How to migrate 4 TB Oracle databse RAC 10g R2 from Solaris to AIX

We have a datawarehouse Oracle RAC 10g 2 with 3 nodes (about 4TB) on Solaris 9 and we want to migrate it to AIX -- is RMAN or Transportable Tablespaces the best solution? How does it work? What are the possible problems?
Note: Actually RMAN is not use to backup.
Thank you

Hello,
Ideally RMAN is best option but in this case it will be complex but very possible. Cross platform restore using RMAN
See following oracle doumentation for more details and you can search metalink for more stepwise detailed instructions

  • Migration Oracle db from solaris to aix

    Hi,
I would like to ask you for a best way how to do..
We have a large international Oracle migration effort from Solaris to AIX. We have some challenges where a standard export/import will not work due to the extended distance between sites. As an example we are migrating from Japan to Texas.
What is the best tool to use?
I looked around and I found Oracle Golden Gate.
do you have any other idea?
    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Tom

I dont have more info about the project but there will databases (maybe 500) with different sizes (x MB - x TB) and there could be single and RAC.
I am looking for any tool/utility where I will be able to prepare migration document which could be used as baseline for migration all of them.I do not think it will be possible to use one approach for all DBs in your case. You should split DBs into groups you may use different approaches.
    Among 500 DBs will be:
    a) databases with "low availability" requirements where long downtime is possible. so you can stop app, take an export, import into remote db, re-target app to new db.
    b) databases where only short downtime is possible. then you can use DataGuard or some replication technologies (OGG, Shareplex, DataCurrents) to make "final sync".
    c) databases with "high availability" requirements where NO downtime is possible. Here you can use some replication technologies (i.e. DataCurrents and may be others can do it). First you copy data to remote DB and "remember" SCN you got the source dump, then you keep replicating all changes starting from this SCN. As soon as remote DB becomes in sync, you quickly switch the app to new DB.
But I never did migration accross states (more than 1000 miles).Distance does not matter. You should have good bandwidth network connection between sites.

  • Migrating from Solaris to AIX

    Hi
We are planning to migrate from Solaris to AIX. What document will help me to follow?
If possible send me exact link.
Our current environment is R/3 4.6c, Oracle 9.2.3 and Solaris 5.9
Please let me know as quickly as possible.
    Thank-you

    > We are planning to migrate from Solaris to AIX. What document will help me to follow?
    Start with
    http://service.sap.com/osdbmigration
    --> FAQ
where you will see, that you need a certified migration consultant on-site to do that migration.
    > Our current environment is R/3 4.6c, Oracle 9.2.3 and Solaris 5.9
since that version is out of support for a long time there are no more official migration guides available, that must be covered by consulting. Technically it will be done by R3SETUP with DBMIG.R3S as parameter file.

  • Moving an Oracle Database from Solaris to AIX

    Hi all,
I have been asked to move an SAP system using an Oracle database from
Solaris to AIX (on an IBM P590).
Most of the move is straightforward, except the Oracle database
transfer. It would make my life so much easier if I could simply
restore the Oracle datafiles from an off-line backup of the Solaris
system and then link it to a clean install of the Oracle binaries on
the AIX system, rather than have to do an export and import.
Is this possible, after all the AIX Oracle binaries would be the same
patch level as the Solaris binaries and the file systems would be the
same. Also as it would be an offline backup we would not have to do
any recovery, so the archive logs and the original redo logs would not
    be required.
Does anyone know if this is possible or has actually executed it
successfully, any hints and tips on the gotchas would be greatly
    appreciated.
    TIA
    Chris aka BoobBoo

    Hello Chris,
unfortunately you didn't write anything about your oracle version or your backup mechanism like RMAN,etc..
I think you will use Solaris on a SPARC architecture and not on x86? (same endian)
If you have RMAN and 10gR2 then you can use the "Database Transport Across Same Endian Platforms":
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/wnbradv.htm
    > RMAN now supports the CONVERT DATABASE command, which can prepare a whole database for transport to a new platform that uses the same endian format. Database transport across platforms provides a faster and easier way to move databases from one platform to another than previous solutions requiring the use of Data Pump.
Metalinknote #413586.1 has a FAQ and a step on step guide.
If you have created your tablespaces under Oracle 10g (no oracle upgrade from previous releases!!) you can use the "Transportable tablespace feature" and copy the database files. SAP has published note #1035051 for that.

  • Oracle migration from solaris to AIX

    Hi,
We have a activity of a migration of oracle 9i Solaris database (800G in size) to AIX oracle 10g database, we use RMAN and exp/imp as a backup method. What are the efficient and fastest methods to do this and i what way?
    Thanks
    Jaffy

    Hi
As your database is large so try transportable tablespace features for different platform migration. If endian format is same you don't need to use RMAN for datafile conversion. If endian format is different you need to convert datafile.
You will get information about supported platform from V$TRANSPORTABLE_PLATFORM .

  • When Oracle BI Discoverer 10g will be released on AIX?

    Hi
    If anyone knows ?
I need it to prepare project plan.
    thnx
    slawonzo

    Hi Asim,
The instructions for integrating Discoverer with IDM/Portal are in the Discoverer doc listed above. Most people shutdown the Discoverer 4i server, upgrade the EUL to 10g, then install the 10g Discoverer software and configure the apps to use it. Details are all in the doc.
    1. Install Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2)
1.1. Install OracleAS Identity Management Infrastructure 10g (10.1.4.0.1)
You must install OracleAS Identity Management Infrastructure 10g (10.1.4.0.1) on a standalone server or in a separate ORACLE_HOME on an existing application tier server node. Follow the instructions in the Oracle Application Server 10g Installation Guide for your operating system platform.
1.2. Install Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2) type Business Intelligence and Forms
You must install Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2) installation type Business Intelligence and Forms in a seperate ORACLE_HOME from the previously installed OracleAS Infrastructure. During installation of Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2) type Business Intelligence and Forms you will be prompted for Oracle Internet Directory details. Please provide your Oracle Application Server 10g (10.1.4.0.1) Infrastructure hostname and port number as configured in step 1.1.

