How to prevent corruption of Photoshop after optimising Mac hard drive?

I run CS3 on a MacPro, running OS 10.4.11. I defragment files, repair permissions & optimise the hard drive every month or so using TechTool Pro v.5.0.2. Every time, subsequent printing is completely skewed, usually with severe colour shifts. It is independent of the paper used. B&W is not affected. After a lot of sweat, including reinstalling printer drivers, checking my custom profiles, & extended consultation with the printer experts (here in New Zealand)  I have established that CS3 communication with my Epson 3800 is corrupted, by printing using the "Printer manages color" option in the printer driver – no shifts. The only way around that I've been able to find is a complete reinstall of CS3, a pain, to put it mildly. Has anyone else experienced this & been able to prevent it happening?

As a side question, does one really need to defragment drives under OS X?
It depends.

Those of us that work with large files can benefit from periodic defragging. OS X auto-defrags files under 20MB. How many of us have all of our files under 20MB?
Adobe recommends defragging:

I can't comment on TechTool Pro for defragging but I have not heard bad things about 'iDefrag'.

  • How to sync iPhone 4 & 4S after new Mac hard drive installed?

The hard drive on our Mac crashed recently.  After we had it replaced, we can't load new music from iTunes to either my iPhone 4 or to my wife's iPhone 4S.  What do I need to do to get this to work?
Also, we had issues before syncing 2 iPhones to 1 computer - combined contacts, resulting in duplications and my apps showing up on her phone.  Any suggestions to avoid this from happening again?

No computer backup which should include your iTunes library, photos, documents, and any other important data?
When you say you can't load new music on either iPhone, this should mean you are getting a warning message that all iTunes content on the iPhones will be erased first?
Each iOS device synced with iTunes has its own sync preferences with iTunes. If you were syncing contacts with the same Address Book with each iPhone, contacts will be synced between both iPhones and the Address Book.
If the same apps are selected under the Apps tab for the iPhone sync preferences with each iPhone, the same apps will be transferred to each iPhone. Each device has its own sync preferences with iTunes.
If you are sharing the same iCloud account on each iPhone with contacts turned on for over the air syncing with the iCloud account settings on each iPhone, contacts will be synced between the two iPhones.
If you are sharing the same iTunes account or Apple ID on each iPhone, there are settings at Settings > iTunes & App Store under Automatic Downloads to automatically download music, apps, books, and app updates downloaded with another OS device sharing the same Apple ID for iTunes and App Store purchases/downloads.

Are you talking about a Bootcamp partition? You can't boot Windows from an external drive.

  • How to sync an iPod Touch after replacing the hard drive

    Hello,
The hard drive on my second MacBook Pro failed, so we had a new one fitted.
I recovered most of the data using Data Rescue, so I can grab the music files, photos, Pages files, etc.
However I can't get the User data from the damaged drive, nor any of the software programs and serial numbers so I'm effectively starting again with just the software that comes with a 'new' Mac.
The Apple ID on the iPod Touch is very similar to [email protected]
When I launched iTunes for the first time on the MacBook Pro I entered that email address, but it seemed like a new account was started (?).
I connected the iPod Touch to the MacBook Pro.
    The message I got was...
"The iPod "Toby's iPod Touch" is synced with another itUnes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?"
    I clicked Cancel.
What do I need to do to get iTunes to recognise this iPod Touch so it finds all the apps we bought for it?
I have a funny feeling that we are logged in as [email protected] in iTunes, but this isn't the same account as the Apple ID of [email protected] on the iPod Touch. Or have I misunderstood something?
Extra info: I think this computer was working with a User name of Chris Payne, but since it's had a new internal drive we've only set up an account called Toby Payne.
I'd appreciate your help! Thank you!

""The iPod "Toby's iPod Touch" is synced with another itUnes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?""
This is correct. There is no way around this. The ipod touch will sync with one and only one computer/library at a time. If you sync to another, it will indeed erase the current content and replace with the content from the new drive/library.
You can transfer itunes purchases ( including apps) from the ipod. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases

  • Time machine after replacing Mac hard drive

After I replaced my Mac's system drive, Time Machine won't go back prior to the change, even though the data's still in the Backups.backupdb directory.
    Here's my system:
MacPro 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 6GB RAM
320 GB internal drive = "MacHD" = system drive
1 TB internal drive = "HD1" = new internal drive that will replace MacHD
2 TB external drive = "BKUP_TM" = Time Machine drive
    Here's what I did:
    1. Install and format HD1 as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    2. Clone MacHD to HD1 using SuperDuper, with "copy all files" and "make bootable" options enabled
    3. Remove MacHD and reboot computer with HD1 as new system drive
    4. Mount BKUP_TM
    5. Allow Time Machine software run overnight to do whatever it wants (it recognized the BKUP_TM drive immediately and without my input)
    6. Launch Time Machine software after it completes its activity. This is where I noticed that I could only look back in time 1 day to the point of step 5 above.
    7. At the finder level, open the BKUP_TM drive and notice that:
    A. The data is all held in one directory (as expected)
    B. The data still goes back to August 2012 (as expected)
    Here's my overall question:
How do I get Time Machine to access the data correctly?
If I have to, I could reinstall the MacHD drive, erase HD1 and start over, but I'm concerned that even that would not get me back to being able to access the full depth of my Time Machine data in the Backups.backupdb directory.
Thanks, in advance, for the help,
    -SD

Yes. The good news is all my data is safe on:
    - the original location of MacHD (currently not installed in the Mac)
    - the new location of HD1
    - the TM drive of BKUP_TM
Might it be a good idea for me to do this?
    1. Manually delete any directories on BKUP_TM that are after the change from MacHD to HD1
    2. Reinstall MacHD and remove HD1
    3. Boot from MacHD
    4. Mount BKUP_TM so that it will see MacHD and reassociate itself with MacHD
    5. Reinstall HD1 and reformat it
    6. Remove MacHD
    7. Boot from OS DVD
    8. Use Time Machine to restore from backup (on BKUP_TM) or use Migration Assistant to populate HD1.
This idea has flaws (would step 4 work??) and is a lot of steps and time, but it *might* get me back to a usable TM history.
I should note this: NO work has been done on this computer since I first introduced HD1. This means that I will lose NO data if I go back to MacHD as my system drive and use it as the new starting point.
That's just my idea. All ideas are welcome.

