How to get first Reference from a Mail header?

One of the fields that may appear in an email message header is "References." I need to get the first item (which is a Message ID) in that field. However, when I try the following script for a message that has one or more IDs in References:
<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:800px">using terms from application "Mail"
on perform mail action with messages theMessages
repeat with eachMessage in theMessages
set theFirstRef to item 1 of content of header "References" of eachMessage</pre>
I get: "Mail got an error: Can’t make item 1 of content of header \"References\" of message id 17946 of mailbox \"INBOX\" of account \"David\" into type reference."
If I omit "item 1 of", I get the complete References field. So I've tried:
<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:800px"> set theRefs to content of header "References" of eachMessage
set theFirstRef to item 1 of theRefs</pre>
but that only gets me the first character (or subsequent characters if I use a value > 1), which is an open-angle. (BTW, I don't understand why breaking the action into 2 steps like this doesn't produce the same error as the first example.) I've also tried:
<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:800px"> set theRefs to (content of header "References" of eachMessage)
set theFirstRef to word 2 of theRefs</pre>
This skips the first open-angle in the References field and gets me all of the string up to the first delimiter. Unfortunately, the number of delimiters that may appear in a Message ID varies, so I can't simply grab a predetermined set and concatenate them. Furthermore, that would remove the delimiters, so the resulting Message ID in theFirstRef would be incorrect.
I need a syntax that gets me everything between the first set of open- and close-angles but haven't been able to determine what that is.

Thanks to your pointer, I found "text item delimiters" discussed on pp. 39-40 of the AppleScript Language Guide. A typical References field on my system for the last message in a somewhat long thread looks like this:
<[email protected]> <[email protected]> <[email protected]> <[email protected]> <[email protected]> <[email protected]>
So the message IDs are delimited by spaces and by open- and close-angles. Thus, if I use:
<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:800px"> set {savedDelims, my text item delimiters} to {my text item delimiters, " "}
repeat with eachMessage in theMessages
set theRefs to content of header "References" of eachMessage
set theFirstRef to text item 1 of theRefs</pre>
as you suggested, I get "<[email protected]>". That's close to what I want but includes the open and close angles in the returned string. If, however, I specify <pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:30px">"<> "</pre> as the delimiters, I get the entire field, i.e., no parsing occurs. I've tried variations and found, for example, that <pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:20px">"> "</pre>returns the first string without the close angle, whereas <pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:20px">" >"</pre>(i.e., using the opposite order) returns the entire field -- don't understand why the order matters -- but haven't found the magic.
I know < and > are AppleScript operators (what's more, I've had to take special steps to show the quoted strings properly here) and am wondering whether they're a special case. I've tried using backslash, but that didn't help, either.

  • Lost emails, how to get them back from the Mail folder?

    Hi there.
    I have a folder called +/Previous System+ inside of this folder there was folders of the system I had before.
    Inside there is the Applications folder, and I deleted the old versions of the applications such as Mail, but when I did this, I lost the preferences and the email accounts, the Mail application opened as new, without any account, I still have all the folders and .mbox files under ~[User]/Library/Mail but I don't know how to make the accounts visible in Mail
    Question 1: How can I retrieve my sent and received emails.
    Also the accounts that I had were POP and today I learned that the hosting provider suggests IMAP, so now I'm confused.
    Question 2: What should I do? if I get the accounts back will be POP or should I create IMAP accounts and try to retrieve the emails there?
    Thanks!

    Fixed!
    I imported the mailboxes
    Import data from: Apple Mail
    and everything went back into the Mail folder.

  • How to get first row from view iterator programatically?

    Hi All,
    I am using Jdeveloper 11g Release 2.
    I want to fetch the first row of a view iterator in a bean. Can any one guide me through this use case.
    Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks ... Best Regards
    Bilal

    Use the code snippet as below:
    *// 1. Access the binding container*
    DCBindingContainer bc = (DCBindingContainer)BindingContext.getCurrent().getCurrentBindingsEntry();
    *// 2. Find a named iterator binding*
    DCIteratorBinding iter = (DCIteratorBinding)bc.findIteratorBinding("<ITERATOR_NAME>");
    *//3. Get the RowSetIterator Object*
    RowSetIterator rsi = iter.getRowSetIterator();
    *//4. Get the First Row*
    Row firstRow = rsi.first();

