How to install Windows Server 2008 (dualboot) on a PC with Windows 8.1 already on it?

Hi, I bought a new PC with preinstalled Windows 8. Now I need to install Windows Server 2008. Anyone can advise me how to
do it? It has to be in dual boot, in Virtual Machine the display is way too small

You should check out the Boot-to-VHD capability.
Here is how we do it in a lab environment which we got from a Microsoft lab:
-Verify your computer is running Windows 7 or later.
-Verify you have full administrator rights to your currently installed operating system.
-Verify hard disk encryption or other pre-boot security is turned off.
-Confirm that hardware virtualization technology and memory protection are both enabled in your computer's BIOS setup.
Now we just setup the a VHD with an operating system on it (can even use a downloaded server 180 day trial VHD if you are in a rush). Then go to Disk Management and select Attach VHD and point to the file. Note the drive letter that is assigned to the
mounted VHD.
Run a command prompt as administrator and type: " bcdedit /export BCDBackup.bak " to create an exported backup of your boot loader configuration. Now type bcdboot [drive]:\windows.
Now to test your dual-boot configuration, restart your computer and select the new OS boot option.
An optional last step would be when complete to restore your boot loader by running "bcdedit /import BCDBackup.bak" and delete any VHD files.
A more detailed guide written for Windows 7 but still applies for Windows 8 can be found at:

Hope that helps.

Brian is right, for mange the Server 2008r2 sp1 we recommend use the Windows 7 or 7.1 platform.

Assuming your rig can support virtual machines, you can use Hyper-V and run another OS there.
Better practice however is to use a dedicated machine and use remote desktop to the server.

but still I am facing issue. Please let me know whether SQL server 2008 express edition is compatible with  Windows server 2008 R2 Standard. If not then pls let me know the proper steps to install it.

    Hello,
Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2008 is required to be compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2.
Please download QL Server 2008 Express with SP1 included from the following link:

We want to activate Windows Server 2008 R2 on the system where trial version is already activated,

    Hi,
Based on your description, I’m a little confused with this issue.
If you mean that convert the Windows Server 2008 R2 evaluation version to a full version, we can get following
details from this KB: Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 evaluation version
Question: Can you convert the evaluation version to a full version?
Answer: Although this conversion is not blocked, we do not support an upgrade from an evaluation version
to a full version or changing the product key to a full version key. Since there is no support for any type of upgrade you must do a install to new directory using non-evaluation media. If you change the product key to Full Version, the visual evaluation references
in Winver and as displayed in Slmgr /DLV output are removed, but the WLMS service remains on the system and the media retains its evaluation status.
Meanwhile, please refer to the following similar thread and check if can help you.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard - Compatibility issues with Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hello,
We used as a test a box on which we installed Windows Server 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition. No Service pack was installed. It worked perfect.
Now we try to do it on another box and all of the sudden there is compatibility issue when we try to instal SQL Server. We can still install SQL Server by clicking "Continue without getting help".
Where can this come from? If it is hardware related what are the thing I should look at?
    Thanks all

    Hello,
Adding to Shanky suggestion, you can perform a slipstream installation of SQL Server 2008 R2 + SP3 to make SQL Server
2008 R2 compatible with the newer operating system, as explained on the following post.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/petersad/archive/2011/07/13/how-to-slipstream-sql-server-2008-r2-and-a-sql-server-2008-r2-service-pack-1-sp1.aspx

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS service issue with BitLocker

I recently installed BitLocker on a Windows Server 2008 Platform. I did not encrypt the boot partition because the server hardware BIOS did not have the necessary requirements to encrypt the system drive.
The Server roles are ADSM, DC and File Server. For DC operation I am also running the DNS service.
When I installed the DNS role I was prompted to install the Log files on a different volume than the OS. I did this, but unfortunately, it was the same volume that was encrypted.
Since I could not encrypt the system disk, the encrypted volume must be unlocked via password in order to mount. Here in lise my problem.
When I do a full reboot of the server, I get to the point in the boot process where my mouse is visible and operational (this would be just before the Windows OS logo displays, I believe), then the server reboots. On the next boot up I am given the diagonstics
and recovery dialog because the OS failed to boot.
I believe the failure is the DNS service trying to launch, but because the log files are on the encrypted drive and it has not been unlocked, the system sees this as a security problem and reboots
Does this make sense? If it does, is there a way to boot 2008 R2 with the DNS service disabled, say with the original install disk in recovery mode?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this system cannot be booted in its current state.
    Peter C. Hesse Network/Systems Administrator

    Hi,
I believe you mean the Active Directory Logs not the DNS logs, because these are necessary to startup a domain controller, because the AD database depends on these logs.
So if you have AD logs on a different partition and that is encrypted with Bitlocker you could probably automatically unlock it.
So you did not encrypt OS partition because the server does not have a TPM fully compliant chip ?
    manage-bde /?
    manage-bde -autounlock -enable Driveletter:
But you have to be able to boot server normal mode I am not sure if the command can be used in DSRM mode.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 BSOD 0x1a with CLFS.sys

    Hello,
I've got a BSOD on a Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 installed. Analyzed the dump and could
    see a Bug-check of 0x1a which means "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT".
Further analysis on this dump shows me, that this probably is caused by the CLFS.sys, which
is the Common Log File System Driver. This CLFS.sys is installed with date:
    Tue Jul 14 01:19:57 2009
I have now searched trough MS Support pages and resources and also the Internet, but I found no
information about an update for this or a newer version. It's nearby impossible to find newer versions
for specific  files in i.e. Hot-fixes.
Do you know this issue with the 0x1a BSOD and CLFS.sys and/or do you know a newer version ?
Any help would be very appreciated!
Thanks and regards plus have a nice day !

