iTunes will only transfer purchases back to your computer using the iTunes > File > Transfer purchases from XXX's iPhone. It will not transfer playlists or non-purchased songs.

The sync is one way - computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases.
The ipod is not a backup device.
You need to copy everything back using your backup copy.

It needs to go through iTunes. But there is no way to transfer songs from iPod to iTunes library (except for music you purchased from iTunes Store). However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do a Google search on "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, add them to your iTunes library. You can then sync your iPhone to the iTunes library.
Alternately, if you sign up for the iTunes Match service, your iTunes music library on your computer will become available from iCloud. You can set your new iPhone (assuming you bought a "new" iPhone) to sync from iCloud, instead of from your computer's iTunes. All of your music will be available wirelessly, wherever you have an Internet connection.

If you’re able to see the playlists on the iPod while it’s connected to iTunes, you should be able to rt-click on the playlist and choose to export. The default file type is .txt but you can change it to one of the other options. Text file works for me.
Name the file anything you want and save it where you can find it. Then to get you playlist back into iTunes, go to File>Library>Import Playlist and nav to your saved playlist file.
The playlist should appear in your list of playlists.

I understand that iTunes can recover music that was purchased through iTunes, but that is not the case. I have the three disk autobook showing in iTunes library as one title , I had to enter the dat amyself since it was not listed on the internet data base, All entries for all tracks match and I have indicated the disk number as one, two or three of three as indicated.
Yet when I sync the iTunes to the iPod I am being presented with each individual track listed in the Audiobook Menu.
I am using the latest version of iTunes and a iPod Classic 160G-- that I purchased three days ago purposefully for the converting of the audiobooks to a portable device since the Library of Congress ( NLS BARD ) books are formatted differently and the player is bulky.
Does anybody hav eany other ideas?
Does anybody have an e-mail address for Apple, preferably iTunes folks?
This is a handicap accessability problem since my wife cannot see and depends on these audio books.

The answer was click View > Show sidebar. Devices and playlists will display in the left sidebar once again. Copy playlists into iPod as usual.

One is to use the manual method which is a little different depending on whether or not you use a Mac or a PC or you can opt to use a 3rd party software that can help you accomplish the task as well. The geniusbar told me what to do, I understood but there is still a problem for me >:/ It's not showing up though. Like "device." Nothing is happening, and I tried as soon as I got home. Then after half an hour, then an hour, then 3 hours. My problem is that it's not showing up! It's stuck in recovery mode! There's still like 25% battery. So I have no idea why.
