a clean install.

How can I upgardge hard drive with mac osx 10.8

Looking to upgrade the hard drive on our 2009 iMac. What do I need to in Time Machine and or Mountain Lion to swap out drives?

I've used both IcyDock and G-Drive enclosures.
The prices vary quite a bit and you get what you pay for.
I don't know what type of ports you have on that iMac, but if you have Firewire 800, you might consider paying the extra bit for an enclosure that supports that. Much faster transfer rate.
The other thing to look for, and it might be a little difficult to dig out, is you need an enclosure that can support the 3 TB drive. The newer ones will likely support that big a drive, but the older ones (likely being sold at a discount) may not.
From what I have read (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/imac-aluminum-faq/imac-intel-21.5-inc h-27-inch-aluminum-how-to-upgrade-hard-drive.html), the drive is a 3.5" drive, so the link Clinton posted won't work.
And, according to that article, the drive is somewhat special in that you can't just buy any hard drive. Make sure you find a Hard drive specifically designed for that iMac.
Also, based on that article I posted, you may need to do some more research on what exactly Apple does to the drive for the iMac, as it may not work in any enclosure.

IMac G5 10.3 Upgrade to 10.5 How to erase the hard drive with no 10.3 disc

Working on my brother's computer. iMac G5 (no iSight) was running 10.3.11. He tried to do an upgrade to 10.4 along with a RAM upgrade. When he totally hosed it up, he turned it over to me and now wants to upgrade to 10.5. I obtained a retail version of 10.5 and was able to install it but I can't configure it because the old 10.3 Sys Admin is still in there somewhere. Brother has lost password and lost 10.3 start up disc. Can I just wipe the entire hard drive (most info is corrupted anyway) and start over clean with 10.5? If so, how do I accomplish that without the old install disc? Thanks for any help! I'm fairly desperate and pretty sick of tangling with this problem.

Richard, thank you so much for your advice. I will try that first thing tomorrow morning when I'm "fresh". I think the hard drive is fine. I already ran the verify and repair routine. My brother thought he could do all of this himself. I told him to install his upgrade first, then his hardware (RAM stick). Well, he installed the RAM first. Then assumed that something was wrong with the Software when it wouldn't load. Very long story short, one of the 1GB RAM chips was bad. As soon as I took it out, everything was fine. But he did something Very Bad while trying to do the upgrade and I just can't recreate what he did, not to mention how many other people were involved before he called me (and I'm far from an expert!). The Genius Bar at my local Apple store recommended erasing and starting over with the 10.5, but then everything I read on line said I had to have the 10.3 install disc. I bought a MAC when I retired from corporate America so I wouldn't have to do this type of thing any more. My MAC never gives me one bit of trouble. How to Replace existing Hard Drive with new Hard Drive, while keeping old files

I have recently replaced my hard drive on my Macbook Pro, with a new hard drive. The old Hard Drive was 160 GB, while the new one is 320 GB.
What I did before replacing it was clone my hard drive using "SuperDuper". I cloned it to the new hard drive and then simply removed my old hard drive and installed the new one with the clone on it. Then I booted it up and began running it. In fact I am using it right now.
My questions are:
Is this a good practice?
Will this work, without problems, indefinitely?
Is this the prescribed way to upgrade ones laptop hard drive?
The reason I did it this way was because I upgraded to Mountain Lion via the apple store download and I do not have the CD for the OS. So I figured if I could make a bootable copy, that might work. So far everything seems fine, but I really just want to know if this will last for a long time. I plan on also making a partition with Windows on it also, so I was wondering if anyone can comment on that too.
If anyone can comment or give any advice on this topic I would really appreciate it.

Every thing is fine except Super Duper does not clone the recovery partition. If you start your MBP holding the OPTION key, you should see the internal HDD and the ML recovery partition.
You can reinstall ML or reclone using Disk Utility>restore.

Trying to partition hard drive with bootcamp

I just bought a Macbook and I am trying to set up bootcamp assistant to partition the hard drive and install Windows XP.
My question is that the guide says to have the install disc with MAC OS X ready. I cannot find an install disc and do not remember using one. I think most of the software was already loaded. It is not listed on the box as having a physical install disc included.
I cannot find anywhere on the apple website where to download the install disc software (other than purchasing the program)
What am I missing?

