How to expand size of a PDF page (I don't mean zoom in)

Hi,
I have a PDF page that is miniaturized and I want to expand it back to a full 8.5x11inches so I can print it out and see it at regular size.
The PDF page, itself, is on an 8.5x11 page at this point, but the content has become shrunk so that it occupies less than half of the current page. Obviously I can zoom in on the content and see it, but if I try to print it out, because the content is shrunken, I can barely see it.
If I was to open the PDF in Photoshop I could use the crop tool and make the currently shrunken content back to regular letter page size, but i was wondering if this was somehow possible in Acrobat Pro 9?
So, can the content be expanded?
(sorry for the poor explanation)
Thanks for any help.
Phil

One way to achieve this in Acrobat 9 is to zoom in until you can see the content at a larger size but still fitting into the window.  Then go to File > Print and choose Current View.  Check the Preview window to make sure that only the content is showing and then print to your pirnter.  This should allow you to print the content in a larger font size to your printer.
Best of luck.

You can crop it, but the size will not change to letter. However, after cropping, you can print with expand to fit page selected. If you like you can expand this to a new PDF using print, though not generally the recommended approach. Do you have any idea how it was reduced in the first place? If so, have you tried the reverse process?

  • Size of placed PDF Page

After placing a page from a PDF, I want to display the size of the page in a text frame.
The closest to the size of the PDF page that I get is when using
    app.pdfPlacePreferences.pdfCrop = PDFCrop.cropMedia;
Sometimes I get and expected size like 8.5 by 11 but some PDFs give me a size of 8.4###### x 10.9######.
If I open up the PDF in acrobat that in indesign showed 8.4###### x 10.9######, it shows 8.5 x 11.
Is my only way around this is to set up some rounding/precision routine?
    Thank you in advance!
** I calculate the size but it starts with geomtric bounds having a lot more decimal places than expected.

Yes, ExtendScript does support toFixed(), but you need a toFixed() that also trims any trailing zeros:
    * same as toFixed(), but trims off those annoying trailing zeros
    * @param decimalPlaces maximum number of digits to the right of the decimal point
    * @returns the same string as toFixed(), except that any trailing zeros are removed
    Number.prototype.toFixedNice = function(/**Number*/decimalPlaces) /**String*/
         return Number(this.toFixed(decimalPlaces)).toString();
So if you include the above in your extendscript, you can do this:
    var x = .999999999999;
    alert(x.toFixedNice(5)); // gives "1", instead of "1.00000"

  • How to export antialiased images of PDF pages?

    Hello all:
I recently upgraded to Acrobat XI, and I am surprised to see that you STILL cannot export (or Save As) PDF pages to images that are ANTIALIASED!? Does anyone have a simple answer for this that doesn't involve a workflow of more than 5 steps? This is so headslappingly obvious a need that I'm at a loss for what Adobe's engineers are thinking when programming the Save As Image functions...
I posted this question all the way back in 2009 (see post at http://forums.adobe.com/message/2411677#2411677), and still the answer is the same: when Acrobat saves pages as TIF or JPEG files, they are ALIASED. Who would want that? Who?! WHY?
It's simply exasperating that Adobe does not include a tiny, little check box that says "Antialiased" in the "Save As TIF / JPEG Settings" dialog box where you set all kinds of parameters like resolution and colorspace....If the exporting process would just include antialiasing, you could set the resolution you desire and YOU'RE DONE.
But, as far as I can tell, you still have to perform some kind of gymnastic routine like:
Open the PDF and select all the desired page thumbnails to export.
Right-click and choose Extract Pages. Make sure to check "Extract Pages as Separate Files."
Export all the separate PDFs for each desired page into a folder somewhere.
Open Photoshop and start recording an Action.
Open one of the PDFs and specify the desired resolution.
Save it in a desired location in an image file of your choice (TIF/JPEG).
    Stop recording the Action.
Delete the resulting image you made of the test PDF page to avoid an overwriting error later when running the batch (or check box to overwrite in batch dialog).
Run the Action in Batch mode on the entire folder of separate PDF pages.
    This is preposterous.
Adobe, please get the simple things right for everyday low-level users before adding feature bloat to Acrobat with each passing version. Please.

