Border selection in V3.2

Hi hi,
Previously, in numbers '09 it was possible to select individual border, then to copy/paste style. Cannot find that In new version. Is it dissabled in v3.2?

The model for setting borders is different.  You select the option, then select the borders on which to apply them:

  • Cell border selection problem

I have a spreadsheet that is a week at a glance schedule for a dance school. There are three columns per day, each representing a different studio location. Each row represents a 15 minute block time. I have been trying to create a border for each class (class times vary from 45 minutes to 2 hours) while leaving the in-between lines blank. For each 45 minute class, I select the three cells in a column, scroll down the border selection tool and select the outside border icon, next select the type of line, then the weight, finally the color, and so on. Once I get about 50% done working my way across the spreadsheet, buggy things start to happen. For example, a horizontal line will extend across several columns, sometimes intersecting previously defined class blocks. If I try removing the errand lines, then all the frames that do require a border at that position get their border errased. I them have to go back to those cells to re-assign a border segment, but then the unwanted horizontal line will reappear in the blank cells again. Very frustrating. Also, in my opinion, there are some cell frame options that are missing in this program. I t would be nice to have a button to select the top and bottom of a frame or group of frames at the same time. At present, you have to first select the top border, format it, then the bottom border and format it. Same goes for left and tight border sections. You can't select the two outside edges to apply the same style/thickness/color. Excel's border formatting commands are much better in this regard.

    Hi Jim,
I played around with the border options today and although I didn't have the borders going where they were not wanted I understand your frustration having to set either all four or just one border at a time.
Just as an option, would filling the sets of cells with a light colour for each class work better for you?

  • Printing and saving border selection

    This question has two parts:
    1. When I try to select several row and columns and create a border, when I select the top border then try to select the bottom, it deselects the top one. How can I create multiple borders at once?
    2. I cant figure out why it will not print the borders. Do I have to save my border selection? If so, how do I do it?

    Hello
    select the block of cells
In the Inspector click the button with a cross
select the thickness (I choosed 1)
select the color ( I choosed red)
Then click the button with a surrounding square
select the thickness (I choosed 1)
select the color ( I choosed red)
    I printed it and got:

  • Allow Border Selection in Numbers 3

Is this feature gone or just buried somewhere?

    Wookie,
I think Border Selection is gone. I've not come across it nor have I seen any reference to it. Further, the process of setting border characteristics has been turned on its head. You now choose the characteristics, then identify the border to which you want them applied, whereas in the prior versions you picked the border first, then the characteristics.

  • Is there a way to add multiple borders to a single cell with one click or do I have to add one border at a time for example, one cell with borders on three sides?

I would like to know if there is a way to add multiple borders to a single cell or selection of cells in one click.  At this time, if i want to add for example a top border and a bottom border to a single cell I have to do this in two steps: first select the top border, style, thickness, and color, and then next select the bottom border, style, thickness, and color.  Is there a way to select the top and bottom border of a cell in one click?  Clicking on the top border then holding down the command key while selecting the bottom border does not work, nor does holding down the option key, the control key, or the shift key work. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the suggestion but this did not work for my Mac.  When a cell is selected for which I want borders, the entire cell is lit up.  Then when I go to the border tool and select style, thickness, and color, the entire lit up cell takes on the border, that is the Outside Edges of the cell now have a border.  So selecting the style, thickness, and color first doesn't work.
If I select the top border first (or any border), the drop down goes away and I can't select multiple borders - I get to choose one at a time.  After selecting one border, style, thickness, and color, said border is now on the spreadsheet.  Then I go back to the border selection and pick another border and the the previously selected style, thickness, and color reverts to null, so I start over with the new border style, thickness, and color.  Yes, it is tedious.
The Fix would allow the user to select multiple borders, say left and right, before the drop down goes away after selecting only one border
Does it have something to do with Allow or Disallow border selection?
    I have Numbers '09 version 2.1 (436)

  • Cell border will not hold.

A cell will not maintain a border.  When I try to select which line to use, it immediately goes back to "none", thoughts?

    Hi keirby,
Border format controls may be found in the Format bar near the top of the document window (top image) and in the Table Inspector (bottom image).
Note that there are four controls in the Format bar. The Inspector splits the first one, the border selection menu, into three sets of buttons. The remaining controls are uses to set the border Style, the border Width, and the Border Colour. If you use only the first (which is what I suspect you have done), you will have Selected the border that you want to change, but haven't specified what changes you want to make.
Here are the steps to set a wide, dashed red border on a set of three cells:
Select the cells to which the border will be applied.
In the Format bar, select the bottom border, using the first pop-up menu button.
When you release the mouse button, the blue Selection rectangle showing the three selected cells (above) will be replaces by a blue Selection line showing the bottom edge of these cells in selected. No change has yet been made to the border.
Use the Style button to choose the dashed line.
Use the Stroke Thickness button to choose 2 pt.
Click the Stroke Color Well and choose a Red from the Color Palette that opens.
The selection line will change to reflect each of these choices as it is made and applied to the selected border.
Click any unselected cell on the table to deselect the cells just changed, or click away from the table to deselect the whole table and view the changes.