  • How to get File Reference of a properties file from EJB

    Hi,
    I am using Sun App server 7 with Oracle 9i. I am keeping all my SQL statements in a properties file from which I am loading it while making a database operation from Stateless beans. My problem is I am not able to get the reference of the properties file. Here is the code through which I am getting the SQL statements loaded to a cache.
    String sqlFileName = "SQL.properties";
    sqlCache.load(new FileInputStream(sqlFileName));
    From the cache I am sending the SQL statement depending on the key value. But the problem is I have to keep the SQL.properties file on the App Server config directory of the instance where the server.xml file resides. Otherwise it is not able to find the properties file. But I don't want to put the properties file on the config directory of the server instance. Please help how to get the properties file from the packakge. My file is residing inside a package com.company.sql . Botht the properties file and the class accessing the file are residing in the same package. Please help how to get the reference of the file with out putting the file in the config directory.
    Thanks
    Amit Patnaik

    Just wanted to warn you of the hazards if you read a file from EJB
    So please make sure that these hazards will not affect your application. However the solution suggested to use getResourceStream() concurs with ejbSpec
    This snippet is from suns blueprint on ejb
    Why can't EJBs read and write files and directories in the filesystem? And why can't they access file descriptors?
    Enterprise beans aren't allowed to access files primarily because files are not transactional resources. Allowing EJBs to access files or directories in the filesystem, or to use file descriptors, would compromise component distributability, and would be a security hazard.
    Another reason is deployability. The EJB container can choose to place an enterprise bean in any JVM, on any machine in a cluster. Yet the contents of a filesystem are not part of a deployment, and are therefore outside of the EJB container's control. File systems, directories, files, and especially file descriptors tend to be machine-local resources. If an enterprise bean running in a JVM on a particular machine is using or holding an open file descriptor to a file in the filesystem, that enterprise bean cannot easily be moved from one JVM or machine to another, without losing its reference to the file.
    Furthermore, giving EJBs access to the filesystem is a security hazard, since the enterprise bean could potentially read and broadcast the contents of sensitive files, or even upload and overwrite the JVM runtime binary for malicious purposes.
    Files are not an appropriate mechanism for storing business data for use by components, because they tend to be unstructured, are not under the control of the server environment, and typically don't provide distributed transactional access or fine-grained locking. Business data is better managed using a persistence interface such as JDBC, whose implementations usually provide these benefits. Read-only data can, however, be stored in files in a deployment JAR, and accessed with the getResource() or getResourceAsStream() methods of java.lang.Class.
    Hope this info helps!

    Does any one know how to attach a document from your mail, while you are already in your e-mail, meaning not having to look for your file first and then open the e-mail.

    Luis
    Good question - and one that a lot of (business) people would like solved!
    Your question prompted me to do some research, and I found this workaround posted by Scott Grossberg:
    His solution actually addresses a second problem too - how to attach a document when replying to an email message. In your case you may not need to consider the "reply" aspect - but if not right now, it'll come in useful someday!
    I've pasted it verbatim - if it works for you (it does for me) then all credit goes to Scott for solving the problem. There's just one thing I'd add to his solution: you will probably want to rename the message, as by default Goodreader gives it the Subject line: Mail with GoodReader attachments.
    THE GOODREADER OPTION
    1.  CREATE the document you want to send.
    2.  SAVE it to GoodReader (this will require you to buy and install the app).
    3.  Go to your email and OPEN the email thread to which you want to Reply and attach your file.
    4.  COMPOSE your Reply.
    5.  DOUBLE TAP the message.
    6.  TAP SELECT ALL. This will copy the entire email thread.
    7.  OPEN GOODREADER on the iPad and go to the file you want to send as part of your Reply.
    8.  At the bottom of the GoodReader screen you will see an EXPORT icon (it looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing to the right).
    9.  TAP the Export button.
    10.  TAP EMAIL FILE. Depending on your needs, tap either SEND FILE “AS IS” or “FLATTEN ANNOTATIONS.” This will open a compose message screen with the chosen document already attached.
    11.  TAP in the body of the email screen. TAP PASTE. This will place your composed Reply and the prior email thread into the message.
    12.  ENTER the Recipients’ names in the TO: field of your message.
    13.  SEND your email Reply.
    The modified version (= when composing a new message rather than a reply):
    1 Make sure that the doc you want to attach is saved in GoodReader
    2 In the message you are composing, double tap, select all, and then copy.
    3 Open GoodReader and select the file you want to attach
    4 Select the export button at the bottom of screen
    5 Select e-mail file
    6 Position cursor in body of the email message, tap and paste. You may want to delete the "sent from GoodReader" text that precedes the attachment.
    7 Rename your message (as by default it will be Mail with GoodReader attachments)
    8 Add the recipient's address in the To field.
    Hope this helps! All thanks to Scott for this workaround.

