How to index a Network Share (AFP) for our workgroup

hi together.
after researching for a digital asset management solution for our acency my point is that neither cumulus, portfolio, mediabeacon or fotostation have the power and features i am looking for.
so i decided to investigate on using iviewmedia with tiger server and spotligte. did anybody have luck already to set something like that up?
thanx christof

i cannot confirm that the index files are maintained by the server. not even the modificationdates or filsizes change. veryfied via terminal.
Sorry, but something's not right. Try again, but try deleting the existing .Spotlight-V100 folder from the share point in question at the server first, then reindex the share point while it's mounted from a client with read & write access. It's important that you issue the mdutil -i on and mdutil -p commands at a client computer, while the share point is mounted as a volume. Although the server will maintain an index in a folder (share point), mdutil doesn't seem to work unless the share point is mounted. (Further, mounting AFP share points at the server itself is not recommended - and not possible from the GUI. You can do it with mount_afp if you want to freeze your machine. )
But, yes, I can confirm that the contents of the .Spotlight-V100 folders do change. It appears that the indexing process happens every minute, so sometimes newly added items won't appear until the next minute has passed.
The manual page for mdutil also indicates that "-p" will store the index on the real volume instead of locally.
And, yes, you can clear the contents of /private/var/db/Spotlight-V100; it's a cache folder, and won't harm your searches of published indices.
Hope this helps.

  • How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?

    How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?
    I am using a QNAP NAS with SMB network shares, which I mount with OS X Mavericks. They are not searchable, as far as I know because of the indexing of network share is by default not activated.
    To force the OS to index them I activated this via mdutils. But this is no solutions. This makes spotlight to index the share once. But I want spotlight to index it always and keep it up to date. I have a huge amount of documents & fotographs, which is very difficult to manage without being searchable.
    Unfortunately the only solution I found in the www was the mdutils-way, which seems not to work, maybe only works not for me.
    I would appreciate any assistance,
    Thank you,
    Stefan

    My thanks to everyone who has contributed to solving this problem here.
    It appears that there still is NOT a good, reliable solution.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.
    I did find this on http://jonathansblog.co.uk/how-to-enable-spotlight-indexing-on-a-network-drive:
    ===================================
    To enable spotlight indexing on a network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i on
    To disable the indexing of a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i off
    To check the status of indexing on a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -s
    ===================================
    And, I found this on the Synology NAS forums:
    cd /Volumes
    mdutil shareName -i on
    mdimport -Vp ./shareName
    where shareName = name of your share
    I have used the mdutil /Volumes/name -i on, and it seems to work.
    But, if I understand it correctly, it is a one-time indexing -- the index is NOT keep up-to-date with changes.
    So, how can we keep the index up-to-date?
    My thought was to schedule a Terminal file to execute each night with the mdutil code.
    Would this work?  If so, how would you setup a scheduled run?
    Would it have to be done on each Mac that accesses the Share?

  • How to find the exact user exit for our requirement?

    Dear Mr. keerthi,
    can you please explain me how to find the exact user exit for our requirement?

    Hi sandip
    There is more than one method in which you can check for user-exits.The following method is used very often.
    <b>How to find the exact user-exit for your requirement.</b>
    1.     You can check the user exists using transaction SE85.
    2.     Repository Information System -> Enhancements -> Customer exits
    3.     You can search the user-exits by package name.
    4.     Double click on each exit name to check the function module exits.
    <b>The procedure to find the package name.</b>
    Execute transaction SE93
    Enter the tcode of the transaction for which you want to check the user exit.
    Example: if you want to find the user-exit for purchase orders while changing, enter ME22n  and press display.
    You will get to see the package name
    But you need to confirm that the user exit will get triggered at the appropriate event.
    ( example: you might want some validations to be done ON SAVE of a purchase order)
    <b>Checking if the user-exit is getting triggered or not.</b>
    1.     Open the user exit function module (that you have got in step 4) in Tcode SE37.
    2.     Click on where used button. In the pop up that immediately appears choose only programs .
    3.     You will get a list of programs. Double click on the program name.
    4.     You will get the list of location where this function module user exit is used.
    5.     Place session break points at each of these location ( at each CALL FUNCTION statement)
    6.     Now go to your transaction ( say change purchase order tcode:Me22n) and check if the user exit is getting triggered on appropriate event.

  • Social networking share widgets for iWeb... any solutions?