Hi Dave: Good points about reducing feature bloat and installer footprint taking priority for most users...
    However, if, as you say:
Acrobat and Adobe Reader are developed as a standalone product family....
Ultimately, since you can get an AA bitmap of a PDF file by just opening it in Photoshop etc., there is very little commercial demand for Adobe to include that feature in Acrobat.
then, those people who do not have Photoshop (because AA is designed to be standalone, right?) cannot access antialiasing in exporting PDF images at all! Your point is exactly my point.
If there is so little demand, then why include Export to Image functionality at all? Just eliminate it completely to save installer footprint space!....But, then, I'm sure you realize people would complain about that immediately, no? So, again, why include it at all when it's only able to export aliased images which virtually nobody is going to want? That's very passive-aggressive toward's Adobe's users. Nobody really benefits from half-baked features only begrudgingly included in software to placate the vocal minority of users who would otherwise miss it. I realize this isn't a huge issue for most users, but I think this points to a larger mentality within Adobe and the software industry in general....
There is a huge number of people working in corporations that own legacy versions of AA who have not and will not likely subscribe to Creative Cloud! (e.g.: The 100-person architecture/engineering firm I worked at for 10 years had one copy of Photoshop on a community graphics workstation and made everyone use a sign-up sheet to access it.)
Also, it's nice in theory that PDFs are supposed to be a print format. But, many many times, AA users have to make images (for PowerPoint, blogs, client portals etc.) from PDFs that they did not originally create and do not have the source files to recreate or export as images from their originating software. PDF export to images from Acrobat is their only choice without access to Photoshop.
And, if AA is truly designed to be a stand-alone product, untethered from the capabilities of the entire suite of functionality across Creative Cloud apps, then a modular plug-in approach to controlling feature bloat would be more appropriate, no?
For example, AutoCAD is a giant, sprawling application for technical drawing. And AutoDesk has recognized over the years that AutoCAD is used by many industries, each with special needs unneccesary to other industries' user base. So, they've created add-on packs of plug-ins that transform vanilla AutoCAD into AutoCAD for Architecture, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Bridge Design, Home Building, etc....see where I'm going?
And Adobe has a far larger installed user base for Acrobat than AutoDesk does for AutoCAD! How about plugins like AA for Technical Publishing, AA for 3D modeling, AA for Presentations?...

  • How to extract part of a pdf page and save that as a pdf page on its own?

I need to extract part of a pdf page. I know how to extract full page, but that is not what I want. I need to extract part of it, ideally, using the mouse to select some rectangular area, and export the selected part to either separate pdf page, or to export to  vector graphics such as .svg
Is there a tool to allow one to do this? Currently I take screen shot of the page, and use other tools to extract the parts I want. thanks.

thank you. The crop tools helps. But I am still not sure what to do after I select the area I want. I looked at Acrobat Help | Crop PDF pages
So, after I select the crop tool and select the area. Now what to do?
If I double click the cropped area, as the help says, it will just delete everything on the page except the cropped area.
How do I tell it to either export the selected area to .svg, or save the selected area to a separate one page pdf file?  I do not want to modify the original PDF file, I just want to make a copy of the cropped area, either to .svg image, or to separate pdf file, so I can include that in another document.

  • How to reduce size or compress PDF files?

    Hi guys,
Does someone knows if there is a way  to reduce the size of the PDF file with good quality even on Pictures and Scanned documents? I know the option 'export', 'quartz filter' 'reduce size', but the compression is so extrem. Many files can't not been read, the quality is so bad. Is there a additional app, software or extension that let the user play with the compression on pdf files and let it be more personalized like the dopdf V7 available for windows? i am very dissapointed with this. Please help or suggestion. I will appreciate it. Thanks

I have used the excellent PDF Toolkit app for a while, and its preformed well. Occassionaly it makes the document into a negative image...which Im noyt sure why...
Mathishk, im trying your online version out, and am impressed and admire the fact that you have done this.
    Well done.
A TRICK i use often. Once all hires images are on the designed document - and its coming in at 15-20mb, just change the link to the images so they are 'missing' then make a pdf.
i.e 'Hi Res images' to HRes images - old'
The screen resolution of images is still great, but file comes in at fraction of the size.
You 'trick' the document to use screen images only. So my 18mb file comes in as 5.2mb.
Just remember to change the images folder name back, so files relink.

  • How to reduce size of a PDF file without loss of sharp graphics

Hi, I'm working in Acrobat Pro X.  I have combined a file of graphics, and need to reduce the size.  Original graphics were created in PScs6, and saved as .jpg's.  What would be the best way to reduce the overall size of the PDF file and still maintain the clarity of the graphics?  Advice would be appreciated.

When you are dealing with graphics, you are almost always talking about reducing the resolution or color depth. A lot depends on the graphics themselves. You might check one of the graphics and see what the color depth and resolution are. The 300 dpi setting is fine in most cases, unless you are wanting folks to zoom in. For many applications a color depth of 256 is fine rather than millions of colors. If those are acceptable options, be sure your graphics are set that way. You can try the Optimize to see if you can improve the size and still have adequate resolution (File>Save As>Optimize PDF).

  • How do I match the printed pdf page breaks with the page breaks from the online form?

The online form is setup to be 4-5 separate pages...each page going to a different person/group when it is printed in a pdf. However, when the form is printed, it prints out all the blanks and the forms are off by about a half page.
Is there any way to not print the blank spaces (I have several boxes hidden based on choices of the user), and to make the printed pdf honor the online page breaks?