  • Restored my 4S. How to get pictures back from the cloud?

    Background: I had a 3GS and on launchday of the 4S I picked one up. A white 32GB on AT&T to be exact.
    I had been having some issues with the battery, so today I figured I'd try and start fresh. Well, I backed up everything on the cloud, and I also backed up everything onto the computer in iTunes when I did the restore.
    I've got my music back. Cool.
    I've got my apps back. Great.
    I can't seem to figure out how to get my photos from the camera roll back. Nor do I know how or if it is even possible to get the photos and my old text messages back on this new restore. Also, none of my mail is coming back either.
    I can see my most recent backup in the iphone settings under iCloud. And I can also see my most recent computer backup on the computer. But I'm not sure what I need to do.
    Any help would be great. Thanks.

    OK - understood.
    There are a couple of ways of going about this. First, my recommended method:
    Restore from a backup (so your photos, SMS etc are on the phone
    Connect to iTunes
    Set the phone to sync photos to a relevant app on your desktop (what app depends whether you're Windows or Mac) - this gets your pics onto the desktop and safe.
    If you want to save SMS, use PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Windows) or similar to copy them off the phone
    Restore the phone as a new device
    Get the photos back the way you got music etc back - via iTunes sync
    The second method entails using one of the utuilities around the place that can extract from the backup - I have no experience with them, so I don't know how well they work. That's why I go for the first method - simpler, more robust.
    By the way, I came across this other method for SMS:

  • How to get each value from a parameter passed like this '(25,23,35,1)'

    Hi
    One of the parameter passed to the function is
    FUNCTION f_main_facility(pi_flag_codes VARCHAR2) return gc_result_set AS
    pi_flag_codes will be passed a value in this way '(25,23,35,1)'
    How to get each value from the string
    like 25 first time
    23 second time
    35 third time
    1 fourth time
    I need to build a select query with each value as shown below:-
    (SELECT t2.org_id, t4.description
    from org_name t2, ref_org_name t3, code_table t4
    where t2.att_data = t4.code
    and t3.ref_code = t2.att_type
    and t2.att_type = 25 and t3.code_type = t4.code_type
    and to_date('01-JAN-10', 'DD-MON-YY') between t2.att_start_date AND t2.att_end_date) q1,
    (SELECT t2.org_id, t4.description

    where t2.att_data = t4.code

    and to_date('01-JAN-10', 'DD-MON-YY') between t2.att_start_date AND t2.att_end_date) q2,
    (SELECT t2.org_id, RTRIM(xmlagg(xmlelement(e, t4.description || ';')
    ORDER BY t4.description).EXTRACT('//text()'), ';') AS DESCRIPTION
    from org_name t2, ref_org_name t3,code_table t4

    and to_date('01-JAN-10', 'DD-MON-YY') between t2.att_start_date AND t2.att_end_date

    and to_date('01-JAN-10', 'DD-MON-YY') between t2.att_start_date AND t2.att_end_date) q4
    Please help me with extracting each alue from the parm '(25,23,35,1)' for the above purpose. Thank You.

    I would propose the usage of regexp for readibiliy purposes and only in the case if this doesnt perform well, look at solutions using substr etc.

