How to display conditional things on the front panel ??

Hello,
What I am trying to do is this: The user will select some information from a combo box, and depending upon twhat he has selected I want to display different things based on his selection.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bira_pxi

You can programmatically change the visibility of any object using property nodes with the "visible?" property.
If the groups of elements are similarly arranged, use a tab indicator (place tab control...change to indicator) and place each group of FP elements on it's own tab. Now hide the tabs and select the active tab programmatically by writing the desired state to the tab indicator.
Another option is the use of subpanels.

  • How can I simultaneously acquire and display an image on the front panel using a PCI-1424

    Dear friends;
I want to use PCI-1424  , and labview 5.1 to capture the image,  But I can not find some functions in labview to capture, display and save the image. Can you be kind to share some examples or provide some information.
Another question is how I CAN display the image in the front panel.
    thanks so much

    Hello yangshang,
Thank you for contacting National Instruments!  To acquire images from the 1424 you will need NI IMAQ 2.5.1 or later.  This can be found HERE on our drivers download page.  One thing to note is that in LabVIEW 5 we only had the ability to view an IMAQ image as a pop up window.  This VI is called "IMAQ Windraw".  This will pop up a separate window that will display your picture.  If you need to view the picture on the front panel you can try saving the image as a file (BMP, JPG, etc) then use the LabVIEW Graphics and Sound VI's to Read a picture file in and then wire the picture to a picture control on the front panel.  Let me know if you have anymore questions.  Good Luck.

  • How do I programmatically display jpeg files on the front panel

    Hi,
I would like to be able to programmatically display various jpeg images on the front panel of a VI. I would mostly like to be able to display one image at a time and have the ability to programmatically change the image to different ones under program control. I found a picture indicator but not sure how to use if or if this is the best way. Thanks for any help.
    Dave Adams

Yes, you can use a picture indicator.
The attached simple codelet shows how to display a jpeg image on it (Make sure the image indicator is big enough).
Let us know if you need help with the rest of the coding.

Do you actually need to save the front panel image?  Or do you want to save a graph of the signal (spectrum) that you acquired?  If the latter will do the trick, you can simply read the waveform over GPIB (or whichever means you control the analyzer) into an array that is plotted to a waveform graph in LabVIEW.  You then save the image of the waveform graph as an image.
Since you have all the data, you can even save the data which can be viewed later (and not only by LabVIEW).

  • How to programmatically load and show the front panel of a vi but NOT run it?

Is there a way to load and show the front panel of a vi but NOT run it?  I am starting with the AsynchronousCallAndForget.vi from the example finder and inserted an invoke node with the FP Open method call prior to the Start Asynchronous Call node. The vi I am loading has the "Run when opened" unchecked and the menu bar IS visible so I can manually click the run arrow. Thanks!
    Solved!

Why are you using the Async call? If you simply open the VI reference, then call the FP.Open method this works fine. You can then call the VI run method with Wait Until Done set to false if you wish to run it Asynchronously, this is how we did it in ye olde days before we had this new fangled "Start Asynchronous Call" stuff.

  • How to bring of subvis to the front panel of main vi?

I am working on a simulaton project where a PID control toolkit is used to controla process .How can I access the controls of this PID controller when I execute the main VI ?

I'm not sure I understand. The PID VIs I know run within your code on a loop basis. In every iteration of the loop they run using the values you input and output the proper values. So, to input values, you simply wire controls into them. Regardless of this, to open the front panel of a VI, you need to get a reference to that VI (using open VI reference) and wire that reference into a property node (both can be found in the Application Control palette).
Select the Front Panel>>Open property, wire T into it and the FP will open. You can also set the VI to have its front panel open when called in File>>VI properties.

  • How do I get the Label for a Front Panel Control to appear in the Block Diagram but not on the Front Panel?

How do I get the Label for a Front Panel Control to appear in the Block Diagram but not on the Front Panel? On the Front Panel I am making a complex control that consists of a Slider and a Numerical Input box. Both Controls display the same information and either can be used for Input. When one changs, the other is made to display the same value.
But I only want the Slider to display the Label on the Front Panel, to avoid confusion. On the Block Diagram however, I want both controls to display their Labels so that I know what they are. How do I display the Label for a Control on the Block diagram, but not display its Label on the Front Panel?

No.  The Label Visible property is separate for the front panel control label and the block diagram terminal label.
How did you start out with the block diagram's label not being visible?  Whenever I drop a control or indicator, the label is always visible on both the FP and BD by default.  Maybe there is a LabVIEW option that causes new controls/indicators not to have their labels visible by default, but I have yet to find it.  I don't think an item should ever be dropped without the label visible, good LabVIEW coding practice demands that the labels for control terminals on the block diagram be visible so that you know what control or indicator a wire is going to.
That being said, I have seen a lot of VI's posted where the label for the terminal on the BD is not shown (against good programming practice.)  I've gone to the BD and right clicked to show the label.  Sometimes, the people have an empty label (which will turn off the visibility for both the FP and BD) and I'm forced to add some text of my own into the label so I can figure out what their code is doing.  When I add some text to the label, at that time, I find both the BD and FP labels become visible.
Are you dealing with controls that have empty labels to start?
    Good programming practices:
    1.  Always have a name for all of your controls, never use and empty label by deleting the text in the label.
    2.  Make the labels unique.  For example, don't have two controls both called Stop.  How do you know quickly know which terminal relates to which control?
    3.  Always show the labels on the block diagram, so you know the function of a control's terminal.  If you want to hide the label on the FP, that's okay.
    4.  If you want a different label to appear on the FP than whatever you actually called the control, then use the caption.  You can hide the label and show the caption.  This is useful if you need to programmatically change what the "label" is on the front panel such if you are making an application that needs to change its user interface such as for a foreign language.

