How to access variable number of columns using ref cursor !
Hi,
I am trying to get variable number of columns using ref cursor.
Declare
mySzSql varchar2(2000);
Type dynSqlRC is Ref cursor;
current_cur dynSqlRC;
tbl_rec alt_42_consolidated%Rowtype;
Begin:
/* This works */
mySzSql := 'select *
from
Table1
Where
rowid = ''AAEWNEABXAAAAkxAAA''';
/* i want something like this to work, this is not working, giving missing variable name error */
mySzSql := 'select col1, col2, col3
from
Table1
Where
rowid = ''AAEWNEABXAAAAkxAAA''';
open current_cur for mySzSql;
fetch current_cur into tbl_rec;
close current_cur;
End;
I do have the list of desired columns which I am looking to fetch, so after taking that in the record type, how should i get their values. Is it possible to traverse tbl_rec declared above and if column name matches then I will store the value in the array and finally return this array.
Can somebody please tell me how to do this.
Thanks
It appears that this is a followup to How to loop through columns selected by select clause which is itself a followup to [url="
How to execute dynamic sql"]this earlier thread.
Assuming these are intended to be followup questions, can we please stick to a single thread? That makes it a lot easier to understand the situation and follow the conversation. Starting multiple threads makes it harder to follow the conversation.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi All,
I have a requirement that i need to execute query having dynamic number of columns using Ref Cursor e.g.
v_string := 'PO_NUMBER , ORG_ID' ;
v_query := 'SELECT '|| v_string || 'FROM table_name';
Can someone please quide me how to define Type dynamically for the above requirement ?
Thanks
Vipul Maheshwarihope you understand how to use this with the help of ref cursor
CURSOR Expressions
A CURSORexpression returns a nested cursor. This form of expression is equivalent to
the PL/SQL REF CURSORand can be passed as a REF CURSORargument to a function.
A nested cursor is implicitly opened when the cursor expression is evaluated. For
example, if the cursor expression appears in a select list, a nested cursor will be
opened for each row fetched by the query. The nested cursor is closed only when:
■ The nested cursor is explicitly closed by the user
■ The parent cursor is reexecuted
■ The parent cursor is closed
■ The parent cursor is cancelled
■ An error arises during fetch on one of its parent cursors (it is closed as part of the
clean-up)
Restrictions on CURSOR Expressions The following restrictions apply to CURSOR
expressions:
■ If the enclosing statement is not a SELECTstatement, then nested cursors can
appear only as REF CURSORarguments of a procedure.
■ If the enclosing statement is a SELECTstatement, then nested cursors can also
appear in the outermost select list of the query specification or in the outermost
select list of another nested cursor.
■ Nested cursors cannot appear in views.
■ You cannot perform BINDand EXECUTEoperations on nested cursors.
Examples The following example shows the use of a CURSORexpression in the
select list of a query:
SELECT department_name, CURSOR(SELECT salary, commission_pct
FROM employees e
WHERE e.department_id = d.department_id)
FROM departments d
ORDER BY department_name;
The next example shows the use of a CURSORexpression as a function argument. The
example begins by creating a function in the sample OEschema that can accept the
REF CURSORargument. (The PL/SQL function body is shown in italics.)
CREATE FUNCTION f(cur SYS_REFCURSOR, mgr_hiredate DATE)
RETURN NUMBER IS
emp_hiredate DATE;
before number :=0;
after number:=0;
begin
loop
fetch cur into emp_hiredate;
exit when cur%NOTFOUND;
if emp_hiredate > mgr_hiredate then
after:=after+1;
else
before:=before+1;
end if;
end loop;
close cur;
if before > after then
return 1;
else
return 0;
end if;
end;
The function accepts a cursor and a date. The function expects the cursor to be a query
returning a set of dates. The following query uses the function to find those managers
in the sample employeestable, most of whose employees were hired before the
manager.
SELECT e1.last_name FROM employees e1
WHERE f(
CURSOR(SELECT e2.hire_date FROM employees e2
WHERE e1.employee_id = e2.manager_id),
e1.hire_date) = 1
ORDER BY last_name; -
UiXML tables - variable number of columns?
I'm trying to define a <table> in a UIX page which will be generated from a set of parameters. This set of parameters will result in a varying number of columns so I'm looking at providing a DataObjectList which has DataObjects with keys for each of the columns attributes (header text, name of control, value of control etc.). I want to do something similar to <contents data:childData=...> on the <table> contents but this doesn't seem to work. It seems that <table> needs you to know how many columns will be present - is that so or is there some way I can do this?
Cheers
IanIan,
That is correct, the uiMXL <table> element cannot currently support
a variable number of columns (using something akin to the
childData support in other contexts). But there are two approaches
to get what you want.
If you know the range of possible columns, then you can add a <column>
element for each possible column in the <table>'s contents and then
databind the rendered flag of the column element to hide/show the
column as necessary.
However, the real solution to your scenario, where the number of columns
is completely unknown when you're designing the page, is our canonical
example of a time you should write Java code for a portion of your page.
Specifically, you can use the XML <include> element to refer to a
DataProvider that will programatically create a TableBean. This
technique is discussed in the Dynamic Structure for UIX pages
portion of the UIX Developer's Guide. -
How to generate report with dynamic variable number of columns?
How to generate report with dynamic variable number of columns?
I need to generate a report with varying column names (state names) as follows:
SELECT AK, AL, AR,... FROM States ;
I get these column names from the result of another query.
In order to clarify my question, Please consider following table:
CREATE TABLE TIME_PERIODS (
PERIOD VARCHAR2 (50) PRIMARY KEY
CREATE TABLE STATE_INCOME (
NAME VARCHAR2 (2),
PERIOD VARCHAR2 (50) REFERENCES TIME_PERIODS (PERIOD) ,
INCOME NUMBER (12, 2)
I like to generate a report as follows:
AK CA DE FL ...
PERIOD1 1222.23 2423.20 232.33 345.21
PERIOD2
PERIOD3
Total 433242.23 56744.34 8872.21 2324.23 ...
The TIME_PERIODS.Period and State.Name could change dynamically.
So I can't specify the state name in Select query like
SELECT AK, AL, AR,... FROM