  • Adding a border to a photo  in photoshop elements 6.0

Please could someone tell me how to add a border to any photo in elements 6, choose the colour, alter the width and also add text to the border, which would be wider at the bottom of the picture in some situations.
Photoshop elements is useless for "help"!
    Many thanks.

    Mark,
    1. To add border:
    Select>all
    Edit>stroke
    Enter width, color, location:inside
    2. To add text, access the horizontal type tool. The text can be positioned by dragging, and with the move tool, since it is on its own layer.
If you want to add text below the picture, you need to extend the canvas. Go to Image>resize canvas size. Try 15% (experiment), be sure relative is checked, and click on the anchor point in the 12 o'clock position. Then engage the type tool.

  • Copy and paste border style

How can I copy and paste border style in the new Number?  In the previous version, I'm able to do this by allowing border selection, now I can't.

Do you mean copy and paste style?  Can I just only copy and paste the border style of a cell?

  • Dot-Matrix table border print

    Dear gurus,
I want my output to print on Dot-Matrix printer,
Everything is fine till i try to print a table with outline in it.
I mean if i use a outline or a border for my table the whole table is displayed as a big black window.
Now if i don't use the border or outline then the whole data of the table is printed without the border.
Please help me to solve the issue.
    Regards,
    Roshan Lilaram.

Can you try to print in a different printer, if the error persists then the problem is in the smartform, otherwise raise a note to SAP regarding this. I think that there is problem is with the page format in which u are taking the printout.
    OR
Can you check if you have selected the framed border in the table border select pattern.
    Hope That Helps

  • Changing colors on a border and making border wider

I am using Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. When I choose the ripple frame under effects, it puts a white small ripple around the border. Is there any way to change the rippled border to a different color? Also, is there any way to make the ripple larger around the border? Thanks for any suggestions you may have. I tried the splatter frame but it wasn't any wider.

Cheryl,<br /><br />It can be done but the effect isn't as good as it can be using other techniques. FWIW, I'd just skip down to the other methods.<br /><br />If you're determined to use the ripple frame, Jay Arraich's site has a tut on how to do it.<br /><br />Look for "How do I make the Frame effects in the Effects palette wider on large images?"  here:<br /><br />http://www.arraich.com/elements/pse_hhow1.htm#resize_frame<br /><br />You won't be able to use the replace color command on it as the command won't work on black or white.  You could copy the enlarged ripple effect into your clipboard then paste it into a solid color fill adjustment layer to colorize it.<br /><br />To do that, you would select<All; Edit<Copy the black and white frame in normal blend mode.  Create the solid color fill adjustment layer.  You will need to hold in the Alt key and click on the adjustment layer mask.  (If done correctly, it the document will go white as you are looking directly at the mask.)  Next, you paste (Edit<Paste) the frame you copied into the mask.  If the frame is reverse of what it should be then invert the mask...control I.  To remove focus from the mask, alt click it again...or just click on another layer in the layers palette. <br /><br />Two quick simple ways to create photograpic edges...<br /><br />Method 1:<br /><br />1. Create a blank layer over your image. <br />2. Use brush tool to paint an edge.  Try one of the brushes from the "Thick Heavy Brush Set".<br /><br />Method 2:<br /><br />1. Create a Solid Color Fill Adjustment layer over your image.<br />2. Turn on your Grid.<br />3. Use Rectangular Marquee to draw out a border selection.<br />4. Fill Selection with Black...(adjustment layer is highlighted in layers palette).<br />5. Deselect before going to step 6...<br />6. To create the edge effects, run filters on the adjustment layer mask.  Note:  Only filters that operate in grayscale will work on a mask.  (Try maybe Splatter and Sprayed Strokes filters.)<br /><br />There are other methods but these two will get you started...and in my opinion produce <b>much</b> better results than the ripple frame.<br /><br />HTH,<br />Terri

  • I tried to use borders, I pick out the cell(s) and the border shows but when i change cells, the border goes away????

Bordersdo not stay when I goon to another cell

To set the border for one, or more, cell(s) you have to:
    - make the selection (of cells)
    - the make a selection from each of the border selection tools
      + The borders to highligh
      + the border style
      + the weight
+ the color (default is gray so you have to select black if you want the dark)

  • How to create cell borders in Numbers?

Trying to create viewable and printable cell borders in a Numbers spreadsheet. Is it possible for Apple to make this simple process any LESS intuitive? These guys are trying to push me back to Excel even tho I hate Microsoft which uses an incredibly simple method for this. I'm sure it's easy with Numbers too. Maybe I need another coffee. Help please.

    Hi Joe,
    1. Correct. I don't see that as a major issue, but you might want to request an 'All Borders option be added to the menu to reduce this to a one step process. The route to send that request directly to Apple is via Provide Numbers Feedback, found in the Numbers menu of numbers '09 (and in the application menu of all or most current Apple applications).
    2. You asked:
"Not to belabor this but I see "Allow/Disallow" Border Selection in the dropdown. Not sure what that is all about."
Something I hadn't tried before in Numbers, but it turned out to be pretty 'intuitive.'
Selecting Allow Border Selection let me select these borders (on the table shown previously) with three clicks (with the addition of a modifier key on the second and third):
Click on the border between C2 and D2. Alll of the border between columns C and D is selected.
Command-click on the border between C7 and C8. All of the border between rows 7 and 8 is selected.
Command-click on the (selected border) between D7 and D8. The segment is removed from the selection.
Now that was 'incredibly easy' and 'intuitive' to me for the reason suggested in my earlier post—although I hadn't previously tried this in Numbers, the behaviour is similar to what I had experienced previously in Pages (and even earlier, if memory serves, in AppleWorks).
After making the selection, I applied an action: set the selected borders to a solid green line, 4 points wide:

  • InDesign Borders

I'm facing a major frustration, and I'm wondering if there's already a solution, or if this needs to be a new feature to be implemented in future InDesign versions.
Adobe Illustrator has a wonderful palette for brushes which can be used as borders for text, etc. However, InDesign seems to be at a standstill in its border palette development since.. well, since the beginning of InDesign. With the exception of some minor corner style developments, designers still seem to be constrained to creating flat, simple multi-lined "Quark" style borders. (e.g.: Thick-Thick, Thick-Thin, etc.) with a propriatory file type: *.inst.
It's impossible to find designers trading *.inst files online, versus the Illustrator Brush file types, *.ai files which can be found in abundance both for free or charge. My theory behind this is that, at some point in the last 10 years, a developer must have intended to expand the border creation abilities in InDesign, but never received any attention and concentrated on other more important features. Well, I'm here to appeal to the developers! It's time! Time, I say!
Now, why would I want the Illustrator Brush/Stroke functionality in InDesign?
Well, it seems like a no-brainer to me; it's a matter of workflow. When I'm designing anything more complicated than a logo or digital illustration, such as a flyer, a book, or any other multi-page piece with text and illustrations, I use InDesign for its pre-press abilities, bleed setups, typography styles, linking, etc. Thus, it just makes sense that if I make a border around a page, I should have a nice, wide variety of borders to choose from, or create ones on the fly from Illustrator *.ai files just like in Illustrator.
This apparent lack of cross-compatibility means in order to achieve anything more than a flat line or easter-egg smiley faces, I'm limited to creating a pre-shaped border Illustrator and placing it into the page. Resizing becomes a disaster as they end up having to be treated as illustrations rather than borders. "Edit original", "Edit original", "Edit original".
During my scouring of the net for a solution, I've found many other designers out there with the same question., some dating all the way back to CS2 days.
Incidentally, while we're at it, heck, I'd love to see the same abilities in Photoshop. I mean why not? It's got vector tools in there as well. There really needs to be more universal palettes in the entire Adobe Creative Suite series. It just makes sense. The unification theory of palettes! Mwahahaha! *clasps his hands* Yes, I ask for too much.. but.. well, it's a good idea, ain't it?
But seriously. It would be of massive use in InDesign; I'm surprised that it doesn't yet exist ten years into InDesign history. Is there a solution at this point? Or is this more of a feature request?
    Cheers.
         —RR—

I know I'm a trifle late as this question is shown as answered. Anyway, a couple of points. I used to use an app called Graphic Type Designer (GTD for short).
    http://www.graphictype.co.uk/using_gtd.php?
It could create borders, corner peices, lines and corner effects using specially designed fonts. It would save these designs in WMF (Windows MetaFile) or plain text formats. I used it a lot with PageMaker and for a short while, InDesign as InDesign barely improves on the border selection that came with PM. I had to stop using it as it does not wotk with 64 bit Windows as although it is a 32 bit app, it retains a 16bit installer.
Anothe alternative I have found today by searching for, and finding some great Illustrator brushes is this site:
    http://www.graphicxtras.com/
There seems to be a hell of a lot of brushes, borders and patterns for Illustrator on this site alone. As bob says, it is probably best (unles they add a ton more borders and effects in InDesign) to use Illustrator's borders and brush libraries to create custom borders. Hope this helps...
