How to nat subnets before establishing site to site ipsec vpn tunnel?
Hello,
Coming across requirement which is new to me as I have not done this setup. Details as follows. Hope some1 can help.
Requirement: nat existing subnets to 192.168.50.0/24 subnet which is allowed at another firewall.
Existing device: Cisco 5510 where I need to do this NAT.
Existing scenario in short: I have created vlans on asa by creating sub interfaces.
Changes done: added new sub int for 192.168.50.0. Added new object as 192.168.50.0 . Now done with creation of acl where traffic from 192.168.50.0 to remote subnets allowed. In NAT object sections done nating 1 to 1 I.e. existing subnet to 192.168.50.0
Done ipsec vpn setup inc phase 1 & 2.
Now tried to ping remote hosts but not reachable.
Pls advice how to make it work.
I dont any router next to asa 5510. Asa is in routed mode. Next hop to asa is isp's mux.
Hello. Pls find my answers inline
I first got the picture that the NAT network is 192.168.50.0/24 and some other networks should be NATed to this.
Answer: Thats correct.
Later on it seems that you have configured this to some interface on the ASA?
Answer: Yes as I have defined vlan's on ASA itself. i.e. other subnets too i.e. 10.x series & 192.168.222.x series. I used Ethernet 0/0 as main interface for all LAN networks and have created sub interfaces i.e. vlan's on it. Using 3COM switch down to ASA to terminate those vlan's & distribute to unmanaged switches. Due to port limitations on ASA I have configured vlans on ASA itself. Ethernet 0/2 is my WAN interfacei.e. ISP link terminates on Eth 0/2 port.
So are you attempting to NAT some other LAN networks to this single NAT network before the traffic heads to the L2L VPN connection on your ASA?
Answer: Yes thats right. Attempting to NAT multiple networks to single NAT before traffic head to L2L VPN connecting from my ASA 5510 to remote Citrix firewall.
Can you then mention what are the source networks and source interfaces for these networks? What is the destination network at the remote end of the L2L VPN connection?
Answer: Source networks = 10.100.x series & 192.168.222.x series / Destination networks are from 192.168.228.x , 192.168.229.x series. Remote admin wants us to NAT our multiple subnets to single subnet i.e. 192.168.50.0 and then traffic from this subnet is allowed at remote end.
Do you want to just do a NAT Pool of the 192.168.50.0/24 network for all your Internet users OR does the remote end also have to be able to connect to some of your sites hosts/servers?
Answer: Yes just want to NAT LAN subnets to 192.168.50.0/24 for all LAN users. 1 way access. I am going to access remote servers.
The new thing for me is how to NAT multiple subnets. I have existing ipsec vpn's where I have added multiple subnets which is traditional set up for me. This requirement is new to me.