    I've been trying in vain for sometime to get one of the social networking share widgets (ShareThis, AddThis, TellaFriend) to work in iWeb 08 and am hoping someone might be able to help.
    With all i am pasting the code provided by these services into the HTML Snippet box. I am using the popup functions, since without doing so requires the HTML Snippet box to be resized unacceptably large obscuring other links on the page. The widgets are published fine, however the link they provide when posting to social networking site or included in an email add an additional extension on the URL that just links to an image of the widget. (i.e. http://web.me.com/fknott/CrystalCove_Properties_2//Home_files/widget1markup.html) the URL should end Home.html.
    Does anyone know how to fix this? the tech folks at each of these sites have been no help at all. Are there any other share widgets aside from these that will work seemlessly with iWeb?
    I really appreciate any help.
    Thank you,
    Troy

    Hello Marc,
    The code generated by ShareThis will not work with iWeb/insert HTML snippet.
    You'll have to put it inside the body tags of every HTML page at the location where you want it to show.
    Attention : the code is inserted after publishing = outside iWeb ! Every time you change a page in iWeb and publish it, you'll need to enter the code again.
    To automate this process you can use [TextWrangler|http://www.barebones.com/products/TextWrangler>
    _ in iWeb on every page you want ShareThis, create a new textbox and add something that is unique and easy to find afterwards when the page is published as a HTML page : ex. AAAAAA,
    _ move the textbox to the location where you want it to show, resize if needed,
    _ publish your website with iWeb,
    _ mount your iDisk in the Finder,
    _ open TextWrangler and the first thing you do is "start recording",
    _ open the first HTML file you see in your Site, ex. index.html (It's OK if that page doesn't have the AAAAAA) +(when you have the ShareThis on a specific Site or Blog only, locate that folder),
    _ in the Search field enter AAAAAA,
    _ in the Replace fiel enter the code provided by ShareThis,
    _ do a "replace in all files in this folder" where you select your Site or Blog folder,
    _ stop recording and save the script for later,
    _ unmount iDisk from the finder.
    Done.
    On my Blog entry about [Favicons|http://www.site49.eu/Leo/Tips4Mac/Entries/2009/2/15_Favicons.html|Add favicons to iWeb websites] you can find some screenshots on how to use TextWrangler as an automated search and mass replace tool.
    Kind regards,

  • How to index a network drive so spotlight can search there as well

    Now i like the speed of the search for Indexed drives but it is useless on my network if i am looking for a special document which is backup on our network spotlight does not find one single document any other search options or tool available.

    I found this page that informs you how to activate indexing on network drives. However this was written during the Tiger days so I'm not sure if this applies any more. Someone in the comments noted that indexing of network drives for spotlight was disabled permanently in Leopard so I'm not sure if that's changed for Snow Leopard.

  • How can I keep network shares mounted?

    With our new SSD (Retina MBP) we're trying to embrace the paradigm of using network storage, yet we keep running into a very aggravating wrinkle. Every time the wind blows, it seems, we lose our network shares. They have to be re-mounted by doing an Apple-K and selecting them from our Time Capsule. First, is it normal to lose shares after closing the MBP for a moment, as when carrying it from one room to another? If it's not then our router is just going, being beyond the age when they're supposed to expire. If it is normal, is there anything to help make them more robust and keep them mounted? MountWatcher didn't seem to do the trick.

    your network shares should stay mounted on your desktop, unless to specficially tell it to unmount after a certain time of inactivity or unless you loose connectivity.  I have 2 network shares that unmount after they expire idle time other than that they stay mounted

  • How we can inactive the credit account for our customer

    Hi Gurus,
    Can you please let me know, Where we can deactivate the credit account for our customer?
    Thanks in advance
    Mayank Tyagi

    Hi Mayank,
            As per my Understanding.
    here you are trying to enter the payer code different as sold to party.
    if its so,
    both ur customer-sold to & Payer has credit master records ( check in FD32).
    both might have maintained different credit limits.
    so when you enter the payer different as customer, based on credit management configuration - systems check for the Payer as well as Sold to's credit records, if both r different then system prompts this error message.
    As i know, it wont allow you to proceed further.
    this is the reason in many cases your sold to & payer will be same.there could be chance, that your ship to will be different.
    my query is: - why you are trying to enter 2 different ( sold to & payer) partners?
    any doubts plz let me know.
    hope it clears,

  • How to access a Network Share between two servers in same data centre

    I have two dedicated servers (both Windows 2012 Server) hosted in a data centre somewhere.   I want to share a folder on one server with the other server, but it's obviously not as straight forward as one might think.  My servers are called "Maximus"
    and "Apprentice".
    On Maximus I shared a folder by right clicking on it and choosing "Share with... / Specific People", I then typed in the name of a local user account which also exists on Apprentice with the same name and password.  (so each server has a local
    user account with the same name and password).
    So then on Apprentice, I was hoping I could access the share (while being logged in as this user with whom the folder was shared) by simply typing  "\\ipaddress\sharename" into the address bar in file explorer.  Unfortunately it comes
    back with "Windows can not access [ip address]".
    Now, I do have a website setup on the IP address for Maximus.  This is actually the reason I want to create this share.  I need the second server for load balancing and need to share IIS config as well as the website itself.  (So I will need
    two shares eventually, but for now I'm just trying to get one to work).  I don't know if the fact that the ip address is pointing to the website is causing me problems here or if it's something else.
    Are there any network gurus out there who can tell me what the issue is and how to resolve it?

