How to correct "combing" of interlaced video?

Hi folks!
I'm working on a kind of animated/composited segment where I've reduced (slightly) the size of the video picture and animated it across the screen, left to right. The animation works fine, but I'm seeing the "comb" effect on both the left and right sides of the video (as it moves across the screen). I tried de-interlacing, but it didn't seem to work. The original footage is interlaced, and the final product is going on DVD (it's a wedding video).
Is the any way I can get rid of that annoying "comb" look?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Vic

Computers often display the combing effect but interlaced footage looks fine when viewed on a display/tv designed to work with interlacing.
Try a short test DVD, it may be OK.
Also knowing exact details about the type of footage you are editing with and the Sequence properties will help.

  • How to export h.264 interlaced video??

    hi, my situation is the following: i have a full hd (1920x1080i50) camcorder which gives me just interlaced video clips with 50 half frames per second in AVCHD. i dont want to deinterlace the material, cause it taks too much time, the quality looses and the filesize is doubled (if i want to keep every frame).
    i want to cut it with imovie 08 and then export it back into h.264 in interlaced format. (because i want to burn it to a data-dvd and play it in a playstation3. and h.264 is the only full hd format, which the ps3 is able to play, i think).
    but in the export preferences i cannot choose between the options "interlaced" or "progressive". and the export with quicktime as h.264 or mpeg-4 is always in progressive mode, ignoring the interlaced material. the result is a progressive video with 25 full frames per second showing 2 half frames mixed together in one frame with the typical "interlaced-lines-error" or in germany we are talking about the "picket-fence-effect". it seemes that imovie does not identyfy the interlaced video automatically.
    the imported videos from the camera are definately imported by imovie as interlaced video. i can check it in the quicktime player by turning on the "deinterlace"-option. quicktime playes the video deinterlaced, the "picket-fence-effect" dissapears. if i do it with a exported h.264 videofile from imovie, nothing happens when i turn the "deinterlace"-option on. the "picket-fence-effect" does not dissapear.
    today i already loaded the quicktime update, but i still can not export in mpeg4/h264 interlace.
    can somebody help me?? i spent already several days with exporting, searching the internet and burning dvd-rs.
    thanks

    You should give MPEG Streamclip a try:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
    In this program, interlace/deinterlace is an option for MPEG-4 conversions, although I haven't used it myself.

  • How to achieve good non-interlaced video using compressor (newbie question)

    Dear all,
    I am completely at sea but I know that I have to use the "none" setting for the field order and cannot for the life of me work this out.
    Now- I usually export direct from Final Cut Pro (H.264, best quality etc etc) but this time the exported QT file just will not de-interlace (not my footage but I have to deliver the edit), come **** or high water.
    So- a kind soul said to use Compressor... And to not use any field ordering.
    But HOW? I watched videos, sought to use the instructions given me here but am still totally lost.
    What I did:
    1. Launched Compressor,
    2. Dragged in the self-contained reference QT file from my desktop,
    3. Picked a setting (H.264 which has field reordering ON by default),
    4. Dropped the "setting" into the blue field to right of clip thumb,
    5. Double-clicked the "setting" and then-
    6. picked the "Encoder" button, as instructed but cannot change the Field Order.
    Because Compressor is completely new to me I don't know if I ought to NOT pick a setting until I have it how I want it, saved it as a "custom setting" and THEN bring it into the project or if I am to do it once brought in to the project. Either way- how to change the field order to "none". Or should I pick a de-interlace filter? Just that I have been looking and testing and nothing I do creates a de-interlaced final file.
    All the tutorial videos I have watched (erm- about 5 now) go over exporting and how to pick your settings from those which exist but what I need to know is how to change a setting to suit (ie get rid of the evil interlacing).
    I am hoping someone here can give me a very simple step by step or point me in the direction of one.