    Hi Tino,
Regarding to Bug Check 0x1A, please refer to following article.
    Bug Check 0x1A: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
Did you install any third-party application in this problematic server? Would you please let me know whether
the BSOD issue occurred regularly? Or just occurred suddenly? If the BSOD issue occurred regularly, please
perform a clean boot and check if this BSOD issue still exists.
In addition, please check if necessary updates need to be installed and drivers need to be updated. Please
run sfc /scannow command to scan all protected system files and check if find errors.
As you know, troubleshoot this kind of kernel crash issue, we need to analyze the crash dump file to narrow down the root cause of the issue. Actually, it is not effective

  • Re-use Hyper V VM built in Windows Server 2008 R2 host in a new Windows Server 2012 host

    Hi Forum members,
I was assigned a Windows Server 2008 R2 host machine with Hyper-V which I used to build many VM's for testing.  This host machine now is going to be replaced with a new Windows Server 2012 host machine.  Is it possible for me to continue
to use those VM's without any migration (e.g. is it possible to import or simply move the *.vhd + *.avhd files from the 2008 Server to 2012 Server and use them)?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Hien

That is the official statement of 'support'
They will run, and you may need to do some custom configuration (such as using a legacy nic) but you can't call MSFT support and say your Server 2003 VM is broken on Hyper-V 2012 R2
The act of importing the configuration and linking to the VHD and snapshots will work.
The act of booting the VM and having the OS in the VM 100% happy is not automatic, but should work.
It becomes a question of where do you place the risk.

  • How to configure Sql Server 2008 R2 for debugging without disabling Windows Firewall?

When I try to debug a procedure in Sql Server 2008 R2 I get a dialog box telling me to unblock some ports.
    >>
The Windows Firewall on this machine is currently blocking remote debugging.  Remote debugging requiers that the debugger be allowed to receive informatino from the network.  Remote debugging also requires DCOM (TCP Port 135) and IPSEC (UDP 4500
    / UDP 500) be unblocked.
    <<
I went to the Windows Firewall and added some new Inbound rules for each of the specified ports (in the images below.  But after this and rebooting entire computer -- I still get this dialog box when I want to go into debug mode from SSMS.  I can
actually kind of debug standalone code in the SSMS window if I cancel the dialog box.  But I can't debug an actual stored procedure -- which is what I need to do.  I also noticed that my server has an IP address instead of LocalHost.  This is
not a public Server -- it's my private development machine which is on a peer to peer network (with one other workstation), but I don't need that workstation to be able to access this server..  Would localholst make a difference for debugging?  How
should I configure the sql server?  The firewall?
    Rich P

Use PRINT and SELECT for debugging. That's what I do. I used to play with the debugger in SQL 2000 and older days, but I realised that I spent more time on getting it to work that I gained from using it.
I thought about that.  I guess that IS the way to go.  Very well.  Thank you for the suggestion.   Although, when the debugger does work in the regular window (not a stored proc because it doesn't work there) the debugger IS nice.
For debugging my proc I am thinking I will insert param vals into a test collection table for now.  One obscure error I am getting with a particular proc -- in a When loop on one parameter I get the "value will be truncated" error -- but everything
is set to accept 1000 characters and none of the source data even comes close to 1000 characters.  I have isolated at what point the error occurs and which section of data where the error is occurring but I have not isolated the cause of the error.
I cannot reproduce the error when I run the procedure by hand in a regular query window with the exact same code.  The error only occurs when the code is run in the stored proc.

    I can't open the database version 661, because SQL Server 2005 - 612

    Hi,
You just installed SQl server management studio I guess and when you connected the system already had SQL Server 2005 and it connected to it.
If you are sure you installed express with advanced services (2008 r2) you need to go to Start..all program..can you see SQL server 2008 r2 listed ?
Now open SSMS for 2008 r2 and instead of connecting with default instance look for other instances in drop down in server name you would fine that for SQL Server 2008 r2 connect to that

  • Windows Server 2008 driver for LaserJet 4100 with envelope printer

I have a new Windows 2008 Server 32 and a handful of HP printers.  I need a driver for the LaserJet 4100 with an envelope feeder.  The universal driver doesn't appear to recognize (or give an option to find) the envelope feeder.  The old drivers I used on the previous server won't install on the 2008 box.