How to know number of columns used in a cursor
Hi,
I am using some query in a cursor.
I want to know the number of columns used in that query.
Please let me how to do ?
This is required because I want to export an oracle report into MS Excel.
For this I need to know, upto which column I should write in excel cell.
I am using Oracle 9i
I hope, I am clear in my requirement.
Regards
SurendraYou could use DBMS_SQL.DESCRIBE_COLUMNS :
SQL> CREATE OR REPLACE
2 FUNCTION column_count(
3 p_stmt VARCHAR2
4 )
5 RETURN NUMBER
6 IS
7 v_cur NUMBER;
8 v_cnt NUMBER;
9 v_rec_tab DBMS_SQL.DESC_TAB;
10 BEGIN
11 v_cur := DBMS_SQL.OPEN_CURSOR;
12 DBMS_SQL.PARSE(v_cur,p_stmt,DBMS_SQL.NATIVE);
13 DBMS_SQL.DESCRIBE_COLUMNS(v_cur,v_cnt,v_rec_tab);
14 DBMS_SQL.CLOSE_CURSOR(v_cur);
15 RETURN v_cnt;
16 END;
17 /
Function created.
SQL> SET SERVEROUTPUT ON
SQL> EXEC DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('column_count is ' || column_count('select * from emp'))
column_count is 8