    "25"     "23"     "35"     "1"In pl/sql you do something like l_val:= regexp_substr( '(25,23,35,1)', '\d+', 1, 1);
    If t2.att_type is type of number you will do:
    t2.att_type= to_number(regexp_substr( '(25,23,35,1)', '\d+', 1, 1))Edited by: chris227 on 01.03.2013 08:00Sir,
    I am using oracle 10g.
    In the process of getting each number from the parm '(25,23,35,1)' , I also need the position of the number
    say 25 is at 1 position.
    23 is at 2
    35 is at 3
    1 is at 4.
    the reason I need that is when I build seperate select for each value, I need to add the query number at the end of the select query.
    Please see the code I wrote for it, But the select query is having error:-
    BEGIN
    IF(pi_flag_codes IS NOT NULL) THEN
    SELECT length(V_CNT) - length(replace(V_CNT,',','')) FROM+ ----> the compiler gives an error for this select query : PLS-00428:
    *(SELECT '(25,23,35,1)' V_CNT  FROM dual);*
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(V_CNT);
    -- V_CNT := 3;
    FOR L_CNT IN 0..V_CNT LOOP
    if L_CNT=0 then
    V_S_POS:=1;
    V_E_POS:=instr(pi_flag_codes, ',', 1, 1)-1;
    else
    V_S_POS:=instr(pi_flag_codes,',',1,L_CNT)+1;
    V_E_POS:=instr(pi_flag_codes, ',', 1, L_CNT+1)-V_S_POS;
    end if;
    if L_CNT=V_CNT then
    V_ID:=TO_NUMBER(substr(pi_flag_codes,V_S_POS));
    else
    V_ID:=TO_NUMBER(substr(pi_flag_codes,V_S_POS,V_E_POS));
    end if;
    VN_ATYPE := ' t2.att_type = ' || V_ID;
    rec_count := rec_count +1;
    query_no := 'Q' || rec_count;
    Pls help me with fetching each value to build the where cond of the select query along with the query number.
    Thank You.

  • How to get real value from selectOneChoice with javascript?

    Hi,
    How to get real value from selectOneChoice with javascript? The event.getNewValue() only gets me the index of the selected item, not the value/title.
    JSF page:
    <af:resource type="javascript">
    function parseAddress(event)
    alert("new value: " + event.getNewValue());
    </af:resource>
    <af:selectOneChoice label="Location:" value="" id="soc4">
    <af:clientListener type="valueChange" method="parseAddress" />
    <f:selectItems value="#{Person.locations}" id="si7"/>
    </af:selectOneChoice>
    HTML :
    <option title="225 Broadway, New York, NY-10007" selected="" value="0">225 Broadway (Central Office)</option>
    <option title="90 Mark St., New York, NY-10007" value="1">90 Mark St. (Central Office)</option>
    Thanks a lot.

    Something I was missing ,
    You need to add valuePassThru="true" in your <af:selectOneChoice component. I have personally tested it and got the actual value in alert box. I hope this time you got the real solution. You can also test the following code by your end.

  • How to get the value from databank

    Hi,
    How to get the value from databank? and how to set the same value to visual script object?
    thanks,
    ra

    Hi,
    You can use GetDatabankValue(HeaderName, Value) to get the value from databank and SetDataBankValue(HeaderName, Value) to set the value to databank.
    You can refer to the API Reference to see list of associated functions and techniques we can use with related to Data Bank.
    This is the for OFT but if you are using Open Script then you have direct access for getting the databank value but when it comes to setting a value you have to use File operation and write you own methods to do the set operation.
    Thanks

    Hi Rajeev,
    To retrieve a FilterContainer you will need to traverse the report structure:
    ReportStructure boReportStructure = boDocumentInstance.getStructure();
    ReportContainer boReportContainer = (ReportContainer) boReportStructure.getReportElement(0);
    FilterContainer boFilterContainer = null;
    if (boReportContainer.hasFilter()) {
         boFilterContainer = boReportContainer.getFilter();
    } else {
         boFilterContainer = boReportContainer.createFilter(LogicalOperator.AND);
    Calling boDocumentInstance.getStructure() will retrieve the entire structure for the document.
    Calling boReportStructure.getReportElement(0) will retrieve the structure for the first report of the document.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to get the values from repeated frame?.

    Hi
    how to get the values from repeated frame?. i have to disply the first 3 digits in another place in my report.
    i have field empno in repeated frame and i want to disply first 3 digits in another place in the same report.
    thanks

    How often do you need to display it? It sounds like you might want to base a summary on that formula with a function of first or last. If it's a per page basis, it can be a page level summary. If it's at a higher level repeating frame, then you can create the summary at that level. I'd suggest taking a look at the online help for summaries using the first/last functions.
    Hope that helps,

  • How to determine client locale from the mail?

    How to determine client locale(language/country) from the mail(header)?
    I investigate that some mails have not got any content-language header...
    Also, If mail is in multipart , I cannot get it throught the contentType....
    e.g some header contain header like this: content-Type: "text/html; charset=Big5"
    but some are : content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary......";
    So, how can I know the client locale?
    Thanks

    You should be able to get the charset from the content type, as u said. the reason some types don't have a charset, such as multipart/* types, is because they don't contain any content on their own! they only contain nested body parts, each of which should have a charset specified. you're gonna have to get the charset by following the mail structure recursively.
