How to back up projects and raw AVCHD footage???

Please bear with me as I'm really new to digital editing. I'm trying to understand how to work with AVCHD files. Obviously, these are too large to store on my computer once they are ingested; hence, the only option is to store the raw footage. I can burn the raw AVCHD footage to DVD no problem (I use an optional DVD burner that works with my Canon HF-10 camera). Now I'm trying to understand how to work with the system (i.e. save project files for re-editing later on). I'm using a Canon HF-10, and Final Cut Express 4, on a new MacBook Pro.
Here's how I think it might work, but please correct me if I'm wrong:
1) I begin a new project, ingesting the raw AVCHD footage as I need it.
2) I edit the footage and save the completed project.
3) With the project completed, and since the ingested video files are too big to save, I delete the ingested footage from the scratch drive, but still saving the FCE project file (This means that if I open the project file now, I will get a message telling me the media files have gone offline).
4) I move on to my next project, and carry on ingesting new AVCHD files as I did with the original project.
Here's where I'm confused...
5) I later come back to the original project to make a few changes.
QUESTION: Can I simply re-ingest the raw AVCHD footage into the scratch folder and carry on editing the first project? Or will I have problems with Final Cut Express finding the media files??? Or any other problems??
There may be easier ways to do this for someone who understands computers better than I do. I am looking for the simplest solution that will work for me, since I really don't have any technical computer skills/abilities. Will the procedure I described above work???
Thanks so much for your advice!

I'm no pro, and surely not a technical wizard, but what I plan on doing is this:
Back up the raw AVCHD files on DVD (2 copies ideally). Delete them from the camera. Ingest the files into FCE and edit. I won't change the name of the raw media files at any time, to avoid confusing FCE. Once I've finished editing, I'll keep the FCE project file (and any related files) on my hard drive. However, I will delete the huge ingested files from the hard drive (because, no matter how big an external drive you have, to me using 160GB to store two hours of video is nuts). Then, if at a later date I want to re-edit, I'll re-ingest the original files back onto the scratch drive. I figure FCE will read them fine, since they haven't changed; they've merely been removed and replaced. One key point here is that, when ingesting the AVCHD files, you must ingest the complete clips, not just a part of them. That way, nothing about the files (such as the length, starting and finishing points, etc.) will have changed. It may seem a bit awkward, but that's about the only way I, being a technophobe, can understand how to do it without keeping huge files on a hard drive. And, I am only speculating that this will work. At this point, I'm still waiting on the DVD burner that works with my Canon camcorder to arrive in the mail. Then I'll do some testing/experimenting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

  • How to connect Template project and Implementation project

    Hi Experts,
I would like to know how to connect Template project and Implementation project
        in Solution maneger.   Please help.
    Best regards,
       Gaito

    Hey Gaito,
great. Now that you have a template project, you need to create one or more templates within the project template.
Go to tab Templates (of your Templ Proj) and activate 'Global Rollout Functionnality' to be able to use the templates.
Create a new template thanks to button create. Visibility will be set to red 'private'. You ll have to set it to visible so it becomes visible from your implementation project.
You ll see when trying to do that next message 'No scenarios/configuration structures assigned to the template XXXX'. That means that in SOLAR01 you did not define a scenario that ll be used in template you re trying to create
In order to do that go to SOLAR01 for template project, select/create scenarios in tab structure and set in column template value of your template (the one you re creating in SOLAR_PROJECT_ADMIN) and in Global Attribute set value t Global
You l definitely find more info on this in sap document SMI310 (course). I don t know if you can find it on internet
    Hope this helps

  • Logged and Transfered AVCHD footage has dropped frames or appears jerky.

Hey I just got off the phone after 2 hours with Apple care which offered no answers to this issue. My co worker is able to log and transfer without problem on his computer from my "Sony HDR CX12" AVCHD Full 1080. But both of my machines no go. I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!! Dropped frames for sure on logged and transfered AVCHD footage.
I called back Apple Care and they are attempted to recreate the same system set up as I had to verify that iLife 2009 is screwing up FCP 6.0.6
I've found some other work arounds if you are having this problem. Please let me know since my case is still open with Apple Care and I would like to be able to mention that others are having issue with this.

