Don't waste your time trying to create databases. There are many good, free, databases already available. MySQL and Postgresql are just a couple that come to mind.

How to find current init.ora file

I have 2 issues:
Issue 1:--
I have some 4-5 init.ora file which are created by some other user and facing difficulties to find exact init.ora which is used by my oracle 9.2 database. same thing for spfile.
Is there any way so that i can find the currently use init.ora file?
Issue 2:
I want to change init.ora file parameters for the oracle9.2(siebel).
Presently default it is showing optimizer_mode=CHOOSE
I have tried to change to RULE but not refelecting after database restart.
at session level i can modify but i want permanent change and for thius i tried with
user SYS as SYSDBA with
ALTER SYSTEM SET optimizer_mode=RULE;
but getting following Oracle erroe message
ORA-02096 specified initialization parameter is not modifiable with this option
Cause: Though the initialization parameter is modifiable, it cannot be modified using the specified command.
Action: Check the Oracle9i Database Administrator's Guide for information about under what scope the parameter may be modified

As far as I know, there's no possible way to find out which parameter file was used to start instance. And, even if it was, I don't really see much sense in it because parameter file is a client-side file, and usually it required to start up Oracle instance remotely.
In principle, parameter files are obsolete beasts, consider using server parameter file (SPFILE) instead. And, for SPFILE, it's pretty easy to find out its location:
SQL> show parameter pfile
NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
spfile                               string      %ORACLE_HOME%\DATABASE\SPFILE%
                                                 ORACLE_SID%.ORAAs for your ORA-02096 error, you have two opportunities to resolve it.
If you decided to use SPFILE, create one (for example, using CREATE SPFILE FROM PFILE command), start your instance with SPFILE then issue:
ALTER SYSTEM SET optimizer_mode=RULE SCOPE = SPFILE;and bounce your instance.
If you still wish to use old-style parameter file, you have to add corresponding setting into that file manually (it's a plain text file in fact) and restart instance.

for asm you can connect as asmcmd (change ORACLE_SID/HOME first) and copy controlfile (don'r forget, shutdown, modified init.ora, and startup with init.ora):
ASMCMD> cp <controlfile at disk> <controlfile at asm>
i.e.:
ASMCMD> cp '/tmp/control01.ctl' '+DATA/controlfile/control01.ctl';

i'm running 9.02 on windows 2000. How do i find out which init ora file the start services is picking up. I looked it up in the registry and it wasn't obvious.

All oracle parameters registry related can be found in the book for window. If you don't see the init which is pointing to it is going to the default. Look in ORACLE_HOME\database

Yeah, it depends and you will need to adjust thoses parameters during the "life" of the database.
I give you some of my thoughts (that's just thoughts, not a rule => there is no perfect rule) :
500 users = Unix box i guess so :
If MTS (dont think u need MTS for 500 users) => SGA = 75% of the RAM of the server
If NOT MTS (dedicated processes) => SGA = 50% of the RAM
Say 2GB of RAM on no MTS :
buffer cache = 900 MB
shared pool = 100MB to 200 MB
sort_area_size = 256KB
something like 50 to 100 RBS (depends on how many users are connected simultaneously)
for the users which will not do some OLTP operations, you should make few BIG RBS and assign their transactions to them. for thoses users, you probably need a bigger sort_area_size.
all the tablespaces LOCALLY MANAGED
backup with RMAN

How to establish a single init.ora file for 3 node RAC under ASM

All,
Our environment is a combination of several different memory sized SUN machines (V880, V490 & 250R).
Setting up a single init.ora file that encompasses each of the nodes memory into the SGA sizing is our desired setup.
Though we have established the file, the question is getting each NODE on the RAC to use that single parameter
file to start its database instead of taking the default init.ora file in the default (asm/dbs) directory.
As we have performed fail-over testing, upon the restart of instances they have restarted with wrong memory
definitions that have hung the nodes when it took more memory then what was available and swap space began
to grow.
Steps to configure and enable this process is what I am looking for.

Here's what we do. Not sure if it is relevant to your situation ...
(on each node)

Which init.ora file in use?

I found init.ora in a couple places.
How do I determine which init.ora file my oracle is using?
Is there a sqlplus command to fine the init.ora in use?
So far, I found them here:
c:\oracle11g\dbs\init.ora

Which one is active?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The one that's there in the DBS folder is the first one that is going to be looked upon by Oracle when it will try to start the instance. The one in the $OH/dbs/ is going to be active. The other location would not have the pfile all the time. Also, spfile should be used if you are in 11g. Why you areusing pfile instead of it?

9.0.1 create database using dbca fails

Solaris 8, 64-bit SPARC, 528mb RAM, 2 SCSI 9gig. Development box with no other users/processes running except Sendmail.
Installed Oracle 9.0.1 on machine from CDs with no problems, Attempting to create database using Database Configuration Assistant.
Creating 'general purpose' database using dbca with generally default parameters. Progress bar gets to 50% done, "creating & starting instance" is checked in progress window.
CPU utilization goes to 100% and nothing happens for hours. Eventually have to cancel dbca. No control files or init.ora created, (pfile directory is empty) there are a bunch of oracle processes left running which have to be killed.
I've tried this several times, moved stuff to different drives and/or filesystems, no luck. Have 5 gig available on /u01 where the database should install, and 8 gig available on /u02 where the .dbf's go.
If I had any hair left, I'd pull it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am getting this same problem: The DBCA gets to the point where it is installing the database and starting the instance (it says 51% of the way through), and then it just sits there doing nothing. I noticed when I installed Oracle (9.2.0) when it got to the point of the configuration assistants, there was mention of a listener not being able to start and the installer assuming it was already started (the listener that is). When the DBCA started right after, it stalled out at 51%.
I aleady had the Sun JDK installed, but am assuming this is not the issue since the install got that far. Can someone please advise a course of action so that I can trouble shoot this? I am very very new to this side of Oracle. Any assistance is greatly appreciated and will be passed along to others in turn.

Login as DBA (SYSTEM or SYS for ex.) in SQL*Plus and run this command:
SELECT *
FROM dba_sys_privs
WHERE grantee = 'USERNAME'
AND PRIVILEGE = 'CREATE DATABASE LINK'
Change the USERNAME by the USER you're trying to create the database link from. (CAPITALS!)

Steps to create database with ASM.
1.Install oracle binary with active CRS(For single node installation CRS is activated when you run root.sh) .
2.Create disk without file ssytem.
3.Assign disk to raw .
4.Change owner and permission to raw devices.
5.Configure ASM manually or USing DBCA.
Manually ASM Configuration.
a.Create initialization parameter file and password file.
b.Mandatory parameter is "instance_type=asm" as per your need configure rest of parameter like db_cache_size,large_pool_size,processes,remote_login_passwordfile,shared_pool_size etc..
c.To discover disk configure "asm_diskstring=/dev/raw/raw*"
Using DBCA to configure ASM.
1.In storage type section choose ASM.It will ask for password of sysdba in 10g.
2.ASM configuration window will open -> here it create disk group -> it shows all available ASM candidate disk automatical -> choose normal redundancy,external redundancy or high redundancy.
ASM disk also can be conbfigured with ASMLIB .
If ASM disk is configured you can start asm instance in nomount state and query to v$asm_disk to see all candidate disk.V$asm_disk only shows disk which is configured in asm_diskstrings.

are you trying to use oracle lite just as a database? it is normally used as part of a data synchronisation from a server, replicating snapshots to create the database and tables on the client.
PL/SQL format triggers are not supported in the oracle lite client. Java stored procedures are, but you would need to build the table interactions
