How to determine who is connected via AFP in WORKGROUP

I am running a WORKGROUP configuration leopard server on a MP early 2008. Using the server widget I can tell if there are users connected but I have not figured out how to determine Who is connected and how to contact them if I want to reboot the server. Moreover, how do I determine what users are doing? The AFP log is turned off in this config and I can't get it to come on. From the command line I could use serveradmin to find out who is connected but in the workgroup config it is not clear if it is OK to run serveradmin since the GUI counterpart "Server Aministrator" is forbidden unless you upgrade to the advanced config. Does anybody know if the CLI serveradmin is OK to use in the WORKGROUP config or know any other way to determine who connected via AFP and SMB and what files they have open? This semms like a terrible security risk without knowing who is doing what.
Thanks
-Chris

Just in case others have the same question, I have determined that the CLI tools can be used to query the file services without any apparent detrimental effects while using our leopard server 10.5.3 in a workgroup configuration. Hence the names of AFP users can be determined from the command line by:
sudo serveradmin command afp:command = getConnectedUsers | grep name
and the smb users can be found with:
sudo serveradmin command smb:command = getConnectedUsers | grep name
Hope that helps

  • AFP Sharing--How to see who's connected???

Looking for a solution. I manage approx. 10 macs in an office where most systems have afp enabled. I know a can monitor who's connected to our osx server with server mgr, but I want to do the same thing on the client machines (i.e. for any given client machine; see who's connected to it).
Currently, I've modified the AppleFileService Access Log in Terminal so that connection history/status can be viewed with Console, but I'd like a better way. Is anyone aware of any potential solutions using applescript, automator or some existing freeware/shareware that would show any active connections. A nice icon in the menubar (similar to iChat) where a list of any connected users is displayed would be ideal.
Any suggestions/recommendations would be appreiciated! Todd

    Hi Todd
I've used xAFP - it relies on the same log file and gives you a quick-and-dirty menu icon (which reads "a0" for reasons I can't quite fathom).

  • Who is connected via internet sharing?

How do you view who is connected to your wifi via internet sharing? I had to get rid of the password in order to get internet sharing to work with my other devices.

    Jimbo:
One way is to use Network Utility (Applications/Utilities). Click on the Netstat tab then select "Display routing table information." Next click the oval "Netstat" button to run it and down the left column of information you should see the names and MAC addresses of any connected computers.

  • Solaris 8 x86: How to install on disk connected via IDE controller

I have a PC with a Pentium 4 processor and the following IDE disks:
Disk 1 and 2 at the primary IDE bus.
Disk 3 connected via Promise Ultra 133 IDE controller.
I want to install Solaris 8 Intel x86 edition on Disk 3, but the installation
program only lists disks 1 and 2 as locations for install.
Is there any method how to get Solaris 8 installed on Disk 3?
Thank you very much for your help!
    Thomas

    Hello Michael,
    thanks for the information.
There is no support for the Promise Ultra 133 IDE controller listed.
Also, searching the internet for a private developed driver was not
    successful.
Anyway, I have tried to make a test installation on a hard disk
connected to the primary IDE controller and I detected a lot of
further installation problems with my equipments because of
missing or not properly identified drivers.
So I think I have to make further investigations on concepts
how to get Solaris 8 run in the best way.
    Thanks again for your help,

  • Password expired error when connecting via AFP to a server.

Hello everyone, I am new to OSX server and have had much help from everyone here on many issues just be reading the posts. But now I have one issue that is driving me nuts and I cannot seem to fix it.
I have 10.5.8 with Open Directory and one shared folder on that server. Half the users that connect to the server via AFP (Because they have laptops and conenct remotely) get a password expired error. As a work around I have setup new accounts for them with different ID's which do work but no matter what I do, the old ones wont. I have also noticed that a user can try and connect just one time and thier account gets disabled even though we have it set to disable after 5 failed attempts.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi
One thing you could try is to double-check the Self Signed Certificate has not expired. I've seen this cause similar problems to yours. If it has expired you'll see a Red Triangle by the side of it. Amend it and change the start date to the current date and the expiry date to sometime in the future. It makes sense to set it to 3 or more years from the set start date. There's no logical reason to leave it at the default 12 months. Especially as you'll probably forget this and not watch out for it when it's due to expire.
After you've done this you could set a Password Policy for your users to change their passwords at next login.

  • HT200160 Connecting via AFP to an older NAS device?

I have tried all of the "workarounds" that have been suggested and none of this works.
I recently got a new Mac (running 10.8.2) and I can no longer connect to my LaCie Big5 Network2 NAS as a "Registered User" via AFP.
I can connect as a guest via AFP but when I save files to the Big5 they are "Invisable"?
I can connect as a registered user via SMB, BUT when I do a lot of the files that are on the Big5 appear as Unix files and I can not work with them.
I have tried all of the suggestiuons that I found on this forum relating to entering comands in Terminal, but I may not be doing this correctly.
I have never used Terminal and I attempted to set up a "root" account, but the buttons that the instructions tell me to click on are not there?
Is there something wrong with what I am doing?

Well, I would use this procedure rather than the first one which is very convoluted, difficult to follow, and not well explained. Just my opinion.
You don't require a root account. That is circumvented by the use of "sudo" prior to each command line in the procedures.
Frankly, I'm assuming that the LaCie product you have now is fairly old. Maybe replacing it would make sense. Alternatively, you could look for an enclosure to replace the one you now have. Remove the drives and install them in the new enclosure. You may find suitable products at OWC.
Out of curiosity what is your NAS used for? Are you the only user? What wouldn't you be able to do if you simply had a drive connected directly to the computer?

  • How to determine who has a PDF file open?