This is one weird post. I don't understand what you are babbling about.
I re-installed OS X 10.5.7 and all applications including FCP 6.0.6 and discovered that if you have QUICKTIME or iLife apps (i.e. iMovie, iPhoto etc... open then your doomed!!!!
COMPLETELY wrong. That couldn't be more wrong. Quicktime is the basic engine of FCP...it captures all footage as QT files. Without QT FCP would not function. And of course it works with iMovie and iPhoto installed...those are basic Apple applications. I have those on all my machines that have FCP and have had zero issues. Well, the issues you have are NOT related to having those applications installed. That is silly talk.
Now...when you import AVCHD footage, you have the choice on what CODEC you can use when you import. Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) or ProRes. AIC is nice and light, and can be played back on a firewire drive, but lack essential things like TIMECODE...and the quality isn't all that great. ProRes on the other hand is great quality and has timecode, but has a high data rate. A firewire 400 drive will not work...firewire 800 might, but raided firewire 800 like a G-Raid would be advisable. eSATA drives or internal SATA drives all the better.
iLife 09 is not screwing up FCP 6.0.6. I have iLife 09 and FCP 6.0.6 and have zero issues. most people do.

  • Log and Transfer AVCHD footage

    Hello,
got a bizarre situation here with trying to log and transfer AVCHD footage: It's worked perfectly fine before, the volume automatically showing up in the Log and Transfer window. I shot additional footage on the same card (without erasing the older footage) and now nothing shows up in the Log and Transfer window. File structure on the card is intact, FCP seetings (ProRes LT) are the same and I can see the footage is there on the camera. Whatever I try, I can't get FCP to 'see' the card's content, not even the older footage which it transferred alright before.
I'm running FCP 6.0.6 and the only difference I can think of to the previous time when log and transfer worked is that I may have updated FCP (not sure what my previus version was, but it was only an incremental update).
I'm totally at aloss with this one – anyone out there with a clue what might be causing this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Des

Try using the add volume button and pointing to the card, which I assume is mounted on the desktop. If you select the volume do the clips load?

  • IMovie '09 - saving and backing up Projects and Events

It's taken about two years, but I finally think that IM '09 is better than HD '06.
Now that I am comfortable, have started to work on all those videos going back (yikes, 25 years) and four formats. Hopefully will complete the project prior to getting the "Final Cut" so to speak!!
As I'm anal about saving and backup, I have three copies of the events, and three copies of my projects.
I think I have finally worked out what happens when a change is made to a date in an event, and which projects do or don't show up when you open iMovie.
As there isn't any official (as far as I know) method of synchronizing projects, I would imagine that the best and speediest editing protocol would be:
    a) to keep and only edit the projects on the host computer (that's doing the editing) - I have noticed that any changes to a project are ONLY made to the copy that you are ACTUALLY working with on the host computer - and copies on external drives are not altered (unless you select that drive's copy in the project finder) - IOW, only one copy is changed at one time.
    b) back up the project to the external drive at the end of the edit
    c) as all changes (I assume) are only made in the project, as long as one doesn't delete any unused clips, the events should remain the same wherever they are stored - so, no need to back up once they have already been saved to the back up drive(s)?
Once a project is finished, and say, burned to DVD or BD, how do most people save - finished movie back on the tape, or just one or two copies on an external drive?
I would be grateful for input on "best practices" in this regard.

Great question. I think the issue of backup is a important one, and one I always worry about since I have a lot of video footage that is irreplaceable.
For back-up, it is helpful to define the risk you are trying to protect from.
    For example,
    1) risk of corruption in iMovie --> I might use Time Machine (but I do not because I have not had the issue)
    2) risk of hard drive failure --> I use SuperDuper! nightly
    3) Risk of theft or fire --> offsite backup
    Here is what I do...
    1) I back up my boot disk with SuperDuper automatically to alternate external partitions every other night so I always have two bootable systems. One is less than one day old, and one is less than two days old.
    2) I back up my original video files. For my Motion JPEG, VHS-->AIC, DV, and 8MM to DV, the EVENT is the copy I back up. For my AVCHD high def video, I back up the archive of the AVCHD, but I am not currently backing up the Event files, because I would need from 4 to 8 TB to back up these events depending on whether I made one copy or two.
    3) I use CrashPlan for my offsite backup. It costs less than $4 per month, and I seeded the initial backup to an external drive to minimize having to transfer video files over the Internet. I currently have 1.2TB of data backed up to CrashPlan, which includes my entire boot drive, and the files described in #2.
    4) All of the above is automated, so I don't have to think about it too much. If I have to manually do stuff, I tend to get behind.
You have to consider the value of total multiple redundancy vs. the likelihood that 2 or three unlikely events would all happen at once. For example, CrashPlan could lose my data. My hard disk could fail. I could lose everything in a fire. But it is unlikely that they would all happen at once, except in nuclear war, in which case, who cares?
I am considering adding Time Machine backup and some off-site backup of the Event files into the mix, but for now I am satisfied.

  • How to Import Garageband projects and files into Cubase for Windows?