How can I improve performance over a Branch Office IPsec vpn tunnel between and SA540 and an SA520
Hello,
I just deployed one Cisco SA540 and three SA520s.
The SA540 is at the Main Site.
The three SA520s are the the spoke sites.
Main Site:
Downstream Speed: 32 Mbps
Upstream Speed: 9.4 Mbps
Spoke Site#1:
Downstream Speed: 3.6 Mbps
Upstream Speed: 7.2 Mbps (yes, the US is faster than the DS at the time the speed test was taken).
The SA tunnels are "Established"
I see packets being tranmsitted and received.
Pinging across the tunnel has an average speed of 32 ms (which is good).
DNS resolves names to ip addresses flawlessly and quickly across the Inter-network.
But it takes from 10 to 15 minutes to log on to the domain from the Spoke Site#1 to the Main Site across the vpn tunnel.
It takes about 15 minutes to print across the vpn tunnel.
The remedy this, we have implemented Terminal Services across the Internet.
Printing takes about 1 minute over the Terminal Service Connection, while it takes about 15 minutes over the VPN.
Logging on to the network takes about 10 minutes over the vpn tunnel.
Using an LOB application takes about 2 minutes per transaction across the vpn tunnel; it takes seconds using Terminal Services.
I have used ASAs before in other implementation without any issues at all.
I am wondering if I replaced the SAs with ASAs, that they may fix my problem.
I wanted to go Small Business Pro, to take advantage of the promotions and because I am a Select Certified Partner, but from my experience, these SA vpn tunnels are unuseable.
I opened a case with Small Business Support on Friday evening, but they couldnt even figure out how to rename an IKE Policy Name (I figured out that you had to delete the IKE Policy; you cannot rename them once they are created).
Maybe the night weekend shift has a skeleton crew, and the best engineers are available at that time or something....i dont know.
I just know that my experience with the Cisco TAC has been great for the last 10 years.
My short experience with the Cisco Small Business Support Center has not been as great at all.
Bottom Line:
I am going to open another case with the Day Shift tomorrow and see if they can find a way to speed things up.
Now this is not just happening between the Main Site and Spoke Site #1 above. It is also happeninng between the Main Site and Spoke #2 (I think Spoke#2 has a Download Speed of about 3Mbps and and Upload Speed of about 0.5 Mbps.
Please help.
I would hate to dismiss SA5xx series without making sure it is not just a simple configuration setting.Hi Anthony,
I agree!. My partner wants to just replace the SA5xxs with ASAs, as we have never had problems with ASA vpn performance.
But I want to know WHY this is happening too.
I will definitely run a sniffer trace to see what is happening.
Here are some other things I have learned from the Cisco Small Business Support Center (except for Item 1 which I learned from you!)
1. Upgrade the SA540 at the Main Site to 2.1.45.
2a. For cable connections, use the standard MTU of 1500 bytes.
2.b For DSL, use the following command to determine the largets MTU that will be sent without packet fragmentation:
ping -f -l packetsize
Perform the items below to see if this increases performance:
I was told by the Cisco Small Business Support Center that setting up a Manual Policy is not recommended; I am not sure why they stated this.
3a. Lower the IKE encryption algorithm from "AES-128" to DES.
3b. Lower the IKE authentication algorithm to MD5
3c. Also do the above for the VPN Policy
Any input is welcome! -
Site-2-Site IPSEC VPN tunnel will not come up.
Hello Experts,
Just wondering if I can get some help on setting up a IPSEC VPN tunnel between a Cisco 2921 and ASA 550x. Below is the config
show run | s crypto
crypto pki token default removal timeout 0
crypto isakmp policy 1
encr aes
authentication pre-share

crypto isakmp key xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx address A.A.A.A

set peer A.A.A.A
set transform-set ESP-AES128-SHA
match address iland_london_s2s_vpn
crypto map ICQ-2-ILAND
The config on the remote end has not been shared with me, so I don't know if I am doing something wrong locally or if the remote end is wrongly configured.
The command Sh crypto isakmp sa displays the following
show crypto isakmp sa

How to setup an IPSec VPN Tunnel Cisco 2320 Vs RVS4000
Hello all.
This forum has always helped me in all my investigations about VPN and now I'm gonna help everyone with this post.
I have succesfully config an IPSec VPN Tunnel by using a Router Scientific Atlanta Cisco 2320 and a RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN.
On the site of Router Scientific Atlanta Cisco 2320 this is some info:
WAN IP: A.A.A.A
Router Local IP: 192.168.5.1
Subnet: 192.168.5.X
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
On the site of RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN this is some info:
WAN IP: B.B.B.B
Router Local IP: 192.168.0.10
Subnet: 192.168.0.X
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Remember that you can not be on the same range of IP, I mean, you can not have 192.168.0.X if the remote network is on 192.168.0.X, you have to change some of the Routers.
I show the configuration on Router Scientific Atlanta Cisco 2320:
I show the configuration on RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN:
If all is correctly configured, you should see on Router Scientific Atlanta Cisco 2320 the Status Connected:
If all is correctly configured, you should see on RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN the Status Up:
As you can see, I'm connected to the remote Router (RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN) by my own web browser accesing by the local IP 192.168.0.10
I have used Authentication MD5, maybe is not the best one but I had no time to test SHA1, I will when I will have time.
I wish that this help to anyone that need to do this.
Best regards!Hey,

How to determine an initiator and responder in L2L - IPSEC VPN
Hi Guys,
One of the client im working on has requested me to change the inititator from site A to site B. Currently, Site A is the initiator and Site B is the responder. The reason is the client could not access any sub-client site from Site A. In case the tunnel goes down, they want Site B to initiate traffic to Site A. I am not sure how to change a VPN tunnel to be a initiator(site b) and responder(site a) accordingly or is this an automated process. I understand that it doesnt matter since however, it still nedds to negotiate SA and policies for tunnel establishment, but is there a manual way for doing it via ACL or ISAKMP policy? Or is there any parameters we can set to control this?
Both firewalls is ASA 5500 Series (5520).
Please help. Appreciate it.
Thank you.Hey,

