How to Expose byte[] Field in the Bindings

I'm using JDeveloper 10.1.3.2 and using JPA...I have a table that contains many columns and one of these columns is an array of bytes:
@Lob @Basic(fetch=FetchType.LAZY)
@Column(name="SYS_CERTIFICATE")
private byte[] certificate;
Is there a way to expose this field in the pageDef for my jspx page? I don't need this field to actually exist on my page, but after an action has occurred I want to programmically populate this field in the bindings.
In the data controls, its listed as a accessor attribute but it has no attributes so if I try to add it as an accessor attribute there are no attributes to select. I can't change the certificate element to be an attribute (instead of a accessor attribute) because the type has to be byte[] and cannot be byte since I need to store an array of bytes. Any ideas?

I created a POJO model to simulate this

}As you see, I used a wrapper class that translates the byte to string and string to byte. I am wondering if there is something similar you can do in your JPA entity
