How to convert Comparable to Generics

Question

Hi,
There is a universal comperator.
It is used e.g. in a generic solution for sorting a JTableField.
If the first argument implements the Comparable interface
that implementation should be used.
If not the string representaion of the two arguments should be compared.
new Comparator() {
public compare( Object o1, Object o2 ) {
if( o1 implements Comparable ) {
return ((Comparable) o1).compareTo( o2 );
return o1.toString().compareTo( o2.toString() );
public boolean equals( Object o ) {
return this == o;
If I compile it with Java 5 there are warnings (unchecked/unsafe calls).
I don't know how to convert that code to use Generics,
so that there are no compiler warnings.
Because that comparator should compare all kinds of objects,
the code must be similiar to:
new Comparator<Object>() {
public compare( Object o1, Object o2 ) {
if( o1 implements Comparable<Type of o2> ) {
return ((Comparable<Type of o2>) o1).compareTo( (<Type of o2>) o2 );
return o1.toString().compareTo( o2.toString() );
public boolean equals( Object o ) {
return this == o;
I know, the compiler does not accept this code.
What is the right syntax?
