How to hyperlink text in a paragraph

Hi all (apologies for a newbie question but I couldn't find an answer to this looking through the FAQs)
I inserted a text box in my composition (called "linksAtBottom") and it looks like this:
faq | board | mission | join our mailing list | contact us
All of the above are listed in that one text box called "linksAtBottom"
How do I highlight just "faq", "board", "mission" and so on and tag each with their own URL hyperlink?

Hi Jordi,
Adding your whole text to the dynamic textfield via code, in the code window would be the easiest way to get all your text in that textfield I believe. Another option would be to load in the text via xml.
You can control the normal Edge text props for your dynamic text field, using the text properties panel in Edge. You can't style your hyperlinked text with that built in panel though. For this, I've been using an external stylesheet to style hyperlinked text. I did see a post by forum member oolorin, who suggested that you could put styles inline as shown below (external style sheet is much cleaner though):

How to stop text box on iWeb page from automatically reverting to hyperlink when I click 'save'

As far as I see, the main text box in the body section of my iWeb page reverts to a hyperlink (connecting to a file) when I click save. I don't know how the hyperlink got activated to begin with--I must have done something, but I don't know what it was. I tried this many times to fix it: went to Inspector "hyperlink" section, activated the text box in the page, un-clicked "make hyperlinks active" (so they are inactive), then un-clicked "Enable as a hyperlink." That much works--the hyperlink (little white arrow in blue circle) disappears from the lower right corner of text box. But as soon as I save (command S), the text box reverts to a hyperlink.
If I don't click save and move around the pages, it does not revert to a hyperlink. It only reverts to a hyperlink when the file is saved. Why is it doing this and how to stop this from happening--how to permanently return the text box to a non-hyperlink?
The website page is: http://www.usronline.net/USR/VedicResearch.html. If you click anywhere randomly in the main text, you'll get a prompt to download a PDF file. This should not be, but I can't get this hyperlink to go away for good.

Please pardon the reply delay--a big project deadline had to be met. Now back to this work:
Yes, the text in the oval object had a drop shadow (the oval object itself did not). I removed the drop shadow from the text, but the image file icon stayed in the right corner of the oval object. I deleted the text and then the image file icon disappeared. But as soon as I typed text again inside the oval object (not even pasting the previous text) the image file icon appeared again. I deleted the oval object entirely and simply typed the text inside the main text box itself. The image file icon that was attached to that oval object is gone (along with the oval object).
Still the image file icon is attached to the main text box, though. I again tried to uncheck the Enable as hyperlink (same process as described in first posting) with that oval object gone, but when I "save" again it reverts to a hyperlink.
Next I tried this: I copied the text from the problem text box and pasted it into another text box (outside of the problem one). Still in the new text box with the pasted text, the image file icon shows in the upper right corner.
I also removed all the drop shadow features from this main text box (there was one more, on some words typed in the main text box), but it is still showing as an image.
I don't know how it became an image file, and I'm still stumped as to how to fix it (short of forgetting about trying to figure out how it became an image and just retyping all text into a new text box).
The link you provided for "Web Safe Fonts" is returning this: "The server at www.ampsoft.net is taking too long to respond." I'm using Arial and Georgia (Georgia only on the menu and header text) in the site, and I had verified before designing the site that these are web safe, so I had thought they were.
If you or anyone have any further suggestions or suspicions on this matter, I'd be glad to hear them.

How does photoshop position fonts in paragraph text boxes?

I am trying to understand how photoshop places the baseline in a paragraph box.
I have a number of custom fonts, when typing in a paragraph text box some of these fonts appear to cross over the bounding box of the paragraph text.
I've looked at the font dimensions, ascender, descender, baseline and x-height and cannot find a common theme that photoshop appears to use.
Its starting to make my head hurt, so please if anybody knows what calculations photoshop uses to place fonts please let me know!

InDesign is best for larger amounts of text like full paragraphs, but I use PS all the time for text in ads where text is fairly minimal but infinite visual placement is critical. Then I find staying in PS most convenient. Once you learn the (IMO non-intuitive) text formatting controls, infinite adjustment and placement is possible.
Text boxes in PS, however, are IMO problematic regardless of font. If one must use PS rather than InD, when possible it is best to simply type text and format using returns, etc.

you can give the hyperlink in the documentation by going to the path below
MENUBAR ----> INSERT -----> TEXT -----> HYPERTEXT.
this will solve the issue

How do I change text within a paragraph in VB-script?

I am having some problems with changing the text inside a paragraph without affecting the styling of other paragraphs. It may be that I am using a wrong approach to changing existing text, I don't really know.
As an example, I have the following two paragraphs inside a table cell:

These two paragraphs have different paragraph styles applied to them.
If I now change the contents of the first paragraph to a 1 digit number, the style of the second paragraph changes to the same style as the first one.
Paragraph1.Contents = "4" & Chr(13)
The text is correct after the change, but the styling on the second paragraph is wrong:

35
I have also tried using Paragraph.Lines(1).Contents and Paragraph.Texts(1).Contents, but the result is the same.
Is there any way of changing text inside a paragraph, which ensures that noting other than that text is affected?

