How to reinstall Mac OS X with dead hard drive and no DVD drive?

Hey,
I need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.6 on my Mac Mini as my hard drive doesn't appear to be booting. However, I cannot reinstall it through the OS install DVD as the DVD drive is not working either. I don't have any other Macs on hand to help create a boot disk or something so does anyone else have any solutions?
Thanks,

Your going to need a external blank (preferably Firewire 800) drive if your not capable of replacing your Mini's internal drive.

Your going to need a external DVD drive, or use a friends Mac with one and follow these instructions to place 10.6 on a bootable USB thumb drive to install on the external or new internal drive.

To boot from the external drive, hold the option key down on a wired keyboard and select it to boot from, set it as the Startup disk in System Preferences.

Because Apple did not put one in there.

We can't really answer that, but it would not surprise me. More and more of the computers being produced by Apple lack an internal optical drive. If you really need one, get an external such as LowLuster suggests.
    Best of luck.

         Q. What sizes of USB Flash sticks are supported?
         A. USB Flash sticks are supported in 64, 128, and 256 MB sizes. No other sizes are supported.
         Q. Can I use any USB memory stick for this application?
         A. No. Only Cisco USB memory sticks are supported.
    Q. Can I boot an image directly from the USB Flash module?
    A. Yes. USB drivers have been added to rommon, starting with version 12.4(13r)
         Q. Can I format the USB Flash module on the router?
    A. Yes. You can format the module on either a router or a PC. You must  specify "FAT16 file system" as the file system for the PC format process  to use.
If your setup satisfies above conditions you can get the router to boot up with the IOS on the USB flash
If you are in ROMMON mode, use 'dev' to find out the name of the USB Flash (should be usbflash0).
    set BOOT=usbflash0:
If you are in the router,
    boot system flash usbflash0:

  • Mac SE FDHD with dead HDD - boot and run from floppy drive alone? HDD type?

    Hello!
I picked up a Mac SE FDHD a few months back - a model with a Superdrive and hard drive, as well as 4 MB of RAM. It came with a keyboard and mouse, but no floppies of any kind. Upon testing, I discovered that the hard drive did not work - the "flashing question mark folder" appears at startup, and the disk setup utility on the system 6 install disks I created using a more modern mac can't detect it. I don't hear HDD seek sounds either. Everything else works fine, as far as I can tell. The reason I want to use this old Mac is simply to boot it up and run a few favorite old programs (such as MacPaint and many old games), so I don't want to put too much money into it.
I discovered my parents still owned a old, 170 MB "LaCie Tsunami" SCSI external drive, used with our long-failed Mac II, and decided to use as the SE's boot drive, as a cheap workaround to avoid buying a "new" drive. However, after a rather odd turn of events (described below for information purposes), it turns out that the 50-pin SCSI drive itself functions, but in the process, I think I killed the enclosure. Unless this drive can replace the internal drive of the SE, (or get lucky and find a compatible drive somewhere), I'll need to run the SE from its single floppy drive.
I figure that since the original Mac had 128k of memory, a single 800k floppy, and no hard drive, and yet can still run OS 7, the SE should be able to run system 6 from floppies somehow. The question is how? Is there a tutorial online somewhere on how to set this up?
Furthermore, as far as the hard drive is concerned, is the SE's internal drive a standard 50 pin SCSI HDD, and thus likely compatible with the one from the LaCie?
Thanks for any suggestions, and for helping this "Old time Mac Newbie" out!
    -Dan
PS: What happened to the LaCie drive - for information purposes:
WHen I attached to the LaCie drive to the SE and booted the OS 6 install disks, t worked - OS 6 installed to it just fine. However, it turns out that a "dormant" copy of Norton utilities reactivated when I booted to the SCSI drive, and encrypted the disk's partition table. (Why it was not encrypted BEFORE installing and booting OS 6, I don't know) Having not used the drive for 17 years , and thus not knowing the password, I had to reformat it. I have a Sawtooth G4 with an Apple SCSI card - but no cable that would go from the PCI card's SCSI port to the external enclosure. THus, I removed the drive from the enclosure, mounted it in the G4 internally, and formatted it as Mac OS Standard (with OS 9 drivers) using Mac OS 10.3. Upon re-installing the drive in its SCSI enclosure, I found that it no longer works - Norton was erased, but the SE gives me a "Sad Mac" icon upon boot. Furthermore, after borrowing the correct SCSI cable, I found the enclosure now kernel panics my G4 when attached. The drive itself, when mounted internally in the G4, still functions perfectly. Thus, it seems that either the enclosure is dead, or something about OS X's reformat is renders the HDD incompatible with the enclosure...

"I removed the drive from the enclosure, mounted it in the G4 internally, and formatted it as Mac OS Standard (with OS 9 drivers) using Mac OS 10.3."
I just re-checked Disk Utility's format options under Panther and only see "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" or "Mac OS Extended." I don't see an option for formatting Mac OS Standard. Are you certain that you formatted the drive as a Mac OS Standard (HFS) volume? If it's a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volume, that would explain why it won't work when connected to the SE. When using external SCSI enclosures having a hard drive or optical drive, I always opted to connect an "active" SCSI terminator to the unused SCSI port on the enclosure. It seemed to provide stability, because I never had a problem with any of them. Does the LaCie enclosure have a built-in termination switch or do you plug in a terminator to the opposite SCSI port on the back? As for installing/using the 170 MB hard drive in the SE, it must have a jumper installed on its TE pins, if it's the last device connected to the SE's SCSI ribbon cable. Additionally, the HDD must have a unique SCSI address, The factory default is usually 0, which doesn't necessarily require a jumper. If another address is desired, a jumper or two installed across specific pins will accomplish that. If the LaCie enclosure had a switchable SCSI address button on the back (you change it by pressing in with a ball point pen), there were small wires from it that were connected to the drive's address pins in a specific way. Did you disconnect/re-connect these when you re-installed the drive in the enclosure? Also, if the enclosure has a termination switch, did you re-connect its wires to the drive's TE pins?

