How to define ASM failure groups!

Hi all,
I have 4 disk on both disk controller
SATA controller
ASMDISKO1
ASMDISKP1
SCSI controller
ASMDISKR1
ASMDISKS1
I created diskgroup test as below:
CREATE DISKGROUP TEST EXTERNAL REDUNDANCY
FAILGROUP controller1 DISK 'ORCL:ASMDISKO1', 'ORCL:ASMDISKP1',
FAILGROUP controller2 DISK 'ORCL:ASMDISKR1', 'ORCL:ASMDISKS1';
but i got this error:
ERROR at line 2:
ORA-15106: missing or invalid operating system disk locator string
Please help!
Thank you!

What does controller1 means and where can i find it? do i need to put in the create diskgroup like the example? its a failgroup name since we're creating DG with normal redundancy, after creating it you can find detail on this from v$asm_disk
see below example.
creating diskgroup with NORMAL REDUNDANCY with 2 disk (68gb each)

  • Create ASM Failure Group via dbca

I am not sure how to configure a Failure Group in ASM.
    I am not using asmlib.
So I start dbca - choose configure ASM
    Create Diskgroup --> Data
select my 2 raw devices ( which are on 2 storages)
    I select normal redundancy;
Disk Path ASM Name Failure Group
    /dev/raw/raw4 Data1 FG1_Data
    /dev/raw/raw5 Data2 FG2_Data
Is this enough ? Or is there anything else needed for a functional failure group ?
Does that mean, when one storage (with disk Data2) is switched off - that my instance will survive and is still able to write data on the diskgroup ?

    What is your oracle version?

    Hello everyone,
    on 10204,
currently my database uses ASM & is of externel redundancy.
I've to mirror the entire set of disks to another set of disks.
I'm planning to use ASM failure groups for that.
can anybody provide useful links for that feature. Can't get much idea from oracle doc

  • ASM Failure Groups and Disk Controllers

    Hey guys,
I understand that it's considered a good idea to set different Failure Groups for disks which could fail at the same time because they share hardware, For example, disks that share the same disk controller.
Now, my question might be silly but I don't understand why we would configure multiple disks with the same disk controller.
    Thank you,
    Jerry.

    Hi Jerry,
    Your question is not silly.
Usually you have one or more disk controllers in a system
Each controller can handle up to x disks ( in the past this was 15, don't know if this still is )
If you wanted to be redundant, like with RAID1 ( mirrorring ) configurations a system was usually configured to have an even amount of disks
    spread evenly over two controllers.
This then covered disk-failure and controller failure, as each logical disk in the mirror-set is accessible over two controllers and consists of -at least - two disks.
In ASM you would configure the main diskgroup on the first set of disks on the first controller.
The failure group would then be configured on the second set of disks on the second controller.
In the SAN world, with ASM using Host Based Mirroring, the Failure group can also be a diskset on a totally different storage-server
Edit: Totally forgot: More disks on one controller mean more parallel access to your data, as you can read all seperate disk seperately.
In the current days with the enormous disks it is quite easy to configure just one disk in your system, but that will bring you quite easy huge performance problems

  • How to Define Additional Incompatiblity Groups and Buckets

How do I define additional incompatiblity groups and buckets? I added them to the Advanced Pricing Lookups screen, but what is the next step?

The problem is that my new Incompatibility Level (4) is not working the same way as Levels 1-3. Anything I put in Level 4, acts like Level 1.
I did notice that the Lookup code I used is in a slightly different format as the seeded codes. Could this be the problem? The seeded codes are LVL 1, LVL 2, LVL 3. My new code is LVL4 (no space).

  • How to define Legislative Data group in HCM Extract?

    HI All,
Can you please share the steps to define Legislative data group in HCM Extract ? During creation of HCM extract, I didn't find any option to define the Legislative data group , so my HCM Extract is created without having the Legislative data group and for that reason, I am not able to use extract rule Fast Formula (under a Legislative data group) in HCM Extract.
Any suggestion would be helpful to me.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Sharmistha

    Hi Sharmistha,
Once the extract is created there is no ability to add the LDG. A workaround i to export the extract and import it back inot9 the application - the import screen has LDG field.

  • How to define a mail group email address?

    Hi,
I have defined several groups and would like to use them as a mail group. By the default the address is [email protected]
I have defined several virtual domains on my server that can accept mails for individual user. I would like to have the following address working [email protected]
How can I set it up as the email cannot be set for groups in the workgroup manager (It is only working for users).
I also tried with the directory utility but I can create an Emailaddress key for a group or an user but it is not taken into account by the mail server. (workgroup manager probably does more than just creating an entry on the open directory :-( )
    Thanks for you help !
    Frédéric

group addresses have been broken for some time.
I've used scripts to create aliases based on a group name and its members.
Below is a script that I've used on 10.7 with users in LDAP.
Any group which has a comment of 'mail' will be turned into an alias with the proper recipients.
You'll need to run it on a schedule (unless you want to run it manually) and you'll need to modify it for 10.8 and your specific environment.
I'll try to put together a 10.8 version sometime soon...
    cd /etc/postfix
    # clear current aliases
    echo "" > group_aliases.tmp
    # Get list of groups with 'mail' in the comment field
    gr=`dscl /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 -list /Groups Comment | grep mail | awk '{print $1}'`
    for group in $gr
       do
          echo $group: `dscl /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 -read /Groups/$group dsAttrTypeNative:memberUid | cut -d : -f 3 | grep -v "No such key"` >> group_aliases.tmp
       done
    cmp -s group_aliases.tmp group_aliases > /dev/null
       if [ $? -eq 1 ]; then
          echo different
          cp group_aliases.tmp group_aliases
          /usr/sbin/postalias /etc/postfix/group_aliases
          /usr/bin/newaliases
       else
          echo same

  • How to define the "target group" in STMS?

    Experts:
We have a ECC  landscapes with many clients on DEV and QAS.
The previous basis admin created 2 target groups at STMS.
The first TARGET  GROUP  has  both DEV and QAS clients as the target systems in its definition.
The second TARGET GROUP  has only the QAS clients as the target systems--so many QAS clients show up in both Target  GROUPS.
Could you help explain why we need the second TARGET GROUP  since all target systems in the second TARGET  GROUP already  show up in the first TARGET GROUP.
    Thanks a lot!

The second TARGET GROUP that has only the QAS clients can be used where a transport only needs to be send to QA systems/clients and not to Dev clients.
An example would be client independent objects, you don't need to move them to rest of the Dev clients but need to be moved to QA.
    Hope this helps

  • How do I define 2 disk groups for ocr and voting disks at the oracle grid infrastructure installation window

    Hello,
It may sound too easy to someone but I need to ask it anyway.
I am in the middle of building Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 on Linux. I have 2 storage and I created three LUNs in each of storage so 6 LUNs in total look in both of servers. If I choose NORMAL as a redundancy level, is it right to choose my 6 disks those are created for OCR_VOTE at the grid installation? Or should I choose only 3 of them and configure mirroring at latter stage?
The reason why I am asking this is that I didn't find any place to create asm disk group for ocr and voting disks at the oracle grid infrastructure installation window. In fact, I would to like to create two disk groups in which one of groups contains three disks those were brought from storage 1 and the second one contains rest three 3 disk that come from the last storage.
I believe that you will understand the manner and help me on choosing proper way.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    You have 2 Storage H/W.
You will need to configure a Quorum ASMDisk to store a Voting Disk.
Because if you lose 1/2 or more of all of your voting disks, then nodes get evicted from the cluster, or nodes kick themselves out of the cluster.
You must have the odd number of voting disk (i.e 1,3 or 5)  one voting disk per ASM DISK, So 1 Storage will hold more voting disk than another storage.
    (e.g 3 Voting Disk - 2 voting stored in stg-A and 1 voting disk store in stg-B)
If fail the storage that hold the major number of  Voting disk the whole cluster (all nodes) goes down. Does not matter if you have a other storage online.
    It will happen:

  • How to define TYPE GROUP?

    Hello,
I would ike to use few custom types across several programs/routines. Shall I define TYPE GROUP? If yes , how to do it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I prefer defining data elements, structures and table types. These types can easily be analysed dynamically in an ABAP program so they provide a higher flexibility. Also you can add (SapScript) Documentation.
You can define a type-group in SE80 - Other Object - Data Dictionary - Type Group.

  • How to add ASM Disk to Disk Group that is shown as MEMBER?

    HI,
We have a Production Oracle RAC on HP-UX. We have Two Disk Groups one for Arcive (ARC_DISK) and other for Database(DATA_DISK).
Today I wanted to add another 200 GB of Disk Space to the DATA_DISK Group.
I opened DBCA and could not find the new disk in the 'Show Candidates' option. But after the Unix admin changed the ownership and permission of the Disk, it was shown in 'Show Candidates' option. I selected this Disk and continued but got an error later as we didnt change the ownership and permission from the 2nd Unix server. After doing this, , when I open DBCA to add disk, nothing is shown in 'Show Candidates' option but when we click on 'Show All', the new disk is listed as MEMBER (header status) but not allocated to any Disk Group.
I would like to know how to allocate this Disk (which is already shown as MEMBER) to the DATA_DISK - ASM diskgroup. This is a production database system.

    Hi,
Due to huge difference in Disk Size which I am trying to add to the existing Disk Group which has 1024 GB of Disk, would it be a better idea to create a new Disk Group with 200g GB Disk? Will this command work as the header_status is already MEMBER?
    SQL>CREATE DISKGROUP DATA_DISK1
    EXTERNAL REDUNDANCY
    DISK 'disk path';
Thanks.Yes, you can create new diskgroup (DATA_DISK1). Just make sure all datafile in DATA_DISK autoextend off, then create all your new datafile to the new diskgroup DATA_DISK1. The command will not work as the header_status is MEMBER. You'll receive ORA-15018 & ORA-15033 error. As I mentioned before, you need to use FORCE option or format the disk using dd* command before perform above command.
1st Option : (Format the raw disk using dd command creating new diskgroup. Header_status MEMBER -> CANDIDATE). E.g.
    1. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/c2t1d0 bs=8192 count=1000 //any rac nodes
    2. # chown oracle:oinstall /dev/rdsk/c2t1d0 //perform on both node. This apply if using LVM or direct access to raw
    3. SQL> create diskgroup data_disk1 external redundancy disk '/dev/rdsk/c2t1d0'; //any RAC node in ASM instance
    4. SQL> alter diskgroup data_disk1 mount; //try to mount on the other node
2nd Option : (Using FORCE option when creating the new diskgroup. Header_Status = MEMBER)
    1. # chown oracle:oinstall /dev/rdsk/c2t1d0 //perform on both node. This apply if using LVM or direct access to raw
    2. SQL> create diskgroup data_disk1 external redundancy disk '/dev/rdsk/c2t1d0' force; //any RAC node in ASM instance
    3. SQL> alter diskgroup data_disk1 mount; //try to mount on the other node
Just be careful when using FORCE option or DD command. If you perform this operation on existing ASM disk groups disk, it may destroy existing disk groups.

  • How to define replication groups?

              Hai All!

    Hi,
For most situations, there is no need to define a replication group. Simply define
the machines and servers in your cluster and denote which servers are located on
which machines. WebLogic will do its best to make sure that the primary and
secondary are not located on the same machine. Replication groups allow you to
have more control over the selection of secondary server selection if you had some
extraordinary situation where you needed something other than making sure the
primary and secondary copies were on servers located on different machines.
              Hope this helps,

    Hi Charan,
Article Grouping in its broader sense  means grouping of Articles for ease of maintenance and business functions, either on the basis of Hierarchy or on the basis of Merchandise Category.Article Grouping is also primarily useful in promotions, wherein you can define a set of articles(which may not necessary fall under the same MC or Hierarchy) and club them together and assign them in a promotion.Txn codes used are : VBG1/2/3 - Create/Change/Display Article Group

  • What is the failure group in ASM  and the meaning of ASM assigns each disk

    Hi
    Please help me in understanding
what is the failure group in ASM and the meaning of "ASM assigns each disk to it's own failure group, by default"

As you may have known ASM uses mirroring and striping of files. Mirroring is storing same compies/parts of files in different disks/controllers. When creating disk group which could consist of several disks, you have to assign disks at least to separate failure groups for normal redundancy , or three failure groups for High redundancy. This means that ASM will never assign mirrode copies/pieces of files to the same failure group. So, assigning disks to different failure groups you make sure mirrored copies are not on the same physical storage. Saying with other words, failure group gives your more abstract meaning based on which you can organize your physical disks contained in disk group.
That is why for normal redundancy at least two failure groups are needed, because there are one mirrored copy of each extent(allocation unit, to be exact) and for high redundancy the requirement is at least 3 failure groups, because each allocation unit has 2 mirrored copies, which should be on different failure group, consequently.
    Hope, this explanation is helpful.