    Let me see if I can wrap my head around what you're trying to do. You started with an HD timeline 1280 x 720 (16:9). Into this you want to add your SD PAL clips, shrunk down for a picture in picture effect (a completely different concept from multicam.) But your shrunk down clips have nasty interlacing, and the one clip which was meant to be full frame looks like rubbish, right? Sorry but there's no way to blow a clip up 180% and have it look even halfway decent. At least not in FCP. Compressor has an upscale algorithm, available in the same Frame Controls tab where you did the de-interlacing, which can give you somewhat better results. There's also a plug-in from Red Giant called Instant HD which may or may not yield better results than Compressor.
    Here's where you went wrong. The clips to be shrunk should have been deinterlaced before bringing them into FCP, and into your sequence. Go ahead and do this, using the ProRes 422 setting, with the deinterlacing technique from before.
    Your sequence in FCP is fine, except that you want to change its compressor to ProRes 422 so that it matches your newly imported de-interlaced clips.
    You want to de-interlace your P2 1080i clips beforehand as well. The other change to make to your sequence is to change Field Dominance to None.
    If you've already finished your edit, you can still do all of the de-interlacing, outputting all of the results to a new folder. But you have to do every source clip in its entirety if you want to re-link to retain your edit.
    When Compressor's done - this will probably take all night - open your FCP project, select all the source clips, right-click and choose Reconnect Media. Locate the newly de-interlaced ProRes clips and Connect.
    Then you only need to export your sequence as a Quicktime Movie, Current Settings, Self-contained. This will give you a pristine master which will play fine on your computer, and from which you may then use Compressor to create a web or dvd version as needed.

  • IMovie: I uploaded HDV video from a Canon HV20 and then to YouTube. The video and the audio are out of sync. The audio seems to precede the video by a tiny bit which is disconcerting. Any recommendations about how to correct this? Thank you.

    I downloaded video via iMovie from my Canon HV20. The video was in HDV. I then published it to YouTube and Vimeo and in both cases, the audio is out of sync: the video precedes the audio by a fraction of a second. The original is fine as viewed in the camera.
    Any suggestions as to why and how to correct it?

  • How to Correctly update Macbook Pro's video chip drivers

    I am currently using Boot Camp with Windows 7 64 Bit on my MBP Early 2011. My question is how can you successfully update the video chip drivers when using windows 7? When I try to install drivers the AMD updater can not recognize my video card. But my games have made it clear that I am not running the most recent drivers

    fmurry925, unfortunately, the "normal" way of updating video drivers doesn't apply to Boot Camp installations. For some reason, Apple uses a slightly customized video chip in MBP (ie mine is an nVidia 320M, which doesn't exist in any non-Apple computer. Well, there's one.)
    This means that the standard nVidia driver set doesn't recognize this chip. And I suspect it's the same for your computer. So you're stuck with using the drivers available from Apple, which are updated much less frequently than the generic drivers.
    There are workarounds for this, consisting of "modding" your INF to allow the generic drivers to work for you. But I did some searching, and it seems that your particular chip, which is "switchable" between the Radeon and the Intel graphics, doesn't have a modded INF available. Yet. So, unless someone else knows of a solution, you might be stuck with the Apple-supplied drivers for a while.

    You realize this has been asked 100s of times, right?
    Don't use Auto-detect. Download the driver. Unzip. Uninstall Apple gpu driver. Run Driver Sweeper 3.x maybe.
    You may be able to install. If not, use Device Manager to update and find the driver you unzipped.

  • Mice Teeth! Interlaced video!

    I record on PAL 720X576 (16:9). I am seeing Mice Teeth as a result of Interlaced video. I have the following questions about this.
    1. If I want to output to DVD for viewing on TV, should I be deinterlacing the video while editing?
    2. Why don't I see any improvement after using Imovie>share>Export using Quicktime> options>Size>Deinterlace source video?
    3. What is the best way to edit/export so that I can watch the video on bothTV and computer monitors?
    4. why don't I see video's shot in 16:9 in the correct aspect ratio?

    iMovie 9 uses single-field processing when exporting, and discards every other frame unless you take some steps to get it to work.

  • Interpret interlaced video with 2:2 telecine pulldown as true progressive?

    Hope my title makes sense. Not sure how well I will be able to explain.
    We have interlaced video files from film telecine. The telecine transfer were made at 25fps as the machines are PAL and this allows us to capture each descrete film frame within the 2 interlaced video fields. I believe this is called 2:2 pulldown. 2 fields for every film frame. The film is captured to V210 10-bit uncompressed blackmagic .avi files. We have films intended to be played back at anything from 12fps to 25fps. Everything is captured at 25fps as the only other available speed is 16 2/3rds fps which creates duplicated fields (3:2) and only works for 16fps content.
    So, even though the video file is interlaced (top field first) by combining the fields you get a progressive film frame. Is there anyway to tell Premiere to interpet this footage as progressive without dumping half the fields? As far as I am aware if I work with a progressive sequence or interpret the footage as progressive Premiere will retain the dominant fields and interpolate the rest. I understand this for interlaced content where each field is from a different temporall moment but we actually have the ptrogressive frames just stored as 2 fields.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks

    Premiere Pro will automatically interpret footage that is shot as progressive-as-interlaced, like 25p or 30p, but that (to my knowledge) only works correctly with footage that is from a camcorder. That's because the file is flagged in such a manner that Premiere Pro knows to put the interlaced fields in the correct order for progressive display. I work with 480/30p and 1080/30p footage (which are both interlaced as shot) frequently, and Premiere Pro does things correctly there.
    However, I think it will be a different matter in your case, unless the captures are being flagged as they are created. What does Premiere Pro say that the clips' field order (or lack thereof) is when imported? As you've surmised, if this isn't the case, telling Premiere Pro to interpret the footage as progressive is likely going to result in some unwanted artifacts. You could probably test this by importing two instances of your clip, interpreting one as progressive, and then placing them in a progressive sequence (one on top of the other) and toggling visibility between the tracks. You should quickly see if it's having the desired effect or... something else. Instinct tells me that Premiere Pro won't handle this correctly, however.
    This might be a job for After Effects, which is a certain degree smarter and more capable of interpreting such things. I'm not exactly sure how to handle it there, but the After Effects forum might be the best place to ask.

  • How do I output the smoothest video when changing or mixing frame rates from the original footage?

    I have been experimenting with various Media Encoder settings, and wondered if there was anything else I can try to get the smoothest video output possible, especially when changing frame rate and possibly resolution.  For clarification, let me start from the beginning and explain what I'm doing and what I've tried so far.  I'll try to be as brief as possible, but if I do go into too much detail, I apologize.
    My original footage is AVCHD 1080p - 60fps.  (my camera only does 60fps...specifically 59.94fps)  We're not talking interlaced video here, I'm staying away from that.  This is definitely full frame, progressive video at 60 frames (not fields) per second.  My output will ultimately be for the web.  I have been keeping my output codec (H.264) and bit-rate (VBR 2-pass, relatively high-bitrate) consistent, and have been trying numerous output options and even sequence settings to see what would yield the best results.  I am using Premiere Pro CS5.5 along with Media Encoder.  Here's what I've done and the results I've observed:
    1.  I created a sequence with 1080p - 59.94fps settings to match my original footage.  I then output both 1080p and 720p versions at 59.94fps, and at 29.97fps.  The 59.94fps output files looked absolutely great, as would be expected.  Extremely smooth.  The 29.97fps output files were generally smooth, but not near as smooth as the 59.94fps.  This is expected since it's half the frame rate as my original footage.  However, my question is this:  What exactly is Media Encoder doing when "down converting" from 60p to 30p?  From a technical stand point, is it dropping every other frame?  I'm just curious to understand exactly what it does.  I tried the Frame Blending option as well, and that only yielded a bit more blur to the images which wasn't desirable for any of the output files.
    2.  Just to see what would happen, I created a sequence with 1080p - 29.97 settings.  I then output both 1080p and 720p versions at 29.97fps.  The video was much more choppy in these cases, even with Frame Blending on.  Now, I know not matching my sequence settings with my original media isn't ideal, but I again just want to understand why this yields less smooth video than the 29.97fps options above.  Why does cutting the sequence settings frame rate in half from the original, then outputting the same frame rate as the sequence yield video that is not as smooth?
    3.  Next, I wanted to try mixing frame rates to see how Premiere and Media Encoder handled the footage and output files.  Premiere handled it great, no issues there.  However, I had some interesting things happen when I output the files.  Here's what I did:  I created a sequence with 1080p - 59.94fps to match my original footage.  Then I took the same exact footage that was in my sequence, copied it in my project panel and interpreted it at both 23.976 and 29.97 fps, yielding slow motion video.  The slow motion video looked great in Premiere, so I went ahead and just added it to my sequences, along with the original 59.94 footage.  I also created separate sequences for the 29.97 and 23.976 footage respectively, each with matching sequence settings, then added a nested sequence to another original footage sequence (with 59.94fps sequence settings) to see which yielded the best results.  Basically, I'm trying to output 59.94fps that match my original footage, but also throw in some slow motion footage at different framerates.  I'll explain my results in a moment as they are a bit convoluted, however, here is my question:  When mixing frame rates and trying to output the smoothest video, am I going about this the right way?  I would assume you would use your sequence settings that match the original footage (which is what the majority of the footage will be), then bring in a nested sequence for the slow motion (as oppose to just dropping the slow motion video directly into my main sequence), and then output to the same frame rate of the majority of the footage, in this case 59.94fps. Is there a better workflow for this?
    The results to #3 above were as follows.  Initially, it looked like it didn't matter if I nested the slow motion sequence into my main sequence, or simply dropped the actual slow motion video into my original 59.94fps sequence.  It seemed to produce smooth results either way.  Frame Blending blurred the video a bit, but didn't seem to make much difference, and quite honestly I like the footage without Frame Blending in general.  However, when I closed down Premiere, and opened the output files later (opening in Quicktime), the footage looked choppy.  In fact, it would go from choppy to smooth and back, almost like it had an irregular cadence (don't know if I'm using "cadence" in the right context here).  I would then open up Premiere again, import the output footage into my project panel, and play the footage in Premiere, and it would play back smooth again. Is this a Quicktime issue?  I was playing 1080p 59.94fps files when this happened, so maybe it's just because it's a large file.  Doesn't seem to have issues with the 720p files I created.  But it sure threw me off with my testing because I then started second guessing the settings I was using.  My iMac is the latest 2011 model with plenty of RAM, so I wouldn't think it's the computer.  Thoughts?
    4.  Next, I noticed on ALL my output files (again, using the H.264 codec from Media Encoder) that the color of my video seemed to flatten quite a bit.  It seems that the original footage has more contrast and saturation than the output files.  I figured maybe this was just how it was, but when I re-imported the output files back into Premiere, they looked IDENTICAL to the original footage.  And in Media Encoder's Source/Output windows, I don't see any difference there either. Is Quicktime again the culprit here, doing some odd things to the color of my videos?
    5.  Regarding Frame Blending, when is the best situation to enable this option in Media Encoder?  I've read it is when mixing frame rates, but I honestly didn't see too much of a change except for a bit more blur, which I didn't care for.
    6.  Lastly, my conclusion is that 60fps yields the smoothest video, which is an obvious conclusion.  However, I know that 60fps isn't the best or easiet frame rate for web delivery.  It seems 30p is more the standard.  Are there any integrated web players that would play 60fps?  Can you get 60fps video on YouTube/Vimeo?  If yes to any of these questions, can they do 720p and 1080p at 60fps?
    Those are all my questions.  I hope I am clear enough without being overly wordy and hopefully I didn't put too many questions into one post.  Thanks in advance for any insight, I really appreciate it.

