How to animate with Java - help.

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could help me on how to go about animating in java. Basically, I am trying to animate an horizontal and vertical lines. The horizontal line should go from left to right while the vertical should go from top to bottom. I have the basic knowledge of Java so I shouldn't have any problem. It's just that I haven't really used Swing and animations.
Any help you offer would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Thanks a lot for your help. I have got that book now and i'll have a look.You won't regret it. I absolutely love that book for both its content and clarity.Don't forget readability.
While I have read several technical books from cover to cover, never have I voluntarily done it twice for any other book. But filthy rich clients is so easy and even fun to read I have read it cover to cover three times already. Great book!

• How to deal with java integrity??

Hi everyone,
it's just few months that I have started to use Java and since, I've been really confused how to use it. As I've been using C++ before, it's really easy for me to handle a few libraries and keywords and write every thing all by my own. But in Java, TOOOO many libraries and keywords all with different procedures and different cases that really bothers me and I can't understand how to deal with all these. As an example, When I just want to start and write a program, I start searching the net and wow. too many different classes and different Keywords that I get too confused and I prefer not to continue. Would someone please help me and tell me how to find a solution for this essential problem???

• How to deal with java.io.EOFException error in Java application?

Recently a java application called Jin stopped working on my iMac under 10.6.8. On startup it gives a java.io.EOFException error. When I boot from a full backup on external hard disk, the program still works fine. It has run without problem for at least two years.
This program logs onto an online chess community called ICC (see chessclub.com) using a non-http protocol.
I have tried everything I can think of to repair the problem, including:
-- Reinstalling both Jin and Java
-- Playing with Java Preferences, in particular trying both 32-bit and 64-bit versions
-- Discarding a couple .plist files associated with Java and Jin
-- Repairing permissions
-- Replacing /usr/share/java/Tools with version from backup disk (I created a Smart Folder to find files recently changes, and these were the only java files that came up
I've run out of ideas. It seems to me that some obscure Java support file has been corrupted, but I have no idea what or where.
Is it a good idea to replace the entire /Library folder from backup, or is that going to cause a problem?
I have a very bad feeling about replacing /System from backup.

• Rdf with java help

anyone know of a way to take an rdf file and convert it to a simple text file. the rdf file i have just contains information about meetings, start time, location etc and i just want to convert to a simple text file like the one below....
meeting paul;
time: 3.00pm;
location: building.
or if you know how to go from the above text file to an rdf file that would be great aswell, cheers.

sorry i should have been more specific. yeah i know all about xml parsers and my idea was just to read in the text file using java and if the string location is read in for example then just to output the rdf tag location in the rdf file. ive done this before but complications arose when validating it etc, just thought there might be a library like Jena to do it properly for me.

• How to start with java card

hello,
i'm new to java card n know a bit of core java.. my superior of company asked me to get complete knowledge on java card.. iworked for 1 month on native cards..n know a bit of gsm 11.14. I want a favour.
my queries:-
a) how and from where should i start
b) wat all basics i need to know &
c)how to work on this card.
ANY REPLY WILL BE APPRECIATED..
Thanks

a)
- Look at Sun's tutorials on Java Card.
- Z. Chen's book from Sun about smart cards gives you deeper knowledge about the Java Card technology.
- Furthermore there is a great reference book about smart cards in general from W. Rankl.
b)
- Java: You should have basic understanding and knowledge about Java.
- Java Card: is a subset of Java, but you need to be much more aware of the Java Card VM and RE.
- You need to have some specifications at hand
- Java Card API, VM and RE
- GlobalPlatform
- ISO 7816 and ISO 14443 for CL
c)
- There is a number of smart card operating systems.
- I recommend the Java Card Open Platform (JCOP) from IBM/NXP. There is a good developer environment (JCOP Tools plugin for Eclipse) where you can start developing against a smart card SW simulator.

I would like to know if it is possible to use a proxy of any and how ? kind with java applications.
thank you

Well, it works well when, into my applet, i do somethig like this:
URL url = new URL(host);
URLConnection connexion = url.openConnection();My applet uses proxy setting from IE6 but only if i use Java 1.4.2_08.
With IE6 and Java 1.5.04, it doesn't work (my applet doesn't use proxy settings)
With Firefox and Java 1.5.04, it's ok
Have you already seen a problem like this with Java 1.5.04 ?

• Special double quotes and apostrophes in java help

We are writing help for an application and using doctor help to generate it. The help is written in Word and converted to html. Word however, converts all the " characters to those "squiggly ones" which point towards the word they're quoting.
When we viewed the generated help with java help those squiggly were not rendered. They are rendered as a square which means java help does not understand them.
I'm sure someone else must have encountered this issue.
Please can you tell me how to successfully render the squiggly double quotes in java help?

You need the following encoding for those characters:
“
”
using an xml encoder, e.g. xmlenc solves this issue, otherwise you must do it manually.
But I have a related problem. When characters in the XML file are encoded
they are only displayed correctly if some non encoded character follows.
When there are two successive encoded characters then only the first one
is displayed correctly. Putting a whitespace in between them displays both
characters correctly, but with the whitespace in between.
I guess there is an issue with the XML parser. Changing the encoding of the XML file does not help.
example: TOC.xml file (displayed correctly in IE)
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='ISO-8859-9' standalone='yes' ?>
<!DOCTYPE toc PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems Inc.//DTD JavaHelp TOC Version 1.0//EN" "http://java.sun.com/products/javahelp/toc_1_0.dtd"><!--generated by JHelpDev Version: 0.4, 18 August 2005, see jhelpdev.sourceforge.net-->