You received installer discs with your computer. However, there is no Windows installer with your computer. You must purchase a Windows product - either XP or Vista.
Boot Camp Assistant is used to create a Windows partition on your hard drive. After setting up the partition you then use the Windows installer disc to install Windows on the partition you created with Boot Camp Assistant. After installing Windows you then boot into Windows. Then insert the OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer into the optical drive. The Windows drivers installer should start automatically so you can install the Windows drivers needed.
I recommend you print out the documentation from Boot Camp Assistant before proceeding and read the documentation carefully.

How should an external hard drive be used?

I finally managed to install my new external hard drive. Now I have to learn how to use it. I didn't see anything at the book store that would help, so I've come here to get started.
First, are there any books, or any other sources, that would be helpful?
Next, what are some of the basic things to keep in mind, what should be transferred there, and what shouldn't?
My first idea was to transfer everything except my e-mail program and my browser. The technician that helped me install the external hard drive said that I should keep applications in the comnputer. He also said that it's recommended to have two external hard drives, one to free up memory in the computer, and one as a backup. To me, that's excessive, but I'm really looking for some guidelines on what to keep and where. Then, there's also the matter of partioning. He had me make one undivided area, but the concept of partioning exists for a reason, and I'd like to know if it's something I should do. Finally, there's the matter of things I haven't thought of and am completely unaware of. You get the picture, I am a complete beginner and I need some guidance. For example, should I keep the external hard drive on all the time or only when I'm using it?

13 GB and 150 GB. I've decided to transfer EVERYTHING from my OS 9 and OS 10 files? disks? places? to my external Hard Drive. The only thing I have to think about is which files will I also keep in my internal Hard Drive.
Third, a suggestion for a nifty free program called
Carbon Copy Cloner. You can use it to create a
bootable (Firewire drive required) clone of your
internal drive onto the external. One nice feature of
this program is that you do not have to erase the
external each time you update the clone and you can
tell CCC to not remove anything off the external that
isn't on the internal (you can tell it to remove
stuff from the external not on the internal if you
wish).
Huh? I'll have to read and reread this until it sinks in. I learn alot from this site.
So, here is what I would suggest doing first time
around (assuming a fast Firewire connection and that
your external is at least as big as your internal).
Use CCC to clone your internal to the external. As I
said, if you set it so it does NOT remove things from
the external not on the internal, you will be safe
with the stuff you have already removed from the
internal to the external not being removed.
Now that you have a clone, you can feel a little
safer deleting stuff out of the internal. If you get
to a point where you wish you hadn't deleted
something or actually mess something in the system
up, you can always get it back off the enternal drive
or even clone the external back to the internal tgo
get back to square one. If it is a Firewire drive,
and you told CCC to make the clone bootable, you can
actually boot off the external if you mess your
interal up that badly.
Anyway, the point is now you have a full backup of
your internal so you can have more freedome to clear
up your internal without too much fear of losing
something or messing up your system.

Well, I'll study what you say, but here's what I have done. One-by-one I transferred files from my internal hard drive to my external drive. "Transfered" is not the correct word, because the process merely plants a duplicate of the file in the external drive. Anyway, then I one-by-one trashed the original copies that had been left in the internal drive. The result? no backup but more space in my internal hard drive.
If I had it to do over, I would have just cloned (your word) ALL the files and later decided which ones I wanted to keep on my internal drive. However, I forgive myself. After all, I've never done it before, and it's all new to me.