Procedure with variable number of columns
Hi, I have a procedure that looks like this:
PROCEDURE PROC(p_cursor OUT sys_refcursor)
And in the procedure, I build up QUERY dynamically and the number of columns varies at runtime.
At the end I do
OPEN p_cursor for QUERY
Then to call this, I'm doing
call PROC(?)
My question is, how would I go about running the query from this procedure, then adding rows or modifying the existing results, then returning the modified data?
What I want to do is add a new row based on some condition, so I still need to return a variable number of columns, but I need to modify the results before I return them.
Is there any way of doing this? I need to do some calculations on the columns (the variable columns), create a new row, insert into result set, and return this new result set.A sys_refcursor is ideally suited to pass back to a front end gui like .NET or Java which can then use that cursor to retrieve the data.
In PL/SQL there is no point in using a sys_refcursor unless you know, at design/compile time what the returned columns are going to be.
If the resultant columns are dynamic, then you have no choice but to use the DBMS_SQL package, where you can parse and execute any SQL statement you like and then use the DBMS_SQL package to describe what the resultant columns are and how many there are. From that you can reference the columns by position rather than by name.
e.g.
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE run_query(p_sql IN VARCHAR2) IS
v_v_val VARCHAR2(4000);
v_n_val NUMBER;
v_d_val DATE;
v_ret NUMBER;
c NUMBER;
d NUMBER;
col_cnt INTEGER;
f BOOLEAN;
rec_tab DBMS_SQL.DESC_TAB;
col_num NUMBER;
v_rowcount NUMBER := 0;
BEGIN
-- create a cursor
c := DBMS_SQL.OPEN_CURSOR;
-- parse the SQL statement into the cursor
DBMS_SQL.PARSE(c, p_sql, DBMS_SQL.NATIVE);
-- execute the cursor
d := DBMS_SQL.EXECUTE(c);
-- Describe the columns returned by the SQL statement
DBMS_SQL.DESCRIBE_COLUMNS(c, col_cnt, rec_tab);
-- Bind local return variables to the various columns based on their types
FOR j in 1..col_cnt
LOOP
CASE rec_tab(j).col_type
WHEN 1 THEN DBMS_SQL.DEFINE_COLUMN(c,j,v_v_val,2000); -- Varchar2

WHEN 12 THEN DBMS_SQL.DEFINE_COLUMN(c,j,v_d_val); -- Date

END CASE;

SQL>In 11g, you can create a sys_refcursor and then the DBMS_SQL package allows you to convert that refcursor into a DBMS_SQL cursor so that you can get the description of the results and do the same. This isn't available prior to 11g though.
However_ before any of that, you should really ask yourself if there is a real need to dynamically be creating queries. There is rarely any real need to do that and if you're finding it's common in your application then this is often a sign of poor design or poorly defined business requirements (leaving the technical side to try and be "flexible" and hence leading to unmaintainable code etc.). -

Display table with variable number of columns
Hello Forum,
I'm trying to build an export view of User Management Engine data. I would like to output a table with one row for every user with yes / no fields indicating membership in each of the available groups. Because the number of available groups might change in the future, I can't hardcode the column names for the groups.
That is, I call a webservice to compute a table, and I get back a table with a variable number of columns.
When I try to insert the webservice into my VC model, it complains:
"Port 'Response' was omitted because it includes nested tables, which are not presently supported by Visual Composer"
You might be interested to know that the business method of my webservice (for testing purposes) looks as follows:
public String[][] getVariableSizeArray() {
String[][] ret = new String[10][];
for (int i = 1; i <= 10; i++) {
ret<i> = new String[10];
for (int j = 1; j <= 10; j++) {
ret<i>[j] = Integer.toString(i * j);
return ret;
Any help is appreciated, and points will be awarded for helpful answers,
Sincerely,
Florian

Florian SomethingHi Florian,
dynamic data structures are not supported. You can do this with a workaround. If you know the maximum count of your columns then you can add them to the table and hide/unhide them dynamicly via a formula in the hidden condition. Of course in your WS you als need a fix structure of your columns.
This is not the best solution, I know so far, but it works. This is just one limit of VC.
Best Regards,

How to access the database jar file using the derby 10.2.1.6 database ?
Hi,
How to access the database jar file using the derby 10.2.1.6 database ?
I have used like below. And i am getting the following the error:

What could be the reason.?
Any suggestions will be appriciated.
Thanks in Advance,
Gana.ya, I have restarted. Can you please tell me whether the path which i am giving is right or not in the context file?