I generate a daily report in PDF format and place the file on a shared server.  The problem arises when I attempt to delete the file (in order to replace with the new version) and someone has the file open.  I end up with two versions of file on she share drive.  The only way to determine which is the current file is due to the date I place at the end of the file name.
Is there a way to determine who has the file open?  This would eliminate confusion amongst my peers.
    Thank you.

This is not a feature of Acrobat. You may be able to look at the server logs.

  • 10.5 clients cannot connect via AFP to 10.4.11 server

    Server : xServe running 10.4.11
Login with AFP is successful with
    Clients:
    all 10.6.x
    all 10.4.x
Login fails ( or more accurately never produces a login dialog window,
just get a "Connecting to afp://x.x.x.x" message with barber pole
progress bar ) with any 10.5.x client ( workstation or server )
There is another 10.4.11 server in this network that allows 10.4, 10.6
and 10.5 clients to connect without issues.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

The server uses both OD accounts and Local, but mainly the logins are local accounts on the server. Cannot login with either one - but it is definitely limited to just clients logging in from 10.5 workstations or servers... The same accounts can login fine from 10.4 or 10.6 machines. Seems to be a config problem limited to this 10.4.11 server. But have no idea what it could be. I have another 10.4.11 server that does not have this issue.

  • 10.3.9 - Server connections via AFP getting FTP login window

After a server restart, users who browser to our server via Networks->My Network are getting an FTP login window rather than the normal AFP one. If they login that way they mount the FTP root.
AFP is still working though, as users can connect fine by going to Finder->Go->connect to server and choose a shared folder to mount.
Any ideas on what's going on?

This is mostly a "me too" but I've got similar issues. Our Panther server will suddenly become very slow. Not just file transfers; using remote desktop to attempt a login at the "console" is also slow. Stopping and restarting AFP service clears it up temorarily, as does rebooting the server.
The coincidence here is that it started happening when we upgraded a lab of Windows 98 boxes to Windows XP. You would think this would only affect SMB service, but it's AFP that gets hit.
Again, server shows light CPU and Network loads, but transfers perform like I would expect from 10Mb hubs instead of 100/1000Mb switches.
Was your performance drop just a sudden occurence or did it happen after a significant change somewhere in your network?

  • How to determine who performed the last full database dump before cumulative dump

    Hello,
ASE 15.7 SP100 allows cumulative backups, and if cumulative dump is tried before a full dump, ASE shows this error:
You cannot execute an incremental dump before a full database dump.
From my experiments, it seems that it does not matter how the full dump is performed (by native isql, or by a 3rd party API). As long as a full dump is done on a database, ASE seems to be keeping track of all the changed pages since the last full dump. So this means that you can perform a full dump using a 3rd party API, and then on isql, if you run a cumulative dump command, the cumulative dump succeeds, which is based on the last full dump by another library!
So, my question is: is there any way to programmatically determine how (by native isql or 3rd party) the last full backup was performed? I believe $SYBASE_HOME/ASE-15_0/dumphist contains this info, but it requires 'enable dump history' to be set first, and I am looking for a solution which does not involve checking a disk file.
    Thanks,
    Ali

    Dear Mr Razib,
I have not explored the feature but ASE autiding might provide you the possibility to access information on past database dumps via SQL.
Apart from that - I am not aware of an SQL interface to the dumphist file (would be nice to have, I agree)
Enabling dump history is definitley highly recommended  (in my opinion) .
There is yet another feature which might help you to prevent an DBA from dumping databases and transactions to various locations.
When you create a DUMP CONFIGURATION and additionally set parameter
            enforce dump configuration
ASE will prevent normal (free style) DUMP commands but enforce the use of an existing dump configuration. The mechanism is not fool proof (nothing prevents from creating yet another dump configuration on the fly) - but at least something.
    With kind regards

When the Z3C is paired via bluetooth with my car audio system, the Z3C playes a different ringtone then the one which I have set as default.
How can I change (set) the ringtone when the Z3C is connected in my car?

I'm not to sure but I would imagine it has something to do with Smart connect and how it's setup when paired

  • I can see other Macs on network, but I can't connect via afp, smb or Bonjour

    Hello.
I have a Mac Pro running 10.6.8, a Macbook Pro running Lion, an Ipad 2nd generation and an Iphone 4. All the devices "see" each other, but I am unable to establish a connection.
For instance: I can see the other mac in the finder, but a connection can't be made neither via clicking or using command + K
I can see my iTunes libraries in the remote app, but it wont connect to the iTunes library. Same with iChat: in the Bonjour network both macs see each other, but no message is delivered.
However, I can connect to the harddrive, that is connected to my airport extreme. Previously I thought my router was the problem, but now I exchanged it with this airport Extreme.
In another thread I read something about adding 10.0.1.* to "Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts and Domains" in the network proxy settings, but this did not help. Although I am not sure if I entered it right.
Any ideas how to resolve this problem?

    Hi,
Please turn off the Windows Firewall in the Control Panel for test:
Control Panel->type firewall in the search box->Windows Firewall->Turn Windows Firewall on or off->Turn off
    Windows Firewall (not recommended)->OK
    Then Make sure all computer
    turn on the network discovery.
Also, apps that are managed from non-domain servers cannot see or control this Windows 7 machine
In addition, make sure the Server, Windows 7 and other comouter in the same network. Otherwise it can't be accessed each other.

    (Thanks, It's much appreciated)

    Hi
Its takes longer to describe the full installation how to use the BT for internet sharing.
I have found this website with a installation instruction for Windows 2000.
The dialogs for Windows XP might be a little different, but the configuration will be the same.

Yes, it's there after choosing "Edit -> Display more" in the import history.