Hi Frank,
The problem is occurring because you're effectively removing the paragraph end by replacing the entire contents of the paragreaph. You want to use the Characters collection and the ItemByRange method so that you can leave the paragraph end untouched.
I'm pretty sure it would look something like this though I haven't tested this:
Set SChar = Paragraph1.Characters(1)
Set EChar = Paragraph1.Characters(-2) 'giving you the 2nd to last character.
Set TxtToDel = Paragraph1.Characters.ItemByRange(SChar, EChar).
TxtToDel.Delete
Then you can set Paragraph1.InsertionPoints(1).Contents to the new text.
If the ItemByRange doesn't work you can always loop through the character collectoin and delete all but the last characters in the paragraph.

Creating an interactive pdf in InDesign CS6, hyperlinking text to a video. Both pdf and video placed on a usb thumbdrive. When clicking link on Mac a warning box came up, but after clicking Allow the video played fine. On PC the warning box also came up but clicking Allow did nothing

You'll need to use startDrag and stopDrag in order to be able to move an object (the slider handle). You will need to specify a rectangle that has 0 height for the drag limits. The width of that rectangle will define the maximum value of the scroll (which will be the maximum value of your scale.
Assuming you will have a linear scale for values along the drag line, the math is fairly easy to manage. The x property of the handle at the minimum slider position should be 0. You use the ratio of the current x position of the slider handle to the full width to determine what value to assign ( ex: ratio = handle.x / rectangleWidth). So if the minimum value is 1K and the maximum value in 10K, you essentially have 9K represented by the length of the line, so the value provided by the slider position at any point along that line would be 1K + (ratio * 9K)
You can use a MOUSE_MOVE event listener that you assign when the slider's MOUSE_DOWN event occurs to update the textfield as the slider is moved. You can remove the MOUSE_MOVE listener when the slider's MOUSE_UP event occurs.
So, in summary, you need to look into the startDrag and stopDrag methods, which will be inititiated using MOUSE_DOWN and MOUSE_UP events, respectively. The MOUSE_DOWN event will create a MOUSE_MOVE listener that you will use to have a function continually update the textfield value displayed, while the MOUSE_UP event will have that MOUSE_MOVE listener removed. The ratio of the x property of the slider to the total slideable distance will be used to determine the current value that the MOUSE_MOVE event handler assigns to the textfield display.

Make hyperlink text actual hyperlinks

We have a couple of CSV files we use for datamerging with InDesign. Some of the text in the CSV has hyperlinks in the paragraph.
Since InDesign does not automatically make hyperlinks in the CSV text actual hyperlinks and there is no special syntax to indicate it is a hyperlink (such as using @ for image paths).....we have decided to wrap any hyperlink text with the <link></link> tag.
InDesign, we want to find all of these <link> tags and replace it with an actual hyperlink. The link maybe an http link, mailto link, or a tel link.
How would I do this with InDesign scripting (prefably javascript or c#)?
I have the following so far in C# (similiar to javascript):
app.FindTextPreferences.FindWhat = "<link>";

How to wrap text around a table

I'm new to Pages. The first thing I tried to do was play with tables, because they are the biggest headache in Microsoft Word. However, I ran into a problem right away--I cannot figure out how to wrap text tightly around a table so that the table is surrounded by text on all four sides.
Does anyone know how to do this? Seems very basic. There is even a button that shows what I want (Text Wrap drop-down --> Around), but when I click on it, nothing happens.

I can recreate the appearance with five hard returns after the first paragraph, or instead, changing the After Paragraph spacing to 116 pt. Did this with Baskerville Regular 12 pt with line spacing set at 1. Same Arrange settings as shown by OP.

Hi, How can I get the text in a large text field to start at the top left of the field rather than at the center of the field? In addition, may one know how to make text wrap in the form as well?

To set the Text alignment properties use "Paragraph" pallet you can make it visible by selecting Window>>Paragraph or Shift+F5
And to allow text wrapping you need to select "Allow Multiple Lines" checkbox under "Object" pallet and "Field" tab. You can make Object pallet visible by selecting Window>>Object or Shift+F7.

If the Created boxes are side by side, use Tab or paragraph format (right aligned). If the second box is at the bottom of the main window use new-line command and create a text element and all the same using print program

Alt text mouseover in hyperlink text?

I use alt tag text in Dreamweaver CS4 to give a text synopsis of the content on the linked page. If possible, how do you make alt text in the mouse-over of a hyperlink, for PDF output?External hyperlink text does give the address as a mouse-over alt text, but how do you modify that alt text?
If this is impossible in InDesign CS4, what would be the most efficient work-around solution? Comment boxes in Acrobat? Flash?

There is no way that I know to define Alt text when creating a hyperlink. However, if a hyperlink points to a URL, when you pause your mouse over the hyperlink in Acrobat or Reader, a tooltip will show the URL the hyperlink points to.
What you might investigate is using buttons. A little-used feature of creating buttons (which can be used to trigger actions of various kinds) is that you can specify what you could call "Alt text" which appears as tooltips when you mouse over them. When you define the button in the Button panel in CS4 or CS5, go to the flyout menu in the Button panel and select PDF Options. There is a Description field there which creates the text for a tooltip. So if the button is used to trigger a sound, for example, you could have the Description read "Double-click to Play". You'll see that text in the tooltip.
