I purchased a new ipad4 from John Lewis and I opened the box after taking it to home and found one corner having a minute dent, now the vendor says I have dropped the iPad hence the dent is formed

You can see the model number in Settings>General>About>Model. The model number has a two-letter code, a number and some more letters. The last part stands for the country/region. The first letter can be "F" (refurbished), "M" (normal retail), or "P" (personalized / engraved). For example MC605B is the model MC605 and B is for the region.
A refurb iPad has a new back, screen and battery and comes in a brown box.

"Add Folder to Library" is still in the file menu, but you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the file menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:

Now I have to point out that going ballistic has certain connotations but posting on an internet forum is not one of them.
I appear to be one of thousands who are all expressing their outrage in a rational and intelligent manner which cannot be said for your lebvel 4 + collegues on this forum.
Finally there has been an ongoing issue wiith the iPad 3 Wifi on certain wifi only models , I have not encountered it and it seems clear neither have you. That of course does not discount the fact that many others have experienced this issue , an issue which may reveal itself to you or I in the future particularly as I have only been using mine for a fortnight.

Welcome to the Support Communities! There are two things I can think of to keep your Stepdad's information separate from yours on the computer and the iPad. On the computer, he should have his own administrative account, and on the iPad he needs his own Apple ID for iTunes and iCloud services. Here is some basic information to get started. You can't reformat it and not wipe everything on it.
Have you tried a different USB port?

go to 'Edit' in the menu bar. Then choose 'Preferences'.
you'll see a pop-up and there's a tab called 'Devices' there. If you click that, you will be able to check a box that says 'prevent automatic syncing for iPods, iPads and iPhones' or something like that.

NB: if you don't even see the menu bar that has options like 'File, Edit, View, etc', first click the black/white square button on the top left of your screen, and then click 'show menu bar'. It should pop right up.
