How to launch Calc Scripts from Analyzer

Hello all,Just wondering if that there is an easier way to launch calcs from analyzer... what are some of the ideas -using a executable lauch button, hyperlink, via Analyzer API? Any other ideas appreciated. regards, Ray

This message has resolved my query by setting a larger MAX_PROPERTY_VALUE_LENGTH to "30"Thanks.I have come across this problem before. If it is the same problem it is to do with the length of your calc scripts. Obviously Essbase calc scripts are stored as .csc files, if these are too big Analyzer can't read them. This issue is caused by the ADM layer that Analyzer uses. Search on the server for a file called adm.properties .You should find the file in the following directory \\hyperion\analyzer\adm\lib .You may find you have more than one copy on the Server in which case edit them all. In the file find a string called MAX_PROPERTY_VALUE_LENGTH. You will find this is currently to 4 (this respresents 4kb). Increase the value to say 20. Save changes, restart Analyzer Service and hopefully this should have fixed the problem. I would love to know if this works. Paul Armitage. Analitica Ltd. www.analitica.co.uk

Cannot run calc script from Analyzer

I just did an upgrade from 6.5 to 6.5.1 and I am unable to run one calc script on a particular database. I can run other calc scripts, just not this one. I get no error message or anything, I can keep clicking the calc button, but it does not run.Strangely, when I click the calc button, Analyzer puts a text file in the directory \\analyzer\appserver\bin with the user name (ex. gcrisci.txt) When you open this file, it is the calc script from Essbase I was attempting to run.I recall running into a problem like this in the past due to the size of the calc script. I thought the solution was to go into Analyzer.properties file and increase the MaxDataCellLimit values. The default is 50000, I've increased it up to 500000 with no resolution. So, I'm thinking maybe this isn't the fix.Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?Thank you.

Here are the roles that i assigned my user and he can view/launch the calc scripts from Planning Web without actually being an admin( i think)
Analytic Servers : server access
Business Rules: Administrator
Planning App : Interactive User
APS : Provisioning Manager
I would also like to conver the calc script to a BR as suggested, but not sure why i see no users available in the Business Rules-> administration tab.
As indicated above, the use has been provisioned as a BR admin!
Also, i tried refreshing the app with filters, refreshing the user list from BR->admin(right mouse), de-provision and re-provision the user! Any ideas??

with help from people in this forum, I successfully debugged the syntax in a shell script I wrote (my syntactical faux pas had to do with sending a multi-line mail message from a bash script).
I can manually launch my script from Terminal's command line, and it works perfectly (well, at least it does exactly what I told it to do:). I try to launch it via cron, and it doesn't appear to ever launch.
In /var/cron/tabs/root, the pertinent line of text reads:
00 22 * * * /usr/local/customShellScripts/script.sh
so it is supposed to launch daily at 10PM.
Other jobs listed in /var/cron/tabs/root do run, because I get emails to my postfix admin account saying that they do. However, none of those other jobs are shell scripts; they are stuff like:

The directory listing for /var/cron/tabs/root reads:

for debug, the first two lines of script.sh read:

but the file /foo never gets created. I tried using just "touch /foo" and that didn't work either.
Also, since the script has a lot of calls to "echo," "expr," "date," "cut," "awk," etc., if I ever get cron to execute the script past the shebang line, do I have to preface all those calls with their full path? Or can I do something like in the old /etc/crontab file, where they defined a path variable up front
PATH=/etc:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
and the script will be smart enough to look in those directories for the appropriate executables?
But, getting back to the first problem, I am obviously overlooking something very basic, which is not surprising since I'm self-taught (and I guess, Apple Unix Discussions forum taught) at this unix thing and shell scripting. So, can anybody bail me out here...again?

You bailed me out, dude! Apparently, my difficulties stemmed from me trying to directly edit /var/cron/tabs/root with pico. Never seemed to bother the other stuff, but it did this time. I am totally inept with vi, the default editor for crontab -e, which is why I had cheated before, and directly edited the /var/cron/tabs/root, el.al., so I had to find out how to
export EDITOR='pico'
in my .bashrc
After having done that, no problem, except for a latent programming logic bug that has reared its ugly head (my script is doing some date manipulation with today's and yesterday's date, and my script crashed and burned on the month change and with stuff related to single-digit date sequence numbers <10).
But, hey, I learned how to reset my default editor, so as to make life easier for me when it comes time to dorking with crontab files, and I learned that when the crontab file says "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE - edit the master and reinstall," it means it!

Can "Planners" run calc script from the Planning web?

This is probably a really naive question.
However, can planners run a simple calc script(created in Essbase/AAS) from Workspace/Planning Web? If so what access would they be need to setup in Shared Service?
Or do we have to convert the calc script into a Business Rule and then grant access to the users?