How to access internal hard drive with screen not working

I am a graphic designer and i have a MacBook Pro 17 inch Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz (Santa Rosa) which i purchased in October of 2007 along with a 23 inch Apple Cinema HD Display Monitor which i have hooked up to my MacBook when i am working at home. About 2 months ago the right hand ventilator started making a very loud noise but because i had a lot work on i did not have time to send it away to be fixed. Then about a month ago the fan stopped working and i was very concerned that my MacBook was going to overheat but to my surprise the temperature never rose above 60 degrees, so i continued to work and every thing seemed to be okay. But a couple of weeks ago i was online and the computer suddenly froze up and when i restarted it all i got was a black screen on both the MacBook and the Cinema Display Monitor. The hard disk seems to boot correctly and the keyboard on the MacBook also is responsive (volume, brightness controls, caps/number lock, etc… are all responsive and the retroilumination on the keyboard also works). So on reading up on the forums i discovered that the graphics card NVIDIA 8600M GT is in fact faulty. I called apple and explained the problem and they told me that i will also have to replace the logic board.
On discovering the problem i realised that it would take a while to be fixed and i would need another Mac to continue working. So last week last week i purchased a Mac Mini and hooked it up to my Cinema Display and everything is working fine, BUT i desperately need to access my work folder on my MacBook's internal drive.
Can anybody tell me how to transfer the files from my MacBook (late 2007) to my Mac Mini without the screen working on my MacBook?
If it helps, my MacBook is running Leopard 10.5.8 and the Mac Mini is running Lion 10.7.2. The Mac Mini has an Intel i5 processor 2.3 GHz.
I would really appreciate the help, it is very urgent and i need to find a very quick solution, clients depend on it.

I am going to try the second option that you propose because as i mentioned in my first post, i had my MacBook Pro hooked up to my Apple Cinema HD Display monitor and both screens were black.

Upgrading Hard Drive with clean install, MS Office media problem.

My T61 notebook came preinstalled with MS Office software. No MS Office media (CDs/DVDs) was shipped with the T61 notebook. I want to upgrade the hard drive and clean reinstall OS and MS Office. I can create the Recovery Media using the ThinkVantage tool but that will not include MS Office.
After three calls to Lenovo help & support I am told that I have to directly contact Microsoft to get the Office CDs!
My current software setup has some corrupted ThinkVantage tools and I do not want to use the Back Up and Recovery option to reinstate Microsoft Office software because it will reinstall everything else with it too.
If I bought the Microsoft Office software along with the T61 Notebook in a single order from Lenovo, why do I have to contact Microsoft to get the Microsoft Office CDs? Any suggestions?

How to replace dv6700 hard drive with SSD

Am trying to replace failed HD with SATA SSD, but the pins are different (flat HORIZONTAL on SSD and vertical on original drive). There is no information on removing the black connector. How do I get the new drive to fit?

The dv6700 uses a plastic connector piece over the standard SATA connections on the hard drive. It looks like part of the hard drive but is a separate piece. See the standard SATA connection slots on the bottom and then the brass pins on the top? Carefully remove this plastic piece from the old hard drive and place it on the SSD and you are good to go. Can I install windows 8.1 from windows ssd hard drive with bootcamp?

I recently bought a 2009 macbook pro wiht Maverick 10.9. I had a PC running W8.1 on a crucial ssd. The ssd is working fine, it was the motherboard that was broken. I was wondering if I could image a partition on the macbook with the image software crucial provided to install W8.

Instead of trying to copy the Windows copy you have on the SSD to the internal hard drive, what I would do is to buy a USB to SATA hard drive and connect the SSD to the Mac through the USB port, and then start up your Mac from it if you need to use Windows 8.1. To do it, hold the Option (Alt) key while your Mac is starting up.
Apple does not support Windows 8 on the 2009 MacBook Pro, so you may have some problems with the trackpad and function keys

How to use multiple hard drives with RnR??

I am backing up my T61p's 500GB internal hard drives to an 750GB external USB. I just got a 1.5TB FreeAgent Seagate. I want to use that drive too to backup. I want to keep the backups that are currently on the 750GB. I simply want to *also* make a full backup to the 1.5TB. Is there an easy way to create multiple backups on multiple drives with Rescue & Recovery?
Once you choose an initial destination (USB drive), there does not seem to be an easy way to start backing up to another drive. Did I miss something?

Sorry you're having problems. Assuming you've already mounted the drive so that an external drive icon appeared on the desktop, what DO you see when you open it? ANY files?
Did any of those "weird things" include okay/cancel windows?
Is your external drive fat32, NTFS, or something else? OSX doesn't play nice with all types of partition types, so this information could help us help you.

I am trying to add a second partition to my (1TB) external firewire HD. Apparently it was preformatted as "MS-DOS (FAT)" and I started putting lots of files on there. Now the "partition" option in disk utility shows me the one partition that's on there, but all options are grayed-out - I cannot add another partition, it seems, nor change anything on the existing one. Is there any possible solution other than totally erasing the disk and starting from scratch? I would be hard-pressed to find enough disk space to (even temporarily) store the stuff that's already on that HD.