  • Oracle RAC 10g/11g on Solaris 10 OS

    Hi Experts et all
I am now pretty sure I am confusing my self a lot and probably this solution exist.. or may be not ..
When we have an ACTIVE - PASSIVE Clustering of, say Veritas Cluster 5.0 on Solaris 10 OS running on SPARC Platform, could we configure an ACTIVE - ACTIVE Oracle database cluster on top of this?
In other words , I will configrue Node A and Node B in ACTIVE-PASSIVE Configuration using VERITAS Cluster. Then I will want to configure many oracle database on it in such a way that its running on Node A as well as on Node B. Is this possible ? How does the Oracle configuration change here if it is possible?
I understand that for a database to be ACTIVE, its instance needs to be accessing data files, control files and redo log files continuously.
So if the Oracle database is to be in ACTIVE-ACTIVE Cluster, all its instances should also be accessing necessary filesystems which have these files.
When OS Admin says that it is ACTIVE - PASSIVE Clustering from Veritas, I understand the Filesystems are not accessible from Passive node. So I am not able to understand how can the database be active on that node. Is it possible?
Please share your thoughts, ideas, experiences.. etc.
    Regards!
    Sarat

Yes.. I absolutely agree with you.. If I need to run ACTIVE - ACTIVE Databases, I must have all these resources available on all clustered nodes. In other words, the OS cluster Solution should also be an ACTIVE - ACTIVE. At least, I will need to use oracle clusterware and configure database on ASM and to make sure we have hardware to support this functionality before hand, if the cluster filesystems are not available.
When I modify this approach a little bit, I could go ahead configure ACTIVE - ACTIVE Solaris or Veritas Clusters (if thats okay with the clients in terms of cost), and use clusterware additonally before configuring ACTIVE - ACTIVE RAC databases. I will have all databases required by the application to run multiple instances on the cluster. In other words ACTIVE - ACTIVE every thing until the database layer and let the application use them as it would require.
JDBC Drivers could be a worry factor. I believe the JDBC used by websphere applications behave like thin clients and hence will not be able to utilize the features like load balencing, TAF which are fascinating features Oracle 10g RAC has provided. Perhaps, if I could try get these websphere app behave just like an oracle client/thick client, would be a better answer but these questions will need to go to websphere folks ..
just in case if one of you have seen this happening?
I learned some time ago... "Administrators should never leave their hope ..there could always be a new learning round the corner" :-)
    Heartfelt thanks.

  • How to migrate my oracle forms 9i and reports application..

    Hi,
we have this budgeting application developed in oracle forms 9i,reports integrated in oracle portal. Now we have to move this application from oracle 9i to oracle 10g and have to integrate it with new portal again.
Can anybody pls help me how do I migrate this application to oracle 10g AS and integrate it with portal so exact replica which was on oracle 9i portal is there on my new oracle 10g integrated within the portal.

Are you currently deployed on the web or as c/s. Generally speaking for upgrading Forms its a case of open in the builder, regenerate and run. For c/s to web there may be some extra steps to do but generally speaking most Forms will run out of the box.
    CHeck out otn.oracle.com/formsupgrade
There is also a batch option to help you and there are of course Oracle partners who can help as well.

  • How many maximum nodes possible in RAC 10g

    Hi,
This is for my knowledge only.
Any idea that how many RAC nodes is possible in 10g maximum.
    Thanks and regards,
    Chitrasen

    Hi Chitrasen :
    From MetaLink:
"How many nodes are supported in a RAC Database?:
With 10g Release 2, we support 100 nodes in a cluster using Oracle Clusterware, and 100 instances in a RAC database. Currently DBCA has a bug where it will not go beyond 63 instances. There is also a documentation bug for the max-instances parameter. With 10g Release 1 the Maximum is 63. In 9i it is platform specific due to the different clusterware support by vendors. See the platform specific FAQ for 9i."
So, for 10g R2, looks like 63... lots more than most sites will ever use, I suspect!

  • How to front-end Oracle Application Server 10g with Apache 2.0

    Hello,
I have a seperate apache tier from my oracle app tier and I want to use my compiled apache as a web front-end for oracle apps. I have a completely default configuration at the moment.
The only documentation I have been able to find on Oracle's site is in regard to using mod_oc4j.so with Oracle HTTP server.
Is a compiled build of apache supported with mod_oc4j?
Where can I get the mod_oc4j.so module for apache?
Is there any good documentation I can use for installing it?

You mean to say, you found mod_oc4j.so module on Application Server CD ?
It will surely be there, cos it's an Oracle supplied module.
The Oracle HTTP Server is based on Apache 1.3 web server.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25221_04/web.1013/b25211/overview.htm#sthref12
If you already have an Application Server 10g installation then go to:
    $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/libexecTake mod_oc4j.so, mod_rewrite.so modules from here.
LoadModule mod_oc4j in httpd.conf file of Apache:
    LoadModule rewrite_module libexec/mod_rewrite.so
    LoadModule oc4j_module libexec/mod_oc4j.so
Make sure to load mod_rewrite.so before mod_oc4j.
    Restart Apache.