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa84/configuration/guide/vpn_site2site.html
In addition to VPN you need to look into NAT exemption:

ASA 5505 Site to Site IPSec VPN WILL NOT CONNECT
I've spent 2 days already trying to get 2 ASA 5505's to connect using an IPSec vpn tunnel. I cannot seem to figure out what im doing wrong, im using 192.168.97.0 and 192.168.100.0 as my internal networks that i'm trying to connect over a directly connected link on the outside interfaces with 50.1.1.1 and 50.1.1.2 as the addresses (all /24). I also tried with and currently without NAT enabled. Here are the configs for both ASA's, the vpn config was done by the ASDM, however i have also tried the command line apporach with no success. I have followed various guides to the letter online, starting from an empty config and from factory default. I have also tried the 8.4 IOS.

Site to site VPN re-connection issue
Hi I done site -to -site VPN between two UC 560 and I am able to make call too. Both site I am using DDNS FQDN. Now I am facing these problems,
1. When ever any of the site gone down , it is taking around 45 minute to get reconnect the VPN.
2. With in 2 minute Dialer interface is getting WAN IP address from service provider and it is updating with Dyndns also. But while checking crypto session details from my local UC I can see the peer address is not changing or showing none.
please help me to overcome this issue
I tested by restarting ROUTER-A UC560
Please find the status of remote site:

i'm not familiar with Bordermanager version but be sure you're using 3.9
with sp2 and sp2_it1 applied.
There are not specific documents that i'm aware that explains conf
between ipcop and bm but if ipcop behaves as standard ipsec device, you
can use as a guideline some of the docs that explains how to configure
bm with third party firewalls.

Easy vpn or site-to-site vpn for back up connection?
Hi,
All of my remote sites are connected to HQ via MPLS circuits. I would like to create back link for those remote sites using 871 routers with DSL connection and terminate ipsec vpn tunnels at the outside interface of ASA5540 located at HQ.
The 871 routers will be configured HSRP standby mode. It becomes active and forward traffic when the main router of the remote site losses connection to HQ.
Questions:
1. Has anyone had similar requirements and use easy vpn as a solution? will site-to-site work better for this scenario?
2. How to make ASA5540 handle the routes properly when it sees the same subnets located on both Inside interface and the other end of the tunnel which is terminated at the outside interface?
Static routes are configured on the ASA.
3. I also try to avoid user entering username and password for interactive authentication in easy vpn.
Thanks so much in advance.
PHyes you can site-to-site VPN as a backup.
If the interface going to the backup connection is an interface different than the outside interface, and if the regular connection going down means that the outside interface will go down, then you only need an additional default route, but with a higher metric than your regular route.
But if both connections go out the same interface, or if the outside interface will not go down when the primary Internet connection goes down, then you'll need to take a different approach. ASA 7.2 code introduced a feature called "Standby ISP Support", which allows the firewall to keep an active track on an Internet connection, and if that connection
fails, switch to a different connection.
Try this link:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00806403ec.html#wp1090243 -
This maybe stupid but may somebody help on this.
Site A --- Internet --- Site B
An IPSec VPN is implemented between Site A and Site B. Some "nat 0" commands are used on Site A PIX to avoid addresses being translated when communicating with site B.
But now there is a problem, there are several public servers which have static NAT entries by "static" command. And it looks like these entry will still be valid even if the "nat 0" is presenting. And thus those inside IPs which have a static NAT, will be translated once it reaches the PIX and can not go via the VPN tunnel.
May someone advise me how to overcome this? Thanks.Your question really pertains to the nat order of operations. Nat 0 (nat exemption) is first in the order. It preceeds all other including static nat. The servers you mention will absolutely be included in the nat 0 unless they are specifically denied in the nat 0 acl.

