How to obtain Disk capacities/usage?

I've been rooting around online all day trying to figure out how to gauge the usage of my disk drive. There doesn't seem to be any API for this?? Oh, BTW, this is an application, not an Applet, so security concerns do not apply!
I'd hate to resort to JNI, because this would make my code non-portable, a serious flaw in my mind.
Does anyone have any experience with this??

You're right. There is no API for that. So you have to do something platform-specific, although you could get away with Runtime.getRuntime().exec() instead of having to use JNI.
(Don't you hate it when the documentation doesn't mention things the product can't do?)

  • Windows SBS Console Server 2011 repair, how to obtain disk 2

    Hi,
My SBS 2011 Standard installation has gone haywire causing huge problems here - basically the SBS console is dead.  After hours of research it seems I need a second disk for SBS to repair it.
My SBS installation as downloaded as part of our action pack subscription - it was one large (8GB) DVD image and there was no options to download a second disk (and there still isn't - I've checked).
Can someone please confirm how I can get hold of one?  It seems ridiculous that a disk purely used for repairing installations isn't readily available.  We're a Microsoft Partner and software reseller and I still can't get my hands on it?!
    Thanks
    Bob

    Hi Bob,
Please refer to this link and check if you can download the Repair Disc for SBS 2011 Standard:

  • How to find disk usage by application

Using the Activity Monitor, I can see that something is making an excessive number of disk IO's and generally slowing the system down.
Is there some way I can see the disk IO on a per-process bases (the same as I can see the CPU usage for each process)?
    Thanks
    Susan

That does not seem to be it - the process that shows up by far the most messages being sent and received is 'kernel task'.
I think I have tracked down the problem that I was seeking this information to solve (does that make sense?). I have been doing quite a bit of software development, some of it involving installing quite large packages. As these were being installed Spotlight was going crazy trying to index them all and causing the system to slow down because of all the directory lookups etc, it was doing.
At least that is my theory and stopping Spotlight's indexing (I have never used Spotlight anyway - it never seems to find what I'm after) I have not seem the performance hit I was seeing before.
On the other hand, I would still like to know how to monitor disk IOs on a per-process basis for the future.
    Thanks
    Susan

  • How can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?

QuestionHow can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?
AnswerThere are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your hard disk drive is used optimally.
    Use Toshiba HDD Protection
Many Toshiba laptops come with a program called Toshiba HDD Protection pre-installed. This program helps to protect your hard disk drive from being damaged due to falls or impacts. By default, it should already be enabled. You might be tempted to lower the detection levels in this application, but doing so could cause your hard disk drive to be damaged. Remember that while the application can reduce the chance of damage, you should still avoid allowing the laptop to fall or suffer rapid impacts.
For more information on this utility, see the following article:
    TOSHIBA HDD Protection
    Optimize the drive
Windows 8 and Windows 7 optimize hard disk drives automatically through a process called defragmentation. Unless you've disabled this, you don't need to do anything. If you have disabled this and want to run the process, you can still do so.
In Windows 8, search for "Defrag" at the Windows Start screen and select "Defragment and optimize your drives."
In Windows 7, search for "Defrag" in the Start Menu's search field and select "Disk defragmenter."
You can use this tool to optimize your hard disk drives, allowing Windows to find needed files faster.
    Remove items from startup
Some applications run automatically when Windows starts. This can add additional functionality, but it also decreases the performance of your computer. Sometimes you might want to disable certain programs from starting automatically.
In Windows 8, search for "Task Manager" at the Start screen. Select the "Startup" tab. Select an application you'd like to disable from starting automatically and then click the "Disable" button in the lower-right.
In Windows 7, type "msconfig" in the Start Menu's search field and press ENTER. Uncheck the boxes next to applications you'd like to disable from starting automatically.
You should be sure of the purpose of an application before disabling it from starting automatically. Some applications might be important. If in doubt, you might consider searching on the Web to discover more information about a program. Remember that if you find that you disabled something vital, you can always re-enable it.

  • What does the "Internal" value on the ASM Disk Group Usage Chart represent?

In OEM Grid Control, on the Automatic Storage Management Home page there is the Disk Group Usage Chart.
What does the "Internal (GB)" value on this pie chart represent? and how it has been calculated?
On one of our servers it is 13% of available ASM disk capacity.. and on another it is 0%.

Internal space is (Total MB - Free MB) from the @ DiskSpaceUsage - Total MB from the DatabaseDiskSpace usage
It is basically the space occupied by the your DB in the ASM disk space. There are few bugs related to this and need to be refined

  • Videos Disk Space Usage

    Good morning,
When I go to 'About this Mac' I see it says I've got 81 GB of videos on my Mid 2013 MacBook Air (OS X Yosemite 10.10.1), but I am sure I don't have that many, also because when I click on the videos folder in Finder it shows I've got about 10 GB of videos. I've deleted all my iTunes movies, even the folders on iTunes Media. How can I free this space?
    Thank you,
    Luis García

  • Host disk space usage

Is there a way to get a report of available disk space for a host?
We do not autoextend our tablespaces, so whenever we need to add more space
, we have to shell into the OS (Unix) and run a "df -k" to see what mount points have space available.
Is it possible to have the OEM Grid send us this info via notification and how?
    Thanks.

Is it possible? if it yes, how ?

yes. but not files as such. may be nodes... fine with create java ... stuff in oracle.
may be the require result would be

  • How to obtain date of creation if image is obtained using getImage()

When Image is obtained using getImage() method , how to
obtain date of creation or another header value if image is
    obtained using getImage method.

Actually, some formats do indeed have creation or modification dates built in. e.g. http://www.w3.org/TR/PNG-Chunks.html#C.tIME. (Of course since most programs save a new copy of the file every time, the two dates are the same.) However, just because formats have this data doesn't mean it's reliable or even present. Your best bet is to pass creation dates in an Applet param tag for applets (assuming you were referring to Applet.getImage()) or to parse out a filename from a classloader URL and use a File object to check (assuming you were instead referring to Toolkit.getImage(URL)). That's the best answer I have without knowing more about what you are trying to accomplish.
