How to properly upgrade python?

I'm trying to upgrade my Python version from 2.7.2 to 2.7.5.  I have a program I want to run that requires 2.7.5.  I tried to install python using homebrew.  It seems to have worked.  If I try to install it again it says Warning! python 2.7.5 installed already.  However when I try to run my program I get "You need version 2.7.5 or higher, your version of python is 2.7.2".  How do I fix this without messing anything up?  I don't understand why I have two versions of Python installed...

It is my understanding that Apple alone, adds the OS X frameworks to the Python release they ship with OS X. Same story with Ruby. There may be parts of the operating system that depend on Apple's Python implementation, or Apple provided modules, and replacing these with a current Python release may result in unpredictable, or broken behavior.
I use pythonbrew, despite the fact it is no longer actively developed or supported. It containers a complete Python environment inside your home directory, where you can have multiple versions of Python installed and switch between them. If you need to install a non-standard module, then it is installed into the Pythonbrew hierarchy, and not into the system. If you need the system Python, just turn off pythonbrew.
Pythonbrew downloads and compiles the requested Python release. You will be required to have OS X development tools installed (including command-line compilation tools).
This solution works fine for me. A different solution may work better for you.

    HI,
We have Solaris 10 (1/06). I recently purchase the latest DVD's
    Solaris 10 (11/06)
My question is how to I upgrade without doing the full install?
I go to ok prompt and did boot cdrom and it will boot but I never get the option of upgrade, it just start the process of initializing and question for systems info.
Is there an "upgrade command to enter" ?
I'm surfing and trying to figure it out but I thought I'd ask here too.
This is a Sun Ultra 45. Is there two versions like Windows? one full install and another just upgrade?
    thanks for your time

Is there an "upgrade command to enter" ?No. The media tries to find an upgradeable system and will ask if it finds one. What it does not do is tell if you if it found part of one and why it's not upgradeable.
It's somewhat common for odd filesystems in the /etc/vfstab to be enough to keep a system from being upgradeable. You might want to comment out non-OS filesystems temporarily and see if that helps.
There are other things that are checked, but there's no easy way to see what is being checked and how it affects the upgrade status. Much of the checks are run through shell scripts that you can follow if you're persistent though.
This is a Sun Ultra 45. Is there two versions like Windows? one full install and another just upgrade?Nope. Just one, but it will try to upgrade if it finds the right stuff on the disk.
On SPARC I'd also say that you need to make sure you only have one "root" slice visible. That shouldn't be a problem on an x86 system.
Besides the media based "installer/upgrade", you can also look at live upgrade.

  • font color="2200cc" How to properly upgrade to Leopard /font

Here's just a few tips + tricks for users to remember when upgrading their system to Leopard. I'm sure I'm missing some points and this has probably already been discussed but it never hurts to reiterate.
#1.) Perform a fresh install of Leopard and Final Cut Studio 2 on a blank zeroed-out HD. No archive and install or migration assistant. Reinstall all your apps from scratch and perform the necessary software updates.
Also remember to Repair Disk Permissions after every application installation.
Oh well I guess there's only one golden rule and it never hurts to have a backup of your old reliable system for those "help please deadline due this evening" situations which always arise when dealing with new OS.
Have fun guinea pigs I'm in the cage now. Every Final Cut Studio user is curious what bugs may surface with the new OS and posting your issues here in the forum is appreciated. It's great for users who may want to avoid issues until a patch is made but also remember to send your crash reports (if any) to Apple and send Apple a feedback report of any bugs that you may encounter.
So.. If you have any problems with Leopard and FCS2 please let us know here

YMMV, but upgrading was the 'proper' way to upgrade to Leopard for me...
That's what I have always done.
"Proper" is relative around here. "Waste of time" can also be used to describe the scorched earth upgrade/update method. Have I been just lucky? Not if you consider the positive outcomes of simply hitting the UPDATE button for (insert image of counting on my fingers) FCP2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 4.5, 4.5 to 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 to 6.0; OS9 to 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and soon 10.5 as merely lucky. Statistically, those are not blips in a continuum; they indicate 100% success.
Your mileage may vary considerably. My experience shows precisely that Apple's updating procedures function just as advertised. I love these discussions, just to get in there and argue with you guys while some of you rats hope I have I total meltdown on this OS upgrade. We'll be putting Leopard on our editors soon but no one has figured out who's paying for a new OS yet, might not happen till fiscal 2008.

  • How do I upgrade from a 10.6.8 to a later version?

Trying to download apps from the App Store and keep getting the message that the app can't be installed on my system because Mac OS X version 10.7 or later is required.  I have a 10.6.8.  Doesn't an upgrade automatically get updated from Apple when I get the message on my Mac that updates are available?  Do I download from the app store?   There are so many choices - don't know which one to pick.  I'm not a fully matured Apple yet - I'm just a bud and a lot of it looks like Greek to me.

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.

If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest version of Mavericks by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing OS X 10.9 Mavericks from the Mac App Store.

  • How to properly downgrade my os leopard to os panther?

I installed the retail os leopard on my power G5 and it messed up with dvd studio pro 3. How to properly downgrade my os leopard back to panther? thank you.

It's usually not recommended to downgrade. The installers are designed to upgrade OSs. You could corrupt the system files. Your other post about dual boot is the way to go. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2597

  • How can I upgrade from 0S 10.6.6 to 10.7

I need to upgrade to at least OS 10.7.5. I am using a MacBook Pro (2010) 15 in.  Currently I'm using 10.6.6.
What steps do I need to take, and do I have to pay for each upgrade? For example the system require. for 10.7.5 or 10.8 requires me to have at least 10.68. Do I have to pay for each upgrade step? I am running 10.6.6 currently.
    Please help.

I don't see if specific versions have specific OS requirements. Don't forget there are two main OS releases after Tiger and the latest on that site could require those. I know with Java if you want to have the latest then you have to upgrade OS.
Personally I'd make sure I had a solid backup of my whole drive before doing this.

iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club

  • How to properly disconnect a Mini Display Port (MDP) from a Macbook Pro 2012, 1,9?

    Hello:
I was wondering if any Macxperts out there had any idea on how to properly disconnect a MDP Thunderbolt Cable from a 2012 1,9 Gen. Macbook Pro. From my experience with older Macbooks the command was "Command + F7" or something of the sort.
On my Macbook Pro 2012, there is no such button or commend to properly disconnect the plug; as if one were to disconnect or "eject" an external HD. I have read some articles on Google that some people just disconnect the plug and that action is sufice to disconnect an external video projection (Ex: Flat Screen Samsung).
Can a Macxpert or Genius comment on this piece of information? I would really apprecite some light shed on this situation. I just don't see unpluggin a cable connected to a video source enough to properly shut off a connection with out damaging the Macbook Pro's video card.
