How to export In-line Javascript to printed documentation?

Hi Folks,
I am working in Robohelp 8 HTML, and have created these wonderful javascript include files that allow me to generate numbered and bulleted list instructions and insert them into my help guide pages.
Basically, the instructions are the same and repeated throughout guide.  What changes are the field names and numbering sequence.
Ah, you say, why not use snippets for this?  I do use them when the block of information is identical and needs repeating.
Well, my cleverness ended when I started to generate printed documentation and discovered that my in-line javascript inserts and my include files are ignored in the export process.
Examples:
In my HTML Robohelp document, I include a javascript file that contains my procedures and functions.  Then in the HTML document, I insert the call, surrounded by all the necessary <script> wrappers:
document.write(how_to_get_to("Manufacturing,Reports",","));
This produces something like this on the webpage:
Steps
   1. Open the main menu.
   2. Click the Manufacturing folder to expand it.
   3. Double-click the Reports menu item to open the window.
When generated to printed documentation, it is just missing.
Questions:
  1.  Anyone else having the same problem?
  2.  Any creative suggestions on how to generate printed documentation.
I already know I can print from the web page.
Thanks!!

Hi Peter,
Ok, well that worked.
I created a snippet with the <OL></OL> tags, and then stripped out these tags when I saved the snippet.  No space before or after.
Then when you insert the snippet in your ordered list, you have to go to the HTML side, and remove the closing </OL> tag before the snippet, and the opening <OL> tag that robohelp inserts after the snippet.
So, when you insert it looks like this:
<li class="p-BodyText"><p class="BodyText">Optional. &#160;Press the
  <span style="font-weight: bold;">Warehouse Search</span> button to
  filter the report for a specific warehouse, or leave the field empty
  to include all warehouses. &#160;</p></li>
</OL>
<?rh-placeholder type="snippet" ref="FLD-Location From To" ?>
<?rh-placeholder type="snippet" ref="FLD-Account Group From To" ?>
<?rh-placeholder type="snippet" ref="FLD-Account From To" ?>
<?rh-placeholder type="snippet" ref="FLD-Item From To" ?>
<OL Type="1">
<li class="p-BodyText"><p class="BodyText">Leave the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Material
  Code</span> field empty.</p></li>
And you change it to look like this:
<li class="p-BodyText"><p class="BodyText">Optional. &#160;Press the
  <span style="font-weight: bold;">Warehouse Search</span> button to
  filter the report for a specific warehouse, or leave the field empty
  to include all warehouses. &#160;</p></li>
<?rh-placeholder type="snippet" ref="FLD-Location From To" ?>
<?rh-placeholder type="snippet" ref="FLD-Account Group From To" ?>
<?rh-placeholder type="snippet" ref="FLD-Account From To" ?>
<?rh-placeholder type="snippet" ref="FLD-Item From To" ?>
<li class="p-BodyText"><p class="BodyText">Leave the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Material
  Code</span> field empty.</p></li>
This does translate to the printed page.  A bit more overhead than I would like. But better than managing the same content in a hundred different files.
Thanks for the brainstorm.
Marilyn.

  • Pages: How to export a PDF suitable for print-on-demand

    I need to be able to export a PDF from Pages that will meet the specs for the IngramSpark or Lightning Source Print on Demand programs. They require a PDF that has all fonts fully embedded in one of these two PDF versions:
    PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-3:2002
    Does Pages export - either through the export function or Print function - to either of those specs and does it embed full font sets?
    Thanks.

    The reason neither Pages, or Swift Publisher nor most of the low cost DTP apps do this on OSX is because they use Apple's muddled print output. It almost but not quite outputs to PDF/X-3:2002, and even there there are caveats.
    Indesign and QuarkXpress use their own print engines and Scribus uses GhostScript.
    GhostScript is available for OSX. I have not tried this so you are in wide open territory, but experiment to see if it fixes Pages' output. My suspicions are that GhostScript may not capture Pages' output before it has already been through Apple's muddled output.
    There are other problems with Apple's approach. No specifiable defined colours in Styles. No spot colours, and no proofing. ColorSync itself is powerful but undocumented and difficult to tailor. You can run the end result through Acrobat Pro's Press Check but it only picks up the errors, you are on your own trying to fix them.
    The only easy to use, low price DTP application that meets your requirements is Serif PagesPlus, which runs only on Wimdows. You can run this in BootCamp or some other virtualiser.
    Adobe lets you effectively hire Indesign CC by the month so may be a cost effective solution in the short term. It is a professional solution but has a professionally difficult interface.