    Hi
I've recently started using Garageband to record my ideas and compositions. I had 2 main questions:
    1. How do I transfer the audio files created in Garageband in a format which will allow me to edit them in Music Software for a Windows based Operating system? Tranferring them to iTunes and then converting them to MP3 doesn't help because then my friends can't edit my guitar parts and other backing tracks.
Mainly I need to know how to save and import Garageband projects and individual tracks into Cubase/ Cakewalk for Windows so that my band guys can edit the tracks and send me their ideas.
I'm the only one out of my friends who has an Apple Macbook and most of my band guys still use Windows based Operating systems.
    2. I record my guitars and other instruments using the Digitech GNX4 guitar effects processor as the sound source through USB. While I can record clean guitar without any problem, the moment I switch on the distortions on the GNX 4, there is a loud and constant hum from the speakers. I am therefore not being able to record distorted guitar sounds.
    Please help on this.
Thanks and hope to hear from you all.
    Cheers
    Prash

Tranferring them to iTunes and then converting them to MP3
    same as the protools procedure:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#openinprotools
there is a loud and constant hum from the speakers.
Could be a ground loop problem. Test it using the MacBook on battery power only.

  • CS3 How to archive finished projects and erase all draft materials without losing final versions.

I have two questions, both related to system management. The first is simple and the second is more complex.
First, I hate that every time I open a Premiere Pro project I have to remember to reset the scratch disc settings because they are carried over from the previous project rather than being project-specific.
Is there a workaround so that the scratch disc settings can be attached to each project so they don’t need to be reset each time one reopens a project?
Second, I presently distribute my work over four (4) 1-TB drives as follows.
Drive D contains my Premiere (prproj and related) files as well as Encore (ncor DVD/BD burn files).
Drive E contains all captured files (transferred from tape).
Drives F and P are scratch drives where all the preview files are stored, both audio and video.
Presently, scratch drives F and P are full, project drive D is nearly full, and I am finished editing the projects which occupy these drives. Drive E, however, still has plenty of unused space.
What I want to do now is to archive the finished projects, along with associated preview files, source clips, and burn files on the E drive, which has plenty of free space remaining. Then I want to delete the project and associated assets from Drive D and erase both scratch drives F & P so that I can reuse those drives for new work.
To do that I have tried using the Project Manager to “collect files and copy to new location” to collect and copy each project to its own folder on the E drive.
The problem is that, having done that, and removed the preview files and project files from their original locations, when attempting to open the now relocated projects from their new locations, the relocated projects continue to look for the associated preview files in the old location (drive F or P), even though all the files associated with each relocated project now reside on the same drive in the same folder. It appears that the Project Manager does not associate the preview files and source clips that it relocates with the project files that it relocates.
Can someone explain this and how best to accomplish my goal of relocating and archiving finished projects along with their associated previews and source materials so that the originals can safely be deleted?
    Thanks.

Is there a workaround so that the scratch disc settings can be attached to each project so they don’t need to be reset each time one reopens a project?
Yes.  Upgrade to CS5.5.  (This feature first showed up in CS4.)
What I want to do now is to archive the finished projects
You can safely delete everything on the F and P drives.  Previews can simply be rebuilt.  No need to waste space trying to save them.
Save the project files on the D drive.  Delete the media on E (you can always recapture if you need to rebuild).
Do not use the Project Manager.  Premiere Pro is an NLE.  Use it for it's intended purpose.  Use a real file manager (Windows Explorer on the PC, Finder on the Mac) to execute file operations.

  • How to delete all projects and accompanied files from Adobe Premeiere Elements 13

I would like to delete all projects and files and start anew, but I cannot find a clear enough instruction how to do it. Please help'

    vitprod
    Same other versions as well.
There is no one delete button that wipes away the project file (.prel) and the project's assets. You need to go to the save locations of the project file (.prel) and its assets and delete
each one by one wherever they are saved UNLESS you pre-plan and, before the project is created, set up a particular project so that the project file with assets goes to its own folder instead of each component of the project going into a common place for Premiere Elements files and folder where you have to pick out the materials for deletion one by one by name.
    Answers
    Default type situation
If left at defaults and if your Premiere Elements 13 is running on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit, go to Libraries/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Elements/13.0 and, in the 13.0 Folder, delete standalone files with your target project's name and delete files with your target project's name in the folders found in the 13.0 Folder.
    Plan Ahead
Edit Menu/Preference/Scratch Disks - Set all to Same As Project.
Create a new folder at a hard drive location of choice. Then point the project file to that folder for the Save In.
Tip: When the Expert workspace of the new project opens, go to File Menu/Save As. Name the project and set the new folder created as the Save In of the Save Project dialog.
Please review and consider and then let us know if any of that worked for you.
    Thanks.

  • How to have my Jpg and RAW files in version sets (PSE10)

I take both jpg and RAW files on my camera so that most of the time I am pleased with the jpg and do little editing, but some of the time I need to really work on a photo which is where the RAW file comes in handy. In my photo well I have 2 of each picture displayed ie the jpg and RAW. How can I get it so only the jpg is displayed and the RAW either hidden or as a version set collapsed? Having 2 of each photo makes the photo well look untidy and full of duplicates.
    Help appreciated.

Highlight the two photos (using Ctrl+click), right-click on one of them and select "Stack...Stack Selected Photos".

  • How do I move projects and associated media to new Library?

I have accidentally made 3 little test projects in an "old" Library containing numerous long projects.
I now want to move the test projects and their media to a new Library specifically for them.
    How?

Drag the project over the desired library and before you release the mouse button hold down the command key.
You should see the green ball with the plus sign disappear. After you release, you'll be presented with a confirmation dialog.
Apparently, there is a bug in that that dialog always calls the destination library "Final Cut Pro", but that seems to be an oversight without other consequences.

Transfering music to your pc is only possible if you bought the music via iTunes. Then you can tranfer your purchases back to your computer.
Or you have to look for 3rd party software to transfer music you didn't buy in itunes to your pc. Search in google for "iphone music backup" or see this link:

  • How to delete extension, project and generated tasks in EEW

    Hi all,
I have created a project in EEW. Then I have generated an extension for this project, and errors occured during generation. When i have tried to delete the EEW extension and project, i get the Error Message no. OXT_MISC015. I have tried to delete the customizing and workbench requests, but it wasnt much of help.
    Points will be rewarded.

    Abhishek
I tried to delete the extension, in the Log tab, I only got one error which is:
Table CI_EEW_ORDERADM_H can't be created with package $TMP
Seems like the deletion process tried to change the structure CI_EEW_ORDERADM_H.
I checked this structure, there is already a field added by other developer, but this structure is apparently in another z-package.
So what I should do now?
    Thanks

  • How can I copy projects and events to an external hard drive from iMovie 10?

I have created a project in iMovie 10, which I would now like to share with a colleague, in a form in which he can edit just like I can.  I do not see a way to copt projects and events to an external hard drive,  the way I could from previous versions of iMovie. Any suggestions?

You can copy an iMovie 10 library to an external volume (HD, Thumb drive etc.) with the Finder so as to share it with a colleague.   You may find the following link helpful:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Before copying the library you have to make sure that all media is in the library.  Media from iTunes, iPhoto and similar are by default linked to my iMovie and not copied to the library.  To resolve this you may need to consolidate media before you copy the library.  See for details:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov882dee351
Note that your colleague has to be using the same version of iMovie.  Even different minor updates may cause problems.
    I hope this helps.

  • Data Recover From Formatted Drive? What is the best program to use to get back Logic Projects and any other file type?

I was in the process of reorganising my hard drives so I could RAID them however I managed to corrupt one drive and had to format it which meant I lost all my Logic Files and some other files. I managed to save a lot of files (mainly video files) before I had to format the drive but I need a Data Recovery service that will not alter anything on the hard drive and will put all the formatted files (regardless of the type) back for me so I can get the rest of the ones I need.
    Thanks in advance.

    What about folders and such?
No. FS doesn't reconstruct folders. However, Data Rescue does, depending on how you use it. About the only thing in Data Rescue a Quick Scan ever seems to show you are files that are already live.
So that leaves you with a Deep Scan, or a Deleted Files scan. The first pass of a Deep Scan will attempt to retrieve folders and files, along with their original names. The second pass only looks for file patterns. Like recognizing a Photoshop .psd file. It will recover it, but give it a nonsense name. A Deleted Files scan only results in nonsense names of recognized file types; no folders.
What were you using File Salvage on? A hard drive?
Yes, though you can use it on a flash drive, or any other mounted drive.
At the moment it is estimating 289 hours remaining on a 1TB drive. Can it not go faster?
No, both of the software mentioned are slower than molasses in January. When you delete anything in Windows, its file table entry simply tagged as deleted. So to unerase them, the tag is removed. That's why it works to quickly and easily (assuming you haven't already overwritten the data to be recovered).
In OS X though, the whole idea of the underlying UNIX structure is all about security. It's not supposed to be easy to retrieve deleted items. When you delete items, their file table entries are erased. So the only way to find deleted items is to scour the entire drive for BOF (Beginning Of File) markers that don't have a matching starting block to anything that is in the file table.
Another question, half the drive was empty. Will it fly over that empty space or will it sieve through it incase there was some files stored on it?
If you use the Expert mode is FS, you can choose to do that:
