How to copy music library WITHOUT copying settings

I know that there are some similar questions. I promise that mine has some differences that I have not been able to find elsewhere.
My setup is a house full of laptops that all stream music from a central iTunes installation. For years, we've just used my wife's computer (windows) as the iTunes hub. She makes the most purchases and her computer is in a central point in the house so it's easy for the kids to make purchases on our family's account.
Recently, I bought a mac mini and have been turning it into the home server. I want it to also become the iTunes server. At the same time, I would still like my wife's computer to be where we make our purchases.
Accordingly, I setup rsync on a cron job to sync the entire library from my wife's computer to the mac mini. This way, all purchases are moved to the server within a day. My wife's computer still has the whole library, but she doesn't have to stream it to everyone else now. In fact, I turned off sharing for her iTunes installation.
Everything works except for one small problem. Because iTunes ludicrously saves preferences to the iTunes library, when I copy it over using rsync, it copies my wife's settings including having sharing disabled. I tried writing an apple script that could turn sharing back on, but it appears to not be possible. I thought that maybe I could just copy newly purchased media files over instead, but that loses the playlists.
Basically, I need to be able to buy music and create playlists on my wife's computer and have them sync to the server on the mac mini. My wife's computer should not share its library but the mac mini iTunes should. Any suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated.

Just use this Applescript to launch iTunes on the mini after every Library sync/change. It works for me in iTunes 11 to change the preferences of the target computer*:
tell application "iTunes" to activate
tell application "System Events"
  tell process "iTunes"
  keystroke "," using command down
  delay 1
click button "Sharing" of toolbar 1 of window 1 --"Sharing Preferences"
-- Check the checkbox if it is checked!
if value of checkbox 1 of group 1 of window 1 is 0 then
click checkbox 1 of group 1 of window 1
  end if
click button "OK" of window 1
  end tell
end tell
* after going into System Preferences, Security & Privacy, Privacy tab, and under "Accessibility," checking the box to allow Applescript Editor.app to control the computer
If you've never used applescript before, you can make a single Applescript with both your Unix commands and this, just by prepending the Unix command with "Do shell script" (without quotes) and whatever you would type.

I no longer have the PC that had my CD library and purchased music on iTunes. I am now on another PC and managed to download my purchased iTunes music etc. Is there a way on iTunes that I can get back my old CD music library without ripping again ? Earlier back up is corrupted. Thank you in advance. No longer have my old iPod but getting new one.

If you had the hard drive from the original machine, a backup of the same, an iPod with the media, or a subscription to iTunes Match then there would have been hope, but alas no.

  • How do I show iTunes my WMP music library without duplicating the files

I have kind of a lot of music on my Dell PC... most of my music is MP3 format. I like it that way, sometimes I want to use my old, dumb MP3 player to play music, so I can us my iPhone for more important things like, txting, talking to a person via the 'phone' feature, navigation, etc.... all without interruption to my music play-back.... so, I realized a while ago that whenever I 'show' iTunes music in my existing WMP library, it would duplicate the files and place them inside an iTunes folder, inside the 'My Music' folder. I'm sure there is a way to point my iTunes library to use the existing MP3 library, without it duplicating.... I just haven't been able to figure it out. Now I'm maxing use of 75Gigs of music storage... I think I'm going to have to resolve this duplication issue if I want to keep ripping my CDs onto my HD.  Please don't suggest that I convert everything to iTunes and delete the WMP library.  I'd love to do that, IF iTunes weren't so fat and invassive to run. That program has gotten too fat & slow.... (yeah, I know, WMP is catching up). Often, I just want to add some tracks to a device without the software inventorying my entire device before it will add a cpouple of tracks. For that, (I can't beleive I'm saying this) but I actually will use WMP whenever possible. iTunes is just too big, slow & bossy. So, can anyone help me out here? How do I get i-Tunes to see & use my WMP library w/out duplicating the files... just using the "My Music" folder as is? I'm sure someone told me that was possible.  Many thanks!

  • How to put music library files onto new iPhone 6 with iTunes

I set up my new iPhone 6 on my Macbook Pro for backup to the cloud using wi fi. I also set it up as a phone, not as an ipod. But when I synced the phone, no music library files copied onto the phone, which has 128 gigs, only reference graphics showing an iCloud icon, so I have to play everything by streaming from a hotspot or using cellular data.  How do I just put the music library on the phone?

Thanks!  Fascinating, but playing the very same files for the first time through my car's stereo system, the volume required was much lower and the sound was much better. I think the old 4s must have been deteriorating, or the new 6 is far more powerful and better.

  • Two users, same pc, how 2 transfer music library from 1 itunes 2 another

both my wife and i have itunes on the same pc but i have an extensive library of music, how can i transfer all my music from my itunes into hers using ipod if needed

You don't say how your computer is set up, I'm presuming two separate Windows user accounts. You could do a couple of things, one is simply share your current library and you'll find a guide here:"How to share music between different accounts on a single computer" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195
Or if you prefer separate libraries, you could use your iPod to move a copy of your iTunes folder into the other account, the guide for that is here:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173-en

  • How to Move Music Library from one external HD to another

I had about 60GB of music on an external hard drive, nicely organized and "linked to" from iTunes (just upgraded to version 5). I recently purchased a larger external hard drive and basically copied the contents of my older external drive to the new one, preserving all folder structures from the root of the drives down (but the name of the drive itself is different.) I was hoping I could just do a search/replace of the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file in my Music/iTunes folder, to replace the name of the old drive (volume) with the new one. I did, and iTunes launches fine, preserving my playlists, song ratings, etc... but whenever I try to play any of the songs, it says it can't find it (I can manually point iTunes to it, but I don't want to do that for 15,000 songs...) Strange thing, though, is that if I quit out of iTunes and re-open the Library XML file, all the paths have been reset to their original location!! What am I missing? Thanks in advance,
    Jesse

I just want to add that the iTunes folder (with the library xml file and such) is on my local hard drive, in the typical Music/iTunes location. I don't want to simply re-import the songs 'cuz I'd lose playlist contents and ratings, and I don't want to "consolidate" the library because I want to keep my music folders and filenames as I currently have them. Basically, I just want iTunes to realize the songs have simply changed location from one external drive to another... thanks again.

  • How to sync music library to a new computer after my old one crashed

    Hi scotttwoodward1985,
I'm sorry to hear that your computer crashed--that's never any fun. You definitely may download Acrobat and reinstall it. You can download it from this page: Download Acrobat products | Standard, Pro | XI, X.
Please let us know how it goes.

  • How to restore music library from match

My music library was stored on an external WD hard drive.  It recently crashed and I was only able to recover a portion of my music files.  I have iMatch, and I can download all my previous music to my iPhone using this service, however I do not know how or if I can download copies of the music files in order to recreate my library.  At the moment, on my Windows8 laptop, when I open iTunes, it states it cannot locate the music file, do I want to locate it.    The "cloud" symbol next to the song states there was an error uploading to the cloud.   Is there a way to recover my music files with iMatch?  and why does my iPhone not show the same "error" that the iTunes applications shows on my laptop?   I have a feeling I will have to reburn the couple hundred CDs I have.

To download more than one track at at time highlight the tracks you want to download, right-click and choose "download." However, this is not the most efficient way to restore an iTunes library. You should restore your personal data from the backups you make to an external HDD. You do make backups, don't you?

  • Computer crashed -- ITunes files gone -- How to restore music library???

Computer has crashed, and my Itunes library was not backed up. Can the music files be transferred from the Ipod to the computer to recreate the library??

Ok, first of all, now is the time to develop a back-up strategy, because iPods and PC's do crash from time to time. You invest a lot of time and money into your music library, why not on a back up strategy? I recommend either investing in an External Hard drive. They frequently are on sale, especially this time of year with the holidays. Or, you could back up your library by switching the burning mode into Data CD and burn Data CD's or DVD's of your library. I would really recommend having your library backed up in a couple ways.
Ok, so there are freeware programs and rather cheap third party programs that will allow you to rip your iPod library onto your PC. Try YamiPod, CopyPod, iPod Transfer or one of the plethora of programs out there. YamiPod is free and quite good, from what I hear. Good Luck and back up your library often.

  • How to restore Music Library after update to iTunes 11?

    Hi guys.
Since updating to iTunes 11, my Music Library isn't what it should be. I've noticed that some songs have moved from their albums to completely new ones, and others songs have gone missing entirely.
When I look in the actual Music Library folder, the songs and albums in question aren't organised anything like they are in iTunes, which makes tracking the missing songs down problematic.
I'm in America at the minute, but I intend using Time Machine to restore things, once I return to England.
Any idea what happened, or a better way of fixing the problem?

Does anyone have any advice? I'm in complete limbo until this is resolved.
