How to connect sqldeveloper to MYSQL

Question

Is it possible to connect this product to a mysql database and run queries in MYSQL w/o migrating to Oracle? If so, can someone please point me to a decent document (hopefully one that Oracle hasn't written).

help -> check for updates -> 3rd party sqldeveloper extensions -> My sql jdbc driver 11.1.1.58.17
agree license, restart (need write access to sqldeveloper installed folders)
3/Make connection
requires connection name, username, password
hostname, port and default 'database'

tested this works for table for example.
(click on) + on connection , + on 'database', + on Tables, click on table, can choose for example columns or data.
5/use sql commands (works for many but not all commands (SQLDeveloper currently thinks it is PL/SQL, but splits up and passes the commands to Mysql) terminate statement by ';')

Two hints if you are using MySQL commands that SQLDeveloper would not otherwise handle

/*sqldev:stmt*/ if you are expecting nothing returned
e.g. script