How to update data returned using REF CURSOR
Hi all,
I am trying to update updated data in a gridview but the update button seem to do nothing as i retrieve data using REF CURSOR.
Let me describe the architecture of my application first. I'm trying to implement best practice whenever possible. I am following the data access tutorial published in www.asp.net , the only difference is that i have an Oracle (10g) database. So I split my application into three layers, data access, business logic, and presentation layer. I'm also writing all queries in an Oracle package.
So I have my Oracle packages that perform CRUD operations. Then I have an xsd file that define dataTable based on the package procedure. My business logic layer then calls functions defined in the xsd file. And finally a detailsView control that uses an ObjectDataSource to call business logic functions.
In a nutshell, I am just trying to update records retrieved using REF CURSOR. Your help is very much appreciated. Please let me know if further details are required. Cheers,In the DataSet (xsd) where your DataTable is defined, you just need to add additional methods to the TableAdapter to handle insert, update and delete, either with SQL or by mapping to stored procedures.
Alternatively in code, create an OracleDataAdapter and supply its InsertCommand, UpdateCommand and DeleteCommand.

How to call a Stored Procedure with a REF CURSOR output parameter
I am looking forward an example that call a stored function/procedure with a REF CURSOR output parameter and get the result.
In other words, I have a stored function/procedure that execute a SELECT statement using the OCI library and then it could get the values of each column and each row.
I put a code snippet, it have only the main thing to call a simple stored procedure and print the name of each column of the cursor, but I couldn´t to print out the values in the table that call the stored procedure.
I understand that the next step, it is to call a OCIStmtFetch.
How to associate the cursor with the OCIStmtFetch?
If you need more information, only tell me.
I am using ANSI C with HP-UX Operative System (C for HP-UX) and Oracle 10g.

/Hi Mark,
Thanks for your recommendations.
I change the code with OCIDefineByPos, one for each parameter from cursor and then use the OCIStmtFetch.
I don´t receive a error when call OCIDefineByPos, but when I call OCIStmtFetch receive a -1 error number.
What is wrong with the code?
The script is the same.
I need your help!
Best Regards!

Report using ref cursor or dynamic Sql
Hi,
I never create a report using a ref cursor or a dynamic sql. Could any one help me to solve the below issue.
I have 2 tables.
1. Student_Record
2. Student_csv_help
Student_Record the main table where the data is stored.
Student_csv_help will contain the all the column names of the Student_record.
CREATE TABLE Student_CSV_HELP
ENTRY_ID NUMBER,
RAW_NAME VARCHAR2(40 BYTE),
DESC_NAME VARCHAR2(1000 BYTE),
IN_OUTPUT_LIST VARCHAR2(1 BYTE)
SET DEFINE OFF;
Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
(ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
Values
(1, 'S_ID', 'Student ID', 'Y');
Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
(ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
Values
(2, 'S_Name', 'Student Name', 'Y');
Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
(ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
Values
(3, 'S_Join_date', 'Joining Date', 'Y');
Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
(ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
Values
(4, 'S_Address', 'Address', 'Y');
Insert into TOA_CSV_HELP
(ENTRY_ID, RAW_NAME, DESC_NAME, IN_OUTPUT_LIST)
Values
(5, 'S_Fee', 'Tution Fee', 'N');
commit;
CREATE TABLE Student_record
S_ID NUMBER,
S_Name VARCHAR2(100 BYTE),
S_Join_date date,
S_Address VARCHAR2(360 BYTE),
S_Fee Number
Insert into Student_record
(S_ID, S_Name, S_Join_date, S_Address,S_Fee)
Values
(101, 'john', TO_DATE('12/17/2009 08:00:00', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'), 'CA-94777', 2000);
Insert into Student_record
(S_ID, S_Name, S_Join_date, S_Address,S_Fee)
Values
(102, 'arif', TO_DATE('12/18/2009 08:00:00', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'), 'CA-94444', 3000);
Insert into Student_record
(S_ID, S_Name, S_Join_date, S_Address,S_Fee)
Values
(103, 'raj', TO_DATE('12/19/2009 08:00:00', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'), 'CA-94555', 2500);
Insert into Student_record
(S_ID, S_Name, S_Join_date, S_Address,S_Fee)
Values
(104, 'singh', TO_DATE('12/20/2009 08:00:00', 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'), 'CA-94666', 2000);
Commit;
Now my requirement is:
I have a form with Student_record data block. When i Click on print Button on this form. It will open another window which has Student_CSV_HELP.DESC_NAME and a check box before this.
The window look like as below:
check_box DESC_NAME+
X S_ID+
-- S_Name+
X S_Join_date+
X S_Address+
-- S_Fee+
X means check box checked.+
-- means check box Unchecked.+
After i selected these check boxes i will send 2 parameters to the report server
1. a string parameter to the report server which has the value 'S_ID,S_Join_date,S_Address' (p_column_name := 'S_ID,S_Join_date,S_Address');
2. the s_id value from the student_record block (p_S_id := '101');
Now my requirement is when i click on run. I need a report like as below:
Student ID : 101+
Joining Date : 12/17/2009 08:00:00+
Address : CA-94777+
This is nothing but the ref cursor should run like as below:
Select S_id from student_record block S_id = :p_S_id;
Select S_Join_date from student_record block S_id = :p_S_id;
Select S_Address from student_record block S_id = :p_S_id;
So, according to my understanding i have to select the columns at the run time. I dont have much knowledge in creating reports using ref cursor or dynamic sql.
So please help me to solve this issue.
Thanks in advance.Plain sql should satisfy your need. Try ....
Select S_id, S_Join_date, S_Address
from student_record
where S_id = :p_S_id -
Cursors are not closed when using Ref Cursor Query in a report ORA-01000
Dear Experts
Oracel database 11g,
developer suite 10.1.2.0.2,
application server 10.1.2.0.2,
Windows xp platform
For a long time, I'm hitting ORA-01000
I have a 2 group report (master and detail) using Ref Cusor query, when this report is run, I found that it opens several cursors (should be only one cursor) for the detail query although it should not, I found that the number of these cursors is equal to the number of master records.
Moreover, after the report is finished, these cursors are not closed, and they are increasing cumulatively each time I run the report, and finally the maximum number of open cursors is exceeded, and thus I get ORA-01000.
I increased the open cursors parameter for the database to an unbeleivable value 30000, but of course it will be exceeded during the session because the cursors are increasing cumulatively.
I Found that this problem is solved when using only one master Ref Cursor Query and create a breake group, the problem is solved also if we use SQL Query instead of Ref Query for the master and detail queries, but for some considerations, I should not use neither breake group nor SQL Query, I have to use REF Cursor queries.
Is this an oracle bug , and how can I overcome ?
Thanks

How to pass strings for IN Clause in REF Cursor
I have following query;
SELECT 1 INTO L
FROM test_po_apprvlines
where '4020' between NVL(approval_cost_centre_from, '0000') and
nvl (approval_cost_centre_to, '9999')
and req_approval_type IN ('BUS', 'FIN') and 10500 >= approval_amount
and NVL(req_line_type, 'X') = 'X'
AND ROWNUM =1;
Now the values for req_approval_type should be dynamic, based on approval_amount. If approval_amout > 10000 then
req_approval_type should have 'BUS' and 'FIN' , other wise only 'BUS'.
I have tried with the following code using ref cursor. But i'm not getting the result.