  • Burning iDVD to DVD disc with i Book G4 combo drive and external DVD drive

7/6/2006. After much recent experimentation with iLife, iMovie and iDVD, I found how to use themes and set up movies in my iBook G4 purchased two years ago near Chicago (updated to OS 10.3.9). To burn an iDVD file to a DVD disc on a "combo drive" (that is, it has no DVD writer drive) iBook or other comparable Mac, go to File on the top horizontal tool bar and down there to "burn to DiscImage." Depending on the size of the file, it will take about four hours for every hour of movie file to encode it. I just set it up that night, went to bed and woke up the next morning with it finished. Once encoded, it doesn't need to be encoded again and can be used in the future. But Toast 7 Titanium will not burn it to an external DVD writer as "video." but it will burn the video file as "data." And pretty fast. The 'data' file still remains a video file and will do everything the video file does, only now from an external round DVD disc, too. I discovered this by accident, although Matt (tech support) reminded me about DiscImage. Later, David (also in tech support) told me to download newer versions of iDVD and iMovie, but that did not work, nor had he ever tried it. Remember for a combo drive and using iDVD, and also iMovie, under File burn to DiscImage and save on an external disc as "data." My external DVD write is by LaCie. Best wishes. Like altero said, you're not using Toast properly... Follow these directions:
Suggest you create a disc image from iDVD and then burn the DVD. In iDVD: File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • KT4AV will not boot with SATA card installed and no SATA drive

I put a Promise brand SATA II card in a KT4AV motherboard. There is an IDE drive and a DVD drive hooked up to the IDE1 port on the motherboard. That IDE drive has Windows XP Pro SP2 loaded on it.
If I have a SATA drive plugged into the card, the machine works fine. If I remove the STAT drive and leave the card in, I cannot boot to Windows. If I remove the card, it works fine. The only time there is a problem is when the SATA card is plugged in and there is no drive on the SATA card.
As one possible solution, I tried to boot to a Windows CD to reload Windows. It will not even allow me to reload from the CD, it says there is a file missing from the CD. If the SATA drive is hooked up, it will work fine on the CD. Also, I tried multiple CDs and they all give the same message. Because it makes a difference whether the SATA drive is connected or not, I do not believe the CD is the problem.
I have tried looking on Promise's web site for a FAQ or an updated BIOS or for other information about this problem and I found nothing. I have e-mailed them and they did not reply yet.
There is no reason to think this is the fault of the motherboard, but I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas about this problem. Because of the symptoms, I believe it also cannot be the CPU, memory, PSU, video card, etc. Sorry if that makes this post off topic.

Have you tried to disable card in Device Manager when you don't use it? What is the model number of the card you are using?
It is a SATA 300 TX2, which means that it has two SATA ports and one IDE port. I have never used the IDE port, only one SATA.
I have never tried to disable it, but I could try, just to see what it did. It sure would be a lot more work to disable and enable it so that isn't a good long term solution. Among other things, it would mean that I would have to boot up in order to remove the SATA drive. Since it won't boot with the drive removed, it will require more planning.
Will post the results once I have tried. Still no reply from Promise :-(

How can I format an HD with System 10.4 and install Leopard Snow?

You need to partion the hard drive using Disk Utility. On one partition install 10.4. On the other 10.6. As a note I trust you are doing this on a MBP and not a PPC Mac because 10.6 won't install.

I started getting this after installing GoPro Studio 2.
Uninstalling it and even deleting the plugins manually didn't work, and neither did reinstalling AE.

A PowerPC Mac, if that's what it is, won't be able to see an Intel Mac's formatted data.  Also ExFat formatting is not supported by 10.6.3 or earlier.  I would try viewing the backup on another Intel Mac with at least 10.6.4.  If it isn't there, then the backup never really took place.  I much profer a hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

My laptop died so I've installed itunes onto another PC and my music is all on an external hardive which is connected to the new PC. How can I sync my ipod with the new itunes and get all the music onto itunes?

You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year.  It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you.  Items that it does not find in the catalog it'll upload and store these in the cloud for you and you can download them on your devices.  See http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/

  • How do I recover data from my dead hard drive?

How do I recover data from my dead hard drive?

Is it dead or corrupt? There are recovery programs out there, however if your HD is head, paying pros to do data recovery is VERY costly.       Some have removed the platters and installed them in likewise drives that dont have head crashes, but torque tolerances are tight, and doing it right is a bit advanced and tricky for most. Ive done HD disk swaps 4 times and had success 3 of the 4 times. It requires cannibalizing another working HD.   In the future remember the golden rule, 2 copies is 1, and one is NONE.
Its likely you could find a local computer repair station that can do it for you cheaply.  HD dont really "die", they have fried SATA bus, or crashed HEADS........the platters DO demagnatize over long time due to heat and degauss of the data (poor storage, etc).........but in specific, a HARD DRIVE DOESNT DIE ,.........only the flying head mechanisms that read and write the data, and SATA / bus that feeds the data DIES,.......but the data (unless corrupt or magnetically corrupted) is THERE
