How to open illustrator file (.ai) using Indesign and save it as XML

I know how to open a Illustrator file (.ai) in Indesign.
It would be like :
1 ) Save your Illustrator file as AI. This Native format is most compatible with InDesign.
2 ) Go to -> InDesign, click on your document using your Frame Rectangle tool (the one with the X through it).
3 ) Fill in the desired size (can be adjusted later).
5 ) Go to File menu > Place.
6 ) Find and select the Illustrator file in the window that opens.
7 ) Click the Open button.
Adjust size, & position of your image using the Direct Selection tool (white arrow), and the cropping with the Seclection tool (black arrow.
Now I want to save this file as XML.
After that, I say
1 ) File -> Export
But this file saves as XML only shows he the root element nothing else.
Every time , this shows like
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<Root></Root>
Nothing is there as contents.
Can anyone let me know, is it possible to store .AI file as XML.
My requirement is simple, i want to store the .ai file as XML.
Some how I am using Indesign to do so . Can any body help.

Copy and paste is again seems same as 'Place the file' , it wouldn't help again.
Copy( from Illustrator) and paste( it in Indesign) and later saving\exporting as XML again create the same the XML file with no data . Just a XML structure,

RRegarding using the FXG and SVG file .. saving these formats to XML does not shows the Co-ordinates in XML formats.
I do I would like to have the coordinates (x,y) so that later on , if required I can change the coordinates and display the Image or Text in the file. As this is a requirement for business card.

How can I open the Illustrator CS 6 in the full screen mode.
The program opens every file in the minimized mode and I think it's annoying when I have to clcik the full screen every time.

If the problem is with the application opening in full screen mode (your second sentence) - you can right click on you Ai shortcut and go to Properties. Under Properties you can set the application to run in full screen mode (see screen-shot):
As for the minimized files - not sure if it will help but you can set your preferences to open files as Tabs. This should solve the problem. Go to Edit > Preferences > User Interface > Open documents as tabs

Batch combine files into one illustrator document - how to open target document?

I am making a script which will:
1) Open a folder of Illustrator files
2) Open each file in the folder (these files are called the source files)
3) Select all the contents of the source file
4) Copy the contents of the source file
5) Paste these contents into a target file as a new layer
6) Ensure the new layer has the same name as the old source file
However, I don't know how to tell Illustrator where my target file is. How can I do this?
Also, when I paste, how can I turn off paste rembers layers. (So the layers get pasted into the new layer that has the same name as the old document).

I have adapted the script to my needs and it works perfectly, except it has the same problem as before: It pastes the first source file, but then it endlessly starts pasting the second source file (in a loop) and so I have to force quit.
So my new question is, when looping through files how can you get illustrator to move on the next one?
The original kelsocartography had this line:
thisPlacedItem = newLayer.placedItems.add()
thisPlacedItem.file = imageList[i];
I belive this line is what makes Illustrator move onto the next file, but I am not sure how to adapt it to my code.

Doug's got it right. It sounds like you are trying to open a later version file in an earlier version. This will always be handled as opening the PDF portion of the file. Try Googling AI_openMultiPagePDF for a script to open these or Resave from the newer version to the older.

How to open Photoshop files as layers in an open Illustrator file?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but right now I'm working with both Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 on a mac. I'm creating a graphic. The background is a (cartoonish) mouth and I finished it a couple of days ago. (It's an Illustrator file.) I've been working on the letters to go inside of the mouth, (Once I'm finished it'll look as though they're being crushed.) I scanned and edited small wooden letters in Photoshop, and now I would like to work with them with the background in Illustrator. I understand how to open a Photoshop file in Illustrator, but I don't want to open the document as a separate Illustrator file. Is there a way to open a file from Photoshop as a second layer?
Some of the letters repeat as well. Will I have to create two files for this, or can I open the same file twice?

It needs finishing by hand ... how on earth do I open it in Illustrator?
I downloaded it as an .svg via SVG Crowbar. (That's the only way I know to extract an .svg and am happy to try your better strategies)

It seems to be enough to create empty folders at “/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk” and “/System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle”, to make Illustrator use Jave SE 8 as it should.

Pretty easy ...take the vb reference guide and make the modifications accordingly.
A quick tip would be to press CTRL+W and view the Object Browser after adding a reference to the illustrator Type Library... that will give you a pretty neat look about the illustrator object model in visual studio ... i`m not quite aware if a similar option is available within Mono Initiative's designer.
after that is pretty easy.
(it doesn't really make sense imho importing the namespace as "Application" is used in many other namespaces)
add this to your Form1_Load routine:

I'm having trouble finding my toolbox. When I open illustrator, it's not there. Usually I go to Windows > control or something, but I don't have that.

this can be because of a couple of reasons. The first is that you are holing down the option/alt key when launching Illustrator if so stop doing so.
Or if you made what you think is an alias of Illustrator by holding the option key down when dragging to make the alias but instead you made copy because you actually have to both the command and option while dragging to make an alias.
If you launch from a copy of the Illustrator app from a copy that resides outside the Illustrator Application folder you break a lot of links hence the roblem of them not loading.
Or you simply moved the Illustrator Application outside the Illustrator Application folder you will now have to drag back to the folder.