  • How do I import multiple DVDs to my Mac hard drive and then burn them to one DVD?

Hello. I need to know how to store multiple DVD movies onto one DVD. I've never done this before, so please bare with me?
I was told to download a free software called "Handbrake", but I cannot find the free download for the version that is compatible with my 10.5.8 Mac OS X.
Is there a way to import and burn the DVDs without downloading software?
    Thank you.

    yes, use Disk Utility.

  • IPhoto - My iPhoto is not responding. When I click on iPhoto I get a never ending spinning beachball.  I almost think it is looking in the wrong place for the pictures.  How do I redirect it back to the Mac hard drive?

My iPhoto is not responding.  Whenever I click on the iPhoto icon I get a twirling beachball.  It is as if the machine is looking in the wrong place for the photos.  How can I see where the machine is looking to find out if this is really the problem.  How can I see the path?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then the problem lies with your current library.
If that's the case  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How Do You "Move" Items/Applications from the Mac Hard Drive?

    Hi,
As the subject line suggests I need to "move" things from my regular Mac Hard Drive to the additional Hard Drive I installed. My normal (forgive my lack of technical talk) hard drive is almost full. I would like to move things like iTunes, iPhoto etc to my new hard drive (1TB) so that I can free up space on my current more regularly used hard drive. Is there an easy way to do this?
    Ali

There's various approaches you can take. Personally I would try to leave applications and the system on the main drive and just move data files to another drive. Some applications really want to be run from the main drive and will become cranky if you put them elsewhere because things aren't where they expect them to be.
Moving files is often just a matter of dragging them to the new place. Note that if this new place is another drive the files get copied and you will have to delete the originals from the original drive once you are done copying.
Applications can have a complex structure with bits and pieces of files all over the place, some may be invisible. While these can be copied, as I said before it is often best to leave them on the main drive.
Just for your information, you posted your software question in the Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Power Mac G5 > Power Mac G5 (tower) hardware questions area. Your computer information says you are running a Mac Pro and Snow Leopard (which won't run on a G5). It doesn't really matter in this case but if you have a platform specific question in future, for fastest response you might want to make sure it gets into the correct forum.

  • How can I move photos from an external mac hard drive to new Macbook pro?

Hi I hope someone can help. My girlfriend spilled soda on her 2008 macbook aluminium running Leopard , rendering it useless. She has since bought a new Macbook pro and would like to get her photos from iphoto onto her new comp. I've removed her harddrive from her old damaged computer and put it into an external USB enclosure, her new Macbook picks up the external hardrive but when I try to move the photo folder (drag) onto her new computer, it says something about the version of iphoto not being compatible. Also when i click on the photo folder on the external harddrive there are no photos on it. Any help would be appreciated, and would score me some brownie points with her .

Does she have any photos in the iPhoto library on her new machine?
What version of iPhoto does she have?
The general answer is to trash the iPhoto library on the new computer (assuming it is empty) and drag the old iPhoto library to the pictures folder of the new machine and launch iPhoto letting it convert the library

  • HT1270 How can i get an upgrade on my mac hard drive to a bigger one and where?

I need help on upgrading my hard drive on my 11 inch macbook air to a bigger size, where do i get that kinda help?

The Air doesnt have a hard drive, rather a SSD,  the largest is a 512GB SSD, which is very expensive.
OWC (other world computing) sells them.
However your notebook is not a storage device, consider offloading static files to an external HD, as it needs to be the case regardless for data backups .

  • How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?

I have a seagte back up plus. I pulled my hard drive out without ejecting it and now finder dosn't find it but I see it in disk utility (although I cant repair permissions) How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?
Thank you so much for any help

In Disk Utility you need to see a volume or partition in addition to the drive.
If all you see is the drive, then when you ejected it you proably corrupted the volume or partition on the drive.
If that is true then your chances of getting anything back are slim at best.
About the only thing I know that might work not is to send the disk out to a service for recovery. This is going to cost like $$$$.
Is the data worth that much?

  • Im new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experincing a hard drive crash out of the blue, I lost everything. I want to make sure this doesn't happen again. I show backups for my iPhone and my daughter's iPod but my mac doesn't exist. How do I fix tho

I'm new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experiencing a hard drive that went out of the blue, I lost everything. I wanted to use the icloud to back my documents up. I went into the iCloud under settings but it only shows my iPhone and daughter's iPod. How do I get my Mac to back up too? Is there something I need to use to have the documents back up?

You cannot back up your Mac to iCloud. Even backing the whole thing up to another online service would be dubious because it would take a very long time. You should buy an external hard disk and back up to that - even better, buy two and use one to make a Time Machine backup and the other to clone your Mac from time to time, thus giving you a backup from which you can boot in an emergency.
If you wanted to back up a suitably sized selection of data to an online service there are a number of third-party methods available, some of which are examined here:
