  • How do I make a  backup copy of purchased software ?

    Hi everybody :
I just purchased PhotoShop Elements 12 (Download).  How do I make a backup copy of this software ?  In the event of a System Crash.      I have a copy on my DeskTop and in my Startup Menu.

    Hi stanulg1952
You need not to make a copy .. In case your system crashes, you can download it again ....
Otherwise, You can write it on a optical Disc and use it in future ....But make sure you keep the Installation files on the disk, not the one which are there on your desktop after installtion

  • How can I keep a backup copy of my iTunes library with tracks not coded and scrambled

I have about 80GB in my iTunes library and would like to keep a backup copy of all the music in folders under composers, without them being scrambled or any the numbers which are automatically placed in front of each track, which is what happens if I drag and drop them from iTunes. How can I achieve this?

Thaks for trying but this isn't relevant. I'm not refering to CDs or importing material. I have an iTunes library with nearly 20,000 tracks in it. It is also backed up with a straight copy of the entire works.
What I want to do is back up the whole lot in a package containing only the music under it's name  and it's original track numbers. I can show best what I mean by dragging and dropping just two piano concertos out into an external folder.
    e.g.
if this how they apper in my itunes play list
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 2 - 1. (Allegro con brio)
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 2 - 2. (Adagio)
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 2 - 3. (Rondo_ Molto allegro)
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 - 1. Allegro Con Brio
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 - 2. Largo
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 - 3. Rondo_ Allegro
What I get when I drag these out into a folder on an expernal drive (or even on the desk top of my iMac) is this
    01 Beethoven_ Piano Concerto No. 2 - 1. (Allegro con brio).m4a
    01 Beethoven_ Piano Concerto No. 3 - 1. Allegro Con Brio.m4a
    02 Beethoven_ Piano Concerto No. 2 - 2. (Adagio).m4a
    02 Beethoven_ Piano Concerto No. 3 - 2. Largo.m4a
    03 Beethoven_ Piano Concerto No. 2 - 3. (Rondo_ Molto allegro).m4a
    03 Beethoven_ Piano Concerto No. 3 - 3. Rondo_ Allegro.m4a
You can imagine what a mess this is when I drag 20,000 tracks into an external backup folder. All the track ones (several thousand of them) of every piece in the entire collection will be listed first. And then all the track 2s.
    I can't sort that out.
If there is a solution I think it possibly lies in the iTunes preference options. There is one, but I daren't try it for fear of unscrabbling the whole iTunes library and completely throwing all the play lists, folders and everything into a total unsorted mess. I refer to the tick box in the iTunes preference folder 'Keep iTunes media folder organised (places files into album and artist folders and names the files based on disk number, track number and song title)'
If I untick this would I unscramble years of carefully sorting disks as I imported them?

    Hi Brain,
Yes you are correct. I am trying to achieve this by manually deleting the all hidden .svn folder from the workspace. Now I am getting the Versioning-->Import Files option for the workspace. Still in between the process of importing the files to new SVN. Is it the correct approach, or any one has other approach to do it.?

  • How do I make a backup copy of a disc burned by iDVD . . .?

. . . after iDVD wiped out the archive file of the project.
After burning the first disc, I went back in to iDVD to make a change using the DVD map feature, then I clicked save.  Crash!  When I reopened iDVD there was now a blank screen for the project.  Quitting the program to open via the archive file on my hard drive had the same result.  This means that first disc is now the only record of the entire project, so I want to copy it.
Can I copy the disc in iDVD?  If, yes, then how?
If, no, then is there another way I can do that on my iMac with a Mountain Lion updated OS?
P.S.  I was about to try burning a copy in Mac Utilities by selecting the disc and clicking the burn icon . . . but got cold feet.  I don't want to take any chances of inadvertantly ruining the dvd disc in the process.

Use Disk Utility to create a disk image of the disk.  Then you can burn that disk image to disc again with Disk Utility.
First try this basic troubleshooting fix:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
    User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
    User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - launch IDVD and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

    scarlattid3,
The cancel button should be located in the bottom right corner of the screen. The only thing is it's not going to show up until you start the print job or copy and then it should appear for you.
Let us know if you are able to find this.

  • Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog?

Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog
I deleted a tif image file that I didn't intend to, which had several LR virtual copies created from it. The virtual copies had a lot of important history that document my print preparation edits. Are these virtual copies saved in the LR backups?
If so, how can I insert them into the catalog I am using? I have made a lot of edits in the two days since my last backup and don't want to lose that history either. Do you suggest I make a current backup before retrieving files from my last backup? I know I'm supposed to go to the backup location and open the last backup, but how do I blend that with the current work from the last 2 days?
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Tom

    Rob,
That was exactly what I was after. However, I'm still having trouble getting the virtual copies imported. The master file was in my trash, I restored it to the original hard drive folder. Before I got your message I re- imported it to LR but of course LR came up with a new name since I was importing from and saving it to the same folder in LR. And of course no copies. This may have been a mistake, but before starting the procedure you described, I re-named the master file (it seemed that the import from backup would re-create it so I didn't want  a conflict).
Then I did what you said and used the 'Import From Another Catalog' feature. I found the virtual copies in the backup and checked them. But when the import completed, the it gave me file names  xxx/Copy1, xxx/Copy2 but there was no image or history or metadata. When I tried to find the folder containing the files, it said it couldn't be found. So I missed something in the settings. When I tried again, there was a warning saying the file(s) exists in the catalog and its settings differ. I went ahead anyway and the message I got was "No Photos in previous import"
Here's what the import from backup shows:
A box with catalog contents and all the folders and files within them, that you can check.
A New Photos section, which gives 2 file handling choices: a)add new photos to the catalog without moving them or b) don't import new photos
A Changed existing photos section with 2 replace options: a) nothing or b) Metadata and develop setting only. If you choose this you can check a box to preserve old settings as a virtual copy.
Not sure what to do. I changed the master file back to its original name, but that didn't make a difference. Suggestions? Thanks, Tom

    Ok. Got it.
Can you cancel that message or anything?
Can you perform the tasks I mentioned above to reload the OS?
    If not, do this below:
    1) Make sure you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed.
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/
    2) On your PC, go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line exactly (meaning with the quotation marks):
    "c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader\loader.exe" /nojvm
    3) The Application Loader Wizard will appear -- click "Next."
    4) In the "Connection:" drop-down menu, you should see "USB-PIN: UNKNOWN". Click the "Next" button.
    5) You should then see a list of applications ready to be installed for your Blackberry. Hit Next and Finish and you are well on your way to getting your Blackberry back to life.
Just don't disconnect anything and let the lengthy process finish completely.
NOTE: If you do not see a list of applications mentioned in step 5 and instead see the message "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator," then you must download Blackberry's Operating System for your carrier and device.
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/BlackBerry_Operating_System_Downloads
Just select the appropriate carrier and network type, select your Blackberry model from the list and download the latest version. Install this download and follow the above steps again and you should be on the right path.

  • How I make TM use an existing backup set?

I had to get my MBP serviced due to the graphics chip recall. When it came back TM stopped backing me up. I turned it back on and it wants to create a new backup. It uses the same name for the backup but calls it #2 (e.g. My Laptop #2).
How can I force TM to use the existing backup? It goes back to March and I don't want to lose them. It wont let me copy the backups into the new folder either. Says I don't have permission. I've added myself to the permissions for the folder but no go.
    Thanks in advance.

    *_Full Backup After Hardware Change_*
Actually, this is normal. Anytime your hardware has been repaired, replaced, Time Machine will perform a new full backup and you will not be able to resume backing up with the same history as the previous backups. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed.
To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu and choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select your previous backup volume. You will enter Time Machine and be able to browse your previous back ups and restore files.
While there may be ways to fool/hack Time Machine into recognizing previous backups without performing another full backup, they are rather elaborate, and for the average user are simply not worth it. Ultimately, in a couple of months, all the effort to preserve old backups may seem pointless. After all, Time Machine will eventually purge away that data anyways as it replaces it with new files.
It may simply be easier to begin a fresh series of backups while saving the previous backups until your satisfied that you have enough history built up. Then delete the old backups.
    *Why Can’t I Resume Backups?*
You see, Time Machine was designed to restore your Macs’ immediate environment in case of system crashes or accidental deletion of user files. As a result, getting a new Mac, or changing your existing hardware requires a fresh set of backups since older backups would not accurately represent the current state of your Mac.
Furthermore, maintaining backups that were started with an older Mac, introduces the possibility of restoring system files that were never intended for the new Mac.
Finally, if backups were NOT linked to a specific Mac, imagine the confusion for Time Machine in households with multiple Macs backing up to the same Time Machine device. Backups from one Mac could unintentionally be added to the backup set of another Mac. In that event, any attempt at ‘restoring’ files/folders specific to that Mac would be impossible. As a result, each backup set must be unique for each Mac.
Fortunately, it appears that new full backups are not required after a user performs an “Archive and Install”, a “Restore System From Backup...”, or an “Erase and Install” with their Mac OS Leopard install DVD. At least this appears to be the case since the Mac OS 10.5.5 update. Nevertheless, even if Time Machine does continue using the existing backup set following these re-installation methods, then at the very least expect Time Machine to perform a "Deep Traversal" and possibly a very large incremental backup (many GBs) because of the massive differences in the FSEvents log.
If, however, a user chooses to perform a Full Restore back to a version of Mac OS X prior to 10.5.5, then Time Machine is likely to abandon the previous backup sets and perform a new full backup. [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338]
If you require long-term archival storage of files, however, then you need another backup strategy.
    Hope this clarifies some things.
    Cheers!

  • How do I use existing TM backup with upgraded Airport Extreme?

I replaced my old Airport Extreme with a dual-band Airport Extreme. I was previously using an external drive connected to the old AE for Time Machine backups. I now have everything set up, I can see the drive on the new AE in the Finder and select it in Time Machine preferences, but it doesn't show "Oldest Backup" "Latest Backup" information and I fear it's going to try to create a new backup when it runs. How can I get it to use and add to the existing backup?

No, it won't show that until a backup is done. See #B3 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

It should just do an incremental backup.

But, you need to know, backing-up that way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • My iTunes library is missing since upgrade Lion 7.2.  I have it all backed up so that's not the issue. How can I reinstall it with all my hundreds of playlists intact or do I have to recreate each one upon reinstalling the backup copy? Thank you for help

Almost my iTunes library is missing since upgrade Lion 7.2. (the last 2.5 weeks worth of added music has transferred post-upgrade, none of whcih was bought from iTunes)
I have it all backed up so that's not the issue. How can I reinstall it with all my hundreds of playlists intact or do I have to recreate each playlist upon reinstalling the backup copy? This would save a HUGE amount of time and efforts. Thank you for your help!

    hi Limnos,
I do not mean the entire ITunes folder but, rather, the contents of the ITunes folder prior to September 29th.  (90% of the media is missing, along with all playlists)  The media that remains says it was added on 9/29 although I know most of it was added many months or even years earlier. There are no playlists listed at all, before or after 9/29.  (I know for certain that I added non-iTunes purchased songs on 10/6 although I had not created playlists for them)
I have my iTunes folder backed up on both an external drive as well as Time Machine.
I run iTunes off of an ITunes folder on my computer rather than from the external, if that's what you mean about how I have it set up.
Is it OK to drag the entire iTunes folder from the external drive onto my laptop's drive and see if that fixes it?
    Thank you for your help!
    Deb

No, it's done on the computer, it's just done on the web and not through iTunes. I guess you could do it on the iPhone, but it would be easier to do on the computer.
Just go to the site linked above, then click on the big blue button and fill out the neccessary information.

how can i restore old backup without deleting my existing data. unfortunately i have deleted few of my old photos and restored them from my old backup. i got the deleted photos but lost my recent data and photos. how can i get those too.

You cannot. However, if your back up is through iTunes on your computer and you do an internet search for something like "iPhone BackUpExtractor", I believe there is software that will help you access the SQL database that is your back up. You may be able to pull out what you need.
Once you restore from a back up, any data that was on the phone is gone.