  • How can I display a changing variable in a subvi on the front panel of the main vi as the subvi is excuting

In the document attached the vi on the right is sub to the vi on the left. On the subvi on the right the variable "Field Reading" is continuously updated on the front panel of the subvi as the "for" loop is executed, but only the last value of the variable is updated on the main vi front panel which is what is expected. My question is how can I display the changing value of "Field Reading" on the main vi front panel as the "for" loop in the subvi is running?
    Thank you.

Hopefully I can explain it well enough. It really is simple.
    1) Create an empty global variable and call it something like User Interface References.vi
    2) For each and every control and indicator on your front panel, right-click and select Create/Reference
    3) Place these references wherever you like (I use a series of Event cases to perform my initialisation and these all live in one of these event cases). They can be placed anywhere in the main vi.
    4) For each of the references, right-click and select Create/Indicator
    5) Moving to the front panel, Cut all the indicators and Paste them in the global variable (eg. User Interface References.vi)
    6) Moving back to the block diagram, wire the global variable to each of the references and select the same named global variable.
All the hard work is now done (until you add another user interface terminal). You should now have something that look as shown below, [except the reference labels would be to the left (not sure why the snippet put them above)]. In my latest program I have 82 references!
Done. You can now access all your front panel controls and indicators anywhere in your program as shown below.
You can just select Value in most cases, but in this particular case I wanted to fire off an Event to do some things (log the alarm) as well as just update the value. So, this is another bonus with the method.
Hopefully this all makes sense. If not, let me know.

There are so many things wrong with this VI, I'm not even sure where to start.
Hard-coding paths that point to your user folder on the block diagram. What if somebody else tries to run it? They'll get an error. What if somebody tries to run this on Windows 7? They'll get an error. What if somebody tries to run this on a Mac or Linux? They'll get an error.
Not using Read From Spreadsheet File.
Use of local variables to populate an array.
Cannot insert values into an empty array.
What if there's a line missing from the text file? Now your data will not line up. Your case structure does handle this.
Also, how does this answer the poster's question?

I down loaded your files but could use some instructions on what needs run.
It seems that you are so close yet so far. You need to get the data on the server machine over to the client. I generally do this by doing a call by reference (on the client machine) of a VI that is served by the server. THe VI that executes on the server should pass the data you want to diplay via one of its output terminals. You can simply wire from this terminal (back on the client again) to an indicator of your choosing.
Now theorectically, I do not think that there is anything that prevents use from getting the control refnum of the actual indicator (on the server) of the indicator that has the data, and read its "Value" using a property node. I have never tried this idea but it seems t
hat all of the parts are there. You will need to know the name of the VI that holds the data as well as the indicator's name. You will also have to serve all VI's. This is not a good idea.

  • How can I display the name of my refnum on the front panel?

I am writing data to a file. To do this, I am using "Open/Create/Replace File" to prompt the user for a filename, which is then output to my VI as a refnum. I then write strings to this file with "Write to Text File".
How can I display this filename (with the path) on the front panel after the user has input it?

Use the Refnum to Path function, in File I/O -> Advanced File Functions palette. You can wire this to a path indicator.

  • How to: display large error note in the front panel?

Place an indicator on the panel. Set the text to HUGE and RED, and set its value to "STOP, ERROR DETECTED!". Make it not visible. When you get an error, use the "Visible" property node to display it.

  • How to display the status of a SubVI on the front panel?

    Hi,
I am writing a program to control an instrument through a serial communication port. The control and communication functions are integrated in a SubVI and they work fine.
In the front panel of the main VI, I want to add some indicators to display the status of those controls in real time, such as using some LEDs to show whether the program is running in some loops of the SubVI, or use some indicators to show some variables in the SubVI.
I tried using global variables, but I can't make them work in real time (or maybe I didn't do it right). The values of the global variables are actually changing on the fly, but the indicators on the front panel wouldn't reflect those changes until the program return
    ed from the SubVI.
Is there a way to do this in Labview 6.0.2?
Your earlist help is very much appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Hua

    Hua,
I have attached an example in which a front panel boolean indicator is toggled in the subvi. Also, a front panel stop button is used to stop the loop execution in the subvi. References are passed to the subvi instead of the actual control values.
Without seeing your code I'm not sure what was going on with the globals, but you had to have a data dependency somewhere which was keeping the code from running until after the execution of the subvi. The code must be totally independent of the subvi in order to run. Also, in order for the update to work it would have to be operating in a loop.

lets you define the minimum size of a FP window.