    I can ping both servers in either direction, but I believe I may have found the problem.  Apparently my host is blocking port 445 which Windows wants to use to connect to the share and they will not unblock it.
    Is there a way to connect to the share through a different port?
    To my knowledge, you cannot change the port. However, you can try disabling your security software for testing. If this fixes the problem then you need to adjust your security software configuration so that traffic on this port is not blocked or filtered.

  • How to set NTFS and share permissions for Users share for home directories in Server 2012

    Users? Is the following older article the correct permissions I need?
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/274443

    Hi RJO22,
    You can choose configure the Folder Redirection, Folder Redirection enables you to redirect the location of specific folders within user profiles to a new location, such as
    a shared network location. Folder redirection is used in the process of administering user profiles and roaming user profiles. You can configure Folder Redirection using the Group Policy Management Console to redirect specific user profile folders, as well
    as edit Folder Redirection policy settings.

  • Accessing network shares in an exiting workgroup from / to win10 with MS account (currently 10049)

    This is a migration test. Here is a larger network containing
    - RTOS-something video recorder
    - XP machines regular and POS
    - NAS running some Linux variants
    - Win7 machines
    - Win8.X machines
    - firewall/dhcp.
    They form a workgroup with a number of public shares and some protected shares. This Win10 PC (10049) with a Microsoft account can't access them and doesn't show computers in the workgroup. Other Win10 machines (10041) with local accounts can. I can ping
    all devices and where http is available, that works too. This PC sometimes complains about a conflict between 'his' workgroup and the existing one.
    Inspected HKLM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Lanman* , /NetBIOS, /NetBT and I believe the values stored could be OK.
    All relevant services have been started. This PC is a member of the workgroup.
    Only problem found: DcpSvc returns error 1813 but I think this is only a display problem of services.msc not finding a valid description.
    How can I enable this machine (with the ms account) to interact with the workgroup's resources?

    Hi defuser.defuser,
    If you disassociate the Microsoft Account, can you see other computers in your workgroup?
    You can check if you turn on the network discovery setting under your profile:
    Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

  • How do I pre-activate windows 7 for our customers?

    We are an oem system builder deploying windows 7 and 8.1 to our customers. The microsoft documentation suggests that we should be able to activate windows on their behalf as long as the machine is then sysprepped so the user is presented with the windows
    welcome screen.
    Here is the text from the "how sysprep works" page at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744512(v=ws.10).aspx
    "Activating Windows Before Shipping to a Customer
    Most customers can easily manage activation after receiving their computers. But if you prefer, you can activate the software on behalf of your customers, making it easier for them to start
    using their new computers. After activation is completed, most users will not need to activate their installation again.
    To activate Windows for your customer, use the unique Product Key from the certificate of authenticity (COA) label that is affixed to the specific computer, and activate the computer on
    behalf of the end user. Run the sysprep /oobe command to prepare the computer for delivery to the customer."
    In practice this is not working. I can activate the system in audit mode but after running sysprep /oobe /shutdown the product key is removed and the computer is no longer activated. I know
    that a key can be stored in an unattend.xml file and used with sysprep but any of the solutions to do so indicate that the key should be entered in the specialize or generalize passes. Neither of these passes are processed after running sysprep /oobe /shutdown.
    Sorry for the long winded post but I've been at this for a few days and I'm getting nowhere.

    That should work if the answer file is used to install or if sysprep is run with /generalize. The specialize pass is not processed during oobe or on first boot.
    I attempted a test with an unnattend.xml file that has the oobeSystem and specialize passes. After oobe and after the computer starts this is what the unattend file looks like:
    <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>
    <unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend">
    <settings pass="oobeSystem" wasPassProcessed="true">
    </settings>
    <settings pass="specialize">
    <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
    <ProductKey>xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx</ProductKey>
    </component>
    </settings>
    </unattend>
    As you can see wasPassProcessed is set to true for the oobesystem pass but not for the specialize pass.
    And of course the product key prompt is shown.