Both way you can do.. Difference is - if you copy paste to another folder script dependencies will not move with the same( ie Assets added), whereas if you export and import the script all dependencies will be correlated automatically

Calc another calc script from a calc script or business rule

is there a way to call a common calc script segment from other calc scripts or business rules. I do not want to replicate common code in multiple business rules. This common code updates the Essbase database, so it would need to take Essbase members as parameters and be able issue calculation commands. I do not think you can call another calc script from within a calc script. An alternative would be to write a MaxL script that strings multiple calc scripts together.Good luck.

My example below, using just the SMO and not breaking up the batches, the ExecuteWithResults give the following error when the .sql file contains a GO. My script files are as simple as a DECLARE and then a GO.

Create a New Calc Script from VB.

Does anyone know how to create a calc script using the VB Essbase API? We are going thru a large modification. Most of our calc scripts are stored on an oracle database. The idea is to send the stored scripts to a text file and then using the essbase api to create new calc scripts based on the the text files. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.Thanks

This shouldn't be too difficult. You should be able to either read your existing script straight from your Oracle database using ODBC & ADO Recordset or from a test file using a scripting.filesystemobject and then make any changes using the VB code. Then use either the EsbBeginCalc/EsbSendString/EsbEndCalc or EsbCalc functions in the VB API to run them. I've used this sort of approach in the past to allow users to substitute specific members into 'template' calc scripts at runtime. Hope this helps.Mark Rixon www.analitica.co.uk

We have used an Excel VBA which launch an calculation script from a STRING using the VBA Add-In function "EsbCalc".
We would like to migrate to Smartview VBA functions.....
The calc-script string has "parameters" which are modified at run-time...
I have found the function HypExecuteCalcScript - but seems that use as parameters ONLY the calc-script name...
Is it any VBA function in SmartView which launch a calc-script string (not a calc-script name) ?

A tip I just learned at Kaleidoscope 2010* is that one can create a calc script consisting entirely of a substitution variable. In other words, a calc script can look like this:

Smart View VBA does have a function for changing or creating substitution variables (HypSetSubstitutionVariable). You could create a calc script and subvar in your database as above. Then, at run time, set that subvar to your calc string with HypSetSubstitutionVariable and execute the calc script with HypExecuteCalcScript.
Quick test (11.1.1.3) shows that this really works.
I can't remember privileges required to create or set subvars vs execute calc strings off the top of my head - might be an issue (I ran as an admin). Also this approach doesn't support concurrent users, unless they each have a calc script and subvar to themselves. Still, depending on your exact situation, this might be a feasible workaround.

i have two applications (Planning and HPCM). Both 11.1.1.3.
I write a calc.script in HPCM (with XREF) that provide me a data from Planning to HPCM. Now i am trying to execute a script in planning. So that a planning user can load the data by clicking a business rule.
Is it possible?

VB is a system wide scripting engine, so you can run it from outside InDesign. You create an InDesign object to address InDesign. This can be done by another application as well.
Javascript is a scripting engine provided soley by InDesign. Unless you have some method of telling InDesign to run the script, it's a non-starter. You can probably create a dll to tell InDesig to run a javascript, but I think a simple VB is WAY simpler...
All you really need to do is write a very short VB and feed the javascript to the VB as a string anc call app.doScript() providing the javascript to the doScript method.

On newer cron versions, you can add an environment to the crontab file itself that needs to be set before executing the scheduled command.
Whatever method - make sure you have ORACLE_HOME set, that the path includes ORACLE_HOME/bin, that ORACLE_SID is set (if not using a TNS alias) and so on.
But I agree with Sybrand... crontab is not the best place for running SQL or PL/SQL code. That should reside in the database as named code (e.g. stored procs) and be executed via DBMS_JOB or DBMS_SCHEDULE.
Less moving parts that way. No external dependancies. And will work on any Oracle server, irrespective of the o/s used and whether or not the relevant o/s user has batch/cron/etc privs to do the deed.

How to run a script from Calculation Manager

I would like to know how to run a script made by using Calculation Manager. I have converted a simple rule script which has just one statement(HS.EXP "A#Sales = 100") in "Sub Calculate()" by using FMRulesMigrator.exe and then imported, deployed to an application. when I execute "Calculate" from a Data Grid, the rule didn't take effect to application data. If I load the script by using classic rule editor, it works fine.
Is there anything I have to know to run a rule script which is made by using Calculation Manager?

Have you restarted Essbase server after increasing cache sizes?
Also verify if there are any calculations that are dependent on dynamic calc members.
Assuming Entity is a Sparse dimension, you can use FIX instead of IF in the calc script.
FIX(@UDA("ENTITY","CNY"))

ENDFIX
...similarly for rest of entities.
Also you can use USD instead of LOCAL as you had already copied LOCAL to USD.

in similarly way you can try to fine tune the script for better performance.
Try these things and come up with the outcomes.