Configure a VPN client and Site to Site VPN tunnel
Hi, I'm setting up a test network between 2 sites. SiteA has a 515E PIX and SiteB has a 501 PIX. Both sites have been setup with a site to site VPN tunnel, see SiteA config below. I also require that remote clients using Cisco VPN client 3.6 be able to connect into SiteA, be authenticated, get DHCP info and connect to hosts inside the network. However, when I add these config lines, see below, to SiteA PIX it stops the vpn tunnel to SiteB. However, the client can conect and do as needed so that part of my config is correct but I cannot see why the site to site vpn tunnel is then no longer.
SiteA config with working VPN tunnel to SiteB:

Cisco ASA 5505 Site to Site VPN tunnel up, but not passing traffic
Thanks to a previous thread, I do have a 5505 up and running, and passing data....
https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3900751
Now I am trying to get a IPSEC VPN tunnel working.
I actually have it up (IKE phase 1 & 2 both passed), but it is not sending/receiving data through the tunnel.
The networks concerned:
name 10.0.0.0 Eventual (HQ Site behind Firewall)
name 1.1.1.0 CFS (Public Network Gateway for Palo Alto Firewall - Firewall IP: 1.1.1.1)
name 2.2.2.0 T1 (Remote site - Outside interface of 5505: 2.2.2.2)
name 10.209.0.0 Local (Remote Network - internal interface of 5505: 10.209.0.3)
On a ping to the HQ network from behind the ASA, I get....
portmap translation creation failed for icmp src inside:10.209.0.9 dst inside:10.0.0.33 (type 8, code 0)
I am suspecting that there is a NAT error and/or a lack of a static route for the rest of the 10.0.0.0 traffic, and that I may have to exempt/route the traffic for the HQ network (10.0.0.0), but I haven't been able to get the correct entries to make it work.
Below is the config.
Can anyone see if there is something sticking out?

Site to site vpn between RV215W and ASA5510
Hello,
We're trying to establish a site to site vpn between a RV215W (firmware version 1.0.0.16) and an ASA5510 (ASA 8.2(3)). The ASA currently has 5 other IPSec VPN tunnels running. It sure does look like I've dotted all my "i's" and crossed all my "t's" with respect to both sides of the tunnel. What I'm seeing from the 5510 is that there is some sort of communication between the two devices but there is no IPSec tunnel established and no traffic is getting beyond either device. It shows the RV215W connected but 0 bytes Tx and 0 bytes Rx.
From the RV215W side of things it shows an IPSec SA not established. The protocol is IKE and the encryption used is 3des. Both sides have the same preshare key and are using the same settings. From each device I can ping the public IP address of the other, but I get no further. I believe I have ACL's set up to allow traffic from both internal networks. (although I may not - I'm hardly a Cisco guru, just fumbling my way through this...)
Any guidance/direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!Hello,
I have found an article that may provide some assistance with your VPN. It has information on more advanced settings on VPNs for the RV215W. I hope that it may be of some use to you.

Hope it helps,

ASA 5505 Site-to-Site VPN dropping at end of lifetime
I have 4 ASA 5505's with Site-to-Site IPSEC VPN tunnels built between them. One of the tunnels stays up just fine but the other 2 drop at the end of the SA lifetime for a period of time equal to 10% of the SA lifetime.
Orignially, I had the the lifetime set to 1 hour and the tunnels would drop for 6 minutes. I changed the lifetime to 8 hours (480 minutes) and they dropped for 48 minutes. I've gone over the configurations and the only differences I can find is that the sites where the tunnel drops have the outside interface forwarded to an VOIP server and all ports but SIP blocked. Can you post the configs?

Site-to-site VPN with remote access
Hello friends,
Company has a few remote offices and goal is connect all in yhe VPN.
I have one IPSec VPN tunnel between remote1 and central office.
Tunnel status is active and everything is ok.
Other remote offices access to central server over remote desktop public IP address.
When I add this NAT command to central router configuration:
ip nat inside source static 192.168.0.10 public_ip_address
there is no ping in VPN tunnel!!!
There is problem that at the same moment work station from VPN tunnel and work station of remote office (without VPN tunnel) cant access to central server.
I have no idea...
Here is the sh run config from central router>

endHi,
Do you mean that you have
A VPN Pool of 192.168.111.0/24
You want it to be able to connect to networks behind a new L2L VPN
If so, then I see no problem with it.
You will naturally require NAT configurations and define the interesting traffic
You will also need to make sure you have "same-security-traffic permit intra-interface" on the firewall with the VPN Client and L2L VPN configuration. This would enable the traffic to enter and leave the same interface which in this case is probably "outside" or something similiar