    Did you ever figure out which output worked the best? I have the same original footage; trying to determine the best output settings to make a dvd for tv.
    thanks!

  • HELP - Interlaced video playback stuttering!!

    Hi all,
    I'm having problems with Quicktime playback of Interlaced video. For testing purposes, I'm playing back a PAL 20 second h.264 clip on a secondary display attached to my MacBookPro with the Apple DVI-S-Video adaptor (set to 720x576 interlaced PAL 50Hz).
    When I play the clip, it stutters/flickers (almost like the fields are inverted?).. If I pause then play the movie repeatedly (i.e : stop/start with the spacebar) the problem seems to rectify itself for a few minutes and everything runs smoothly, then it happens again, until I pause/play again.
    I'm on Leopard with the latest updates.. I desperately need to find a fix for this ASAP as I have a tradeshow install in a couple of days time.. Any help would me most appreciated.
    Thx

    I've never tried how well interlaced material transfers from the Mac directly to an interlaced TV...
    But I do know that feeding interlaced .dv from iMovie (in passthrough-to-camcorder mode) via FW a a TV is fine. Or burn it to avideo-DVD via iDVD and use a standalone DVD player to present it.
    Maybe H.264 sometimes loses its field sync? Could you use brute force and deinterlace it and live with the less smooth movements of progressive video?

  • How to swap Effects on a video processor?

    I have written a JMF based program that plays a video and applies an effect (I have written) to it. The code works just fine, but now I want to add the ability to add or swap other effects. The problem is I can't figure out how to correctly do this, and can't find any examples to model. Here's some of the relevant code:
         MediaLocator locator = new MediaLocator(videoFile);
         try {
              processor = Manager.createProcessor(locator);
              } catch (NoProcessorException e) {
                   System.out.println(e);
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   System.out.println(e);
         processor.addControllerListener(this);
         processor.configure();
         public void controllerUpdate(ControllerEvent event) {
              processor = (Processor) event.getSourceController();
              if (event instanceof ConfigureCompleteEvent) {
                   processor.setContentDescriptor(null);
                   TrackControl[] controls = processor.getTrackControls();
                   for (int i = 0; i < controls.length; i++) {
                        if (controls.getFormat() instanceof VideoFormat) {
                             videoTrack = controls[i];
                        else
                             controls[i].setFormat(new AudioFormat(AudioFormat.LINEAR));
                        try {
                             Codec codec[] = { new BorderEffect() };
                             videoTrack.setCodecChain(codec);
                        } catch (UnsupportedPlugInException e) {
                             System.err.println(e);
                   processor.prefetch();
                   processor.start();
              } else if (event instanceof RealizeCompleteEvent){
                   SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new AddComponentsThread());
              } else if (event instanceof EndOfMediaEvent) {
                   processor.setMediaTime(new Time(0));
                   processor.start();
         If I change the line Codec codec[] = { new BorderEffect() };toCodec codec[] = { new ConvolveEffect() };it works fine with the new convolve. Alternately if I change it to:Codec codec[] = { new BorderEffect(), new ConvolveEffect() };the video gets both effects added. But so far I haven't been able to react to a user button click to change from one effect to the other.
    First I tried to call processor.removeControllerListener() and processor.stop(), call a method to change the codec referenced just above and then call processor.addControllerListener(this) and processor.configure() all over again. This didn't work.
    After a bit of reading I have think there are two other tactics:
    *(1)* use a PluginManager and call addPlugin() or removePlugin() to enable / disable. I can't find any examples of using a PluginManager and some things aren't clear. Like - one you call addPlugin() do you still need the lines about new codec, setCodecChain() etc?
    *(2)* chain processors together to add effects, remove a processor from the chain to remove effects. The DataOutput of a processor allows the output of one to be fed to the input of another.
    I haven't been able to get any of these methods to work so far. Any ideas on what is the proper way to swap in/out effects?

    No ideas yet?
    After trying some more things I have my program working ... well working in that I can apply different effects, but I think it is a pretty ugly solution. Here is a representative code snippet:
          if (ae.getActionCommand().equalsIgnoreCase("GREYSCALE")) {
                   processor.stop();
                   removeComponents();
                   processor.removeControllerListener(this);
                   try {
                        processor = Manager.createProcessor(locator);
                   } catch (NoProcessorException npe) {
                        System.out.println("No Processor Exception");
                   } catch (IOException ioe) {
                        System.out.println("IO error creating player");
                   setCodec("GREYSCALE");
                   processor.addControllerListener(this);
                   processor.configure();
              }I wrote a custom method removeComponents() which calls removeAll() on the JPanel containing the video and controls to essentially wipe them out. Then remove the ControllerListener and create a whole new processor. (THIS does not seem to be an elegant or correct way of doing things!) Another custom method setCodec() is used to specify which codec to use, a ControllerListener is added and the new processor is configured.
    This DOES work, but I am quite sure it isn't the best or most elegant way of doing things. Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Why does interlaced video have vertical black bars?

    Despite looking all over the internet and asking video editors I know, I've never yet found a satisfactory answer to this question:
    When I bring DV PAL footage into my Mac, why are there always very thin black vertical bars on each side?  And why is the image being squeezed slightly?
    I think it may have something to do with interlacing.
    If you look at my screenshot here.
    You can see that the top image (QuickTime 7 Player) exhibits the issue I'm talking about (the prescene of combing on the man shows this is interlaced).
    But the black bars have disappeared in the bottom image (QuickTIme Player X) - and you can see that it looks slightly horizontally stretched by comparison. I'm guessing this is something to do with the fact that QuickTime Player X DE-interlaces video.
    The question remains though... what is it about interlacing that introduces black bars and an incorrect aspect ratio??

    If you are ripping "standard" format content (4x3 ratio) then it will just appear like that on a widescreen TV. You shouldn't have that problem if you're ripping widescreen content (16x9 ratio).

    Because of different local copyright laws and licensing you cannot keep everything exactly the same except for iCloud, which is not affected. You will have to create a new Apple ID for use on the UK iTunes Store with a form of payment drawn on a local bank and an address in the UK. As long as you have downloaded all your purchases and the computer is still authorized to play all protected video content that won't change, however Apps may give you trouble when updating because once associated with an Apple ID you can only switch between stores every 90 days.
    As for iTunes Match you must contact Australian iTunes Store support to cancel the subscription and you will have to resubscribe on the UK store.