    Hi;
When you are viewing the "Design" while authoring your form there is a "View" setting that you can access from the "View" menu along the top right, or from the dropdown at the bottom right corner, if you change from "Web View" to "Page View" you can add page breaks there that will affect the PDF.
Page View is an authoring view to design for PDF where Web View is an authoring View to design for web/browser/HTML forms.  You can use both so that your form looks good in both web and PDF.  Some features have to be added/edited in Web View because they are not supported in PDF such as Attatchments and Skip/Page logic, those are not available to add/edit in Page View.  The Page Breaks added in Web View are not used in the PDF, in Page View "Implicit page breaks" are added automatically based on the size of the page in PDF and you can add "Explicit page breaks" using the form field toolbar as you did in Web View (which will only be used in the PDF).
When you ask if there is any way not to print the "blank spaces" you are referring to the questions that had remained hidden based on skip logic right?  At this time the entire form is saved/printed to PDF, there is not an option to omit those hidden fields.
I hope that I understood your issue correctly, let me know if I can help further.
    Thanks,
    Josh

  • How to create and insert muliple PDF pages to a single file

    Greeting to everyone.
I use Acrobat 8 Standard to create PDF files, usually by PRINTING TO PDF from a CAD file(Vectorworks) or web pages on the net.
I know how to create single pages and I know how to combine them into a single PDF file by using the Document - Insert Pages command.
My question is: When creating a PDF file(e.g from my CAD program), can I print and insert instantly, rather than going through 2 steps.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

No. Future questions concerning Acrobat belongs in the Acrobat forum.

  • How to i fix the blank pdf pages I keep getting?

Nothing loads when I try to follow a website and open a .pdf . I made sure safari, and all my adobe is updated. I checked under security in Safari then opened manage website settings. I found the following  error "Adobe Flash Player" is set to run in unsafe mode for some websites the same is for Adobe Reader. I try to change the settings to allow but it keeps the error message and won't open anything for me. How can I fix this? I've already uninstalled all my adobe stuff and reinstalled it, reset Safari ect but none of these things work. Thanks.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • How to reduce size of generated html page?

    Hi,
Is there an option in oc4j which will remove unneeded white space from the html generated by a jsp page? I have jsp page which generates a html page of 120kb (lots of lines containing only spaces). Formatting this html page using tidy results in an html page of 20kb. (considering that normal modems achieve about 5kb/s downloading these spaces could take about 20 seconds).
I've tried setting the reduce_tag_code option to true but this didn't help. Are there any options in oc4j which might help?

  • Pdf pages for fast open on the web

Could I please receive suggestions on how to have CF Server created Pdf pages with .Jpg pictures open up fast of the internet?
The system which we have created for this organization is great, everything works, but the Pdf pages open very slowlyyyyy.
    Suggestions are appreciated.

Some iPhoto slide shows (those that use only the fade effect) do not fast start. They are made up of three video tracks slightly offset in time and a tween track that sets the fade.
You could open them in QT Pro and use the save as menu. No re-compression but the file size will become three times larger because each of the video tracks will become independent (for lack of a better word). This new file will fast start.
Exporting isn't a good choice unless you use identical settings to the original (Photo-JPEG video codec and an extremely low frame rate).
The file size of the original is "trick" that can only be performed by iPhoto.

  • How can you set (or reset) different page sizes within 1 pdf?

I am working on a pdf with various page sizes.  Say one page at 8-1/2 x 11, another at 11 x 17, and another at 22 x 34.  I obviously can't print as "Choose paper source by PDF page size" as one printer can't do all sizes.  I would like to change the 22 x 34 to 11 x 17.  How can I change the page size setting of one page within a multiple-paged pdf?

You can play with the Crop tool. You'll find it is easier to "size up" than "size down".
May have to extract and bin PDF pages by the virtual page size then work on them.
However, if all you want is to have the content on hard copy and having that on a common sheet size (say Letter) then consider this alternative:
Make a working copy of the PDF.
With the PDF open in Acrobat, open the Pages panel. Expand the panel width as desired.
Now, Ctrl click through the PDF page thumbnails that have a landscape orientation.
Rotate these 90 degrees to a portrait orientation.
    Alt+D+T or Shift+Ctrl+R
    Save as you go.
With all pages in a portrait orientation, use the attached printer to print.
In the Print dialog locate the entry for 'page scaling' and select Fit or Shrink to Printable Area.
All PDF pages' content will be scaled such that all page content fits in an imprint on the Letter size paper.
Or, go the other way and have the imprint of PDF page content fill a larger sheet size.
Just a function of what the printer accepts for paper size and the features provided in the printer driver.
    Be well....