  • Question - How to Revise a Javascript for Printing a Dynamic Date in the Right Corner of the Page

    Hi Everyone,
    I am using Adobe Professional 8.0.
    How do I revise the JavaScript (not created by me) below in order to execute the two (2) following changes:
    1) Dynamic Print Date - 1.0 inch Up and 1.0 inch Over from the Right Corner of the Page.
    2) Dynamic Print Date - 0.5 inch Up and 1.0 inch Over from the Right Corner of the Page.
    The JavaScript I want to revise is the following:
    /* Put script title here */
    // Add field to each page of form
    var inch = 72;
    for (var p = 0; p < this.numPages; p++) {
    // create rectangle quads for field
    var aRect = this.getPageBox( {nPage: p} );
    aRect[1] = 1.0*inch;
    aRect[3] = aRect[1] - 72; // and 24 points high
    // now construct text field to fill with date information
    var f = this.addField("PrintField", "text", p, aRect )
    f.delay = true;
    f.textSize = 10;
    f.textFont="Arial,Bold";
    f.textColor = color.black;
    f.alignment = "right";
    f.readonly = true;
    f.print = true;
    f.hidden = true;
    f.delay = false;
    var myWillPrintScript = 'var f = this.getField("PrintField"); \r'
    + 'f.hidden = false; \r'
    + 'var d = new Date(); \r'
    + 'var year = d.getYear()+1900; \r'
    + 'f.value = "Print Out Date:" + (d.getMonth()+1) + "/" + d.getDate() + "/" + year; \r';
    var myDidPrintScript = 'var f = this.getField("PrintField"); \r'
    + 'f.value = ""; \r'
    + 'f.hidden = true; \r';
    this.setAction("WillPrint", myWillPrintScript);
    this.setAction("DidPrint", myDidPrintScript);
    Thank you for your help!
    Tracy

    this.addWatermarkFromText({
    cText: util.printd("mmmm dd, yyyy", new Date()),
    nTextAlign: app.constants.align.right,
    nHorizAlign: app.constants.align.right,
    nVertAlign: app.constants.align.bottom,
    nHorizValue: -72, nVertValue: 72
    Will insert the current Monday/Day/Year as a text watermark at the bottom of every page of a document, 1 inch up and 1 inch in from the right corner.

  • How can I export to PDF for Offset printing including color and grayscale photo's?

    After reading dozens of forum, I still don’t found the answer.
    I made a photobook with full-colur and B/W photos for Offset printing. I want the B/W to be in grayscale to avoid color possible color shades. It seems InDesign doesn’t support grayscale, the images become way to dark. Even with exporting without any colour conversion or destination and/or including original colour profiles, the grayscale pictures are being exported to dark to PDF.
    How can I export to PDF for Offset printing including color and grayscale photo’s?

    Yes, the Photoshop & ID CMYK working spaces are the same
    This can get difficult because the 3 programs handle soft proofing differently.
    The working spaces don't matter, it's the document profile(s) that manage the preview. So here is the same grayscale image placed in ID on top and PS on the bottom. I've set my Photoshop info to show the doc profile in the lower left corner. I can see my InDesign's Document CMYK profile in my Proof Setup (the Working CMYK is different and isn't being used). Both profiles are effectively the same Coated FOGRA39 (Black Ink FOGRA in the case of PS).
    But the previews don't match because I have Overprint turned off, so the InDesign preview is Gamma 2.2 or a "screen" media preview.
    If I turn on Overprint preview I get a match because I'm soft proofing for print:

    PDF settings? Flattener settings? Overprint and trapping settings? You need to be much more specific. Eitehr way, ask in the ID forum.

  • How to force print  page breaks (line feeds) in printed documents

    setup:
    Illustrator CS4
    Windows 7
    I've created a longish document of various pieces of text in 2 diffeent fonts.  No graphics.
    Can I insert linefeeds into the document where I want page breaks when it is printed? If so, what is the technique.
    I come from linux/unix background where one can insert a Ctrl+L (line feed) to cause the printer to start a new page
    at that point.
    I got many hits on a search of this forum on `line feed' but those I browsed didn't really get to the question I'm asking.
    Its a little confusing too because it appears from some of the hits that a line feed is different on windows and even does
    something different.
    Or if that isn't the right approach, how can I make the long document print out in some sensible way?
    I'm using a common inkjet printer (epson R800)

    Can I insert linefeeds into the documentwhere I want page breaks when it is printed? If so, what is the technique.
    This is why I mentioned art boards. A new line or line feed is created when you hit the enter or return key. (I mention both keys as i do not know whether you have a mac or PC though I am leaning to pc since you mention linux/unix.
    You should find the folowing link will tell you everything you need to know about artboards.

  • How to Export from Numbers 09 to Address Book or print mailing labels?

    I need to know how to export contact information that is part of a Numbers sheet to Address Book and to be able to print mailing labels. I do not have to print from Address Book but do need to produce address labels. I've tried a number of things from the help menus in Numbers 09, Address Book, Word and Excel for MAC 2011. I probably just don't have a grasp fo what I'm supposed to do. Thanks much!

    nushuz,
    I can sympathize if you're having trouble following the directions. Address Book will reject what looks like a perfectly good CSV file if it doesn't like the data it finds inside.
    Here's what I have found to be the best way to create a CSV from Numbers for Address Book import...
    Drag an Address Book contact to a Blank Sheet in Numbers. That's a Sheet in which you have deleted the default table.
    This will give you a properly formatted table for conversion to CSV, and you just have to add all your contact data to the table you just created. Before you begin though, it's a good idea to Unhide all Hidden Columns, and there are probably many. Hover over any Column Label and click the menu triangle, selecting "Unhide All Columns", or words to that effect.
    After you have all your data situated in the table, Share > Export > CSV and then Import to Address Book.
